We called in for a quick drink before going to dinner in another restaurant. The barman ignored me and my two friends. After serving two people who had been after us in the queue I said to him that he maybe hadn’t realised we were in front of both the people he had just served and would he mind serving us next. He responded by scowling at me and putting the palm of his hand up and dismissing me. So very rude. Safe to say we left and won’t be back.

Just got home from Belfast. Fell into this place yesterday (Sunday). Only popped in for a couple of drinks but ended up staying about 7 hours! Lots of live music. 3 different acts who were all fab! Spent hours dancing and would have carried on if they weren't closing. Atmosphere was buzzing. Popped back today for some lunch. I had the seafood chowder which was amazing, 2 friends had the Irish stew which they loved and another gad the pea and ham soup - which was massive! Would definitely recommend and would 100% go back when next in Belfast.

Went to this place on couple of days cause it has good reviews and people recommended this place to me. On the first day, one lady told me there’s is no space for one person! I have seen plenty empty seats, then I left the place anyway. On the second day, another woman told they don’t provide food for only one person! What’s the logic? Then I asked can I do take away, and she said no. This was very arrogant and leave me with many questions. 1. Is Northern Ireland no good for solo travellers, or diplomats or solo students? 2. Is this restaurant racist? 3. If you have enough space why can’t you provide food for one person? 4. Is Northern Ireland safe to travel?

Absolutely loved this place! From the outside it seems quite ordinary but there is a palpable air of charm and homeliness to the place which lends to the whole experience. Service was swift and efficient but very friendly and attentive. Menu itself was elegant and I particularly loved their Thirsty Goat Boxty with traditional Irish potato cake, chicken, mushrooms and wilted spinach served with a creamy white wine sauce. Quite filling and very reasonably priced! Husband got the Seafood Chowder which was really excellent albeit a bit seafood-minimal. Still worth it but had they really gone all out on this, it could have been one of their go-tos, for sure. I would love to come back one day and it's really the sort of place you want to keep returning to for your nights-out and the spaciousness of the restaurant is perfect for parties and gatherings. What a wonderful and well-fed GOAT!

First time in Belfast for a 40th. Came here for drinks on a busy Saturday night. Total carnage from the moment we set foot in the place. Staff clearly out of their depth with the demand of people requiring service. We were robbed of a drink we paid for and when we challenged it and asked if we could please have what we paid for we were met with filthy looks and eye rolls from the so called ‘manager’. I think all staff especially the manger require more training on how to not only do their job correctly but also how to actually treat customers like human beings and not something they’ve trodden in! It was exceptional and the portion was generous. When I returned a few months later, chicken and waffles had been removed from the menu, but they made it for me and my friend anyway. This was extremely accommodating. We also had a Sunday afternoon reservation that we moved several times, which was no problem at all. My only “complaint” is that their chicken and waffles dish seems to have been temporary. Please bring it back!

I had a stand off with the waitress (who closed our tab before we finished) THE waitress came back slamming my drink down saying she asked if we wanted deserts and anything else which was a lie. We were expecting to have more drinks there but obviously lost in translation. Very rude Waitress. Would not recommend this place if you can't understand the accent you have no chance with the staff! . Staff needs to be trained in the hospitality sector.

Unfortunately, this is my second negative experience with the food at Devenish, and I’m writing this review in hopes of helping improve future visits for others. During my first visit on a Sunday, the food was cold. My partner had to send his ribs back, which were then returned after being reheated in a microwave, still of poor quality. My Sunday roast had cold portions, including the meat, mash, and vegetables. I decided to give it another chance last weekend with friends, but once again, the food fell short. My fish batter was completely separated from the fish and lacked freshness. The chips were lukewarm, and my friends experienced the same issue. To top it off, my latte was served barely warm. It seems like food and drinks are sitting too long before being served, which affects the quality. While the staff are always lovely, I won’t be returning for the food unless these issues are addressed.

Food was lovely but the service was extremely slow. This was around 2pm om a weekday and there was only 3 other tables all with 2 people on each, in a place that has around 20/25 other tables. It wasn't that the food took a long time to be cooked but just to even get our order taken. We were given no drink menu and had to ask for one when they asked what we wanted to drink. When we received our food no one came to check how it was. After when we had finished our food, which was lovely (especially the leek soup), our plates were left to the side of 20 minutes before they were taken away. Then a further 5 mins to be asked if we'd like to see dessert menu etc. This was despite there being loads of staff on, enough actually for each table. Disappointing service for the price you pay.

Six friends arrived for lunch in McHughs on our annual day out in Belfast together and were shown to the upstairs restaurant area. All very nice , exposed brickwork showing its historical past ,nice views etc. We all ordered the Irish Stew and some beers - a safe bet one might say!The waiter was friendly and helpful. The stew however was dreadful - very few potatoes not much meat and what there was ,was swimming in gloopy, odd tasting gravy. We were a local group from rural Ards who know their Irish Stew ,but everyone was disappointed at what was presented. After pointing out this issue we had to ask to see the manager . She arrived and after looking at what remained in the dishes she said she would speak to someone and disappeared. That was the last we saw of her. No ‘sorry about that and hope you come back again’ - nothing ,she just hid.We finished our beers ,asked for the bill , from which the stews had been removed and paid for the beers. We were astonished the manager didn’t return and there was an overwhelming sense of a lost opportunity by the manager to make the best of a bad situation. She made a disappointing meal worse by ignoring us and the issue. It wasn’t about discount or anything - it was about somebody agreeing the stew was poor and apologising. McHugh’s - get your act together for the sake of the real tourists!

Best Ulster fry in Belfast. Great options offering anything you want for breakfast. Good quality and reasonably priced.
