Saw the Pensioner special they offer, 2 courses for £9.95p, tried it today and what good value, excellent service and more than enough. I had the soup(minestrone) and Roast Turkey. I don't know how the Swan does it at this price. Good to see photo's of my nephew there, he was a FireFighter when there was a big fire some years ago, he was involved in that fire and got a bravery award for his efforts.

We are in Clitheroe for a week and settled on the Swan and Royal because their menu seem reasonably priced from outside. I had the Sirloin steak for approximately £18 and my partner had the lamb shank which was similarly priced. It was absolutely perfect from start to finish. Beautiful cuts of meat, piping hot chips and home made Peppercorn sauce. I usually only leave reviews when I'm unhappy, but the meal here was outstanding! Friendly staff too. A+

I wasn’t overly impressed with the pub. It wasn’t terrible but it wasn’t great either. The pros are that it is clean, spacious and the food was tasty. The cons are that it took the food an hour to get to the table, people who came in after us got their food before us, staff didn’t really apologise or give a reason and locals in the pub advised us of other places that serve faster. Don’t think I’ll visit again.

And yes would recommend staying here and yes the breakfast is also really good. The rooms are really nice and the rooms are big and comfortable.

Visited on Saturday afternoon, not to busy, easy to get a table. Very welcoming with the fires on 🔥 Served by a lovely polite young waitress. The menu was decent with a specials board and not too pricey, ie cheese and onion pie, chips and beans £9.95. I was gutted that the cheese and onion pie had all gone but another excuse to go back to the pub. I had lasagne which was fantastic. My partner had chicken and mushroom pie and my daughter had chicken curry. All brilliant. We also had duck spring rolls for starter - the best ever!! The baguettes being served to other tables also looked great, especially the hot beef and gravy. Thanks for a lovely meal, we willbe back.

Went here pre covid and had a lovely meal so our first port of call on a recent visit to the town, what a mistake this was. We ordered a fish and chips and a steak pudding and chips, these arrived at the table less than a few minutes after ordering, clearly microwaved and tasted like it as well. If you are going to serve your customers bought in microwaved junk then at least give the impression it's decent food. The young man who served us deserves a mention as he was pleasant, polite and very friendly and frankly wasted in a establishment like this. A chef-de-ping that's serving Brakes frozen junk thats best avoided

On holiday and parking was difficult, compounded by our chosen venue being closed as were kitchens in other pubs. Literally leaving 30 minutes before we could have received a fine we asked if we could have a meal in that time. Not only did they agree but also had no problems in offering alternatives to the menu. Sadly we had to question if the food would take much longer on one occasion, but the fault was all ours with the restricted time we gave. When it arrived it was clearly freshly cooked. My own choice of steak and Guinness pie was among the best I've had being rich and full flavoured. The crust was a very delicate puff pastry and chips were fluffy and golden and on a par with the best I've ever had (in Plymouth) We shared a spring roll starter, which again is highly recommended, with the quality matched by the presentation. It was table service and both members of staff (two ladies) could not have been more apologetic for delays although had we not been in such a rush timings would have been more than perfect. Liking to try new local ales when I'm on holiday I was slightly disappointed with the choice, although the Wainwrights was in excellent condition. It would be churlish to mark a venue down owing to an irrational personal trait though. Considering we never expected to be dining here the staff were really helpful and the quality of the food and drink excellent. We would return if in the area again.

Visited here and was spoken to rudely when asked if we were having food or a drink. We wanted food and the pub was quite quiet. Advised that large parties were in later so we couldn't stay. Unsure if we got a drink whether we could have had a table for 2 and if so what the difference would have been. No sincerely at all and actually quite rude. Vowed not to return as we tried to wrestle our 2 year olds buggy down the steps without any offer of assistance.

My partner child and I just walked into this pub for a quick lunch. There were probably 3 tables from 20 with customers but we were instantly treated with 'if you want food then no. We have some big parties in latter today'. Firstly we would have been roughly 40 minutes with our food. Secondly there was 2 adults and a 2 year old. Hardly a stretch to get us a small table. Lastly the blonde male and younger male bar person whole manner was rude and we left feeling like we were not wanted at all. Glad to take our custom elsewhere.

I have to say that I was completely wrong to dismiss this place. We ordered the two course lunch consisting of soup and a roast dinner. At £9.50, it is a good deal. The Swan and Royal is the sort of spacious pub that might seem alright when busy, but on a wet Friday night, with no more than a dozen punters, the overly loud DJ seemingly playing music to himself seemed rather sad. And if that didn't make you feel depressed, the empty spaces, double bank of one armed bandits and very average beer might tip you over the edge.

I couldn't believe the size of portion, lots of very succulent beef, three vegetables plus roast and boiled potatoes. Lots of lovely gravy and more on request, it was delicious. The lasagne was beautiful (I was informed!)For desert we had two fruit crumbles with plenty of custard and one trifle with fresh cream all of which was superb. We were served by two young women who really know what customer service is all about, from one who has had experience of hotels and restaurants I am particular on this score. The price of kidney beans and rice must have risen as I drove to Clitheroe. At The Swan and Royal they can only afford to give you about 2 oz of bog standard over-cooked rice in their chilli con carne garnished with eight beaten up beans.Never mind, the pudding may be better. It said "Fruit crumble and custard". I had to ask the barman twice "What fruit is used?". Perhaps it's hard to understand a northern accent in Lancashire! "Apple" I was finally told. As I went back to my seat, another customer asked the barwoman what the fruit was. She didn't know and had to ask. This was at the end of the lunch service. How on earth could they not know the fruit in the crumble if two people had asked in just three minutes? How many had asked in the previous three hours? It was rhubarb. I thought you had to know your menu to work in catering. There wasn't that much on offer, so it is incomprehensible that they both didn't know a basic fact, but at least the woman asked the kitchenIn place of apple crumble, I had spotted dick. It has obviously came from the warehouse in a plastic sleeve as it appeared to have been cooked in it. It took several attempts to break through the outer wall into the insipid dough. If the food was bad, the service was appalling. As an older woman, I am used to not being noticed. I am never usually totally ignored. I arrived at 2.30pm and asked if they were still serving lunch. The barman said I had until 2.45pm to order. That was strange as outside the advertising said that lunch was until 3pm.Only 15 minutes to order. I wasn't given a menu. I had to ask and then I became transparent. He tidied up the nearby tables but he didn't come to me. Obviously he didn't want me to have time to order my meal. There weren't many people in the pub, but two women on a neighbouring table commiserated with me as they were aware that I was the invisible woman. They had noticed too that he clearly said that he would come over to take my order.I went to bar, only to be ignored as he was having a riveting conversation with two old soaks at the bar. I knew my place. I thought that to work in the hospitality industry, you had to have some awareness of customer service. The barman didn't notice when I had finished my first course. The women on the other table ended up taking their empty plates to the bar to get their puddings. Perhaps he thinks that women in Clitheroe shouldn't be allowed out on their own.But he did once come to the table unexpectedly. At 3pm he cleared my table of the used cardboard beer mats. I must have looked like a baddie who was going to make off with his precious property. All in all, don't bother to go there. The staff can't be bothered with you, so why should you bother with them.

My partner and I visited here on Sunday and we were impressed with the decoration and is a lovely hotel - I ordered the gammon and my partner the beef roast - my meal was lovely and quite happy with it but my partner asked for medium to well done but she was not happy with it because it was a bit tough and if you check your video mate we were not asked once if everything is okay, I approached the bar to ask if we could have the meet wrapped up for the dog only before I could say anything he said "The toilets are over". It would be best policy to wait and listen to what the customer is going to ask before second guessing. We both agreed that the landlord looked to be on the defensive most of the time as if expecting trouble, oh he was polite enough of course but could do with a more happy approach, consequently my partner and I just decided to not visit again

Walking through clitheroe on a Sunday afternoon looking for somewhere to eat. When you see all the chain pubs they blatantly advertise "kids welcome" but not so sure with some of the olde worlde pubs. We settled on the swan and Royal after seeing "kids corner" on the menu. Pub was pretty quiet but we were greeted on arrival and found somewhere to sit. Ordered luxury steak pudding and kids cheeseburger. Couple of tables next to us ordered starters which came before ours but I don't mind waiting for food that has been "cooked" as opposed to being "nuked!" When the food arrived we were not disappointed! The steak pudding was to die for! It had been nowhere near a microwave, was steaming hot and the meat filling just melted in the mouth. The kids cheeseburger had a nice touch - it was a proper beef burger served on a muffin instead of a bun. I couldn't even eat all my pudding as it was the biggest portion I had seen! The ambience was that of pub you probably only visit once but had character. The staff were lovely and even when the waitress kept delivering food to the wrong tables it had comedy value. Very impressed.

The gentleman (who I'm assuming is the manager) seriously lacked any kind of customer service skills, no apology, lent across people without saying 'excuse me' & just generally didn't have any manners. If they'd have said how long the food was going to be when we ordered we could've made a decision whether to go elsewhere. The food was good once it arrived, but the lack of interest from 'the manager' and the ridiculous wait, means I won't return.

I think had I known the noise would have been this bad I would have opted for somewhere more quieter than on castle street. We also checked in about 5 and were looking forward to a pub meal which has been highly reviewed but were told they had stopped serving at 5pm! Find this really bizarre for a Saturday night. We ended up getting chips up the road which did the trick! bar also seemed understaffed in the evening as the poor girl had to serve lots of people as well as show us to our rooms and check us in. The place also was in good need of a hoover in our rooms and downstairs after the night before.Overall we liked the quirkiness of the place and the staff and breakfast but would probably stay somewhere else if I ever needed to stay a weekend night in Clitheroe. Can imagine it's perfect for a getaway during the week.

I stayed one night here and found my room to be spacious with an amazingly comfy four poster bed. The bathroom, on the other hand, was tiny and I do mean tiny. The bath with fitted shower was good (apart from losing the water pressure through my shower on a few occasions) but the two foot gap between the shower and the wall where the toilet was jammed made it almost impossible to use. A much better option would have been to put just a shower in there and free the space up a bit.Location wise it is really good and has a late bar (not so good if you want an early night but not too much of a problem). The staff were friendly and helpful enough but the room was a overpriced for what it was.Breakfast was okay and served by a jolly lady who was attentive once we found her.The place is looking a little tired around the edges and is in need of a little TLC.

We stayed recently for two nights. Staff were excellent, food was fresh and very good. Service excellent and room clean and tidy all in all a great stay. This is not a modern chain but an old fahioned coaching style inn very good for short break. Fantastic location on the main street of Clitheroe.

This hotel is in the middle of Clitheroe, close to the castle and all amenities. Staff at the hotel are very friendly (as most of the people in Clitheroe seem to be) and most rooms are large and well equipped. Many interesting people appear to have stayed here ranging from Churchill (no not the dog) to Miss Whiplash. Breakfast is good but no meals available in the evening when at weekends the place turns into a real lively hotspot. Loud disco music vibrates the building until 1pm and revellers outside carry on until about 2pm. That said, if you don't want the noisy nights, it would be a great mid-week hotel to use. Prices very reasonable and although there is a small amount of car parking be prepared for cramped conditions and an entry that only leaves a few inches either side of the car. A good value for money hotel if you don't mind the noise.

There were six of us staying at the Swan and Royal for bed and breakfast. We all wanted a different selection, but the lady who served us was very friendly and efficient. The breakfast was excellent. Service was quick and the food hot and plentiful.

We had Sunday lunch here, it was a typical sunday roast dinner, the food was ok and value for money, you got what you paid for. The place itself was a bit tired but had character. It would have been better if the dining area was separate from the pub, that way we would not have had to listen to a group of young lads swearing and discussing their

The pub is unassuming and doesn't promise a lot but the staff were great, good was lovely steady grub. Great value, tasty and altogether worth the money we paid. Apparently the pensioner special is good too.

We dropped into the Swan & Royal after finding Qzine had stopped serving food at about 2.30 pm but that's another story for another review.Four of us found a table quickly and ordered our drinks and food order at the bar. Cheerful bar staff and food was with us in double quick time. My steak and kidney pie was obviously home made and packed with tasty, moist meat. Accompanying vegetable, new potatoes, carrots and peas were well cooked, altogether a delicious pub meal. Other three in our party were well satisfied with their offerings and we left the Swan & Royal happy and complete. We will definitely eat here again when we next visit Clitheroe.

We go to clitheroe on a fortnightly basis and fancied a change from maxwells and the emporium. Inside it was nicely decorated and the menu was brill-loads to choose from! Three if us had the luxury steak pudding and one had the chicken tikka. We ordered at the bar and got our drinks. We then waited fourty minutes for our food! The couple on the next table must have also had a long wait as they asked the waitress if they had been forgotten about to which she said they were busy today with it being a bank holiday. It was clearly not busy at all. Our food then came but we didn't have any knives and forks! The waitress went off and five minutes later finally came back with some. At no point did she ask if we would like any sauces. We were then left alone, the waitress didn't come back to ask if everything was ok or even to clear our plates away. The good couldn't be faulted, great value for money but the service was disgraceful.

Decided to go here for my sons 16th Birthday and used a groupon offer....it was a night to remember for all the wrong reasons....we were greeted by a lady called Patricia who needs lessons in customer service. First of all we politely said we did not need our candle lighting & she replied 'well so long as I have offered because when my boss asked why I have not lit your candle' (there wasn't even a candle on the next table!). Then nobody asked if we would like a drink. We ordered 2 prawns and 2 chicken goujons to start. The owner then came to set the table and asked who had ordered mussels... no one... then Patricia came back and rudley said 'you ordered mussels...why did you say you ordered goujons?'....er maybe because we didn't & because we don't like mussels...she replied 'I didn't know that!' I asked to speak to the owner & he was not much better...I just wanted an apology from Patricia but she was was unwilling to do so. I would have walked out had I not have already paid for my meal. Needless to say I will not be returning for food or drink...luckily I have a choice of another 90 restaurants in Clitheroe to choose from.

I visited the Pavillion cafe on Sunday for some lunch. I have a severe nut allergy (anaphylaxis) and therfore made the server aware when ordering our food. I asked for the fish and chips and she seemed very unsure so went to check with the kitchen which was good. After making me aware that nuts were used in the kitchen however were not used in any of the fryers I decided to go ahead with the order. However, before our food arrived she came back over to ask if I had my epipen on me which obviously made me feel very uncomfortable and unsafe eating there. Therefore, when the food arrived I didn’t feel safe to eat it and had to give it to my partner. As an allergy sufferer I was very disappointed in the handling of the situation as every restaurant/cafe I have visited in recent years have been very educated on allergies and have been very reassuring and taken it seriously: checking if anyone has any allergies on ordering, providing ingredient lists and making staff aware which meals need to be prepared with more care etc. I am only writing this review in the hope that staff here become better trained on how to handle customers with allergies as I feel they were not at the standard they should be. I do not want to but a negative view on the cafe as the food looked lovely and my partner did enjoy the food.

I ordered the crispy lamb salad which was well presented on lettuce but it was burnt. I was asked how was my food and said that the lamb was burnt and I couldn’t eat it. The waitress said that she would tell the chef. Nothing happened. It was three very expensive burnt mouthfuls for £21.
