Fish City in Belfast

Food was average. Way to expensive and we were charged a 30 pound service tax. Wouldn’t go there again. Service was fine.

This place misleads you with a sign of Fish n Chips saying 12,75 pounds for a portion... Except in small letters it says "from" in font size 4. End up paying 22.50 pounds per portion and a ridiculous service fee. Taste overall was decent, but chips were soft. I would expect better for that price.

Crispy yet delicate fried cod with a tangy aggregated tartar sauce in a beautiful decorated restaurant front. The sticky toffee pudding is also a delight with its subtle after taste of whiskey. A must dine destination.

Expensive £28 for grilled salmon, smallish piece. And a few small veg.

Stopped here by chance during a stopover in Belfast, we enjoyed simple but very well-prepared dishes! I recommend it if you are spending lunch in Belfast!

Scampi I had & was frozen Asian prawns done in a lite batter.pure dirt they where.& then wee had fish.frozen wasn't the word. It was the worst fish I ever ever had.2 fish & chips £48.a rip off.we will never ever be back.

This restaurant used to be amazing. Wonderful staff and service and truly great food. It won British Fish & Chip Restaurant Award then the owners cashed in their chips, excuse the pun. It was sold. Prices went up in the moon, quality of food deteriorated imo. I have been there many times but my recent visits have been disappointing on many levels. Staff not local and don’t have the same friendly service we had from the NI staff. No one ti chat with. No one to check if you enjoyed your meal.

Great food enjoyed by us both. I enjoyed traditional Fish & Chips with tartare sauce and mushy peas washed down with a locally sourced IPA. My wife enjoyed a lovely homemade fish pie with greens which was delicious and enjoyed with a local G&T. We enjoyed the meal and went for a treat while visiting Belfast and I had sticky toffee pudding and ice cream, while my wife enjoyed a coffee and ice cocktail 🍹 Overall a lovely experience ✅

BEWARE! WORST SERVICE AND OVERPRICED HORRIBLE FOOD EVER!!! Delayed menu delivery and initial contact by server, food came before drinks, and the food was TERRIBLE! Way overpriced, couldn't eat anything due to cheap overpowering flavors, but no one even checked to see if we were OK. Could not eat the (£24 for half dozen) oysters; the mussels had so much onion that it was all you could taste; and we each had one mussel-but no one came to table to check or remove anything. I had to walk in to request the check after never receiving the drink I ordered 30 min seconds prior. Pathetic excuses because they had 2 large (naive probably tour groups) parties booked upstairs-if you can't manage your business properly, then don't try to be greedy.

Plenty of shell but moules no bigger than a finger nail in a cream sauce that could've benefitted from seeing the inside of a pan a while longer.

We were going to book an evening meal but decided to go and have a look before booking as it wasn't cheap and we wanted to make sure it would be worth it. It is advertised as the best fish and chips in Belfast and I cannot comment on the food as we didn't get so far as to eating there. Inside it is very much like a low level fish and chip shop, sort of a poor man's Harry Ramsdens. The formula tables were chipped and in poor condition and chipped and the chairs were cheap and nasty. There was also loud pop music blaring over the speakers = not a relaxing classy atmosphere as one would have thought from the prices, so we decided to give it a miss

We had a very good meal here. The service was friendly. We had to move because the air conditioning in the middle of the restaurant was too drafty. The prices aren't exactly cheap, but you get very high-quality and tasty food.

Well located restaurant with nice outdoor seating area, (which was great for people-watching)! We enjoyed our meals, (I had the smaller size fish and chips, my partner had the Irish stew). The restaurant offered Wi-Fi and it was more than adequate for our requirements.

The food was good, the location very welcoming and well arranged. The problem is with the false advertisement at the entrance. Where they presented you with Fish and chips with potatoes, mashed peas and sauces for the price of £12.75, but when you receive the order you do not have the sauces included nor the mashed peas, you have to order them. For the small portion on the menu it does not say that you have to pay separately for sauces or for the mashed peas, instead for the large portion it is specified. The waiter asked us if we wanted vinegar for the potatoes but did not bring it to the table. Quite disappointed with their way of promoting the products and their false advertisement.

Food was excellent and location is very convenient. The only thing that is lacking is the service needs to improve! I had to ask for a waiter twice. A drinks order and waiter didn't leave cutlery down. The food wins, cocktails great and service was just mediocre.

Good fish and service has a feeling of all a bit measured.

A good restaurant to enjoy fish and chips, either cod or haddock. The drinks are not too expensive, however the price of the fish and chips, although delicious, is not plentiful enough for the price (£22.xx 🫠). On the other hand, the staff is very helpful and super friendly.

We have been eating at the restaurant and they have given us excellent treatment. A very good meal. As director of the CPR Monte Chullo. And as an Erasmus requirement with our students, we advise you to visit and enjoy.

It has been a pleasure to go to a place like this, to eat one of the best dishes I have tried in all of Belfast, and the treatment from the boss has been sublime, 100% recommended.

I’ve only been here twice but I’ve been happy with both experiences. I would highly recommend getting the mussels. I love mussels and these are some of the nicest I’ve had! The Guinness wheaten bread is also to die for. Our waiters were very also very attentive. However the chips were no better than your average chippy chips and a quarter of the portion for £6…

Watch your service charge on your bill . Was in with my family on Monday 28/4 2025 6 of us We just had 1 course ,Bill was £160.00 then applied a 25percent sevice charge took bill to over £180 . Sorry a will decide if I want to apply service charge mate . not you . Took service charge off bill ,was dropped to £160.00 . Not tight in anyway . but I will decide if you get 25 percent tip mate not you

Very good quality fish & chips experience

During our guided tour of Belfast with the girls, we stopped at Fish City—and it turned out to be more than just a lunch spot. The location is ideal, right in the centre, and it felt like a natural extension of the city’s vibe. Our guide shared local stories that made the experience even richer, especially as we learned about Belfast’s maritime roots while tucking into beautifully cooked seafood. The fish and chips were crisp and fresh, and the prawn tacos were a fun surprise. The service was warm and attentive, and I really appreciated their sustainability efforts. The only reason I’m not giving five stars is the pricing—some dishes felt a bit steep—but the quality and atmosphere made up for it. A memorable and tasty way to connect with the city!

Very expensive fish and chips at £22

The food was amazing, and so was the service! The staff—especially Geetoh and Sky—were incredibly nice and friendly. Hands down, the best fish and chips I’ve ever had!

Was in for the 1st time yesterday with my husband and daughter. Was offered a complimentary cocktail for mother's day. Staff were excellent as was the food. Great quality and presentation and reasonably priced. Will definitely dine there again. Would highly recommend.

Food 🍛: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ I tried their 'award-winning' Fish-&-Chips. That MSC Haddock was great! It was juicy and fresh. Their fries were good enough. Tartare sauce was excellent. That said, I would raise an eyebrow with their pride of 'award-winning'. I do understand that taste is subjective, but I have had a bigger portion and better tasting Fish-&-Chips in The Island House in Wolverhampton. Nevertheless, try it out yourself. I'm sure you will enjoy it. Price 💸: ⭐⭐⭐ Expensive. For the price, I believe the portion size of haddock left more to be desired. Ambience: ⭐⭐⭐ Slow pop music in the background. The bustle of customers. Some decorations with chains. Tightly spaced seats. It's alright. Service 🛎️: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent. Very professional and polite. I wanted a seat near the window, so the hostess took me to an intermediate seat while she cleared a window-side table. Waiting ⏳: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Busy on a Thursday afternoon. Fortunately, I found a table. The food was served to my table in 10-15 minutes.

If you don't try fish & chips here, you haven't tried it right. Highly recommended.

A disappointing visit, fondant potatoes were mostly inedible, food was warm not hot and the bouillabaisse was a few bits of fish on top of a tomato sauce. The biggest issue though were the staff, plates were almost dropped onto the table rather than being placed, staff were snapping at each other and arguing in the open plan kitchen while a few ran round doing everything, it was like we were in an episode of Ramsay's kitchen nightmares!

First time here. Nice friendly welcome from staff. Seafood chowder is super fresh and delicious! Highly recommended, very expensive though £13.50 for a small bowl

Unbelievable food!! The best mussels I’ve had in life (and I’ve had a lot lol). Fish pie and coconut and ginger fish stew are amazing too!

Very expensive for food that was ok (not really particular though) but portions extremely small. Not worth it. I will never spend again 32 pounds for a tiny apetizer, a slice of bread and a glass of vino verde.

Algunos de los artículos del menú de GF no se servían a la hora del almuerzo. Pedí patatas fritas, pero me dijeron que solo están disponibles por la noche. Las papas fritas se describieron como GF, pero al sondar (y necesitaba sondear) me dijeron que se cocinan en el mismo aceite (o mejor dicho, como me dijeron que goteaba la carne de res) que el pescado rebozado, así que no son GF. 

Tenía la esperanza de tener pescado con patatas fritas pero con el pescado a la parrilla (la masa de GF no es una opción aquí - ¿por qué no? ) y sin opción de patatas fritas de GF opté por la sopa de marisco que era un plato decepcionante - más una salsa que una sopa y servida con pan de GF (bien! ) y mantequilla (que sabía un poco apagado o manchado - no tan fino! ) 

Esta es la quinta o sexta vez que como en Fish City y esta fue con mucho la peor experiencia. 

A menos que las restricciones dietéticas se atiendan un poco mejor, no me inclinaría a regresar.

Seriously I have no idea why this gets such good reviews. Have people not been to a proper chip shop before. Was there today and was a total ‘what’ moment. Hugely overpriced and the ‘award winning’ fish and chips? My haddock came out and was barely noticeable on top of the chips. Finding nemo, more like finding the fish. What on earth is up with the portion size! Was it just me, others who got the fish and chips as they passed me I looked enviously at as you could see theirs at least. Incredibly poor. Please people just try local chippies, there’s several only minutes drive away who would blow this place out of the earth, John Longs, Spences and Moyola as a few that pop to mind. Oh and at least if you’re running a posh chippy, try and have salt in the shakers, we had to try two tables to find some. Don’t waste your money, two fish suppers and two drinks, £55!! Nuts

High quality and tasty fish & chips. Desserts were lovely too. Nice sweet cider and the Guinness is a great pint.

I went here for lunch with my wife. We both had the fish and chips with mushy peas and tartare sauce. The fish was perfect, moist with thin crispy batter and full of flavour. The wife had a lemon meringue tart for desert and was very impressed. Additionally the service was perfect and the female owner was very warm and welcoming.

Very over priced for what you get. Fish portions are tiny. My local chippy does a better job for a fraction of the price. You’d expect a jumbo piece of cod hanging over the sides of the plate for what they charge. Very disappointing. Must be the high rent prices for where it’s located that’s forcing them to charge top dollar. Sorry guys but, I’d avoid this place. Didn’t deliver and I’m out of pocket big time! I’m amazed by some of the 5 star reviews I’m reading. Not my experience I’m afraid. The website suggests much more which, is somewhat misleading.

Nous voulions déguster le fish and chips traditionnel pour notre voyage en Irlande. Le Fish and chips de Fish city a rempli toutes nos attentes ! La friture était parfaite, fine et croustillante. Le tartare et la purée de petit pois étaient très bons. (A savoir que cela est un supplément mais qui vaut le coup). Le service était très qualitatif. Le serveur était naturel, et à l’écoute. En somme une très bonne adresse où manger le fish and chips de vos rêves.

Although I've been to Ireland many times over the years I've never visited Belfast but I must say I loved our visit here ,its a fascinating city,an interesting history, great architecture and wonderful kind hearted people who are genuinely pleased to see you in their city,the pubs ,bars, cafe's and restaurants are top notch, one of the best restaurants we visited was Fish City. Walking in and I knew I would enjoy my visit here, interior is superb, its got a nautical look to it with fishing boat related features, an eye catching serving bar dominates the main room, lovely decor and furnishings and plenty of seating options spread throughout this restaurant both inside and outside looking out onto the busy and bustling Ann Street, its just a really good restaurant to chill out in. My twin brother and I were here on a bitterly cold January afternoon, we were greeted and seated by a very pleasant member of the bar team, we ordered Whitewater Brewery Belfast lager, these were served in excellent condition, we perused the menu while we sipped our beers which were totally delicious, in the end we both opted to have a very simple meal but also a really tasty meal namely fish and chips, a short wait and our meals arrived and what a treat. Fish was superb, lightly battered, flakey inside and beautiful seasoned, chips were delicious and coupled with our beers made for a great dining experience in a wonderful restaurant, couldn't fault anything about our visit here, great restaurant, superb meals and beers but most importantly lovely staff,so friendly who made my twin brother and I so welcomed in their restaurant, can't wait to go again next time we're in Belfast. Fish City is easy to locate along Ann Street. Opening hours are; Monday, closed. Tuesday to Thursday, midday till 3pm. ,5pm till 8.30pm. Friday & Saturday, midday till 9pm. Sunday, closed. A wonderful restaurant in a wonderful city ,most definitely well worth checking out if you're in the area or planning a holiday to Belfast.

Very disappointed with my experience in this restaurant, only came to eat as Fish City was supposed to be the number 1 fish and chips in the city, no flavor at all, I was expecting an exceptional dish as it was very pricey, very small portion and nothing special about the food, will never go back again

£23 for a bang average fish supper

Fantastic masterclass on oysters! The owner John chatted with us and explained everything oysters plus a lot more about the marine environment, and how the business started - a lovely person and very interesting. The chef Nick then showed us how to shuck oysters safely and talked about flavours, taste etc. Totally recommend this experience, the oysters were amazing and the chat great!

Quick to be seated, waiter took order without writing it down, 2 cod, chips, peas, tartar sauce, one traditional christmas dinner, 2 coke, 1 fanta. We waited about 15 to 20 minutes, were served 3 cod and chips when told waiter we had ordered a christmas dinner we were told "sorry I will get that for you now" we waited another 15 minutes meaning by time the dinner arrived at the table the 2 who ordered the fish had all but finished their meals leaving the 3rd person twiddling their thumbs. Fish were small and greasy. Coke tastes like the cheaper versions or home brands bought from local supermarkets. I used to love going here for lunch but so disappointed especially as the fish and chips alone were just over £18. Don't think we will return.

Very unpleasant experience. Booked a table online and on arrival, despite the restaurant was empty, our table wasn't ready. Then, only one of the two starters we ordered came, and we had to wait a long time for the second one to come. Then, the waitress asked if we would like any dessert but he hadn't had our mains yet! Then finaly came the mains. The braised fish was good and well cooked but the seafood pasta was way to spicy (they had left the seeds of the chili and there was a lot of chili in there ( uneatable even for me who is used to eat very spicy). They re-cooked it without chili but they must have added some bacon or meat in it to give some flavor but without telling...very bad. The service was very disorganized, waiters running everywere resulting in a great lack of efficiency. And the prices are way to high for what you get in your plate. If I pay a such amount I expect exeptionnal food and good service. Would not go there again and would definetely not recommend.

Visited 05/01/2023 to eat in at lunch time, met by Barry as we entered who met our needs and sat us downstairs and obtained a high chair for our granddaughter who came with. Service was spot on and food came quickly and as you can see from the pictures well presented I loved the unlimited chips option with the fish n chips. I’d say the mushy peas portion that comes with is a tad small, luckily the eldest didn’t want hers so all good 👍🏽 but if your not so lucky I’d order some more to enjoy the meal more. The vegetarian Thai Green Curry was flavoursome and not too big a spicy kick 👌🏽🍛 also the portion is a great size and definitely fulfilling. One thing to add an international customer came later and sat nearby and Barry offered to get the menu translated, now that folks is another level of service I’ve certainly not experienced before and he was back in a flash with a tablet ready to translate, luckily the customers already used google translate and we’re away but this has stuck with me around a natural non forced way of service to a customer and for me absolute winner 🏆 I have been before but never during day, usually in evening so menu was smaller but loved Fish City and will continue to visit when over in Northern Ireland visiting family, highly recommended ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The fish we ate certainly wasn't on a "seefood" diet. For the price we paid, we would have expected the portion size to be more than what we actually received. The atmosphere was ok. Overall we left feeling not over nor under but just whelmed.

Lovely food, excellent service.

My wife had haddock and chips which she really liked. I had the xmas special. The green veg accompaniment was really good- very fresh and great taste. Turkey, gravy and other veg was tasty. Atmosphere is a little upmarket cafe but the staff were excellent. Will eat again if shopping nearby.

Fish city is not a cheap restaurant. Fish and chips costs 23 pounds after 5pm because that’s dinner and £16 before then because that’s lunch (not my menu or my rules). The quality may be worth it but 23 pounds is a lot for fish and chips. We went to the restaurant and arrived at 5:01 after some google fun. I waited to talk to someone for circa 3 mins because there was no one around and asked whether we were too late for the pre 5 deal. The restaurant is pretty much empty (most other restaurants are busy) so I am optimistic. The response was a very abrupt nope we have already started dinner and that is end of discussion. I am sure there is a restaurant perspective and they are free to post that but there is a customer perspective. There is cut off point and I get it but seriously think about your customer service at a few minutes past 5 when your restaurant is pretty much empty. My view is that this is poor service and that may be controversial. My perspective is that if this is the way you treat someone you are trying to woo as a customer then what does it look like after you have got me as a customer.

Well located restaurant (busy street). The setting of the restaurant is nice and has many tables (room upstairs). Concerning the rather good service, maybe the order taking is a little slow but I think it depends on the crowd. Regarding the food, we are on standard UK prices. The fish and chips are not bad, we have the option of choosing the fish. However for the price disappointed that the fries are industrial.

I visited the restaurant today with my husband. We were shopping in town and wanted a quick bite before heading home. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere and the staff are very pleasant and helpful. The service was a bit slow. We were seated pretty quickly but waited about 10 mins to be served, the restaurant was fairly busy but by no means full. The food took about another 15-20 mins to arrive. We both had fish and chips with mushy peas and tartare sauce all was delicious. The portions sizes were very small for the cost. Soft drinks were also expensive. Think it was nice but way over priced for the portion size.

Indicate in most guides, it is located in the city center and open all afternoon (an advantage if you eat later) The portions are reasonable, the fish is good but if you like a lot of frying (or breading) I don't necessarily recommend it. The service is great, don’t hesitate to ask for other sauces such as tartare, ketchup or others!

We waited 20 minutes to order our food and were only able to do so after I went up to a waiter and asked them to come over so that we could place an order. Once the food arrived, we weren't given any cutlery, so I had to go up and ask for that as well. The food was OK, but the overall service was so bad that I probably wouldn't go back again.

Food was absolutely amazing, loved everything, so tasty and cooked perfectly, I had seafood linguine & hubby had muscles in white wine sauce, could not recommend this place enough

Nice food and pleasant service, however, the food is grossly overpriced and is served in extremely small portions, at almost £20 for small fish supper this restaurant is certainly not good value for money.

At £12 the fish and chips would have been OK but at £22 it should be very good, but it's not. Terrible service.

We started with the Japanese Trout (5 slices), calamari (normal, I guess), and BBQ-style prawns (5 prawns). While the food tasted nice, at £13.50 for the starter, it was definitely *not* value for money. We also ordered a bottle of house Sauvignon Blanc for £30 (which seemed excessive — it was probably an £8 bottle of wine at best). Then, we had three fish and chips — one haddock, two cod. I requested the batter to be lightly cooked, but the waiter said that wasn’t possible. This led me to believe that the fish was pre-battered and partially cooked, rather than being freshly prepared, as you'd expect for £23.50 per portion. When the fish and chips arrived, the portion size was less than half of what you'd get at a reputable fish and chip shop, The mushy peas were awful — just a tablespoon's worth in a ramekin (does anyone know how to cook mushy peas properly in Northern Ireland? They should be made with marrowfat peas, butter, salt, and pepper, then mashed until soft). I understand you have overheads being in the centre of Belfast, but you clearly don’t understand value for money. I won’t be coming back. ---

I like Sainsbury's it has a good range of gluten free options but it would be nice if it carried more ambient products like some other Sainsbury's.

The place to go for Fish & Chips in Belfast. Really fried nicely. The batter is so thin yet crispy. Holding the fish meat so well..The fish is fresh and juicy. Nicely cooked fries as. The tatar sauce with the mushy pea combo is tasty. I recommend eating this with vinegar. Good ol' way of eating this dish.

El restaurante estaba lleno para la cena y los servidores parecían mantenerse al día con el ritmo. Bastante interesante otros críticos han declarado que los precios eran altos. Los restauradores han pasado por el Covid, la inflación mundial, y los jóvenes no quieren trabajar. Hemos visto muchos de nuestros restaurantes favoritos fracasar, lo que es realmente triste, así que personalmente estamos bastante bien con pagar un poco más por experiencias maravillosas. ¡Lo único triste es que no estás en nuestra ciudad!
