Went for an evening meal on 23rd February to celebrate my mum's birthday. Food was delicious. Look at for the offer on the steak night. I had seabass which was very tasty. We didn't have dessert on this occasion (although have done so on previous visits) as we had bought a birthday cake along. Well sort a visit. The pub is on the A30 in Milborne Port. Plenty of parking or there is parking nearby. Staff were very helpful and attentive.

I came to Milborne Port for a friends wedding in October and decided to rent an Airbnb for my parents and my daughter so we could spend a few days relaxing before and after the wedding. We booked Sunday dinner at the Tippling Philosopher in advance as noted from reviews it can get busy. We visited the pub when we arrived on the Friday evening and felt very welcome. Nice atmosphere with lots of locals. Good selection of beer and wine. We came back for a coffee Saturday morning and really liked the community feel during the day too. On Sunday we had the roast dinner which was delicious. Fresh veg and lots of it! Beautifully cooked meat. We then came back on the Sunday evening for the pub quiz. Again, we were made to feel very welcome despite everyone else being local. Children are allowed in the pub until 9pm, but the landlady said if my daughter was well behaved she could stay until the end of the quiz (she’s 10). Overall, the pub made our trip to Milborne Port very enjoyable. It seems to be a proper community hub and the owners obviously put a lot of effort into it. Thanks for having us :)

This is by no means my first review of this lovely pub. But the consistency we find with their meals - and the Sunday roast in particular - is worth telling over and over. Today three of us all went for the roast beef - melt in the mouth, and cut just as one wants it, rare for those of us who like it that way, through to well done if that's your preference. And served with roast potatoes, Yorkshire pud, four seasonal vegetables (today it was red cabbage, broccoli, carrots and green beans) and lots of thick beef gravy. We chose not to have starters or desserts this time, opting for the large main meal alone and so ignoring the slightly smaller option. Today, had we not gone for the beef, we could have had the pork, which we have had on occasion, as it always comes with stuffing and perfect crackling. And it is always just as good - great consistency that we've never found anywhere else, and price-wise it's all amazing good value too. In short, it's hard to beat, on quantity, quality and price and little wonder therefore that it's always wise to book in advance. That said, Dave and Di run a place where nothing's too much trouble and they'll always fit you in if they can, but my advice is, when it comes to food this good, don't leave it to chance, pick up the phone and book. We already have, and we'll be back at our usual table next Sunday.

We were on an easter break and popped into this pub for dinner and a few drinks on a Saturday evening, as we were staying a short walk from here. For a remote pub and the only pub in this village, it was absolutely shocking. Staff/owners were miserable as sin and were not very welcoming at all. The atmosphere was terrible and actually made you feel you were aliens visiting from another planet or something. Food was questionable to the point where unfortunately I was poorly that evening and the following day. It was such a shame that this pub was so bad, as usually in remote villages with nothing else around, they are usually the best ones to visit. Surfice to say we had a couple of drinks and left. I wouldn't recommend this place at all.

Came here with my friends for a pub quiz. The owners were welcoming and accommodating, the quiz was engaging and challenging, there was food brought out to all participants; this was a very pleasant surprise and meant my friend didn't need to find somewhere to eat before we went home. Fantastic visit, even if we didn't win! Always nice to support a local pub, especially one like this, can't think of a better example for why we need to support local business. We popped in on the off chance after taking our aged mother out for a ride. What a gem! A lovely, clean pub. Dog friendly (Sid was even given dog biscuits on a plate and given a bowl of water). We had a lovely meal. Fish and chips and scampi and chips both with mushy peas and a jacket potato for mum. The meals were freshly cooked and very hot. They have a lovely garden if the weather is good enough to sit outside. Very friendly staff. Their Covid precautions were excellent, with hand sanitizers everywhere.

Got here at opening time on a Saturday morning it was a place to meet up and decide where to go next with family and friends, as they were buying a house locally and this would be the local they and we would use when visiting, as we walked in to a very stoned faced bar lady, who looked at us as though we we’re aliens! We ordered soft drinks and coffee as they had no non acholic beer, prices were ok, and the coffee which was finstant was brought over to us with a small jug of milk and sugar, it was ok. We didn’t stay, and probably will not return as the selling of non acholic beer is I think quite unacceptable nowadays especially when they sell non acholic gin! I always thought village pubs were meant to be happy and welcoming. It was clean tidy and the decor was pleasant not like the staff.

We dined here one night while staying in nearby Purse Caundle. From the outside, the Tippling Philosopher is an unremarkable pub, and one might be tempted to go on to a more attractive looking pub in Sherborne. This would be a mistake.Inside, the pub is lovely and welcoming. There are plenty of tables sitting groups of 2-8 diners (or drinkers) and the friendly bar staff are ready to take drinks and food orders against a large variety of menu options and daily specials. There was no problem with adjusting some of the menu items and sides to suit our requests, and the food came promptly, hot, and tasty. Actually, we only had one complaint - it was too much! The meals were all on the generous side, and their deliciousness meant we all stuffed ourselves! Desserts too (although shared) were irresistible.Prices were fair, and the range of ales excellent - try the Tippling Bitter!

Enquiries, via e-mail, of David as to what was available brought an immediate response of a very positive and informative nature, the like of which one always hopes for but seldom gets. This is such bonus when trying to organise a large group. Being a small pub we were welcomed on the day in small groups, given a warm reception, made to feel very much at home and supplied with all the tea, coffee, drinks and refreshments one could possibly ask for in a truly friendly manner. As an example of how to manage enquiries, how to welcome visitors and with friendliness and efficiency of service this would take some beating. I would have no hesitation in returning for an evening meal with friends just to see if initial impressions were carried right through the full cuisine. I would be very surprised if it were not so. Having just moved to the village we thought we would try the Thai food on a Thursday evening at The Tippling Philosopher. What a lovely discovery! The pub has good real ales and serves proper Fentiman's Ginger Beer, and the service was excellent. As for the food, well, we had a starter each (dumplings and a minced lamb dish) and a main course (fish with a spicy sauce and chicken Thai curry with boiled rice) and everything we tasted was delicious, freshly cooked beautifully presented. Although they didn't have a vegetarian main course listed, they said they are happy to prepare a veggie option, but best to let them know when you book – and do book, as it gets very busy. Although the Thai dessert had sold out by the time we got to considering puddings, the Jam Roly Poly off the main menu went down very well. And the prices were reasonable too – around £9 for a main course.

If you want a friendly atmosphere, good ales. and a delicious and good value meal, you have it here. The décor is basic but pleasing, the staff are welcoming and Dave (the owner and chef) always cooks to a high standard and enjoys a friendly chat if he is not too busy in the kitchen. It is well patronised by locals, never a bad sign!

We popped in for a quick drink whilst driving through. Lovely little pub. The landlord was lovely, and kindly gave us some firewood to take away when we asked where we could buy some from. Would go back if we were in the area.

Decided to try another local pub this evening, so stopped off at The Tippling Philosopher, which was a great surprise.Very friendly village pub, good ale too.The service was very slick, the steak was cooked to perfection and accompanied by all the usual trimmings, all in all a very tasty meal with a good bottle of wine included in the price.Pudding was excellent too.

The garlic mushrooms were very nice but beware if you don't like lots of garlic butter (YUM). I also had Venison which was cooked to perfection and Jane had the sea bass which she loved. So much food we couldn't manage a dessert.Free Wi-Fi and cash back and very friendly staff makes this an all round winner.

Well, after reading the previous reviews, i must say that i'm shocked! My visit to the restaurant was brilliant. We had great servce, and the food was top notch too! i'm a fussy eater, and all of my awkward requests were met without exception. Frankly, the people working made me feel very welcome. I'd definitely recommend this place to anyone!

Stopped here with my family on the way home from a caravan holiday in Devon. We ate in the garden and had a great meal,I had a rump steak which was possibly the nicest steak I've had in a long time (I'm told it comes from the local butchers, over the road), with chips and all the trimmings my wife had a Prawn salad and it was very very colourful and even had strawberries and raspberries in it, our two sons had chicken burgers (which we didn't realise came with chips). Good value for money as a lot on the plate. We had two small glasses of wine and two cokes and it was less than £40!!!! Only thing that let it down was there were wasps everywhere but that has been the case for our entire holiday. The staff (landlord and landlady, seem to run it alone!) here were friendly and knew a lot about the area and the products on sale, my son is a bar man at our local pub and was asking lots of questions about the real ales! All in all a nice place to stop. Would visit again.

I went to this pub last week and I was disgusted at the service I recieved from the man from behind the bar it wasn't a busy period and it took me about 15 minutes to be served and when I did eventually get served they didn't have my 1st and 2nd choice of drink so had to settle for a flat coke as when I told the man it tasted as the gas had gone he shrugged his shoulders and gave me a very blank look .... I would never step foot in this pub again and I deffinately wouldn't recommend this pub as a family friendly ... DISGUSTING !!!

A good range of real ales to be had, hence the mis-spelling. Spacious and friendly, been here for both lunch and dinner and the food has been of good quality. Plenty of room in the car park compared to the other main pub in the village, and unlike that one, never had a bad beer.

My daughter lives in Milborne and we visit regularly. We always go to "The Tipps" for a meal. The atmospher is great,no loud blarry music or screeching kids. The staff are great and after only a few visits in the year they remembered us. We have had no problems with parking and really enjoy the garden in the sunshine. Milborne Port is a lovely village and the villagers make you welcome and its always very pretty. The jubilee celebrations where fantastic and alot of thought goes into the arrangement of all the events.Would definatley recommend a visit to the tipps and milborne.

Best gammon that me and the missus has ever had. Nice buttery roasties and plenty of vegetable options. Plenty of seating and car parking spaces. Nice large outside area for summer time food and drink. Staff were friendly and reasonably priced food. Downside was that the carpets needed a really good clean, but I'm sure that this will be seen too in the not too distant future.

The Lord Nelson is our local so an easy choice for a family get-together to celebrate our ruby wedding anniversary. We had a table for 20 and took over the skittle alley which doubles as a function room. Everyone attending had a great time and the pub and staff received lots of compliments. They are all extremely friendly and professional, and Mark’s food is excellent. Not sure we’ll make the skittles team though!

It's a pub that serves perfectly decent food. But it's not a "gastro-pub" (whatever that is). You can go in and be sure to get a moderately good meal for a moderate price. Nothing fancy. No pretentions of being anything it isn't. Just a country pub catering for a decent honest local clientele. And that's a worthwhile and valuable service I appreciate.

I genuinely have to applaud the staff. This chain has a particular modus operandi, which is a challenge in itself. Being both affordable and hospitable to the masses in tandem is no easy task. The Cerdic management can be commended on those it employs, namely those that stand up rigorously to the extreme varied volumetric patron numbers and the pressures that this produces, especially given the size of the establishment. It is not for me when the 'masses frequent on their evening of well deserved leisure' but outside these times, it serves my purpose.
