Our stay was really disappointing. Although the Landlord was very friendly and the evening meal was okay, the room was really tatty and in dire need of some attention. The lighting in the en suite was poor, there is no mirror in the bedroom so impossible to dry your hair and see what you're actually doing. There was only one chair in the 'double' room and I put double in inverted commas because the bed was up again the wall so if you were sleeping next to the wall you had to climb over the other person to get into bed (and I don't mean in a fun way!) The only hanging space for clothes was 4 hooks on the back of the door, everything else had to be left in the suitcase and there wasn't much floor space. Breakfast was only continental and was clearly set out the night before, so croissants and pain au chocolate in plastic wrappers, the coffee was awful and the hot water not particularly hot. Not a teapot in sight and no where to leave teabags except in your saucer. But the curtains summed up everything; tired and well past their best - see photo

Bit disappointing. Room was very cold, especially the bathroom. Plug didn't fit sink allowing water to drain. Bedding felt cold and unaired. Friendly hosts, clean everywhere, just not warm. Needed coat on to eat evening meal. With these issues attended to, could be nice but currently wouldn't recommend. Food was good. Not so much the breakfast.

An attractive pub in an attractive village that reinforces the golden rule that Sunday roast lunches should be restricted to home cooking. A huge quantity of overcooked bland vegetables accompanied topside of beef that was also lacking seasoning and was not even close to being rare - as reported it would be.

Food was okay, chips are always tasty! Although the burger looked good it wasn’t the nicest. Staff were great but the landlord hasn’t got very good customer skills and comes off as unfriendly unless he likes/knows you. Have been on a couple of separate occasions to just have a drink and when it gets to 9:30pm he makes you feel as though you’re not wanted, huffing and puffing around the place. Also makes you feel rushed and as though he’s got better things to be doing. Seen both the landlord and landlady hanging out the back door vaping which to me is very unprofessional!

The only pub in the village and unfortunately it fell short of our expectations. Friendly staff, but I think the menu choices need more variation. A few finishing touches too, like lemon served with whitebait etc would be good, a choice of skinny or chunky chips and the condiments served in small dishes not sachets would be so much nicer. I appreciate this may be down to the current pandemic so am hoping should we return it may have improved. Sometimes the little things make a difference.

The Star has everything to recommend it:, welcoming and friendly staff, cosy bar and seating area, small dining space, larger dining room. My group of thirty was booked for lunch after a very wet walk. The tables in the larger dining room were laid out very attractively and joy, beautiful, white cloth napkins. It is no mean feat to serve a large party, so well done Star Inn team. The food was good quality, good portions, very well presented and served on hot plates. Super attention to detail. Many thanks.

Heard there was a new chef so was excited to try out. Was welcomed by a very friendly lady, offered drinks and was shown to our table in a very nice area of the pub. Had been to the pub before under the old landlords so it was a nice surprise to see all of the changes! Was well looked after by a lovely young lady. Was made awear when order was taken that there would be a wait due to a large party that was about to served, but didn’t realise this would be 40 minutes for starters. When the pate arrived it was runny and more of a cream consistency, was very disappointed. Apologies were made and was told the chef was awear, confused as to why it was served? Mains were the same waiting time, if not longer. Mains were okay but could’ve done better myself. Was offered desserts but after looking at the menu didn’t think the price was justified for the waiting time. In my opinion, the size of them compared to the price was very unreasonable - we happened to see a few that came out and weren’t impressed. It was highly advertised about the new chef, but it was obvious that he couldn’t cope with the amount of people and the standard of food. It was quite clear to see that the three members of staff were under a lot of stress but they still remained professional and we’re all very attentive to everyone. May return in a couple of months when the chef is in the swing of things.

We went to this pub as it has changed hands and we wanted to try it out. There was a temporary chef with a temporary menu as they are new. It was an interesting menu, with a couple of pub classics, although these were a bit "cheffy". For example sausage and mash with mustard mash and Cumberland sausage, and ham egg and chips with poached not fried eggs. This would be fine, but the eggs had set by the time the meal came out. It was the first I had heard of flat iron chicken (I know about flat iron steak though?)

Subsequently been informed that the manager/family have given their notice !! So i suggest that until new owners come in, to give it a miss as from their attitude they dont want to be busy? A great traditional country pub. There was a great, genuine and friendly atmosphere where the locals are happy to chat along with visitors. We ate there a few times over the past few days and the food was excellent; great portion sizes too! We recommend the Sulgravey Suppers if you are in the village on a Wednesday evening ...it's a special put on for the locals of a choice of two dishes for $6 ...it's very popular so book early ...the thing we loved most about this evening was the fact that the pub was filled with locals but they made us feel very welcome. This place is the real deal, none of that "try hard" pretence that some country pubs exude these days.

We were going to the Red Lion at Culworth but found they were closed for holiday so ended up at The Star which we used to use quite regularly some years ago when under different management. There were a party of people on their way to a wedding and the young guy behind the bar seemed a little overwhelmed, we ordered drinks and when asked for ice he produced a small plastic measuring jug with a large lump of ice in which he proceeded to break up with some tongs. The menu was quite uninspiring mainly large meals and a menu of filled rolls, we opted for the Fritata with fries and salad. When it arrived it was not the nicest looking Frittata I had seen and you could see from looking at it that it was very oily and had a deep fried smell, the chips were OK but the salad leaves had died a while ago. Both our frittatas were completely burnt on half a side underneath and very oily so ended up leaving half. This is a shame because this pub used to serve great food and have a nice atmosphere something which is now missing. There are lots of other great pubs in the area especially the Red Lion at Culworth so I would give this one a miss.

This pub, 200 yards from my home, is ancient and charming, like most of the rest of the village. It is just a stone's throw from Sulgrave Manor, the ancestral home of George Washington (actually it was his 5th times great grandfather's home!), but is historic in its own right. Though it has changed landlords several times in the last couple of years, it serves consistently good beer and food - not particularly fancy, but well cooked and excellently presented. The decor is old and rustic without being particularly fussy or 'authentic', and guests feel welcome and comfortable here.

We are staying here tonight and are loving every moment. The room is very quaint and the bed is the most comfy one my wife and I have ever stayed in.The food at dinner was really great and some tasty drinks. It is just so welcoming and quintessentially British. The peas with mint sauce was a triumph.Would love to stay againT&L

4 of us arrived for our meal, ordered drinks and sat at our table, the landlord proceeded to take our order after sitting down at the table next to us (a bit odd but hey). One meal came out, then 10 minutes later the next 3 followed, 2 burgers were ordered, the meat of the burgers were OK although but the buns would have been easier to eat if they were made from plasterboard, chips were under cooked and some were cold. Grapes in a salad were a bit odd. Had £3 taken off our bill as a refund???? WOW!! Paid the bill and left, won't be returning.

What a little find this was. Excellent food, good service, fine local beers on tap and very friendly staff, although very quiet for a Saturday night. Well priced for what we wanted - would recommend for a quiet evening catching up with friends.

Why have I never been here before? Well haven't I missed out, I remember this pub being a favourite of my parents many, many years ago. Its a traditional pub which has been left alone and retains its lovely original features. Great atmosphere, very friendly staff and fab food. So pleased to have a simple one page menu, I really do not like menus with too much choice and they always make me very wary, how can the food possibly be freshly cooked? Not a pie fan normally but the pastry was fabulous and proper dauphinoise potatoes, you don't find them on a pub menu very often. Sensible prices too. Will definitely be back and have recommended to everyone I know. Totally agree with all the previous positive reviews. Great stuff.

Lovely old pub in nice part of Northamptonshire. Food nicely presented, I had fish and chips, which came laid on greaseproof paper in a mini fryer, the mushy peas in a small casserole dish. Good size garden at rear, I should imagine a busy place for families on a sunny day!

After our visit to Sulgrave Manor we decided to walk into the village which is a short distance. We ate at this pub and it was terrific. We had butterfly chicken and lovely crispy chips and salad. They sell Hook Norton ale which is a local brewery. The food was excellent and would definitely revisit. The village is peaceful and quiet and fabulous for a relaxing and enjoyable afternoon out.

The Star have recently updated their menu so we thought we'd visit again. The seafood platter was advertised as a main but they kindly provided a sharing platter with great chilli sauce as a starter for us which worked really well. That meant we had room for the good quality mains (my husband had steak and I had the seemingly renowned aberbeen angus beef burger) topped off by a couple of really chocolatey desserts. All in all, great company and great food - would definitely recommend.

Im a local to the Star Inn, I have been a big fan since it switched hands in march 2013! The new tenants do their up most constantly to try and please all that come through their doors. Firstly i would like to mention how cheap the prices are for the quality of food. Their prices are almost matching and sometimes cheaper than the Weatherspoon chain style - yet the taste is 100% better! (along with every aspect - beer, atmosphere etc) Secondly - I actually asked to buy and take away a couple of burgers, sausages and chicken breasts with me once - Sue the head Chef agreed to do this as I'm such a big fan of her food - the chicken tastes better than any supermarket meat I've ever tried. And the Burgers are to die for!!! (Even when i cooked them, I could'nt compete with the Star's outcome - They win!) Thirdly - Salad with fruit is a signature style for this pub - Some people just don't understand this concept and don't "like" the taste of fruit in salad - Me personally, I LOVE fruit within salad - It makes it a bit more special, tasteful and exotic! Bee the head waitress has been a part of the main staff running this place for over 10 years - She is excellent and always offers ways to help out customers. Paul the jolly old man behind the bar is also brilliant - A typical image of a country landlord you expect to find in a local pub. (Charming) I know for a fact that the star will not offer a refund to "picky" eaters when they have consumed everything on their plate - Its like trying to return a dress once you've worn it and covered it in stains… I think these type are called "professional complainers" and they use "TripAdvisor" a lot. All in all - This is one of my favourite locals - It is not pretentious, The food is good value for money and the atmosphere is homely, friendly and all round brilliant. Please give it a go yourself and try the best burgers I've ever had! Along with one of the cleanest, tastiest Ales around! Me and my partner eat here at least once a week, He indulges in the Ale and i indulge in everything it offers! (The Coffee is superb as well! And our Dog loves the large garden you can get lost in!!) Try before you judge - I recommend The Star Inn very very highly!

We visited on a week day lunch time. Ordered burgers and have to admit that these were some of the worst that we had tasted for a long while. They were advertised as 100% Angus beef which they probably were but they tasted like the cheaper Angus burgers that you get from a super market where all you taste is fat and little else in the way of seasoning or herbs. Came with a small wire basket of chips and a small salad (very odd with peach and grapes!) At £9.95 we had expected something a little better than this. I could only manage under a quarter of my meal. When she asked I did inform the bar lady / waitress that the burger wasn't good but wasn't offered a refund at all so I also have to mark value for money as only 1 star. The bar lady / Waitress though was nice and service was good - the only thing that I can give anything above a 1 star for! There are plenty of pubs out there that charge this price or less for a good quality home made burger. Will not be returning - sorry!

We were looking forward to coffee here. But despite the cafe being advertised as open on Mondays, it was very shuttered up and very closed. Shame that the website didn’t mention that, as we were disappointed. Perfectly understandable in the current economic climate, but we would have preferred to know in advance.

Been in many times, since the new owners took over and pleased with the decoration, I haven't eaten here yet, but hear good reports, the big downer for me and most of my friends is that even though the landlord promised and advertises craft ales, on the website, beers like Tribute and London Pride are not craft ales! There is a massive choice of lagers etc, so why not support craft ale producers/brewers? I see many locals in pubs not too far away that have craft beers available, so the EA is losing custom IMHO, I'm happy supporting my local and the pub do the same with local brewers please.
