The State Bar in Glasgow City

The State hasn't served food since lockdown and the drop off in office workers coming in for lunch. Such a pity as the Xmas lunches were always such a treat. But, it's still the best boozer in the area.

Cracking historical boozer that welcomes all. Great decor and loads of beers on tap. Good atmosphere on a Friday night, full of city workers wanting a few drinks in a great establishment.

Nice traditional pub, reasonable prices,just don't expect a welcome or smile from the dour faced staff,quite the glum bunch.

This bar can be a hit or miss used to be a great bar quiet but you rarely get any issues. Quite often the door staff turn customers away at the door saying that was them now closed. I would normally understand this but 10pm on a Saturday. These guys need to up their game or sort out new door staff.

Great little pub, can get pretty crowded but has a good vibe either way. Service was good, not the most accommodating for making hot drinks but otherwise very attentive. Good spot to go for a few drinks with friends.

Such a great pub; to my mind the best in Glasgow. There's always a great, well chosen, selection of cask beers and it is uniformly well kept. Prices are great for Glasgow (£4.65 for any cask beer, no matter the abv, £5.50 when there's a keg line on, including real treats like Polly's). And the decor is fab too...proper old school Glaswegian boozer interior - dark wood, island bar. Friendly staff, reliably good beer, central location that is always easy to pop in on when you're in town for other things. I've done a lot of 'research' on Glasgow pubs - trust me, this is one not to miss.

Pub that ticks all the boxes. Great cask beer. Nice pub dog. Regulars arguing with the staff. Amazing whisky range. Nooks and crannies to sit in. Nobody bothering you if you want a quiet pint. People to talk to if you want a chat. What's not to love

Great atmosphere and jam session.

The best pub in Glasgow. The State bar is clean, well maintained. There is lots of pictures on the walls, of variety act of the good old days, with the Kings Theatre being a few minutes walks away. The real ale is kept in top-tip condition. With 7 real ale hand pumps, there's always something for everyone. If ale's not your thing, other alcoholic beverages are available, with a good wee selection of whisky. The staff are very knowledgeable, friendly & welcoming. Nancy, the manager, is a national treasure

Just off Sauchiehall Street, we loved this bar. Lovely old central bar, several real ales, various tables and alcoves, a TV but not intrusive. Knowledgeable bar lady who enlightened us about 80 Shilling beers. A real quality boozer in a lovely city.

Nice laid back and upscale pub. Had a cider and hung out for an hour no worries.

A proper boozer. An old school interior, warm and comforting. Sport on the box and some great pints on tap. This is what a pub should be about. A great venue to meet pals.

Only visit this bar occasionally when in the top part of town. Competitive pricing, friendly attentive staff, ideal for a quick drink or longer sessions. Proper pub decor, and large oval bar, plenty of seats, TVs for watching sports etc.

Grabbing a couple of pints in here prior to a gig at the Garage. Great old fashioned looking pub with a lovely atmosphere. Good selection of drinks including some super craft beers. We'll be back if we're out this end of Glasgow.

From the second we walked in, the bar staff made us welcome by immediately asking when we were leaving the premises and that one pint each was all we could have. 😁🙏

I don’t remember which beer I had, but it was delicious. I had a good time here and would come back. Service was excellent. I liked the overall setup of the bar. Great for watching sports.

One of the best bars in glasgow

Only myself and one other gent in the bar on Easter. After ordering my drink I asked if it would be okay to have the midday football put on, the State has Sky Sports. I was met with a rude “football overload in here” accompanied by with a tut. There is a reason this place is stone dead on a bank holiday, the lady behind the bar. There’s just no need to speak to people like this and make them feel so unwelcome. I quickly finished my drink and left, and couldn’t put this review up quickly enough. A lovely pub that is wasted with service like that, or the lack of it

Decent pint busy but not stowed

Have been here many times before and loved it. Came in for a pint in an empty bar and got a horrible attitude off the older woman behind the bar for seemingly no reason. Walked out before even trying my pint. Shame as won’t be back.

Had a bad experience with the barman when he heard my accent ignored me twice when needing service I tapped him on the shoulder he turned round and said you don't tap a barman I said you ignored me twice he then said I'm not serving you get someone else to serve me turned again and your not getting served at all I'm from Dundee and proud of it think you need to get rid of idiots like that very disappointed won't be back.

A great traditional 'centre, circular bar'. A good selection of real ales. And best of all, live music (blues) every 2nd Tues (8 pm)

Nice looking bar with reasonable beer selection but it took a long time to get served.

Quality bar with a good selection of ales and lagers.

Bit disappointed, beer tasty enough but pretty flat. Service perfunctory, borderline rude once he heard my English accent: no smile or basic service manners. Obviously looking elsewhere, shame as really close to our hotel.

Friendly staff who warned us that the heating wasn't working before we ordered drinks. Stayed anyway and was glad as it's a great pub.

Hate pubs that allow staff to vape behind the bar. Very unprofessional. While the other bar person is busy rolling cigarettes. 1 pint visit. Often get the feeling you're getting in the way. Great interior, cosy and usually good atmosphere. But sort out the staff.

There aren’t many really nice bars in this end of the city centre and I was surprised I hadn’t stumbled (figuratively or literally) into this one. Nestled off a side street of the now somewhat rundown Sauchiehall street The State Bar is beautifully decorated inside. Rich wood and brass and vintage decor but tasteful and authentic. Service was efficient and they had a good selection of modern draught ales. Highly recommended for all ages and stages

Traditional glaswegian bar in a brilliant location in the city centre.

Love this bar as it has loads of cask ale and real ales on draught. It's almost always busy but a Sunday midday is great for chilling when there's usually no one there if that's your thing.

Quality pub serving quality beer.

Great atmosphere. The only disappointment is that we didn't find this place until the final night of our 4 night stay in Glasgow. Lovely old fashioned pub with a circular wooden bar in the centre of the main area and old pictures, etc, on the walls. And a decent range of real/craft ales available, which sadly, some of the "old fashioned" pubs don't seem to offer. Will come back next time.

A wonderful bar! Friendly and welcoming and beautiful. What a lovely manageress- very knowledgeable about all the real beers on offer. But the space itself- my God, its the sort of place you would recommend to any tourist. Great experience!

Wir waren eine Woche in Glasgow und jeden Tag wenigstens einmal im State. Zu jeder Tageszeit verschiedene immer tolle Atmosphäre, nicht nur die Wirtin ist supernett und hält den Laden familiär zusammen, entsprechend freundlich sind ihre Gäste auch. Meine wärmste Empfehlung. Dienstags sind wir ahnungslos reingestolpert als "The State Bar Blue Jam" spielte, bester Blues seit langem! Und dann durfte ich auf der harp mitspielen. Unvergesslicher Abend, super Stimmung, wer auch nur ein klein wenig Blues mag, muss dahin!

We were walking around killing time before going to GFT, found this place and stopped in for a pint, lovely chilled atmosphere, nice welcoming boozer, definitely be back.

This is a gem in the heart of Glasgow. A classic round bar with traditional fittings. Quirky quotes adorn the walls with some interesting art. It currently has six cask conditioned ales available on tap. Bar staff are welcoming and will give you a sample of the ales to try before you choose. Great pub, don't miss out if you're visiting Glasgow.

Lovely busy but quiet bar for a drink with friends..🥂🥃

Our large group went here for a pint and was pleasantly surprised with the atmosphere! The hung pictures, wooden carvings, ceiling map, and the overall craftsmanship of the interior make it a great place to come repeatedly. There's something new to see every time. The staff are amazing! The selection of beverages is very good as well. I will be trying the food next year when we're back.

Nice staff, big screens for sport, impressive ceiling

Frequent winner of CAMRA Glasgow branch pub of the year. Apparently it's because it regularly has a particular beer on and a group of members vote for it. Bar manager says that they do not sell Dark Real Ales. So if you want light coloured Real Ale, it's an excellent place, beers are well kept. Disappointing if you like some variation, which a CAMRA pub of the year should have.

1st time in to get out of the cold. Round central bar with a broad selection of hand pulled ales and also the usual beers and lagers. Lots of seating and tables around the base of the walls. Lots of historic posters and flyers to read on the walls. Don't know if they do food as we were only in for a drink. Ladies loos according to my wife were clean. Don't know about the gents, didn't go. Will go back in when we're next in that part of Glasgow.

A fantastic pub, well worth a visit!

Stumbled across this wonderful little traditional pub. Lady behind the bar was just lovely, welcoming and funny. We spend a lovely relaxed hour with a gorgeous pint of black gold. Just how every pub should be full of character and history.
