We were greeted with a nice glass of Nua Prosecco in this Food and wine event. I started with an Atlantic Prawn salad, with Rose Marie Sauce and Melba toast. Good but average presentation. My main course was Char grilled Loin of Pork and a rather large portion it was too! with Bubble and Squeak Potato and a cider & Sage Cream Sauce. A nice plateful. The staff were friendly and attentive and the occasion was enjoyed by all.

The food for Sunday lunch was very disappointing. All four of us found the vegetables bland and tasteless. One of us ordered medium cooked beef which was overdone. Portions were not generous. We left still feeling hungry. I had the roast vegetables without the meat as I'm vegetarian and was charged the full price of a roast dinner. I am usually offered extra vegetables but not this time. The only point in the restaurant's favour was the friendliness of the waitresses.

The lunchtime menu (2 courses at £13.95) was uninspiring, nearly left to go elsewhere. The staff are sooooooooo polite, a bit over the top for my taste- lots of checking things are okay, placing of cutlery and cheesey smiling. The starter was average - wild mushroom paté which didn"t taste of mushrooms- followed by a well-cooked pork fillet in sage gravy - the best part was the dish of veg which accompanied the main - copious, perfectly cooked and well seasoned. I ordered half a beer but got presented with a pint. Not impressed.

We booked in yesterday, and explained that our soon-to-be 85 year old relative would have to be escorted from the car to the table, and was not good with too many steps. There were some steps up and down here, but the staff could not have been more supportive or welcoming towards us all on arrival. A cushion was quickly accessed for the back of my Mother in Law's wooden chair, and she later commented that this had made her much more comfortable, so she was able to enjoy her food properly. My husband then explained that he was a vegetarian, and the waitress immediately went off to see if the chef could make him a custom meal to suit his requirements. She came back with a choice of three options, all of which sounded delicious. He chose the beetroot and asparagus risotto, which definitely lived up to expectations. We two ladies chose the seafood selection in a wonderfully creamy lemon and saffron sauce, with rice. All three of us had our own individual selection of four colourful fresh veggies to accompany our main dishes. My husband's lemon meringue and my strawberry cheesecake to follow were of an equally high standard. To summarise our experience, I would say excellent food and attentive service, in a traditional setting.

It was my 22nd birthday and we decided to go to the Thatched Cottage for a family meal. In all the years we've lived in Kingsteignton, we have never been to the restaurant. Crazy! We were welcomed in to the bar area and had our coats taken by one of the waiting staff. She was very kind and polite. A great start! We sat down on the sofas and had a look at the menus, which we then ordered from. I ordered the Soup to start, followed by the Sirloin Steak and then finished off with local ice cream! Before the starters came out, we were offered a selection of fresh bread rolls. What followed that was a small appetiser of diddy fish and chips. How wonderful! The soup tasted amazing, and the dumplings were exquisite! The main course was the best of the lot. My steak was cooked Medium-Rare, and it was one of the best steaks I have ever had! Well presented which is the main thing. I work in the hospitality trade and the presentation of food is a major thing for me. It's what gives the meal that all important first impression! The red cabbage and mushrooms certainly made the dish complete. We even had room for dessert. My Dad went for the cheeseboard, which again he said was the best he has had! His partner had the Crème brûlée, which looked and tasted delicious! My Nan had the trio of sorbets and I had the local ice cream. Again, brilliantly presented! They must have been made aware that it was my birthday, as 'Happy Birthday' was written on the edge of the plate. Something so simple and small, what a nice gesture! We couldn't stomach anymore, so we then got the bill. The four of us had a great time! Top food, and service to match! We most certainly will be back. Thank you!

None the less, the restauranteurs always seem to remember us which is a small clue as to the great care that they take with everything. The food is phenomenal. Always. Always delicious, always creative and always impeccably presented. Whether for a major full house event such as New Year or an intimate dinner for two, the atmosphere always manages to seem 'just right' and the service is always attentive without being intrusive, congenial without being falsely gushing and just in fact just very friendly and Colin creates such fabulous dishes in the kitchen. The Thatched Cottage is a very pleasant place to go for a typical Sunday roast but it doesn't have any 'Wow ' factor at all. It is certainly not the sort of place to take kids too as on the 3 occasions we have visited it was full of the 'older generation ' taking traditional Sunday lunch, which suited us on each occasion as we had elderly relatives with us and to be fair, they loved it ! The service was very good (with impeccable manners!) but the food is as I say very traditional and for me uninspiring. There are other dishes available but nothing that makes you say " Oh that sounds lovely". The wine list is not too bad and overall the prices are pretty fair for what is on offer but to be honest we probably wouldn't go there if our elderly relatives didn't like it there so much. Nothing wrong with the place generally, if that's what you're looking for but for me there are better places around locally. I would never say "don't go there", it's just not for us.

This was our first time here and due to previous reviews were really looking forward to it, so I am disappointed that I cannot give it a better review. We entered via the main road entrance which leads directly into the dining area, whereas the entrance via the car park leads into a bar area. We stood there for a couple of minutes before someone came to us even though they had seen us. We were not given menus or a drinks menu so sat for at least 5 minutes twiddling our thumbs when we could have been deciding what to have. The service from then on was very good, if a bit too formal for me. The background music was so quiet you could hardly hear it. I don't like loud music but I felt it was too quiet, so there was not much of an ambiance. We chose the duck liver parfait to start which was very nice. We then had roast pork and roast beef. It was a good roast dinner, with plenty of vegetables, however the Yorkshire pudding was rubbery. The deserts were not on a menu or even a board bought to the table, the waitress read them from a list in her booklet, this means you have to decide there and then and have not much time to mull over what you prefer. I am afraid I was disappointed with the desert of chocolate brownie and ice cream, as it was not a nice moist squidgy brownie, it was basically a square of chocolate cake. Good value at £12.95 for 2 courses and £16.95 for 3.

Our starters of chicken and pinenut terrine & a prawn and crayfish cocktail were both first class both flavour wise and presentationally. Our main courses were of the roast beef special, great flavour and quality meat, which again were excellent with plenty of vegetables and traditional Yorkshire pudding. The desserts which are indeed highly tempting had us choosing the White Chocolate & raspberry cheesecake and we were very pleased with it.A good selection of coffees is available and the Americano coffees were top notch. Sweets seemed too indulgent but we managed and were delighted especially with the lemon crème chiboust(?). Will definitely book again and feel confident in taking other friends. Meanwhile, our next meal there will be a special evening as a couple.

Another restaurant eaten in that I found on Trip advisor, and another restaurant that I was not disappointed with. The food here is delicious and great quality! My mum and I had the Plaice and it was cooked to perfection and my Dad had the Beef. Every plate was empty so that is a good sign :)The deserts here are amazing..... The toffee in the sticky toffee pudding is delicious! My mouth is watering just thinking about it.What I loved most about this place is that they overheard that it was my mums birthday and on her desert plate, written in chocolate, was a "happy birthday" message. The little things like this go a long way to making it a personal experience..... SO THANK YOU!

As it was such a special occasion but it was midweek, my husband and I decided to book the Thatched Cottage on recommendation from someone at work and I'm so glad we did. The food was absolutely divine, my husband was so impressed with the desserts (the chef had written happy anniversary in chocolate on the plate) he took a photo! The discreet unobtrusive yet attentative service also made us feel very special. Will definitely keep this as our favourite 'special place' for birthdays, anniversaries etc

We hadn't visited before, despite living just a mile away. We went with friends on a Saturday night and had a great time. The service, atmosphere and food were all excellent. If anything is going to restrict the amount of times we visit in future, it is the prices. Our main courses were £18-20. A lovely place to eat, but not too often for our budget.

We visited in March of this year with my elderly Gran. My Gran likes to visit the same places for dinner so this was a little different for her, the thatched cottage is now her new favourite. Whilst she struggled a little with the access to the restaurant (via the car park) the host could not have been more helpful, he treated us all so well. He took our coats, showed us to our table, made conversation and made us feel so welcome. We weren't aware (as we had always used the car park access before) but to make it easier for my gran we could have used the front access, the host made us aware of this for our next visit. The food was amazing, we had the three course meal deal, we each also had a complimentary appetiser and bread. The food is such good value for money and so tasty. We couldn't fault any part of our visit, will most definitely be visiting again. We have visited before as a couple and with other family members and have never been disappointed.

We last went to the Thatched Cottage in September 2016 and had an excellent meal in a super atmosphere. Having been amazed at a couple of poor reviews we re-visited with some concern. However for us it was a repeat of the previous great experience. It is a cosy restaurant with attentive but not intrusive host and staff. The little extras adding to the experience. The menu is not extensive but has interesting choices. I heard the host explain to another guest that they tend to change the selection approx. every 6 weeks but test each component of every dish to ensure it works. It was clear that there were a number of others present that evening were re-visiting, some regularly which says it all.

I picked this place based on TripAdvisor reviews and was not disappointed. The building was quaint on the outside but modern and quirky inside. The staff were welcoming and immediately made us feel at home. My 90 year old mum was with us and they were very attentive to her mobility. We sat on comfy sofas by the bar as our table was prepared, ordering food over drinks. The special Easter menu had something tempting for all of us and my son had a lovely vegetarian risotto. Good food, good service, friendly atmosphere, easy parking and access all contributed to a happy family occasion.

Great food and very friendly service - nothing is too much trouble. The space has a unique blend of the original cottage details with an open and airy feel. The menu is varied to suit all tastes but controlled enough for all dishes to be freshly prepared. There is also the option for a fixed price section which means that The Thatched Cottage can be 'I want to go out' or a special occasion. The wine list offers a comprehensive range at reasonable prices Well worth a visit!

An exceptionally wonderful family meal in a restaurant with a beautiful ambience. Absolutely first class! Clear attention to detail in all aspects with courteous and charming attentive staff. The meal was a delight and exquisitely presented with generous servings. It's a long time since I experienced such an overall high standard - a flashback to the past when quality was rather more evident than it sadly tends to be today. In other words, it was devoid of anything tasteless - and that's regarding the setting and its layout!

The three of us chose the three courses for £24.95 thinking that the portions would not be generous. But we left feeling very full but very satisfied. Each mouthful from start to finish was fabulous. The chaps has soup for starters and I had fruit. For mains we had pork. haddock and chicken. All choices were lovely. For dessert two of us had the baked cheescake and one had the ice cream and sorbet selection. Everything was wonderful and the homemade bread was oven fresh and so moorish. They served a complimentary taster as well. I cannot fault the whole meal and service was excellent. Best meal I have had out for a long time and good value for money. Hot plates kept the food warm from first mouthful til the last

Fabulous evening, best ever! We had a lovely warm welcome as usual and great table. Excellent service and although the restaurant was fully booked, extra staff ensured we did not have to wait at any time. Set menu was stunning. Started with complimentary salmon and crayfish with caviar which was delicious, then srarter of salmon in vodka and beetroot on a lemon belini with cucumber salsa which was wonderful. Then we had a delicious palate cleanser of champagne and strawberry sorbet. The star of the show was the main course. Lemon sole fillets encasing a crayfish mousse and saffron tagliatelli with baby tomatoes and mange tout with fab. lemon and dill butter sauce. Wow! After a short rest we tucked into desserts of cheesecake with fruits and cream. Finally rounded off with petit fours, homemade and stunning, especially the chocolate strawberry which we shared. Then coffee, brandy etc. The staff thought of every detail with balloons, little hearts on the table, red themed dress and even a fresh red rose to take home. I love this place !!!!

This was our second visit to the Thatched Cottage and, as with the first visit in Sept 2014, our hosts had booked the whole restaurant for a private party of around 30 guests. We just could not fault the whole evening. We received a warm welcome into the cosy bar area (complete with log fire between bar and restaurant), and drinks were speedily delivered to our table. The service throughout the evening was outstanding - very attentive without being intrusive and I noticed that everyone on our large table was served together at each course so no waiting around for the last person's food to arrive before starting. All 3 courses were beautifully presented, really tasty and ample quantities - the two of us had pork & sea bass and both of these dishes were simply excellent.Drinks were a reasonable price but we can't comment on food value as our hosts settled the bill. We'll definitely be back soon.

Let me first say; I feel horrendous writing this.Booked a table for 2 for my partner's birthday, with very high expectations due to excellent reviews.Firstly, the positives: The waiting staff were lovely, nothing was too much trouble. Impeccable service, truly the best I have ever received. Having a drink in the bar area was super nice and relaxing.Great wine list. The prosecco was very good. Homemade bread was absolutely delicious. Excellent crust and really fluffy. Lots of real butter on the table to enjoy with it!They brought us a little aperitif of smoked mackerel pate and that was very tasty. As it was my partner's birthday they brought us a plate of petit fours with 'happy ' birthday' written in chocolate. A much appreciated and stunningly thoughtful touch. Sadly by this point I could eat no more and felt rather sick....Which leads me (sadly) onto the negatives:My food was just not up to the standard I would expect. My starter was avocado, red pepper and creme fraiche mousse. It was set like a layered jelly - very 70's.I initially thought the taste was ok but it quickly became very very cloying. It was over set and did not melt in the mouth. The accompaniments lacked refinement. Just some raw chicory leaves (undressed) and 3 toasted walnuts. For main course I had linguine with fresh spinach, roasted tomatoes and goat's cheese. This is where it all went wrong. It was almost inedible.Maybe it was ignorance on my part as I envisaged fresh beautiful pasta, vibrant green with spinach, some slow roasted tomatoes and fresh torn goat's cheese. What arrived was a huge muddled bowl. The cream sauce was totally overwhelming with half melted lumps of goats cheese - only distinguishable by the tough washed rind that remained. The roasted tomatoes were just roasted cherry tomatoes which popped as you tried to spear them with your fork, combining their watery middles with the cream sauce. Yuck. The was some indiscriminate veg in there......I thought I may have had a lump of roasted swede. Maybe leftovers go into this dish? All disguised by the richest, thickest sauce I have ever eaten. The saddest thing was that the pasta was lovely and beautifully made and cooked. I felt so sick after a few mouthfuls, my partner tried it and said he'd have sent it back.In hindsight I should have said something but I felt so awful as the staff were lovely. It may be just me as other TripAdvisor reviewers have loved it. We will not be returning. Really regretfully.

Delightful Sunday lunch - all piping hot and delicious - despite us being a tableful with a mix of carnivore, vegan and vegi! The star of the show was the superb vegan choc tart - with vegan ice cream - best dessert ever - and I’m not even vegan!!!
