The Tamarind Thai Restaurant in Norwich

Well. Before Covid this restaurant was the absolute bees knees, best Thai food this side of Khao Lak..... went a bit down hill after. BUT we thought we would give it a go after reading it had been taken over..... so went up to Norwich for the day purely for this reason, went in , stood by the desk for 10 mins..no one appeared..... then walked out, and ate somewhere else.

If I could rate it higher I would. The massages are the best I have had in this country, I love the authentic tasty food. The package deals are great, full body, followed by foot massage, then food in the restaurant - a lovely birthday treat- or any special occasion, or even just a treat for yourself 👌

Not particularly clean on entrance and toilets not very hygienic. Food was bland and tasteless and certainly didn’t bear any resemblance to the description on the menu. Probably the worst Thai food I’ve ever had. Rice was disgusting lump of glue in a bowl. Never again.

Excellent authentic Thai food. Customer service is also always excellent. Their set menu is such good value for money. Best Thai food in Norwich. Thank you so much 😊

I have never been so disappointed in a food delivery ever. Having spent over thirty pounds for a meal for my wife and I. We eat out or in a lot, our preference being Thai. When the meal was delivered I was dismayed to open the starter of breaded chicken wings which came in a tin container, no salad , nothing and deep fried which you expect. But not to the point you can't eat them. Pad Thai prawn. Just noodles, three prawns and soy sauce. No seaseme seeds nothing. And the same with the crispy duck. Just overkilled duck with soy sauce. No spring onions, greens nothing. Again for thirty plus pounds don't waste your time nor money. Will certainly be spreading the word where not to go.

we stumbled on the tamarind whilst visiting and we very happy we did, really lovely food, we sat outside and will visit if we return.

Called in for an early dinner, every thing was OK and just that. May be its more popular lunch times. There was nothing outstanding about the food. I would not make a special trip for this venue .

Saturday lunch menu, smaller portions but smaller price. Lovely simply cooked food, great choice. Sauces home cooked. Great desert choices, unusual for an Asian restaurant.

We travelled especially to Norwich (from London) to visit this place. Really wish we hadn't. We wanted to to come back to this restaurant for the steamed seabass with pineapple which we’d had the pleasure of experiencing in July when we stumbled across this restaurant. In July it was exceptional. After taking the order - the woman came back and advised that they had sold out of the steamed seabass but can offer deep fried seabass instead. Instead, we swapped for King Prawns in Tamarind Sauce. Starters were excellent as expected - satay chicken and fish cakes. Next came the prawns (4 in total). Deep fried, shell on, in batter, butterfly cut. On opening up the prawns, we noticed the poop shoot had not been cleaned and was intact. Discretely, we called the waiter over and explained the situation - he went into the kitchen and shown the chef the “dirty prawns” as he put it to us. The waiter talked to the manager and came over with a menu for something else instead - however we said no thanks and we'll just get the bill please. The bill arrived - and the waiter explained how he’d taken 25% off the bill for inconvenience but did not remove the cost of the prawn dish. This was rather gracious especially as they were running a 25% off all ala carte food items at the same time. In other words, they did nothing to rectify the poop shoot. I asked for the prawns to be removed from the bill as we’d not eaten them and as the restaurant had failed in their duty of care. The manager had different ideas! She told us, we didn’t complain about the poop shoot immediately when the food arrived and therefore it was our fault and she wouldn’t give us the refund for the offending dish. Ironically, I’d love to know how we can identify the poop shoot of prawns, battered, with shells on, in a tamarind sauce until we’d broken through the shell and attempted to remove the prawns from the shells. The manager eventually agreed to remove the item, from the bill - but not give any discount that every other customer was receiving and entitled to if they ordered ala carte (as we had). I insisted on receiving the discount - eventually the manager put £1.65 discount on bill and aggressive growled “next time, tell me before you start to eat any food if there’s a problem”. I requested the rest of the entitled discount be applied. Eventually she corrected the bill and screamed at me, shouting “I hope you never come back again and you will never be welcome back”. At which point she walked away in a temper. This restaurant has the ability to be something special but this manager with her abrupt and aggressive attitude to the customer ensures this place will never be a success unfortunately. This manager verbally shouted abuse at my partner and I in the restaurant in front of other guests - at which point I offered to call the point to intervene. We appreciate that there are some places in London where you pay to be abused by waiting staff for comic effect - but if we wanted that, we would have caught a tube to china town from our house and not driven 100 miles to eat here. We travelled over 100 miles specifically for this restaurant, after experiencing a truly wonderful meal in July after lockdown. We will never come back - I would encourage anyone to boycott this establishment until they remove this manager from her post.

Best Green thai curry I’ve tasted!! Excellent! We ordered takeaway, slight reduction in price and it was ready to collect within 10mins. Just visiting the city, so hopefully we will be back one day 🤞🤞🤞

Although the food was good the service was absolutely awful , we waited 20 mins for a our wto be cleared I realise these are unprecedented times but there was two staff and only two tables to service in-fact one waiter was cleaning cutlery in stead of serving , and when we complained was offered no discount or apology I would not go again even the other table was complaining about service

Another eat out to help out treat. Okay, so this our 2nd in 3 days. Just doing our best! Truth is that this was my peace offering for working late. Table for 2 at 8pm on a glorious summer evening. The restaurant was heaving in a socially distanced way. We played safe with a set option. We were not disappointed. The staff were run off their feet but did their best to keep all tables happy. Unsurprisingly, service was slow but seemed not to bother anyone. We left at 10.15 trying to agree on our favourite dish. We couldn’t! For me is was the crispy beef!

I love my Thai food but I’m so used to going to where I’m familiar but I’m dissapointed in myself for not finding this place earlier Best Thai food in Norwich! Absolutely delicious We went during ‘eat out to help out’ and they were full and it was a long wait for food, about 1hr but I’ll just hope that isn’t the norm and will try it on a normal day too as it’s not normally so full in there. If you like Thai food you’ll love this food

I walk past here nearly everyday but had never got around to trying it out, finally decided to give it a go with the 'Eat Out to Help Out' deal. We booked earlier in the day, for early evening, and glad we did, as by 7:30 people were being turned away. We had a couple of appetisers, followed by mains with sides of rice and prawn crackers. All the food was great and came out in good time, piping hot. The staff were a little rushed, and could have done with an extra person, you could tell they weren't quite ready for how busy the new Mon - Wed deal was going to make them. However they were all really nice and outside table service was fine. We will definitely come back regardless of any deals in the future.

Just across the road from John Lewis. Very handy. Their lunch menu has all the dishes you could hope for and more. The prices were cheaper than the dinner menu but we suspected the meals would be smaller as it was lunchtime and it was a smaller plateful but perfect for us. Our suspicions meant that we were happy to order starters which we don't normally have which again were delicious. The combination of starter and main were just right for our appetites. Chicken Satay, Vegetable Tempura and Pa Neang Chicken Curry - yum!. The only reason why there are not five 'blobs' are because of the price of the drinks. A normal size diet coke was £2.45, the small Tiger beer was £3.95. However, next time we're in Norwich we'll definitely go back

What a lovely restaurant staff are really friendly and the place is very clean. Service is prompt and food is out of this world would definitely recommend here and I will be going back x

Esta será una revisión muy corta porque hay poco que decir aparte de que toda la comida que se sirve fue excelente. . . y soy un marcador muy duro que rara vez obtengo una puntuación alta.Cada plato tenía un delicioso sabor distinto y merecía una puntuación alta por derecho propio.Posiblemente no sea el tailandés más barato en alrededor de 120 para la comida fija pero vale la pena. Todos estuvimos de acuerdo en que fue una excelente experiencia.Todo lo que diría es ir!

Friendly welcome, good food, keenly priced, spotless restaurant & facilities. Food well presented. Chicken satay appetiser very tasty. Sweet and sour chicken tangy with a good size portion. Coconut rice was good but sticky rice too tough. They replaced straight away with jasmine rice.

Visited here with two other friends making four of us on a Saturday night. We decided to have the set course for 4 persons. We had more than enough in fact very little room on the table to eat the food. The staff were very polite and helpful.Also the restaurant was quiet which made it a very nice change from not hearing everyone else's voices.So all I all the price was very good including a bottle of wine just under £140.Definitely would return.

Just walked in after matinee at theatre. We love Thai food and this was good, better than good, ate far too much ! Any comments made about watery are unfounded as Thai food is runny! That’s how it is. This was tasty and well spiced. (We had Massaman and Penang with coconut rice) Next time we’re in Norwich this will be our meal choice. Good service too.

I’ve visited a lot of Thai restaurants in Norwich but this is certainly the best. Friendly staff, nice atmosphere and excellent food. Particular highlights were tamarind duck and the king prawn panang curry. All the food was excellent though, and the portions were really generous. We’ll definitely be coming back.

I was then going to leave a review about the food that myself and 4 friends had the same night as the people who left the last review .We also had the green curry that night .I never leave reviews as a rule .The green curry we had on the same night i would have to say it was one of the best currys ive had . And i have tryed near on every thai restaurant in the city of norwich and i would say that im a good judge . I have never had a bad meal here . If i was to have a guess the people which left this review below are the sort of people who just loves to moan and get there bill amended . Sorry to keep going on about these people but the food was lovely as it is everytime .I feel as if the review they left was very dishonest and very unfair , When the couple left they even short changed the bill by £10. .Hopefull the restaurant will ban these people for life .. john

The starters were OK, but nothing to write home about. The Green Curry, which both my wife and myself had, was watery, full of mainly hard green beans, crenulated carrots, insipid chicken and looked like it was an English Sunday dinner with leftover veg, scraped into dishwater and served up Monday as a Thai dish - it was truly awful and this is from a man married to an Asian lady who has spent a large part of his life working in the Far East and we're both serious foodies. It was also expensive for what it was. Very upset, especially since the waitress tried to defend the quality, rather than appreciating it was unacceptable and onpassing our viewpoint to the 'chef'...

We had a quick lunch at this restaurant. They were able to accommodate my dish coming first as I had to return to work and the rest of my family took their time. Food did come quickly as they were not busy on a Monday lunchtime. We had the lunch menu. The curry my husband had was ok but the rice was like half a bowl!

Popped in yesterday lunch time for the special. Had my usual chicken satay and ginger chicken. It really was delicious and such good value for money. Have been several times and its always good. Service is always good too.

We didn’t know this restaurant and just dropped in after the cinema. The food was wonderful and reasonably priced. Service good.

Staff Always very accommodating, very friendly and happy to oblige customers. The coffee was delicious,but could have been a bit hotter. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed two courses which were very well cooked, presented and served. Will return again soon.

Excellent service, speed of service was perfect, I ate alone, as was made to feel welcome. I watched then handle a rather difficult table of 4 well, ensuring they were regularly checked upon as was happy. My main dish Thai Spicy Noodle with Beef was lovely. Fairly priced too. The decor was appropriately designed. Nice restaurant temperature. I will definitely return. Lovely place!!

we were in Norwich doing the usual "Xmas Present" return/swap because of wrong size, colour in the shops. We had booked a table just in case it was busy, turned up on time and taken to the table, given menus and drinks orders taken, was a bit of a delay before food started to arrive but it was worth the wait- four stunning plates of food, well cooked, presented and the taste was wonderful- four happy diners, we wil be back for sure.

Although quite busy, we still managed to get a table for four. Service was excellent throughout. Having had a lunch time menu we thought the evening meal would be of a similar size and we ordered starters. To be honest they were not needed as the mains were larger portions. My wife is a coeliac and allergic to chilli, but this wasn’t a problem and she had a very tasty starter and main. Would recommend this restaurant for lunch and evening meals.

Came here with a good friend. We decided on the st menu for two and we were not disappointed. The starters were well presented and very tasty. Main course was just as good. The beef was amazing as was the sweet and sour pork and green thia chicken. Vegetable dish and rice were great. Plenty of food and all was of great standard. You even get a battered banana and ice cream just to top everything off. I thought the service was excellent as was the price. I will definitely be going again and would highly recommend it. Friendly, tasty and well worth a visit.

Recently hired this venue for a major event for around 200 people and they were brilliant. They helped provide a suitable buffet style lunch over 2 sittings for a very reasonable price without reducing quality. They were very accommodating for members of our group that had various requirements and the staff were awesome. I have visited this place when its only a couple of us but to cater for around 200 in one lunchtime was great. We obviously planned it in advance and they were proactive in providing various options in the planning. Highly recommend this place for any size of party for lunch or dinner. Thanks guys our company had a great time with you!

With no booking, parked in John Lewis car park and walked through shop and restaurant is opposite. 5 family members were easily seated and other people were coming and going throughout our stay. Friendly waitresses throughout. The two course meal was excellent and flavoursome. The cold green milk tea was lovely and refreshing. In all a great meal and would fully recommend with great value for money.

My husband and I visited here recently as I love Thai food.

Randomly walking around and fell on this place a number of years ago on a snowy, icy evening when the area was in the middle of being developed, and done exactly the same this evening- had a quick check to trip advisor, to make sure still good reviews...... and it was!!! Very glad we went in! Warm welcome, good food and didn’t break the bank- set meal for two, three courses and coffee- with two large bottles of sparkling water under £60. Already looking forward to stumbling on the place a 3rd time.....

Visited last night. Waited about 20 mins to have a drinks order taken. Draught pumps not working. Had large bottles of Tiger beer x2 per person. Watch out they cost £7.50 each !! A rip off.

Found the Tamarind whilst walking around looking for somewhere for dinner with friends and we were seated immediately. The waiters were lovely and very helpful. The food is absolutely amazing (I would recommend the Hot and sour soup especially). Very very tasty. Would definitely go back.

The restaurant looks nice from the outside so I went by for the lunch menu. We were quick to get seated, but the rest of the service was slow, the drinks and food took a while to arrive.

Called in for lunch last Thursday with my daughter after it had been recommended to me by a work colleague. Greeted straight away and sat in a booth in the centre of the restaurant. Very attentive staff but not in a hurrying way. Had two starters of tempura veg and satay chicken to share (lovely and light and tasty) followed by a red curry and a king prawn pad thai. Beautifully fresh and served almost too steaming hot to eat! Delicious food, excellent service and reasonably priced. Looking forward to my next visit.

This is my favourite restaurant in Norwich. The food is so tasty and above all healthy and light. Fresh ingredients and superb flavours. My favourite is the green Thai curry and also the pad Thai AND the dumplings. The noodle soup is great as well, especially if I want to pick up a take away at lunchtime.

Perfect meal and this time they had a choice of two draft lagers; Tiger and Heineken. The meal was perfect. We shared 3 dishes to start with; the spicy Thai fish cakes, the chicken satay and an assortment of vegetable fritters.

Enjoyable lunch with excellent food at very reasonable prices, good service, although alcohol was rather expensive.

Food was very good and a large choice. Prices reasonable and staff very pleasant. Nice wine also reasonable and very relaxed atmosphere. Would certainly recommend.

Popped in for a lunchtime break. We each had: Thai Dumplings and Som Tam salad for starters with Tom Yum soup and Massaman Curry as a main. The Massaman was fine, however everything else was rather mediocre. Vegetables used were not authentic.Service was friendly if a little erratic (new staff?). Maybe they're not really focused on he daytime service, rather empty for a city centre location. Paid just shy of £40 for the privilege of this lunch. Next time we will try another Thai restaurant.

Comfortable atmosphere with soft traditional Thai music and authentic decor, and then there's the food. Genuine Thai menu, superbly cooked and presented and not over expensive. My only disappointment was that there was no draft beer, but the wine was good and the 'Weeping Tiger' and 'Crispy Pork Belly' were mouthwatering. A mixed shared Thai starter was also delicious: with spring rolls, fishcakes and chicken satay. Efficient and charming service: we will definitely be back!

I like Thai food occasionally and enjoy the mixed spices and textures the dishes provide. The menu caters to a range of demands from a group of friends and family and the service was good at meeting our needs.

First time here and the food was excellent. Mixed starter to start was very tasty, then the pad thai and green curry didn’t disappoint. Friendly efficient service. It’s a shame the restaurant was almost empty as the food was delicious. Quite good value too. Will definitely go back.

Without going back to Bangkok, this food simply transforms us back to the best holiday we have ever had. All fresh, the food is amazing. 2 courses £9.95, 1 course £5.95. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough.

We had a very pleasant evening yesterday at the Tamarind Thai restaurant.

We love it here! With numerous visits under our belts, this restaurant has always provided great quality service, the tastiest of foods using finest fresh ingredients, and all at a very competitive price.

I grabbed myself a take-away from here after a long day at work and not wanting to cook. Turned out to be a great choice - it was ready in a few minutes and tasted fantastic. Will definitely be back!

We went for lunch a couple of weeks ago and they food was amazing! Recommend the chicken Satay very moist and delicious, we had all 3 courses for £12.95 each all very tasty. Took both my young boys + they both enjoyed the noodles!! The service was very good also. Would totally recommend this place to anyone who enjoys authentic Thai food.

Nice bright restaurant with attentive and very experienced staff. Most of the food was very good but my crispy duck was too salty.

I booked early for a family get together and I'm pleased to say it didn't disappoint. I had read the TripAdvisor reviews and found they were mostly excellent. We are all Thai food lovers and keen to get started. We ordered drinks, prawn crackers and 2 starters to share between the four of us while we decided on the main courses. It was quite adequate. We each ordered different main courses, together with 1 rice, 1 noodle and 3 vegetable dishes to share. This again was most adequate. The plates and food was piping hot. The waitress was polite and attentive. Our only criticism was that the restaurant was a little on the cool side. Everywhere was clean throughout the restaurant and so too were the toilets upstairs. Would recommend and will go back.

Went here as it was part of the American Express promotion of small businesses but the card was refused as “the machine is not working” . This is unacceptable. Funny how Amex cards work in other machines but not here. My guest had to use their card and it was embarrassing. Will not be returning although the green curry was O.K for the price.

Not the usual warm welcome that is experienced in other Thai restaurants, the overall service was efficient (but surly ) and felt like it was being done by the book. The food was OK but not outstanding. There are several other Thai restaurants close to this one and they are all better. We will not be going back.

Although the Tum Yam soup was very nice, the main courses were all ok, and not that special as we had expected. For a Saturday evening the restaurant was not very well attended. A reasonable night out, nothing special.

Our Family booked here for supper after the John Lewis Customer evening last night as this restaurant is located just across the road from the store. Having read some good reviews on this site as well as from the Norfolk Magazine, we were looking forward to our meal here. Firstly I should say that there was absolutely nothing wrong with the food, all very well cooked and presented but it was the total lack of atmosphere and very few other diners that ruined the experience for us. Considering there were only a couple of tables in, the service was poor, they forgot to bring my second requested drink, took ages to bring the bill and just did not seem interested, no marks for Customer Service here....!!!!???? Even worse to go to the loo you have to climb up a spiral staircase and walk through a wide open space with half unpacked cardboard boxes and mess all over the place. The loos were in desperate need of refurbishment and the whole place looks like it could do with a facelift.

Having read the reviews we thought we were in for a great Thai meal. It turned out to be the worst we have ever had by a very long way. Bland, tasteless, no colour, no flavour and just thrown into a plate.

This is a fantastic place to eat, Thai food lovely you also get plenty never have we come away hungry! Staff polite and service always great. Love the specials and the tempura is amazing my fav is the sweet and sour chicken fresh flavours and the chicken has a lovely coating. Highly recommend lunch 9.95 deal for two courses lots to choose from.

We ate here for the first time on Saturday evening. We were not disappointed by the food, which was authentic Thai; fragrant and multi-flavoured. One waitress was a bit frosty, otherwise the service was good. We will return!

My friends and I ate here the other night and it was a lovely meal. In particular the house special dishes of stir fried duck and stir fried pork belly were my personal favourites. Everyone loved their meals but I would say they were not quite as exquisite as my old favourite Lam Thai or Thailand Restaurant in Thorpe. Service started off very attentive but as the night went on it was difficult to get staff's attention as they were very busy serving other customers.

We fancied something flavoursome, exotic and fresh and the Tamarind Tree delivered. Good friendly service - We had some jasmine tea for 2 a massive pot for £4.50 plus they topped it up with water. But they also do an amazing array of fresh smoothies and juices so we had one of them too £2.60.

The food was good and the service excellent. The seating was comfortable. The atmosphere was a bit ordinary but pleasant enough. There were several vegetarian options but we would have liked to see a few more.

We started with steamed thai dumpling and squid tempura both of which were delicious. Following on we ordered crispy duck served on a bed of stir-fried spring greens with homemade tamarind sauce, stir fried chicken with cashew nuts and pad thai. The service was very good and the meal was excellent value. We will definitely be back!

Went to this restaurant for the first time recently with a group of 6. Because we all like to nibble we ordered the set menus and just shared it all. Every bit of it was well cooked, well flavoured and delicious. And there was masses of it!

I had the opportunity to visit this restaurant with a work colleague; it had been recommended to us as neither had been before. We had tempori vegetables and chicken satay for starters and both had Pad Thai for main course. The food was excellent and the service exemplary. I can thoroughly recommend this excellent restaurant as one of the best Thai restaurants I have been to outside Thailand.

a friend and i met for lunch and someone suggested thai and said they had just noticed the tamarind tree so off we went, theres always something about some thais the immediate calm which i find lovely and the food was really good i love tempura prawns which were top class followed by green prawn curry no room for anything else i left calm cool and forfilled

Never had a proper Thai meal before and loved every bite. We had a selection of starters and I can recommend the sweetcorn cakes, very yummy, and I can't remember what they were called but basically a pork ball wrapped in a filo type pastry.

Had the 3 courses for £12 was delicious! Pork skewers for starter, ginger beef and banana fritters. Be back again next week.

Walked in just before 6pm for a table for just for me! The lady was lovely, really helpful in helping me make my menu choice. Food arrived swiftly, tasted great and would happily come back with friends (although felt very comfortable/welcome as a lone diner)

After being to thailand earlier this year I can say that the food here is authentic. The red curry brought back fond memories of my holiday. If I am in the area for work again I will definitely make a stop here.

Recently discovered this place, have been twice for lunch in the past week and this is now my favourite Thai in the city. It was beautifully presented and delicious. Very good value at lunch time and the staff were lovely.

Recently went with family, myself and youngest son can't handle really spicy food, Lady advised on red thai curry and phanang curry, both were fabulous! Green thai curry was more spicy but that suited hubby and oldest son. Highly recommend

Nice food , not too spicy but generally good flavour it never seams terribly busy but is average value for money. Opposite John Lewis.

Had an excellent meal here with a friend after a day of walking around Norwich. The food is high quality, notably the hot and sour soup, which was unlike any other I've had in terms of freshness and flavour. The staff were very friendly and the atmosphere was cosy. Prices are a little on the higher side of the scale, but you definitely get what you pay for.

Do not be put off by all the silly road works outside, went today with my mum and daughter for lunch. Absolutely loved it! I had duck and chicken pad Thai, both delicious and mum had red Thai curry with rice. Reasonable prices excellent food. Really good service and very friendly staff! Very modern inside. They did have cocktail offers on too (but we passed as it was only lunchtime!)

Really good tasty food, nicely presented and piping hot. We had Set Menu A. Every single thing was excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Service was very good too.

Great location. Welcoming Staff. Menu a bit restrictive. The portion sizes are very small . Well presented . Restuarant clean and modern . Sadly my friend became ill during the meal, I was ill later. Over use of chilli . Dissappointing. Great smoothie.

This was our first visit and we were very impressed. The food was lovely and the service was quick. We had the sharing platter to start, which was tasty and ample for 2. I had the sweet and sour for main and my husband had stir fry garlic chilli beef; we shared a rice. The whole meal was delicious. The service was good and speedy. We also liked the atmosphere of the restaurant, it seemed quite relaxed.

It wasn't the most flavoursome, aromatic, authentic Thai food I have ever eaten. However it was fresh, fast, piping hot and well cooked.

Excellent value lunches allow the diner a good and realistic choice. The restaurant is very conveniently placed and it has a good atmosphere. Service is sometimes a bit slow but attentive nonetheless.

Thai food is one of our favorites and often in the U.K. Thai restaurants do not have that authentic taste. This place does, the dishes are full of flavour and they also have the right level of spice, not dumbed-down. We took our teenage sons and they very much enjoyed it too. The service was excellent from attentive staff.

What a lovely restaurant with great food ! Quick service food nice and hot upon arrival a bit pricey but I find it's the case with Thai food we all loved it and will visit again !
