Was in here yesterday from dumfries with my carlisle friend. She introduced me to thin white duke. Everything was amazing. Food wine service was outstanding. Thankyou

Starters were great but I felt the burgers were a let down, nothing really different that others offer although the chips were amazing.

We had an excellent lunch at this centrally located place in Carlisle. Food was very tasty (Salmon, pesto salad, KFC burger and Duke Burger). Nice atmosphere and good friendly service.

Food was ok , would add a dash of sauce though without making the customer pay 4£ for it . Had the Flat Iron stake and a pint of the Hawkshead Great White . All was good , service was excellent, a blonde girl looked after my table , she was friendly and professional. Place was looking very nice and clean , great architecture.

Delicious Sunday roast; as a family we order chicken, lamb and beef and all were great. Good choice of veg and well presented. Lovely modern decor too. Would definitely go back if passing through Carlisle again!

Love place to dine, especially if you're seated near the front windows. Service by the staff is excellent. They come around and keep checking to see if you need anything. The food is delicious, there are lots of drinks to choose from and cocktails.

Very attentive staff, delicious food and drinks. The cocktails were a-ma-zing! As for the atmosphere; nice and vibey music, interesting decor and over all a calm and joyful experiance. The waiters are very attentive and social :). Would visit again.

I ordered the chorizo burger from the specials menu. It was fantastic and cooked just the way I like my burgers which is a rarity as usually place over cook them. The service was also very good. Highly recommended.

We booked a family meal here on a stay over on a long journey from Scotland. The food was all fantastic, and for me one of the best beef burgers I’ve had in a long time! We had a toddler with us, they don’t have a kids menu, but suggest ordering from the small plates, this worked well for our son. We’d certainly visit again if we’re ever in Carlisle again.

We had a roast dinner which was good except no roast potatoes only mash. Meat was excellent. Waitress had an inappropriate top in and her long hair touched the food she was serving.

Great pub, bit of a tardis to be honest, it looks pretty small from the outside but it's got a few floors, loads of seating for food. We called in on the off chance of grabbing some decent food and it did NOT disappoint. Food was delicious, service was quick, Staff were lovely what more can you ask for. Interior downstairs was a bit quirky, it was alot quiter than upstairs, which was an added bonus. 2 Sunday dinners and a sticky toffee pudding with ice cream to share, 2 pints of larger and 1 pint of coke cost 50 quid. Only downside for me, was there wasn't enough gravy,

Group of 16 reserved but could not sit together. Not even in same room which was available. Half the party in warm area other half freezing with door at top of stairs left open. Food was fair enough although cooking instructions over meat was not done and wrong chips served with a few meals although they were nice

Visited here tonight as serve roast dinner in the evening on a Sunday too . Was disappointed when they had ran out of roast beef but didn’t need to be the roast chicken was simply delicious! Service was great and atmosphere very cosy . Highly recommend if you are in the area

What a wonderfully accommodating restaurant with fantastic food and exceptional service. We booked for a large group at short notice and nothing was too much trouble. I will be recommending this place to all future courses I run.

A group of us were in carlisle for a football match this weekend. We had looked on line before arriving and booked in for a meal on the first night. We weren’t disappointed! The decor is great and atmosphere nice and relaxed. The staff were friendly and attentive. The food was amazing!! When it arrived we thought the portions weren’t very big but we were all stuffed after eating! I had the steak and it melted in the mouth. We were that impressed we ate there again before leaving. Can highly recommend.

My 5 star rating is not out of habit, but a wel deserved rating. The decor really adds to the experience. The food is absolutely amazing. Everyone was really enjoying their food and we had a great time.

Booked a table for a celebratory meal for 6 here two months ago to ensure a decent table. Arrived to find only a table for a maximum for five in a cramped corner - and that would have been a squash. Manager was very offhand and dismissive and wasn’t interested in trying to find a solution even though there was a table which would easily seat 6 being used by 4 men just having a drink. He refused to ask them to move to accommodate us. We had no option but to leave and eventually found some where much nicer and friendlier. They missed out on £250 of custom and we won’t be going back there!

starters were quite nice, especially the soup. But we waited 90 minutes for our main course. We only had the table for two hours, so when we tried to order dessert, we were told that the table was needed back .There was no roast beef left, so I had chicken in a basket, which was quite disappointing to be honest. Disappointing that I didn’t have a roast, but what I ordered instead was chewy and I could’ve made it myself by grabbing some frozen food out my freezer. We didn’t actually have time for dessert, but despite only having a small selection of desserts, the one that I had wanted was not available anyway.. we were asked constantly throughout the meal if we wanted more drinks and on two occasions, despite asking for drinks they weren’t brought for us. I was cold throughout the meal and ended up putting my coat on. We checked and the radiator on left of us was not on returning home, I had a quick look on Tripadvisor, which, on balance ,I should’ve done before visiting. I see that most of my issues with the establishment have been on going issues for quite awhile so I’m guessing that either they don’t read feedback or don’t value it. I doubt very much whether we’d return again.. but I also doubt whether that matters to them.

This place is fantastic! Starting with the vibe and interior, through lovely service and ending on the food that is simply exceptional! The flat iron steak was perfectly prepared, blue cheese sauce was fantastic and the hand cut chips felt crunchy and not burned. The rhubarb and elderflower dessert was a lovely treat afterwards and it was not too heavy after a fairly sized meal either. We also loved the list of the “Bar rules” - especially No. 11! Brilliant humorous addition for guests! 😁🤩 If I could give it 10 stars, I would. We will be looking forward to coming back if we’re visiting Carlisle again ❤️

I had stopped to have a look around Carlisle for a couple of hours as a stop gap while travelling over to Newcastle, I ended up becoming quite hungry for some tea and started looking about for which places were highly recommended. This place came up so decided to give it a go, though it was busy and popular the atmosphere was warm and vibrant, the staff were friendly and mostly attentive. I decided to have the Fish & Chips and a pint of the Victoria Málaga Lager as had not seen it on Draught in many places. It is a bit on the expensive side as the Fish & Chips were about £15.50 and a pint was £5.50 however it was most certainly worth it, The Fish & Chips were fresh and melt in the mouth, full of flavour and definitely worth the value of money, the portion was just about right and found myself rather full at the end, it comes down to Quality over Quantity and this place really delivered on that side of things. I would definitely come back here if I should return to Carlisle. Highly Recommended!

An really lovely restaurant. Staff are excellent, and very accommodating, with pretty fast service. The atmosphere is nice - fairly, but not overly, busy, and nice background ambiance. Food is delicious too. A good range of options, but not overwhelming. I really could not recommend this restaurant more. Some menu items seem pricey, but are certainly worth it. I really do look forward to returning in the future!

We were a bit dismayed to see our craft beers served in a half pint glass, and no baby changing facilities at a city centre eaterie??

Such a lovely little spot. Honestly the nicest bunch of staff in carlisle, the decor is so nice. They are always happy to answer any questions and accommodate us. We were well looked after here, great food and upbeat music choices by the long haired dj. Always nice to see the staff having a good time. Drinks are the best in the city, come here for tasty custom cocktails!!!!

The decoration of the restaurant is very unique and has its own taste, nostalgic and warm; the meals are handmade egg pancakes, the fusion of cheese and eggs is rich in egg flavor, and the steak burgers: the beef inside is very thick and full, super large, Very sincere. I feel really full after finishing this meal.

Absolutely terrible service received today, over a booking misunderstanding. Make sure you do not book two tables on a Saturday afternoon or if you do, make sure you don’t all come in together or you will be turned away!!

Didn’t get served due to the previous review due to the number of ‘customers’. Our “own fault”! It was an abomination!!

Its our own fault we were told by a bartender. Our crime was to book 2 tables in different names, one in the basement for 9 and one upstairs for 6 at 12pm We were refused service due to our group being over 10. The staff did not have the gumption to let us know this was a heinous crime until we attempted to order food. Work out the maths for refusing service to 15. Rules are rules and they must be followed.

While food and service was great there is no changing table for babies or disabled children considering they had a huge amount of space in the bathroom.

Another fabulous meal at our favourite Carlisle Restaurant. The ‘Duke’ ticks all the boxes for us. Always a wonderful warm welcome from the ever so friendly staff - our bottle of Prosecco, glasses & ice bucket were on the table almost before we had sat down, as the charming waiter/server had seen us come in - now that IS service! Then a bottle of red. I had the Sunday roast beef, which melted in the mouth and accompanied by superbly cooked vegetables & Yorkshire Pudding, whilst my creature-of-habit husband stuck with his favourite Fish & Chips. Our waitress was as efficient & lovely as ever. Thank you all for your never ending fantastic hospitality & amazing food, highly recommend & we will be back.

Atmosphere was lovely. Sadly food took an age to arrive and some were warm and some were cold but not hot. Some of the vegetables were undercooked. Staff asked us so many times if we wanted more drinks. Not really concentrated on getting us our food. I use a walking stick but my son was not asked about mobility issues when booking so we ended up in the downstairs area which was a nightmare for me.

A busy, friendly pub with some fine ales and well prepared, good value food. A warm welcome for a passing traveler on a cold wet night.

Visited here Christmas Eve. Was busy but we were able to reserve a table upstairs . Service was friendly and efficient. Drinks were delicious especially the New Zealand Sauvignon. Was a lovely atmosphere and was nice to chat with all our family together at this time of year

I had the Moroccan lamb from the specials menu. Nice. Great chips. Wife had the Turkey dinner, well worth the price. Mash and stuffing under the Turkey slices. *Table service was non existent at times, not sure what the reason for that was? We sat with empty plates for at least 20 minutes. Then all the staff reappeared. Possibly a works doo downstairs. Good atmosphere. We haven’t had a bad meal yet.

The food was absolutely beautiful however the service was non existent. We had to ask someone to take our mains order, drinks order and dessert order. We were given a 25min warning that our table was required to be returned whilst we were still waiting to be served our desserts. We had just put our spoons down after eating when the waiter proceeded to bring the card machine over and bill and tell us the table was needed back and we had to leave. We hadn’t even had time to finish our drinks. We asked to speak to the manager, only to be told he was the manager. When we proceeded to make a complaint that service had been slow and we had repeatedly had to ask to be served his response was “Well I don’t know why, I’ve been on the bar all night, but I’ll have a word”. No apology or empathy. We were presented with the bill and when we went to to pay, the they had added extra charges on as they had forgotten to charge for 2 of the 3 desserts, but there was no itemisation of these, so we were not confident we were being charged correctly or if this was an attempt to add a service charge on. When we refused to pay the additional charges as we had already received our bill, the waiter then tried to imply that it wasn’t their bill, like I’m in the habit of carrying a printer around with me to print false bills off.

Ordered food and sat outside. Began pouring down so asked if we could come in with our dog. The waitress said yes. No sooner we're we seated a different meet of staff told us we had to leave that our dog was not welcome inside, despite explaining his colleague had advised us it was ok he rushed us outside while other diners watched. We had to sit in the lane as the rain didn't let up. I wish I hadn't of paid for the food in advance because we'd just up and left due to the rudeness. Food wasn't great either.

Our very favourite Carlisle Restaurant. Eat here on a regular basis. The staff are absolutely fabulous and always extremely welcoming. I particularly like the fact that the menu changes with the seasons, whilst retaining the ‘old faithfuls’. We called in on Monday without a reservation & were promptly seated in the window, ideal for people watching. I had the fillet of salmon (a new item on the menu) which was absolutely divine - served on a bed of horseradish mash, sautéed vegetables & and dill & caviar sauce - I can most highly recommend. My husband, the creature of habit, had his usual battered fish & chips. Washed down by a lovely chilled bottle of Prosecco. Thank you all again for a most enjoyable experience. Be back soon 😋

Came here for lunch. This would be my third time here and once again was really pleased with everything from food, service and overall experience. Our order was taken as soon as we were ready. Drinks arrived promptly and staff were really friendly and helpful. Great place to eat.

Called in without a booking. Welcomed at the door and shown to a table. Great menu with lots of choice. Drinks and food order were taken quickly. We ordered the lamb special and fish and chips. Both were excellent. Service was quick, friendly and efficient. Couldn't fault a thing. We will come back next time we are in Carlisle.

We absolutely love The Duke - we like to visit at least once week when possible. The ambiance is perfect! The food is absolutely out of this world with such a different menu, alongside daily specials. Highly talented chefs! What really makes this restaurant stand out for us is the amazing staff, each & every one of them special in their very unique way. So very welcoming, friendly & accommodating. They’re an absolute credit to The Duke. Nothing is too much trouble & they make you feel so at home. Thank you all for being consistently lovely. If I could make one suggestion (it’s come from my husband - the ‘Fish’ man 😂) - how about putting a Hot Pot or Shepherd’s Pie on the specials menu now & again please 😊

Booked a table in advance, which was easy to do. Not been before and were visiting family in Carlisle. Two of us had burgers which were perfect. I had fish and chips. Batter wasn’t very crispy but was fine. Had deserts - sticky toffee pudding amazing. Enjoyed it and would go again if we’re in town.

My partner and I both had the flat iron steak, with different sauces. The steaks came exactly as we asked for; the sauces were lovely; we enjoyed everything; the staff were really nice. We’ll definitely be back.

Hey love this place been so many times but today 17/10/23 Tuesday order the burger me amd partner w ehad many tines it's awesome but today mine came cool not even warm but my partner was well hot the buyer taste awesome but ha ho the waitress asked is all okay so I mention it wasn't hot she warmed it up but came back no hotter but the chips were very hot well its so sad a great place like this maybe because of the chef please sort and keep this place awesome as is it

Overall a good night out at The Thin White Duke. The service and atmosphere are not lacking - both are engaging and fun. As a group we agreed that the food was average-good (closer to good than average - thus 4 stars) nothing more. If your dish is served with thick cut fries they will almost certainly be the largest thick cut fries you will ever have - they are essentially the size of a roast potato! Quite yummy. Certainly worth your consideration when choosing a place to eat in town.

Food was absolutely amazing, all home made & suitable for vegetarians. Lovely staff, a lady at the bar made me her own little mocktail which tasted amazing, the atmosphere & decor inside is fantastic. Will 100% be coming again whenever I’m in Carlisle. ☺️
