Very pleasant lounge, open fire lovely and warm. Was meeting a friend for coffee and a scone, asked for a cheese scone, they don't do cheese ones only plain or sultana. Scone arrived, mediocre jam and butter, lovely dollop of clotted cream. Scone was so crisp it disintegrated making it very difficult and messy to eat, they obviously have no idea what a scone is - soft spongy & light (the local baker make very good ones if they want to find out). My friend was paying, so didn't feel it polite to her, to complain. It was quite expensive and if I order a scone, I don't want a crumby rock bun. Small detail, but an indication of overall standards

Nice table by the window, calamari, sea bass, chicken, and apple crumble were all really nicely cooked and presented. Service was timely. Young staff v.pleasant, helpful and competent. Overall good experience and value for money. Shame you can’t see the river and it would be nice if all of the tables had cloths on them. Will revisit.

Nice food and venue but wont go back due to exuberant prices for what you get. Lovely hotel in a beautiful location with reasonably good food but nothing to shout home about. Staff were slow in taking orders and waiting tables but very polite. The only disappointing thing was the prices from drinks to the meal.

Very average. No like it used to be before it was sold. Menu was uninspiring. One vegetarian option - a burger. Wine list was not good. Much better places to go in the area. A shame as it used to be brilliant. Won’t be back

We had a great lunch at the Tontine Hotel, great service, fantastic food and really good portions. We had the lunch time menu , two courses £15 .The beef cannons with creamy mash and winter veg was great. The starter I had was Thai fish cakes, very tasty. We were only here for lunch, not staying over.

We had dinner which was excellent. Great variety of food and imaginative. The chef is obviously worth his weight in gold as quality was completely unexpected. Best meal we had in Peebles wish we had known sooner, and we wouldn't have wasted our money in restaurants nearby which a number of people had mentioned was great but the Tontin was far superior.

Welcome non existent on arrival despite someone sitting on reception. We were confused to be refused a table in a virtually empty restaurant as it was ‘too busy.’When we saw another couple walk in and offered a table immediately,I asked a different member of staff if there were tables available. She said we were welcome to sit wherever we liked and was surprised to hear that we hadn’t been offered a table by previous staff member. However we preferred to take our money elsewhere. There are lots of great places in Peebles where we would prefer to spend our money.

My partner and I went out for a meal for the first time in 2.5 years and we opted for the Tontine - and were very glad we did! The main room, which overlooks Peebles and the surrounding rolling hills, had a lovely warm atmosphere and we were made to feel very welcome by all the staff. Tables were well spaced out - it felt very safe in terms of covid and also meant that we had privacy. The drinks and food were delicious - between us we had red wine, a cask ale, a vegan burger and a tarte tatin and chips. The vegan burger (which my partner and I shared) was the best I have ever had and my partner was very happy with the tarte tatin and chips too. It is harder to put into words, but I think The Tontine just has something special about it. There is also the sense that those running it genuinely care. We will be back :)

I spent a few days in Peebles with the family and we came here for a couple of afternoon drinks on 2 occasions and both times we were met with extremely poor service. Staff with short attitude (one in particular) from the off set. We were moved to a bigger table as we didn’t fit one, the staff acted as if this was a huge undertaking and we were made to feel quite unwelcome as they moved us, which was odd as the bar wasn’t busy. This was followed by extremely slow service both times we popped in and no one coming back to the table to take a further orders. A couple of drinks turned into one each time due to this service. Extremely poor all round, both times we visited with prompted us to move to Wetherspoons!

Recently returned from a weeks stay at the Tontine Hotel in Peebles. I ate in their newly refurbished restaurant The Adam Room each evening and really enjoyed all my meals. Like everywhere else they are just coming out of lockdown and finding their way with the menu, which for a weeks stay could have been limiting. However any request l made for a small change from what was available was always done with no fuss whatsoever, presented beautifully and served with a lovely smile. The quality of produce used is excellent and sourced locally when possible. All meals were delicious, all staff well trained, knowledgeable, very helpful and courteous. The dining room is very clean with staff ensuring when a table is vacated it is immediately sanitised and wiped. The room is large and airy making it easy to have the policy of social distancing adhered to. The owners are on hand to ensure all runs smoothly leading by example and are a delight to deal with. I have no hesitation in recommending The Adam Room Restaurant in the Tontine Hotel, Peebles.

Got caught, suddenly starving after a day out to St Mary's Loch. Hit Peebles and went into the Tontine. It's one of those slightly faded places that despite being ripe for modernisation, the temptation has been resisted...and the Tontine is all the better for it. We ate in an enormous dining room with high ceilings and chandeliers. It felt like a set for a costume drama. we were shown a table by a tall window in a bay at the end of the room with a view. I thought 'this'll be freezing' ( It was cold outside) but it so wasn't . The menu was simple but but everything sounded good. I went for a Beef bourguignon and the wife went for a chicken burger. Something like a Beef Bourguignon is something I'd normally shy away from...like lasagne, it so often disappoints and falls short of what it should be. After a few minutes a lady who had the manner of 'mine host' came out to check I definitely wanted the beef because it takes a bit longer than anything else on the menu. Well...BINGO I thought..that sounds promising...and well worth the wait it was too. Absolutely delicious. The missus's near silence once the food arrived was indicative of the quality of the chicken burger. Looked very good to me but I didn't ask for a bite...in case I had to share my Beef!!! :-) Had a wee half of a rather good local IPA with it. Altogether a pleasant visit. We will be back.

This was my first visit to the Tontine Hotel for about 30 years and was interested to see any changes. I cannot comment on the bedrooms as I was only there for lunch. By the looks of it there is very little change to the main lounge and certainly no change to the restaurant/function room which looks extremely dated and tired. In fact there is so little change to this main room that everything was so familiar to me when I had my wedding reception there in 1983! Anyhow back to the lunch. My Mum had the Cullen Skink soup which she said was pretty average and looked pretty thin and at about £8 was pretty steep in price. My wife and I had the Thai green curry and again was pretty average and came in at about £13, which I would happy to pay in a nice authentic Thai restaurant with some nice ambiance, but this was way off the mark. Service was acceptable but left very underwhelmed and wouldn’t recommend for lunch

After a tiring week I felt like a coffee and reading the papers on one of the large cosy sofas in the lounge of this hotel. Having waited quite a while for someone to take my order, I did get a coffee but then waited another 45 mins before the waiter told me my choice of sandwich was not available. The young waiter was helpful and concerned, but the older more senior staff member shrugged his shoulders and said that sometimes they just run out of ingredients. No apology. As a previous reviewer says, I did not feel welcome here. I will not return, cosy sofas or not.

We wanted a treat and had a voucher so went for dinner. Everything was fantastic. Their Covid measures were very thorough - so had pre-dinner drinks at the table. The Strawberry daiquiry was incredible. We both had the pork belly bites starter - stunning. Then hubby had the fish pie and I had the chicken pakora flatbread - again both amazing. And then the cheesecake was the best we've ever had (I think it was Bueno flavour or something like that). The wine was great - thanks to the lovely waiter Calum who recommended that one. And the coffee was lovely too. Had to walk home (5.5 miles) to try to burn off all the calories, but it was worth it.

There used to be a few really good places to dine in Peebles, sadly at a couple of them standards have deteriorated rapidly. Thankfully The Tontine still retains a high standard of hospitality. A very warm welcome as we were shown to our booked able for 4 in the Bistro. The Bistro is very comfortable, pleasant atmosphere and the staff are excellent, attentive and smartly dressed,. We had Emily Sam and a charming young man serving us(I did not catch his name). The menu has choices to suit every palate. The Vegan Burger was fantastic, delicious, served with a tasty side salad and fries . The best veggie/vegan burger I have ever had. The fish and chips, ordered by others was huge and tasty. The puddings could not be passed over, the creme brulee was perfect and the ice creams comments were 'absolutely delicious'.A lovely relaxed atmosphere and at £75 for 4 for lunch, including drinks, very reasonable. Spent a weekend here with our teenage daughter, our dog and my parents. We were given rooms towards the back of the hotel in the annexe. Both rooms were superb, my Mother was so impressed with the pillows she went online and bought some and she is very fussy about her pillows! Our room was very spacious and we were even given a dog bowl and blanket for our little pooch which was a lovely touch. The bathroom was a good size, with the longest bath I have been in away from home and we were given huge fluffy towels which you don't often get.As we didn't want to leave the pooch in the room alone she dined with us so we weren't allowed in the reception room or the large dining room at the rear but we were more than happy to eat in the Brasserie for our breakfast and evening meal, in fact we were given the same table for the whole weekend. The bar is lovely and cosy and is a lovely area to relax after dinner. The food is fantastic, no complaints from us at all. The breakfast is ordered from a menu but in the main dining room they have out the usual cold starters of fruit, cereal, pastries etc for you to help yourself. We brought bikes with us and were given a key for the bike storage shed at the rear of the hotel which was a nice touch. The hotel is situated on the main street amongst the shops and backs out onto the riverbank which is lovely to walk along.Every single member of staff we encountered were extremely polite, helpful and friendly. We had several weekend breaks last year but this was by far the standout weekend for us, we will definitely be back to the Tontine.

I have never had a fish pie so loaded with fish , good large chunks of haddock, salmon, king prawns and mussels all topped with a smooth mash- left no room for dessert.Only quibble was wine could have been more chilled. Breakfast the next day was a similar shambles, took 20 minutes to get a coffee and ages to order food, which did come relatively quickly. That evening, as one of our party really wanted to use the restaurant we gave it another chance. Service was still slow but the food was good when it came, but on a different table things were not so good. We received a Wowcher for Christmas, for a two night stay with cream tea upon arrival at the lovely Tontine hotel. It did not disappoint. Peebles itself was a wonderful place to visit, with various pubs, restaurants and shops to enjoy, friendly locals, and a beautiful walk along the River Tweed to experience, and the Tontine was in a perfect location to enjoy it all. With friendly staff who greeted us upon arrival and continuously throughout the day, a delicious breakfast (with your choice as to how big or small you wish it to be) included with our booking, clean, spacious rooms, and a cosy common area with a roaring fire to enjoy a spot of cream tea. All of this added to what was an amazing Scottish adventure. Thank you Tontine.

My husband and I spent a Saturday night at the Tontine in January this year , The room was probably the nicest I’ve ever stayed in , full en-suite bathroom with roll top bath , very luxurious furniture and bed . We also had a delicious meal in the restaurant, my husband is Vegan and he was fully catered for . Considering it’s posit very close to a busy road there was minimal road noise . Just fabulous .

Spontaneous lunch with family member on a Wednesday afternoon, the place was packed, always a good sign. Informed if we come back in about ten minutes we would have a table, a good indication that the staff are on the ball and care about providing a service beyond the star rating...!

If you want to stay in a hotel with old style charm this is the place for you. It’s beautiful dining room with high arch windows and crystal chandeliers take you to a time gone by, as do the warm and friendly public areas with sumptuous leather chairs and comfortable couches. The staff are fabulous and understand customer service attending efficiently and cheerfully to your every need, nothing is too much trouble. The owners go out of their way to make you feel as if you are their most important guests leaving you feeling special. All this and a first class restaurant and well stocked bar will suit all tastes. The menu ranges from bar food favourites to high end restaurant food using the best of local ingredients. We were on a DB&B; deal and each morning has a sumptuous full Scottish breakfast, or scrambled eggs and smoked salmon or poached haddock. There is also a full continental buffet and vegetarian option. Not to mention porridge. In the evening we partook of the best steaks, pheasant and my favourite Cullen Skink. Many places today skimp on staff not here there are staff a plenty to ensure your experience is the best. The surrounding area is beautiful with lovely River walks and castles near by. In the town it’s self there are lots of artisan shops among the delightful old buildings of the High Street We will be back as soon as we can

I can honestly say that this hotel gives great old fashioned service with a modern twist. From the second we got through the door we were greeted by a lovely man who helped check us in and showed us to our room. We had upgraded to a superior room and it was lovely and cosy and immaculate.

My husband and I booked an overnight stay to celebrate, his birthday / retirement. What a good choice, not far from our home in Edinburgh, but we thoroughly enjoyed our short stay. We had our evening meal in the restaurant, which was lovely, and reasonably priced. The following morning breakfast, which was amazing, we did not eat again until our evening meal, around 7 pm!!

We love staying at the Tontine Hotel, Kate, Gordon and the staff always give us a warm welcome and ensure our stay is an enjoyable one. We have been visiting the hotel annually with a group of 15 friends for nearly 20 years and they couldn’t do more for us. Rooms are well appointed and beds are sooooo comfortable, breakfast is delicious and we always have evening meal here too as the food is exceptional, especially the scallops. We would highly recommend

Thank you so much to all at The Tontine for our annual Christmas Lunch today. The Christmas Lunch menu is really impressive and, as in the last few years, the staff helped the Peebles MS Society organise a most enjoyable lunch.

Been going here for years, on last visit we had pate starter made at Gosford farm. No chefs at Tontine ? Both had fish. Boiled potatoes were microwaved very soggy. Not good enough. Tea was cheap catering tea. Terrible. Coffee was same.

I moved to Peebles with my family a week ago, and I’ve already visited the Tontine twice for lunch! First time with my daughter on the comfy couches, then again today with my husband, daughter & parents in the dining room. We loved the cheery service, AMAZING chips & altogether lovely food....they were VERY busy but still smiling....I think it’s good value for money on the whole in the Tontine. Looking forward to trying the afternoon tea next!

Called in with friends for Sunday Lunch. Greeted and seated by an older gentleman who cracked a joke or two. Very friendly and efficient staff. Food was excellent. Nice to get decent roast beef and not horrible old topside. This was fresh cooked and tasted fantastic with a good selection of vegetables.Well done Chefs and staff

Very difficult finding a dog friendly cafe in Peebles. Such a shame. The various cafes are missing trick, and custom (see how successful Kirkby Lonsdale addresses this)! However The Tontine Hotel welcomed us. A courteous young man showed us to the dog friendly bar, fetched us two good flat whites and croissants. My wife and I were so relieved and valued the friendly and efficient service. So, if you have a dog and, like us, wanted to do some walks around Peebles fuelled by local coffee and cakes...The Tontine Hotel will welcome you....and your dog. Recommended

A beautiful hotel with wonderful kitsch chic decor and mahoosive beds, the breakfast we had was amazing and the bar served us until we were merry. Great service and staff and they love dogs.

We have eaten in the Bistro at the Tontine on a number of occasions - always excellent. Great menu with lots of choice. Locally sourced food and always fresh and tasty. Nive relaxed atmosphere. Drinks list comprehensive and sensibly priced. Overall good value-for-money for the high quality food. Service really fantastic - special mention to Alex our waiter who was professional, friendly, efficient and knowledgeable about the menu. We had a really enjoyable meal,,, Highly recommended - you wont be disappointed!

Stopped for lunch mainly because we could take our dog in with us. Delighted to see that the menu informs you of “dairy free” and “dairy free available” for the items on the menu. One of our group cannot have milk so ordered the steak pie which was marked “dairy free”. He was so disappointed when the pie arrived without the pastry - surely this should have been marked “dairy free available”! Apart from that the food and service was ok.

Ate here recently, as there menu looked very good for the money, and offered a good gluten free selection. I had the G/F haddock and chips and peas, which was very good, and my partner had the Haggis neepsand Tatties in a whisky sauce off the normal menu..both were very good meals, and the service was excellent. restaurant, clean and friendly, would definitely eat there again

From stepping through the door you are made to feel very welcome at this hotel. The room was simple but spacious and clean, bathroom had a huge shower. We ate in the wonderful dining room with family. The meal was fabulous with a varied menu offering enough choice, tasty and well presented dishes. Only small criticism was the wait for pre-dinner drinks, and one of the waiters not liking it when we pointed out the drinks he delivered were not what we ordered. All other staff were polite and attentive, without being intrusive. Very busy place for a Monday night!

Sadly now seem to be closed. Unfortunately the Main Street of Jedburgh offers nothing in the way of dog friendly cafes... the only town in our trip across central Scotland to have that issue.

We love The Plough, and were very happy to try the food from the new Chef. The choice of burgers is fantastic, and I highly recommend the Chilli one, so tasty. If you like good food, cold beer and a warm atmosphere, get yourself there!

Sunday roast was very good - great selection of veg on plate and an extra small jug of gravy with lovely tasting lamb. Really enjoyed our lunch and would definitely recommend and visit here again.

We were here for afternoon tea, although the food was presented very well and tasted great, there were far too many cakes and not enough savoury foods, we asked for a box to take at least 9 cakes home, from the time we asked we had waited over 30 minutes, which spoiled the whole experience, when the boxes arrived they looked like plastic small Chinese takeaway boxes which the cakes didn't fit into and were all squashed, I asked for a bigger box but that was all they had! I did notice other people sitting across from us who waited ages to even be acknowledged, eventually the lady got up and went to reception to see why nobody had came to see them, not the best of service from such a beautiful hotel, although the food was lovely.
