Could be friendlier, popped in for lunch…food not too bad but staff absolutely don’t want to be there! Shame really as first place in a long time we didn’t leave a tip! Put some smiles on your faces lads and may go home with a few Bob more than your wages. First time a cafe has refused a glass for a can of coke…avoid!!!

The size is inversely proportional to how good the staff and food are. I had a scotch special, scotch pie , haggis and beans. The haggis was vastly superior to the haggis I had in a " Restaurant" the previous night. The Thistle stop is just off the Royal mile in Edinburgh, but if you miss the sign, you will struggle to find it, however the search is well worth it

Didn't get a chance to sample the food as staff were so rude! Saw their sign on the street saying, 'Open', so went inside. We were met by a bloke who said, 'Sorry, we're not open yet. Give us 10 minutes'. We walked away and went back quarter of an hour later. As we approached, a young girl came out and said, 'They're not open yet. They said to give them 10 minutes'. Once again we went away and went back 15 minutes later. This time, we walked in and a member of staff sat at a table said, 'I've told you guys before, come back in 10 minutes! Our chef hasn't turned up yet'. I said we wouldn't be back and went to Nero's just down the road. Much more friendlier staff!! If the food is anything like the staff, I'd steer well clear!!

Absolutely basic as basic can get. Not just basic, but terrible too. And expensive! We got a table as a family of 5, and I was a bit disappointed at the menu. And at £17 for a burger and chips I should have been! I ordered a cheese and tomato panini and it came with some stale tortilla chips, and was actually made with a couple of the cheap plastic cheese that costs 3p to buy!! We ordered drinks (cans) but no glass offered - was just given a straw. The chips looked like they’d been fried a few times. The bacon looked like it had been pre-cooked then microwaved. And to top it all off it cost £69 for 5 of us - two burgers, two paninis and one toastie!. Honestly, avoid, avoid, avoid.

Definitely worth nipping down to this little cafe. All day breakfast and the Scottish Breakfast hit the spot. The haggis was spicy and not dry as was the blood pudding. One of the staff (a member of the family) had spent time Down Under so knew how to make a proper large flat white. Cost little spot after a windy and cold day at the Castle.

Not cheap, not cheerful. But, when you can't find a table in any of the main cafe's and restaurants what are you going to do? It is what it is, they provide a basic service and I guess if you don't like the look of it you move on. Go to say though, the person waiting on the tables could be a touch friendlier, I don't want jazz hands but I would have liked a salt pot but was too intimidated to ask!

A group of us stopped here because there was haggis listed on the menu and our friends wanted to try it. There is a variety of options on the menu so some tried the haggis sampler, one a cheese & haggis toastie, and another had a haggis roll. Thumbs up to all of it. We sat outside but there is a bit of seating inside. One thing that needs fixed is the handle on the door to the toilet.

Location was great - quirky little place underground. However, the food we had was terrible. Wanted toasted sandwich - but they only had white bread. When we asked if they had brown the reply we got was “you won’t get brown in a place like this” So, instead of white sliced bread I went for the panini option - except it wasn’t a panini. It was a long bread roll that they flattened. My choice was cheese and tomato - what I got was a slice of ‘plastic’ pre-sliced bright orange cheese in the middle with a couple of bits of tomato - it was basically a slab of bread with little filling. When I was asked if everything was okay I said I was disappointed by the pre sliced cheese and again was told I shouldn’t expect more from a “place like this”

I should have seen the clues early on but I thought it was just a bit quirky. When I asked if our toasties could be on brown bread I was told that you wouldn't get brown bread in "a place like this". The toasties we got here were made with processed cheese slices. The chips were so poor I couldn't finish them and that almost never happens. The staff tried hard but seemed a bit overwhelmed.

I booked the Beehive for an annual get together with my cousins. There were 14 of us in our party and we all thoroughly enjoyed our evening (6pm to around midnight). The food was great and so was the service. We were given a semi-private area at the back of the upstairs, which worked perfectly for us. I am sorry that I didn't catch his name (might have been Neil?), but he worked upstairs and behind the bar and he went out of his way to make sure our party was well attended to. He definitely made our night. We will certainly be back!

I almost never leave reviews, but I felt I had to because I felt so ripped off here. I'm a local and had time to kill before work so I popped in for lunch. The staff were friendly and the service was quick, but I got the smallest piece of avocado toast I've ever seen for a tenner. I'm still hungry. I sort of knew it would be a mistake to go somewhere touristy but now I know I definitely won't be back. There are nicer places on Cockburn Street, never mind the rest of the Old Town.
