I’m not surprised that Rufflets is in the bottom half of local restaurant rankings. We’ve had 2 disappointing experiences recently. We’ve got a long connection with the hotel: as a family we have celebrated significant events and always had great times. Something has changed. Reluctantly posting here as they’ve twice ignored my emailed feedback in the hope they now read (and take action?) – and also to warn others given their apparent lack of interest. We brought my wife’s parents for afternoon tea in June. The experience was lacklustre – this started when we arrived and we stood in the doorway of the restaurant. No-one came to welcome us. The restaurant was not busy and had all the atmosphere of a wake. The service was slow and when food did arrive was not very special. Afternoon tea should feel a bit decadent: this felt serviceable and the scones were absolutely terrible. In August we came for a birthday dinner for my sister, who has Downs syndrome. Before eating, we sat outside the restaurant. Staff made little effort to interact or make us feel welcome. I had to go to the restaurant to order drinks. They knew beforehand that it was her 50th birthday (and she was wearing a birthday badge …) and opened presents in the lounge. Staff didn’t make any effort to acknowledge the event, or engage in any way. Service from all staff was perfunctory, verging on cold. Smiles certainly weren’t on their menu. At the end of the meal, when I asked for the bill, there was awkward silence as I paid. No comment, or question (“Did you enjoy the meal?”, “Hope you had a good evening”, “Thanks for coming”). Go elsewhere – there are many better places.

As a joint birthday treat for my parents I took them to Rufflets for afternoon tea. From the moment we arrived the staff were exceptional. Polite, friendly and helpful. We were given a lovely table in the bay window and this was wonderful. In addition, two printed birthday cards (80th and 85th) were on the table waiting for my parents from the hotel. This kind gesture made their day. The afternoon tea was gorgeous, tasty and served by very friendly staff. All in all this was a superb experience and we’d happily return again in the future. Many thanks to the hotel and staff.

We took the train from Edinburgh to St Andrew’s for a day trip and booked a high tea at Rufflets. We had to hire a taxi to the restaurant since it is about 1.7 miles outside of St Andrew’s. The experience was wonderful with excellent service, The ambiance was perfect in a country sitting room with large windows next to a beautiful formal garden with roses, poppies, other flowers and herbs. The food selection was delicious and the only two decisions our server asked us to make were the tea flavor and whether we wanted to add Prosecco or Champagne to the standard tea service. The cost was reasonable for the amount of food served and was large enough to be the main meal we ate that day. There were four cold finger sandwiches, followed by two warmer meats, three desserts, and two scones. My friend ordered their gluten free option and took several of the desserts back to our hotel, if you visit St Andrew’s, this is the perfect venue for high tea and possibly booking a night in their hotel too! Beautiful property to walk in their gardens.

Afternoon Tea Failure. Arrived at 2pm as per booking and suspected we were not on the list. Shown to seats by the front of house manager/supervisor and told we would be shown into afternoon tea shortly. There we sat forgotten for 25 minutes until the Afternoon Tea Maitre De arrived and said no one had told him we were waiting. He apologised and showed us through to the seating area. We then sat for a further 25 minutes with a pot of tea before giving up and asking for the food to be boxed for taking away. At this point the original front of house person appeared and said she didn't know what had happened and walked off. Stunning customer service. The disappointment here, aside from the shocking service, is that the afternoon tea was a gift from my son. We had made the effort to travel 40 mins to enjoy the day only for it to be ruined by a service bordering on the couldn't give a sh!t.

Lovely spot that we wanted to return to having good memories from a much earlier visit. On our visit to St Andrews we had looked forward to having afternoon tea at Rufflets, and had invited another couple in what we thought would be a special treat. We were disappointed in both the quality and the nature of the items provided. With all the good bakers and bakeries in the area it should be possible to assemble a much more appetizing selection of items to make up an attractive and satisfying afternoon tea.

We celebrated our 51st wedding anniversary at Rufflets with a meal paid for by friends. The setting is excellent and the staff attentive and very professional. Our food choices were spot on and without fault. The dining room was quiet on the Sunday evening in question which was a little disappointing. However in no way did this detract from the occasion. Rufflets is one of several excellent restaurants in St Andrews.

Rufflets Hotel was a regular venue for family gatherings on numerous occasions and weekend afternoon snacks for a sandwich and coffee. Even a family wedding a few years ago and it was an amazing day. After lock down we decided to have another family gathering for a lunch in the restaurant. The food was VERY average and the staff were pleasant enough but the biggest shock was getting the bill. £££££ so expensive now. Really wasn’t worth the cost, After over a year we decided to give the hotel another try for a sandwich & coffee. If it wasn’t for a wedding party the hotel was practically empty. We went into the bar area I ordered Prawn cocktail @ £12.50 so was expecting something special. My wife ordered the Artizan bread platter @ £4.50 and we both had scone & jam. The prawn cocktail was a goblet half filled with lettuce and prawns on the top no garnish whatsoever with a couple of bits of bread. My wife’s Artizan was laughable a few slices of bread with a pat of butter. The scones were bite size and very dry. The staff again were pleasant enough. Such a shame as the venue & grounds are lovely. Surely with other comments about price and the fact it is empty should the management not be looking at the prices. What happened to the normal sandwiches not everyone wants “Devilled egg mayonnaise “ Think I will stick to going to The Links when in St Andrews.

I do not like writing negative reviews, but I am sorry to say that I have little option on this one. Simply stated, the food here falls very far short of what one might expect for the price. Receiving the bill took me beyond disappointment and into the realm of angry shock. We dined here, and it must be said that the staff were helpful and attentive. Mind you, they did not have many diners to look after, the reason for which became clearer as dinner proceeded. We all wanted the 'Scottish lamb', which would have made the cook's job easier (I am not going to honour him/her with the title 'chef'). "Dog food" is the best epithet we could find for the compressed brick of dry shredded meat; the chorizo sausage was full of bone splinters; there were the obligatory six tiny pointless dots of an unidentifiable vegetable purée; some tired girolles; all of it cold when it arrived at the table. This is a beautiful hotel, set in wonderful grounds - that does not mean it can charge ritzy prices when the cook cannot produce the goods. I could go on, but it would serve no purpose other than to remind myself that I paid a king's ransom for a tinker's dinner.

My partner, friends and I chose our starters and mains in advance of the day from a very limited menu. I had the ham hough starter, which was acceptable. My main main course consisted of a lump of chicken served with a dollop of mashed potato, and a dollop of mashed cabbage, surrounded with some gravy. The whole dish looked rather unappetising, and was served nearly cold. I've had better school dinners.

Although a beautiful setting, I would not recommend the afternoon tea. We booked this as part of our mini-moon on a friends recommendation. The sandwich fillings were tasty but the bread was stale, rock hard, as if it had been sitting out for hours uncovered. The atmosphere resembled a funeral home. We were one of two bookings and the room was in silence, I could hear the other party chewing from across the room. Some background music would perhaps have helped to add some atmosphere to the experience. The scones were nice and the cakes were ok. The service was good but there is no way I could recommend this experience which is disappointing.

Had a lovely lunch with some friends on Saturday. Food was amazing and hotel and grounds beautiful. The only slight disappointment was lack of knowledge from staff and slow service. The gentleman that served us was lovely and helped with our gluten free requests. However his young assistant was not well informed and served us non gluten free bread despite us emphasising our requirements. When asked if it would be cheaper to buy wine by glass of bottle, her reply was “ I don’t know anything about prices” As I say fab day but training required for some staff.

OK, it was a wet, windy , wintery evening, but our experience of a Friday evening dinner at Seasons was at best average. Atmosphere was lacking, attentiveness of service was passable (but lacked both warmth & enthusaism) and food was mixed as far as both standard and quality. Having read the previous good reviews for Seasons it was " not what we were expecting". You win some you lose some but we will call this one a draw & chalk it up to experience.

Our stay at Rufflets included dinner at Seasons, which we would without hesitation recommend if you're a hotel guest or staying elsewhere in the area.We enjoy fine dining but without the pomp and ceremony. At Seasons, the balance was struck just right and our experience and meal at the beautifully designed restaurant was absolutely perfect.Service was very friendly, efficient and professional, from being asked if we'd like drinks in the bar to look at the menu, throughout all courses and then afterwards in the bar.The quality, preparation and presentation of our meal was exceptional. We regularly order venison and the cut and cookery of ours was the best we have tasted for many years, it was so tender that it melted in the mouth.Given the high quality of the restaurant, service and our meal, we felt £40 per person for 3 courses was extremely good value.

7 of us had a special celebratory lunch. We had a pre dinner drink in a very comfy lounge area with a roaring fire before going through to the restaurant for lunch. The table had been set in a square so we could all see and chat to each other. (Very important). Jamie our main waiter was charming and very personable and the waitresses were very efficient. The food was delicious and plentiful. We didn’t feel at all rushed and we’re there from 12.30 until 5.00. We moved from the main restaurant to the library for our coffee and shortbread. The gardens looked beautiful and really well tended. I wouldn’t have any hesitation is recommending anyone to have a meal and a lovely time.

This proved a lovely venue to meet up for lunch. We arrived a bit early following a bracing walk in town and were able to sit in the lounge by a roaring fire and have coffee (served in a pot with homemade shortbread). We were given a round table at the window looking on to the gardens. It's a lovely dining room. Service was friendly and attentive without being invasive. The set lunch menu was actually more appealing than the one we saw online. Plenty of choice. The food itself was excellent. Interesting starters. Fish perfectly cooked. Lots of flavours and textures on everyone's plates. Desserts great too. Given that three courses is only £20 on weekdays, it was extraordinary value. A range of wines are available by the glass and in half bottles - ideal with lunch. This is a place to go when you want to linger over your meal and chat. It's slightly outside St Andrews and has plenty of parking. When I booked I was asked about dietary requirements - not an issue for us, but it's good they ask.

I heard about the Good food and service at the seasons and thought I’d give it a go for a little family birthday celebration, it is rather unfortunate that our first time dinning experience was quite rubbish I must say, one of the staff a lady in blue tweed (whose name I didn’t get a chance to know because she spent seconds with us like she had better guests to attend to) Was rude and expected me to carry my tea pot through to the restaurant from where I was seated at the waiting area. When I asked her for another she only brought me a pot of tea without milk. I assumed she knew it needed milk because of my previous order but she should have asked if she wasn’t sure. Then the food came in and the lamb shank my mum had, the soup my father had were lovely but my Terrine was so sad. My husband had the same and they cleared everyone’s finished plates except his and brought him his second course whilst a dirty one still sat in front of him. They weren’t short of staff, I’ve had food at the peat in (lovely place by the way) and had one person do everything. It must have just been a bad day. My mains wasn’t exciting either I had the hake and chorizo and I liked the chorizo but I think it was trying to hide the not so great taste of the whole dish. It can be good some days apparently so when you dine at the seasons at Rufflets make sure luck is on your side .

My family and I went there for dinner the night before my graduation. The meals were beautifully presented but that was virtually the only positive. The portions were small and not that nice. For instance my mackerel starter was the most tasteless piece of fish I’ve ever had. There was virtually nothing accompanying it, just a garnish really. I had pork for my main course. Again no potato, rice, pastry or any carbohydrate accompaniment and no vegetables to speak of. The pork belly was dried out and utterly tasteless while the pork fillet had a little flavour but an odd texture reminiscent of raw meat although I’m sure it wasn’t raw, not pleasant however. Two other members of my family did not finish their meals- one had a soufflé, which was really a quiche and the other had halibut which they thought was overcooked. I’d sum it up as pretentious, expensive, small portions and not very tasty.

We have known Rufflets Hotel since the 1970's and have eaten there many times over the years. However, we have eaten more in town since drink driving came in ( we left our car and got a taxi home! ) and we determined to visit again to the newly launched Seasons Restaurant which we had seen, but not yet eaten in. We were not to be disappointed. We got a copy of the Menu in the Lounge and ordered a Bottle of Yealands Estate Pinot Noir Rose 2017, Awatare Valley Marlborough. We drink quite a lot of Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough but this is the first time we had this Rose. It was just ideal as an aperitif and we had the remainder of the bottle with Lunch. There were 7 starters, including a choice of two soups. We chose, East Neuk Crab Spring Rolls with Yuzu, Crisp Proscuitto, Spring onions and herb salad and Seared Isle of Mull Scallops with pea Risotto, crumbled black pudding, summer truffle and cress. They were just excellent and amongst the best starters we have had, Lunch or Dinner, for a long time. Great start to our celebration Lunch. Mains were Crisp Pork Belly with potato terrine, broad beans, carrot puree and cider jus and Breast of Chicken with quinoa, avocado, pomegranate and kohlrabi salad with lemon and lime dressing. My wife said the Pork was excellent and my chicken was tasty and the salad was so refreshing! Sweets were Chocolate Marquise with cocoa nib mousse, cocoa syrup and bubble tuile......scrumptuous.....and mine was Apricot and pistachio Parfait with apricot gel, Italian meringue and lemon balm....equally delicious! While it was quiet, the service was attentive and unobtrusive and the staff engaged well in conversation....With the dessert I had a glass of Noble Wrinkled Riesling 2016 from South Australia and my wife had a glass of iced Cointreau

We had dinner for four the evening before my son's graduation at St. Andrews and had a great celebratory meal. The grounds are straight out of The Secret Garden (make sure you take a stroll after dinner). Everything was fresh and seasonal: Caledonian farm to table no doubt. We shared an excellent French red (Sancerre Rouge I think). The amuse bouche was this very yummy goat cheese over beetroot. The lamb, beef, fish and quinoa entrees were sumptuous; the service attentive and friendly. A short car ride from town centre. Worthy of a special occasion.

Fresh locally sourced is the secret sauce these days and Rufflets sticks to the theme. We had crab cocktail and a lovely duck breast all prepared exactly as one would want. Followed by local cheeses and a Balvenie 14 year old single matured in Caribbean oak. Wow!

My friend and I went along to the newly refurbished Seasons restaurant for Sunday lunch. The décor is light and fresh and has definitely brightened the room up. We opted for pate with fresh beetroot and an unusual but very tasty cauliflower panacotta to start. Both were delicious although I did expect slightly more wobble in the panacotta! For mains we chose the signature Roast Beef, which was deemed to be excellent and roasted Cod on a light and very moreish lemony risotto, which was absolutely heavenly. Coffee was taken on the comfy seats in the reception area, overlooking the gardens. A thoroughly relaxing time and at £20 for two courses, very good value. The staff were very attentive and pleasant. We've been visiting Rufflets for various occasions over the last 40 years and it never fails to deliver.

Afterwards we returned to the sofas to enjoy coffee and shortbread . Would definitely recommend this as a day out . Great location with tasteful decor .

On the first day of Spring, March 20th, 2018, my wife and I travelled to Rufflets Country House Hotel, just to the West of St Andrews. It was a glorious day and we wanted to see the refurbished restaurant, now branded as "Seasons." This is to reflect that the kitchen uses the very best of produce in season. Rufflets has made a considerable investment in enlarging the Kitchen Garden, putting raised beds and even pathways in to make it accessible to guests. First class! General Manager Stephen Owen says that for ten weeks in the middle of the Summer, the hotel will be able to be self sufficient on the vegetable front.

We had a private area for our celebration lunch which was rather nice as we did not feel we were disturbing the other guests. We had a long, leisurely lunch with no sense of anyone trying to rush us. My smoked salmon starter with capers and lemon curd sauce was delectable. The roast beef with Yorkshire Pudding and roast potatoes was perhaps one of the best bits of beef I have had in a long time! Succulent and tender and utterly flavoursome! We all had a really great time and enjoyed a fantastic lunch in beautiful surroundings and all delivered with friendly service.

Went for afternoon tea at Rufflets and we were immediately impressed by the entrance and lobby. It was all downhill from there. The staff weren't bad, but just didn't seem all that bothered that they had customers in. The waitress asked on at least 3 occasions about allergies, (once would have been enough) but disappeared with items not served and had to be searched for. The sandwiches were dry with small amounts of plain fillings. Cakes were not freshly made, which you would expect at £20 per head. The sausage roll was very mediocre. The fruit scone was excellent and fresh but the jam came in a small sealed jar, again not what you'd expect at this price. We occasionally have afternoon tea at a small tearoom in Central Scotland and for £10.99 we get afternoon tea for two! The quantity is slightly less, but the quality and presentation are much better at just over a quarter of the price ... and the staff are friendly, and efficient. This lovely hotel in a garden setting deserves better than this.

I was so disappointed with our visit here! I had heard such wonderful things about this place for many years and was delighted that we were going for afternoon tea to celebrate a friends birthday. There were a fair few of us but everything had been reserved months in advance, as part of our weekend away. The chap on the front desk was less than helpful, which was a little surprising, but hey, everybody had an off day. We were kept waiting for an uncomfortable amount of time, considering we had had this booked for ages, however we were, eventually, shown through to beautifully set table in a lovely dining room. The lady that served us was very efficient and discussed that it would be a waste for everyone to have their own afternoon tea so we should have 1 between two as they are generous portions, which was very good of her! She took orders for tea and coffee, and spoke with our gluten free friends about their requirements, all good so far! The hot drinks came and quickly became very cold as we waited, and waited for our food. We had to ask for a top up or renew pots of almost everyone's drinks. Eventually the stands arrived, although they did not seem as generously laden as we had been promised, but they did look tasty nonetheless. Unfortunately the scones were still raw in the middle so they were taken away and I thought it was treacle scones that were brought back a while later! They we revolting, I have baked for years and I have to say I have no idea what they had done to them to allow them to come out in that state!!!! They should never have left the kitchen! Our gluten free girls were sharing too but the kitchen obviously couldn't count as there wasn't enough for them to have one of each item, which was a shame. A bit disastrous to be honest however no fuss was made as the birth day girl had organised everything and we didn't want to make a fuss. Not sure I will be back here

We arrived on time for our Sunday lunch and were asked by Reception to take a seat in the lounge, which we did. This has been standard practice previously, so we didn't think anything of it. Minutes ticked by and we were effectively ignored. One couple appeared to be told to go straight to the Restaurant, where they were greeted and shown to their table. After 10 minutes we were asked if we had a reservation, which we did. We were finally given a menu but another 10 minutes elapsed before anyone came to take our order. Meanwhile a second couple and then another were directed straight to the restaurant and to their table. We were actually considering leaving as time ticked by and it was by now nearly 45 minutes since we'd arrived. We were finally shown to our table. The restaurant was busy, but not jam packed. The food was excellent, very good indeed. Just let down by the service. None of the staff apart from the manager managed a smile. I know that Sunday lunch is supposed to be leisurely, but this pushed things beyond that. The hotel itself is lovely, with comfy armchairs, spotlessly clean, nice festive decorations plus the gardens. Very relaxing but today the service was just plain slow.

Went for steak night but extremely disappointed. Asked for medium steak but was more rare.Few soggy chips, hard peas and two underdone soggy onion rings. No salad as advertsed. Food was also cold. Asked for a prosecco and was told had no cold ones . Was given small one off top shelf behind bar but when I opened it it was completely flat and very yellow so I think it must have been on the shelf a long while! Lady opened big bottle which again came from top shelf so was not cold but was bubbly. Can't believe there was no bottles in wine fridge. Sticky toffee pudding was good though. Seeing as there was just one other couple in the restaurant there really was no excuse for steak meal being so poor as kitchen not rushed. Won't be rushing back!!!

Great location on the Old Course. Beautiful modern terrace on the top floor with stunning views across the fairways to the sea. So wanted to like this place but were disappointed. Food was standard golfing fare - steaks and lobster - OK but nothing special . Wine list reasonable for price and choice. What lets the place down is the lack of management oversight. Tables with broken legs, jet lagged golfers asleep in the lobby, incredibly noisy ambience all overseen by a well meaning but overwhelmed serving staff. Not what you expect when paying $400 for a meal for two. Dinner took three and a half hours. We had to track down staff to order wine, coffee and get the check. Could be a good dining alternative to the Old Course Hotel but its let down badly by the service. Seems its owned by one of those absentee investment companies and it shows .

We had to wait around 10 minutes and received 4 types of sandwiches, a plain scone and fruit scone and a variety of cakes. The scones were some of the best I’ve ever had- warm from the oven, the cakes were light. We received a bottle of water and large pot of tea but had to ask for glasses. Arranged to meet friends here for a lunch and a catch up. This is a very popular visit with very pleasant surroundings through a very large conservatory contributing to a very well lit area. There are a number of tables within the conservatory and your extensive menu is on the table. There are hot and cold food choices ordered at the server and brought to your table. We opted for chicken and rice soup and tomato and vegetable soup. To accompany the soup we ordered cheese and onion toasties and cheese and ham. We had carrot cake put aside for later that was the last of it. The chicken soup had a distinct homemade stock flavour with generous amounts of chicken through the rice and veg. The toasties came with crisps and side salad and coleslaw on the side. They were very well cooked with a generous filling. Finally the piece de resistance the home baking carrot cake came bursting with flavour very moist and topped with a very sweet icing. Would not hesitate to recommend to anyone and will definitely be back.
