The Temperance Movement in Calderdale

Visited for Sunday breakfast and the poached eggs on avocado sourdough was excellent. Eggs were poached to perfection (compliments to the chef). My hubby had the vegetarian breakfast which was also fab. Lovely friendly staff.

Friendly venue with a good brunch menu, sourdough sandwiches and pastries. Nice setting in the historic market building.

Fantastic breakfast, lovely coffee and excellent staff. Can’t recommend highly enough! The rolled oats and home made jam were delicious.

Three of us went here for lunch. There's a new menu and we all had a different grilled cheese sandwich - one Spanish, one Korean and one Masala. All excellent and included perfect chips and dips. We would definitely recommend. Thank you!

Superb lunch for 2 in this really rather excellent cafe/resaurant. My sandwiches with a £3 "small" bowl of soup on the side were just packed with flavours - yum! Plenty of seating upstairs and downstairs, (toilets are downstairs), very friendly and efficient staff, imaginative decor and a range of speciality ground coffees and more to buy and enjoy at home. Located in Halifax's Market Street covered arcade, this is a good choice for coffee, lunch, etc, and good value too. Loved it!

Thought I'd have a little treat today of pancakes. Wish I hadn't bothered!!!! Ordered a latte and asked for fluffy pancakes at the cost of £11. 80!!!! My latte was delivered around 10 mins later, Luke warm and by the time my pancakes arrived 30 mins later, was cold!! No sugar on the table and when I asked a waitress who appeared another 10 mins later (I was seated upstairs with a few bags so didn't wish to go downstairs again) she pointed across the room to where the sugar was. What I received... 30 minutes later..... looked like a chocolate cake swimming in fruit juice which made the pancakes soggy along with tinned fruit. The chocolate "ganache" coated the top pancake and the sides and Obliterated the taste of everything I tried to eat. I took the plate back down and told the young waitress it was too sickly and nit good. She just replied OK! Service and food not good. Will not return!

Absolutely wonderful food! Had the vegan breakfast which was the best ever and my husband had a lovely vegetarian dish, moroccan I think. We liked the decor and ambience too

Read the reviews thought it’d be a nice place coffee with Dad. Coffee was really nice but the veggie breakfast although good items wasn’t as nice as it looked. Snotty eggs & salt added to the meal without asking customers is a no no. Don’t think it was worth £12.

There is a huge amount of irony that I found this particular cafe in Halifax... one of my issues with the town was the lack of venues to cater for people who are not interested in imbibing alcohol... I had decided to go out early to find a charming cafe to have breakfast in and I was finding it difficult. The ONLY reason I found this one is because I found the building attractive and I was taking photos. I did laugh out loud when I saw the name of the cafe and knew that it had to be part of my experience! Staff inside were lovely and welcoming. Soon I found a corner spot downstairs and I was having toast and tea. The tea was luscious and exactly what I needed on such a brisk morning. The toast was good. The inside of this building is quite charming in a unique way and it has upstairs and downstairs seating. You will find it in an arcade which makes it a hidden gem. ❤️❤️❤️

Was greeted by friendly staff and ordered my food at the counter - the Temperance House Salad and a white hot chocolate to drink. All reasonably priced. The place itself has a relaxed atmosphere, just what's needed to escape the bustle of the town centre. The food when it arrived was incredible - a large portion of green leaves, potatoes, mixed seeds and green beans with smoked salmon mixed together, topped with a boiled egg, all drizzled with lemon and dill dressing (but not overdone!) plus warm flatbread on the side (V/Ve options are available too). It was delicious! The white hot chocolate was also THE nicest I've ever had - not the usual watery rubbish you'd get elsewhere, but actually tasted like liquid chocolate - without a ton of sugar! Overall a great experience, well worth a visit.

Love visiting The Temperance when ever I am in Halifax. The staff are fabulous, the food amazing. I had the house salad which was delicious. I have never had a bad meal here, would definitely recommend. 😊👍🏻

Excellent food, beautifully prepared and presented. I had one of the day’s specials: avocado on sourdough with perfectly poached eggs, chutney and green salad. Coffee was great too. Friendly , efficient service. This was my second visit and I would go anywhere else in Halifax. ☺️

Popped in for a coffee and a cake and was not disappointed pointed. The most authentic “cortado” I’ve had outside of Spain and the espresso chaser was also excellent. Very pleasant surroundings and great service.

Very limited menu but is still very nice the coffee was luke warm bit dissapointing no seating area available as it was very busy unable to sit on tall buffets will not be visiting again

Love it here! It’s always absolutely spot on. Come here for breakfast with friends or sometimes treat myself to a brunch. The food is lovely fresh produce and it does the best coffee in town, no contest! Staff are always nice and polite too 😊

Went for a spot of brunch and was told it would be a 20 minute wait, however the food came in 10 minutes. As practicing vegetarians this is a great place for vegetarian options. Food was tasty, the drinks were hot. Would definitely visit again....

Temperance is a lovely cafe on the edge of the borough market. Staff are friendly and efficient and were quick in rectifying some minor questions. Food was very tasty with fresh, natural ingredients.

Had a very good breakfast - The cowboy beans and sourdough toast set me up for the day. Scrambled egg and smoked salmon was equally good. Very friendly and helpful staff.

Brilliant place. Amazing vegan options both savoury and sweet. Couldn’t be more accommodating for my celiac friend who needed gluten free. I’ll be going back for some vegan pastry as I missed out this time!

The vegan options were really good here, I enjoyed the vegan jalapeño cheese toasties, chai latte and carrot cake, reasonably priced, pleasant staff, will be back!
