¡Me encantó!

Came here monday and tuesday this week. The pub is fantastic, its cosy, warm with a real fire and has very friendly staff. We came here as a family and played pool, watched the telly and ate free fruit loaf. It is a wonderful little pub in St Asaph and will be brilliant in the summer with it's vast beer garden out the back. Thanks for making out visit to north wales memorable

I didn't realise about Tripadvisor so this is one of my first reviews. Its over 12 months since I visited this place so things may be better. We visited here after 2 hours on the road and had a meal with chips and I ordered a side of chips just to be sure we got a good portion. The owner was very pleasant and good hospitality and the food arrive reasonably quickly. The one reviewer said " food came fairly fast but tasted of stale grease " . I would agree and this was the same in our case and believe that it was down to the way in which the chips had been cooked. They may have fried them but if the oil is not hot enough you get 'boiled chips' and hence coated with grease and limp! So what should have been a great lunch turn a bit soar. There was some mention of the cook recently left and her daughter now doing the cooking so I guess that the skill of 'crispy fried chips' had not been passed on to the daughter. In fact, if the chips had been baked in an oven (oven-ready-chips) they would have been better than the soggy lifeless chips we had. Small things do make or break a good lunch!

The pub is quite large and sprawling with reasonable choice of ales and wine. Food is OK but nothing startling although specials board usually has some good additions on it. Nothing spectacular but probably a favorite in St Aspaph.

Unable to sit in beer garden as weather overcast but next time weather permitting would take meal outdoors as garden lovely cared for and flowers etc . Will definately return as good standard and very reasonably priced .

We booked a table so were expected. Notices outside the pub proudly proclaim their number one status on Trip Advisor and the varied, fresh, locally sourced menu. The place was empty when we arrived, to the smell of disinfectant and the blaring of a large television. Only one of our party was able to have the meal they ordered as it turned out that there were several things not available from the menu. The food quality was average. For example the rice for the beef stroganoff was barely cooked and in clumps. The beef burger tasted as if it had come from the local freeezer shop. The service was polite but perfunctory and there was no welcome from the manager at all. There was no atmosphere in the place; it felt like a sad waiting room and we ate our meal to the background of television noise, when muted music would have been more appropriate. From this disappointing experience and from reading the other reviews, it seems that this place has gone downhill rapidly and the owners are just going through the motions until they sell.

quick service and food came fairly fast but tasted of stale grease .the worse part was the electric ran out and we had to wait for the landlord to get the electric key and go to post office to charge it up. I have never seen a business run like this before .I suppose for a little pub it is ok but only for a quick bar meal.someone said they have a new cook there now so it may be better.

Myself and my family visited this restaurant a few Fridays ago after seeing the recommendations on here.. Absolutely stunned by the food! A young girl served us out drinks and explained that she would be cooking our meals. My wife and I were a little dubious as we weren't sure how such a young women would be able to cope with cooking the supposed fresh food for all 5 of us. However the result of her cooking was fantastic and I was shocked at how professional it all seemed she was able to send out our sons meal before we had starters as requested and even came out to talk to us after our meal. We had 3 steaks among other meals and they were cooked to perfection, we also had fish and chips which was beautifully cooked. Most definitely impressed us and we will most certainly be visiting again!

We found The Swan Inn on Trip Advisor. We were actually staying near Prestatyn, but thought we'd try somewhere new, even if it meant a drive out.In brief, the food was excellent. Extremely good quality, very tasty, and the home made chips were like my mum used to make years ago - amazing. We ordered, the gammon (good size), two rib-eye steaks (the steak melted in your mouth), a Swan burger (one of the best I've tasted, even after travelling to America a few times and eating many burger meals). Our toddler also had a bowl of chips, again lovely home made chips that he enjoyed eating because he finished them all !!!The staff were very attentive and helpful. We will definitely be visiting again. Many thanks...

We last visited some 9 months ago, and although I did not post a review at the time, it would easily have been 5 stars. However, our visit in May 2013 was just the opposite experience of that last wonderful time. What on earth has happened? On ordering drinks, there was no cider of any kind - not even the dreaded Magners, no Carling, no real ale, and no bottles of wine, just the small individual bottles and already opened full bottles. That did not augur well.My starter was crispy spring rolls, but whilst the outside was crispy, the filling inside was a complete mush with no taste whatsoever. My wife has potato skins which she deemed just OK.Main course was the beer battered fish and chips, but what a disaster. Fish was a cylindrical shape! I don't think I have ever seen fish that shape before. The batter was soft and not crispy as it should have been. Mushy peas were not mushy and had no taste. My wife said her ham was OK, but in both our cases the chips were peculiar in that they were long and thin (difficult to get large chipping potatoes at this time of year), and very dark as if the cooking oil hadn't been changed for some time.On to desserts, as we were both attracted to the spotted dick. Now what could go wrong with a nice steamed spotted dick? In this case absolutely everything was wrong. Few currants, and the bottom half was completely hard and inedible, plus it was burnt. How can you burn something that should be steamed? Horrible. It really is a shame that this place has gone downhill so rapidly. It just needs a little decent management, especially in the kitchen. Finally, come to think of it, last time we visited, there was no cider. Is it ever stocked?

I have visited The Swan quite a few times and the food is always as lovely as the welcome off John and Lisa. They can never do enough for you and always aim to please! I went to the Swan with work friends for my leaving party last Friday and had a superb night. We all ordered different meals and every single one of us cleared our plates. I love the home made chips especially! The service is quick but I never feel rushed or like they are trying to hurry me along. My friends and I were going to head to another pub for cocktails but we decided to stay as we were enjoying ourselves so much and because the music was pleasant and not too loud so we couldn't hear our conversation. Lisa made us a lovely cocktail and named it after me! (order The Hidden Gem - it's amazing!) All in all every visit has been brilliant. Stopped by at The Swan Inn for Sunday lunch on the strength of it being rated nu 1 in St Asaph on Trip advisor. We were not dissapointed. Had a lovely beef dinner. I'm a bit fussy with meat but i polished it all off with no difficulty!! It was lovely and tender. There was plenty of veg on the plate, pigs in blanket and yorkshire pudding. The dinner came with a jug of gravy which was a nice touch as I usually have to ask for more gravy when I go out for Sunday lunch. Friendly staff. Would recommend.

After having a lacklustre Sunday lunch here a few months ago (i.e. no fresh veggies- tinned/frozen!), we didn't think it would be worth going back for a second look. However, we had heard such good things about the food, we thought we'd try again and we weren't disappointed. Amy did such a good job, bless her- she's a star! At first though we were disappointed to see the menu had changed, but couldn't say it was for the better- not much choice now - 4 starters, one of them being garlic bread ??? always thought garlic bread was a side dish. Also there were thai fishcakes as a starter and 2 thai curries, as well as 2 rib eye steak choices, on the mains. This didn't give much scope for variety. What wasn't clear on the menu was whether you could have a choice of anything else, other than chips. Also some of the dishes weren't descriptive enough- veggie lasagne sounded nice, but looked like it came on it's own with no accompaniments, as none were listed. the stuff listed on the specials board has been on there so long now, they should go on the main menu and be replaced with more specials! That aside, we had thai fishcakes, with a side salad as a starter, which were delicious, although the sauce was a bit too hot, so we left that. To follow I had a sirloin steak (it's a shame they only came in 10 oz sizes as it's a huge piece of meat to eat in one sitting), with chips, lovely mushrooms cooked in butter, onion rings, salad etc. The steak tasted lovely and was cooked beautifully. My partner had the mixed grill. He was hugely impressed- proper sausages from the local butcher, not catering ones, along with a plateful of quality meats, mushies etc and cooked perfectly. We washed it down with a very reasonably priced Merlot and had no room for pudding. We did have a brandy coffee each, though. What was very surprising and seemed so cheapskate is that Elmlea cream substitute was used instead of double cream(!!??). Don't like the taste of that stuff so will give brandy coffees a miss next time, as it spoilt it for me. Amy and Lorraine made us feel so welcome and were very friendly and chatty. We really enjoyed our visit there, along with the food (Elmlea aside!) We did well to finish it all, as there was loads- definitely good value for money and if they started using fresh veg with their Sunday dinners, we may even go back on a Sunday.

What a little gem of a place! The Swan Inn, The Roe, St Asaph. From the outside, a friendly looking pub with hanging baskets and bench tables, the inside a typical village pub with half the area set for dining whilst retaining the pub atmosphere in the remaining space. Plus a large pub garden at the rear. Street parking. The owners have been doing meals since last November.John and Lisa made us most welcome and we were able to select from the printed menu plus specials on the chalkboard. Starters included Cheesy nachos with dip, pitta bread with houmous and olives, pate, mussels, garlc bread and cheese. Mains inlcuded home made lasagne, chicken Jalfrezi, beef Madras, 8oz Welsh rib-eye. 10oz gammon, scampi, Swan Burger and the specials board - mixed grill, beer battered fish and chips. There is also a children's menu and a mouthwatering selection of home made sweets to chose from.Hubby enjoyed a starter of pate with Melba toast and I tucked into the nachos with dip and cheese. These were followed by a mixed grill for him and a steaming hot portion of fresh battered cod, chips and mushy peas. The mixed grill was a meat feast and hubby's eyes lit up when John carried his plate to the table using both hands! My fish had been bought the same morning from a local independant fishmonger and I was thrilled with the freshness of the cod, the delicious crispy beer batter and home cut and cooked chips. Simply a delicious meal. We would have liked to have sampled the desserts but as the starter and mains had been so huge and delicious, we were not able to eat another bite! Lisa the cook came over to our table and explained how she sourced the fresh ingredients, she likes cooking everything from scratch, none of the typical "chicken ding" you get from pub chain restaurants using microwaves. You could tell, the mushrooms had been pan fried in Welsh butter, along with the sirloin steak, gammon steak, lamb chop, black pudding, sausages (Butchers sausage not frozen) etc.Did we enjoy the meal? Yes! Definately. Was it value for money? Can't see how they make a profit, yes, most definately worth every penny (starters from £1.80, mains from £5.95). Will we go back? Yes and this time take friends with us to share the experience. Thank you John and Lisa for a wonderful evening, great food, good company, lovely relaxed pub atmosphere, good luck to you both with this relatively new venture.

It is the first time I entered this cafe for over 60 years. Walking into my past. A spotlessly clean and sharp evocation of what an ice cream parlour was in the 1950’s - beautiful. The service was friendly and charming. Coffee with frothed milk - not a modern affectation. Where else can you get a cup of comfort in such historic surroundings for £1.28? I am sure the ice cream would have been as good as I remembered. An absolute gem and Rhyl should celebrate it.
