Excelente joya escondida.

Very friendly people here and an interesting menu, but disappointed with the food today. Although the weather is variable at the moment, the restaurant was very cold with no heating on. Without giving too much information. sometimes you can be too fussy with food. Keep it simple, fresh , and stick to the menu descriptions. Very close to being five star but just didn’t tick the boxes today.. I’ll be back in warmer times and give it another go

Wow what a great find!! I was travelling for work and thought I'd stay here. The landlord and lady were great host and nothing was too much trouble, the rooms are lovely and have everything you need. Make sure you have a meal as the food is top notch and really well priced, they even made me an omelette for breakfast and it not on the menu. If I'm in the area again I will stay again.👍👍👍

After three visits in three months I've been impressed enough to pen a review. The food is simply incredible. I'd also describe it as excellent value for money, but that's really secondary to the quality. THIS is the standard of food I look for when we go out- food that would prove a real chore to replicate the quality and flavours of back at home. So often locally you pay £16-18 for a main and feel as if you were robbed- well here it's the other way round. Service is fantastic, from all the relatively small team. The only thing that changes regularly is the menu, which is why it's amazing to have had three top notch meal experiences in a row. Even when disappointement loomed on our last visit (the bubbly and always smiling waitress informed us that our one of our starter choices was unfortunately off the menu), the chef personally stepped in and provided us with a preview of his latest menu development. And let me tell you, this was the best scotch egg I've every tasted. Every single detail was perfection, and that's a recurring theme throughout his work. Out of three differnt three-course meals (and between two of us that's 18 different dishes in total) we've had just one dish that I would rate as 5/10 rather than 9 or 10/10. That takes some serious skill. The ale is also well kept and reasonably priced. For some reason everyone raves about the other local pub, but this surpasses in in every way.

Pub located around 20 minutes drive from Chichester in East Dean. Lots of street parking. Traditional English country pub decor with equally traditionally welcome and friendly service. Breakfast visit with excellent quality traditional English breakfast dishes, all very good including delicious Manx kippers. Definitely returning for lunch and/or dinner on next trip to the area. Highly recommended.

Arrived early evening no booking. The pub was busy only one barman working he was absolutely fantastic, polite, professional, quick, attentive it was like three people morphed into one he warmed his customers it may take slightly longer to be served emphasised quality was most important and so it proved to be the case without having to wait very long at all. The poor man without having enough on his hands, even ran out to give my wife her bag after she had left it behind. The food was delicious as well, really couldn’t fault what we ate. Nice choice of a couple of game dishes we had and all very reasonably price. If I’m ever back in this neck of the woods I will make sure to pop back. Very impressed keep up the great work and thanks for your hospitality

Sixth visit in seven months so we clearly like this place. However today the service very bad. After starters and main we waited 30 mins for the table to be cleared and dessert coffee orders to be taken as in prior visits. I went to the bar and asked the landlord for service at our table. He said no service at table “this is a pub”. Surprised I politely explained we had just finished our mains in the restaurant and he repeated “no table service you order at the bar”. So maybe this is a change in which case it should be explained. There were four waiting staff, the landlord and a lady manager chatting. Total six staff. Why have staff if it’s self service? And at £8 for dessert it is reasonable to be served. I was really disappointed mainly by the rude abrupt response to a perfectly reasonable request. I booked a late lunch through OpenTable and there were even later slots so timing should not be an issue. I paid the bill immediately and left. I won’t return again.

So disappointed with my meal. The rest of the group seemed happy with theirs but my lemon sole tasted distinctly the wrong side of fresh, the tender stem broccoli was yellow and the hollandaise sauce was NOT like any hollandaise I’ve ever tasted! When I queried the colour of the broccoli I was told emphatically and rather rudely that it was completely fresh and home grown! As a lady of mature years, I do think I know when broccoli is not fresh! I didn’t continue with my query as to have done so would have caused a distinctly unpleasant atmosphere. Such a pity as my family love the place, but i won’t be keen to return.

How great is it to see East Deans village pub reopen! I’ve popped in for a pint on a couple of occasions since it reopened in March, two well kept local ales and Doom Bar, which is not the beer it used to be. Yesterday we went there for Sunday lunch and thoroughly enjoyed it. We both chose Roast Pork, which was beautiful cooked. The meal was really well presented with crackling, plenty of Apple sauce (more was delivered immediately on request) Cauliflower Cheese served in a separate dish. We all had fish although there was lots to choose from including venison which I look forward to for our next visit. The Sea Bream was very tasty and it was served with asparagus and mashed potato, I had hake fish and chips and it was excellent. So a lovely pub, in a beautiful village with great food. Try it!

This was one of the worst meals I have (n)ever had. A shame as it is a nice looking pub in a good location. I ordered the Rib eye steak and asked for it rare When it eventually arrived it was like it had been bolied! I asked for it be replaced and was told by the rather abrupt and rude manageress that as it was a Rib Eye steak it was difficult to cook rare and maybe I would like to talk to the chef! In the end I went hungry as my table had finished their meals and we were ready to go. When it came time to settle the manageress had disappeared. The helpful barman said she had gone home. Appalled by the customer service. Another table behind us refused to pay as well. I was told by the barman that the regular chef is much better but he only works Monday - Friday! Avoid eating at this pub. The food is over priced for what is provided , the manageress is rude and unhelpful and the chef is not good. Spoilt my Sunday.

Very busy evening and they were great! We will definitely be coming back next year!

We've been a few times now, but yesterday, in the sunshine, was probably the best visit we've had. We were 10 people (5 adults, 5 children), sat comfortably, great service and everyone was happy. The garden was great for kids to run around in, too. Can't recommend it highly enough - we sometimes do the circular walk up behind it before, to work up an appetite, but it's just as good without!

Friendly barmaid here who bought out the menus, served our food and bought the drinks out too. Good to see a traditional village pub surviving and thriving (although this may have something to do with its proximity to Goodwood racecourse). It has been 'gentrified' a bit from its origins as a villagers pub, but retains a pub feel, especially in the walled garden. We all had the gammon and chips which was plentiful. Parking isn't great here - you have to park up on the pavement in the village.

We have been to the star & Garter several times over the years. Never been disappointed with the food. It was just as nice this time. Sadly though we were very disappointed with the service. Two quite young and smartly dressed lads in charge. They just seemed to want to sit or stand at the bar all night chatting to each other. It wasn't a busy night ,unlike the fox goes free we had passed on the way. We could of sat in or out but chose in. Could not help but notice on our way in from the garden an ashtray full of cigarette ends could of been emptied hours ago. One of our glasses was not as clean as you would like. The bottle of wine we chose was placed on the table in a wine bag,no offer to open it for us. When the lads stopped chatting and one got off his phone our starters and main course went very well. Our plates were taken, then we waited so long for a dessert menu while they sat drinking and chatting we got up and got it ourselves. As it was right next to them you would think they may of noticed. After about five minutes they still hadn't moved so we went back up and gave our order. The food was all delicious, but sadly on this occasion we felt as if we were in there way or they wanted to be somewhere else. It was a hundred pound meal ,but sadly we felt the waiting staff are letting the chefs down. Please try a bit harder.

We visit the star and garter reasonably regularly and have never failed to be impressed with the quality of the food. It is all prepared freshly with a good variety of choice. My highlight this last time was the dauphinois potatoes which were superb! Thank you!

Early evening meal at this quiet country pub. Beer and meals excellent in a very friendly pub. We had the lamb and the trout, both extremely tasty.

Never fails to provide fresh, interesting, good quality food and drink. We have visited here often to meet up with friends. Probably too busy on Goodwood days but great at any other time of the year.

Gemma and her team from Tiffins of Petworth provided the catering for my mum's 8oth birthday party in the garden. I could not be happier with the service they provided. The food was superb, delicious and beautifully presented, they were relaxed, friendly and well organised and the whole service was reasonably priced. They went to so much effort to make everything as easy and stress free for us and really were a highlight of the day. They exceeded our expectations and I highly recommend them. The Cafe is also lovely and has the same level of care, service and delicious food. A real asset to Petworth.

Visited here for afternoon tea. Welcome was ok, but then we waited for a while to see if there was a free table. Bizarrely no one else was in the cafe and the upstairs service where we were seated was almost unfriendly and you felt you were in the way. When we asked for a spoon for our tea we were greeted with a huff and puff… Gets good reviews elsewhere, but sadly not from us..

My wife’s aunt and cousin enthused about this pub so we decided to have lunch with them on a Thursday in November. The pub is signposted from the main road and is down a narrow lane to Chidham with passing places at intervals. The car park at the back is not so large so many visitors seem to park in the village. Virtually every table was taken which is always a good sign for mid week dining. The four of us had a variety off of dishes and my seafood tagliatelle was delicious. We were very impressed with the speed of service from the two lovely ladies and lively atmosphere of the pub. The portions are quite large so if you have a smaller appetite we would recommend their small portion menu. My wife’s cousin recommended the mussels which were not on the menu the day we visited so we must return to try them. A very enjoyable lunch catching up with old friends too.

We went to the Potager restaurant last night. It was Locals Night. The menu was imaginative and the food delicious and well presented. The atmosphere and service was dood too. The Locals Night is excellent value and we would highly recommend
