Food and service in the restaurant was great. Staff were lovely. The pub next door was quiet . We just had one drink. The table was sticky. The chairs needed to be wiped down , and there was a plate on the table next to us that was not cleared away for the hour that we stayed. Not the best impression for visitors.

It is a small pub with traditional Scottish food. It took a while to get our food but the service was nice and the food was delicious! Probably the best in the small town of Ayr. I had the Sunday Roast and my husband had the fish and chips. We ended our meal with their apple pie and vanilla ice cream which was so amazing, I forgot to take a picture of it!

Visited by chance and had a wonderful meal and great service provided by the 2 ladies serving . Chicken tempura and pea and ham soup for starters was absolutely brilliant. My son had a burger and chips and he’s a rater of burgers , best one previously being eaten in York . But not now , there is a new best burger champion right here in Ayrshire at tam o Shanters . The Scottish tapas we had the steak pie , haggis neeps & tatties and mince & tatties . It is one of the nicest foods I have had at any restaurant . We will most definitely be back to try other menu items .

So, after spending years and a lot of money in the tam o shanter, here is where we are The have the goil to put a please pay cash as they are a small business, dont pay card crap....fir every £10 they take on card, the charge to them is 20p!! Yes!!! In this day of covid and transferring money, they have the face to ask you please pay cash!! As if the are heavily penalised!!! Again, for your info, if you pay with card, every £10 ypu pay, they lose 10p....desperation or greed?? You make the judgement Now! You cant get the light lunch on the weekends!!! Forcing you to take the full price meal!! I have seen desparation in my visits to all pubs, but to deny public a light lunch, is greed, total greed Shame on you David Greed is a terrible affliction

Couldn’t agree more with a previous post about the blonde female behind the bar being ‘hostile’. I’ve come across her working in other establishments over the years where she has been unfriendly but on my recent visit she has down right rude. It baffles me that such an individual has survived as long in the hospitality industry as she is less than hospitable. It’s a real pity as it’s a lovely pub with great character.

Visited today for lunch. An ordinary, traditional Scottish bar and restaurant serving lovely home cooked fayre. Fantastic value for money and honest, friendly service. I asked for a small portion of soup without bread which was no problem. Soup was home made and delicious. Lunch like granny made, small starter, two substantial and tasty main courses with fresh veg and two glasses of very nice Chilean Rose wine, a soft drink and a tea all for £25. Don't expect Michelin style food but if you need a good nourishing meal, friendly service on a budget, this place is 10 out of 10.

My friend and I wanted a light snack so we went in and ordered the Goujons and a lentil soup. The goujons were cooked from frozen and over fried, dry and accompanied with a ‘salad’ that looked like a rabbit had already attempted and left in the corner of its hutch because it was so old. The soup was bland and tasteless, I had to add so much pepper and salt that there was no other taste. The ‘chef’ also managed to burn the frozen roll. There was no care or craft about anything that was served to us and I’m glad we just ordered a snack. If it were my ‘restaurant’ I would sack the cook immediately. Just awful. Neither of us could finish anything we ordered.

Recently visited the Restaurant with a reserved party of a around ten. After deliberation everyone duly ordered, prior to that we was informed there was no Cullen Skink soup or Curry available, the place had only been open for approximately an hour and half maximum (thought that's a good start). There was more to come the waitress came back twice to confirm what was actually ordered on the starters. On arrival guess what they still couldn't get it correct.I was left wanting the Pate, when it arrived 5 to 10 mins later it looked all cobbled together with no where near as much Pate as the previous plates had come with, suspicously looking like they was running out of Pate too.Admittedly had the Specials Menu personally as the overall choice was very challenging to find something inviting to eat I guess.Onward came the pasta bake which in my opinion which can only be loosely called just that.Pasta with a couple of minute pieces of broccoli and a couple of tiny tiny pieces of mushroom and poured over with watered down pasta sauce. Was looking forward to going to this establishment but came out very deflated indeed.Hence will not be going back.

poor disinterested service. no dogs in the bar. No food available from the bar. Restaurant food can't be served in the beer garden. Ordered J2O for my wife, didn't do them. Bought a pint of something that looked like it might be beer but tasted like fizzy vinegar - usually a sign that the cellar isn't kept at the right temperature. I poured it away on the grass, hope it survives. Overall a terrible place to drink and an impossible one to get food from, and an indictment of Ayr's general failure to cater for tourists, who would be better off staying away.

Went into the restaurant half for lunch, after seeing the high Trip Advisor rating in their window. Old fashioned tea room style, but not particularly quaint. Staff very friendly and efficient and gave us the WiFi code without any problem. My starter of haggis nachos was very tasty, lots of haggis on top of tortilla chips with cheese and a peppercorn sauce. Husband's chicken gougons just looked as if they were out a freezer bag. Chose fish and chips from the lite menu, small portion but big enough for me. Again, fish and chips were from the freezer without a lot of flavour. The Guiness steak pie (well, casserole with slice of puff pastry put on top) was tasty - beef well cooked in a rich gravy. Two soft drinks and the bill came to just over £27.

We just love this bar. Terrific atmosphere, Saturday afternoon has a really nice buzz. We have been making friends over the past 3-4 years getting to know the regulars. Every time we visit we usually dine in the bar, however as being a special occasion and steaks were on the menu,we decided to try out the restaurant side. First impressions were - was disappointed it looked more like a Tearoom than a restaurant, but looks aren't everything...We ordered rib eye (sirloins were not available that evening). They were the nicest steaks we have tasted for a long time and cooked to perfection (I couldn't have made them better at home and that's not easy for me to admit !)Disappointments were :- Customer Service*waitress annoyed because someone called at 16.30hrs enquiring what time they closed as he was looking for a table for 7. "5 ocloak" was the aburpt reply she gave with a stern eye to the young chap answering the call, ensuring it was clear she was not happy to accomodate this late booking request. No compromise even considered. Customer service went straight out the window for me at this point. Must have been a really heavy shift.(food served Saturday 2 pm- 5pm I may add). Staff Conduct- {this coversation took place at the kitchen area. I don't think they are aware the customers seated in that area can hear every word}**Same member of staff could be heard using foul langage when discussing the above phonecall scenario with the Chef and her assistant. Personal Hygiene-***Same waitress was seen twice coughing into her hands and then serve plates of food to customers without washing or sanitising them. Not wanting to finish on a low note, as these misdemeamors are repairable and will never stop us from returning. If you're ever passing through Ayr, pop in for a wee pint and/or light lunch or dinner. You won't be disappointed.**Compliments to all the bar staff and the Chefs. You are all very much appreciated x.

This is a quite upmarket pub and restaurant in the middle of Ayr situated in its busy High Street. It is comfortable in there and has not only a good and not too expensive menu, but it is nice to be inside with very good service. It is not expensive, and, if you are lucky, you can park right outside its front doors.

Staff are so welcoming and really want to help. Try the macaroni cheese and fillet steak and you have to have dessert.....

popped in here for a drink and lunch with my friend on a weekend break to Ayr and wish we hadn't bothered. We had a drink and looked at menu. Before ordering I popped to toilet ...... omg, what an absolute disgrace. To say this toilet needs a total refurbishment, not to mention a good clean is a huge understatement. Given the state of the toilet we had no hesitation in heading out the door without ordering food ....... enough said ....... never again.

After seeing the trip advisor certificate of excellence, we went in by. Really disappointing. My husband had haddock & I had Chicken balmoral. The chicken was very dry and sauce tasted like it was bought in. Haddock was awful, it was frozen (which was confirmed by staff afterwards). Also very pricey for what you got.

I have eaten here before and had a lovely meal. This time I'm afraid We were disappointed. No complaints about the staff they were fine. Unfortunately the food was at best average. I chose the burger. Really tasteless, 14 chips in a fancy basket, tiny salad. My wife had the lasagne, which tasted like mince with cheese over. Quite expensive too. Don't want to be completely negative, people near us seemed to be enjoying their meals..maybe we just chose the wrong thing. In summing up. Try it you may like it. Maybe I'm getting too fussy.

Traditional Scottish food, well prepared, reasonably priced, served by attentive staff. The restaurant is a bit pokey and cramped, but the food is well worth a visit. Sadly the berserk 'Elf n safety' means they can no longer allow you to buy the real ale in the next door linked pub, but there is a limited line of drinks. They coped with a child who didn't want the 'neeps' and his mother who needed to know the ingredients of everything. You must try their signature dish of Haggis, Neeps n Tatties, although all the dishes were appreciated and consumed with pleasure.

Ordered homemade steak pie, the pastry had never seen the filling untill it was coming to the table, tables so squashed together if you like us were in the corner and wanted out you had to get people from two different tables to move for you. A distinct nasty smell were we sat by the window with a lot of little flies around. Really disappointed as it looked nice from the outside the portion size was not great for what you paid.I personally would not recommend this to anyone so many other places to eat.

Having just arrived in town and hungry we set off on food to look for a bite to eat. We noticed the Tam O Shanter and walked in. The food was good and the atmosphere was really nice. Try the Steak Pies with a pint of Guiness.

Price seemed rather high for the food content, chips portion was small and the home made quarter pounder was rather slim. The place has 8tables only due to physical restrictions of space. Seems a welcoming place for a couple but would not recommend a large group. Had to pay separately for drinks and food?

Had an enjoyable meal here with the family. Food was very good quality but I felt the portions , particularly the starter were a bit on the small side. Not from the Ayr area but would visit again .

We wanted somewhere to have a quick, simple supper. Don't know the area but this place stood out in the street so gave it a go. The menu choice was good. Couple of us had Balmoral chicken and another had fish. Both dishes were enjoyable enough. The service and condition of the place was disappointing. Our waitress came across as fed up, a couple of the staff appeared to be drinking (maybe they were off duty or having soft drinks in a wine glass, either way it didn't present a great impression), the furnishings were tired and the toilet was not a nice place to visit! If you want decent pub grub with no frills then this restaurant fits the bill.

My family popped in here for a spot of lunch on a day out. Great service from staff, who were friendly and extremely helpful. They do great offers on food, including two courses for around £7. I had croustini (which, upon asking, was informed was garlic bread with tomatoes and cheese) and a roast beef dinner. The croustini was a tad bland, but I couldn't fault the roast dinner. Everything was piping hot, and the beef, well, that was just beautiful. All the members of our party (5 in total) had the beef and all were praising it. We had carrot cake for pudding also, and that was moist, fresh and beautiful also. Top notch!

The Tam O Shanter is split into 2 connecting buildings. A family friendly restaurant and a pub.Restaurant - If you are looking for some amazing Scottish Cuisine then look no further. The decor and the food highlight Scotland's culture and history with the theme of the Tam O'Shanter poem by Robert Burns. This is a small restaurant only open for Lunch or an early dinner, closing around 5pm (I think). Menu Items include; Haggis Neeps and Tatties (served gateaux style with a beautiful creamy whisky sauce), Fish n chips, mince n tatties as well as a selection of sandwiches etc. This restaurant won our personal "Best Sticky Toffee Pudding in Ayr" quest. We were in Ayr for a month and tried out a lot of restaurants!Pub - This pub is historical, quaint and very well kept. There is an amazing fireplace original to the building that is now converted to gas. On Wednesday nights they do an Open Mic night where you can be entertained with both modern and traditional music. The pub is over 18's only.

The hotel is very dingy but its extremely old so maybe thats why it hasnt been done up, must be the style their after. The bar staff were quite incompetent. One forgot to give me my change and then later on at night the other barman gave me the wrong can - twice. The breakfast was good and the woman (kirsty i think) was spot on.

The food here is great, the angel cut fish especially and the pizzas are good... But they really need to fix their ventilation. Every time for months I pickup food the atmosphere in the shop is very smokey and hard to breathe. Think what it must be like for the poor staff who work there day in day out? Can't be good for them!
