Really lovely lunch - the ladies are so friendly and welcoming! Food was superb, all freshly cooked to order. Sunday roasts all round followed by delicious puddings to share. It's a dog friendly pub and our little pooch was even given his own bowl of water and a blanket!

Stumbled across this place with my mum, and dog, and wife (not necessarily in that order...) was getting hungry so the clock was ticking and she's fussy! Fabulous barmaid, proper chief, real ale, great food, and jolly friendly locals, easy to chat to, dog friendly and a great garden. I wish I had this pub in my town! Cant rate it high enough. Great village as well - be sure to take a look at the windmill.

It was indeed the best Sunday roast we ever had. Pity that we have eaten there only once as the chef went on holiday.

Took my Mum here for a meal and we both had wonderful food, served by lovely staff in a great terrace area. Can highly recommend any meal on their menu as always of restaurant standards in a warm and friendly pub environment. Parking right outside too which is unusual in Thaxted!

We popped into this pub after taking a diversion off the M11 on our way to Stansted, due to heavy traffic caused by a car accident. Given the time we decided to stop for food before we got to our hotel so we were fed and watered (we have two boys who love to eat). What a choice if pub we made! We were very warmly welcomed by there bar staff and sat in a very cosy part of the pub. The food was great and exactly what was needed. Decided to go for the Rib eye steak and was not let down, but the star of the show was the peppercorn sauce! The rest of the family enjoyed their meals and we would recommend this place to anyone.

Really nice meal, service was good too. Hubby said his steak was one of the best he’d had. Nice drinks, can’t complain at all. Definitely recommend.

The room was well appointed and clean. Unfortunately due to the northerly winds the room was on the direct flight path to Stansted ( obviously not under the control of the hotel) The door lock was broken and so I put a chair against it overnight. ( I did report it )

My mother and I visited The Star for a meal on Saturday night which was absolutely phenomenal. Not only was the food amazing (compliments to Caitlin, the Chef) but the service from Abbie was equally great. Would highly recommend and will be visiting again soon.

We popped in for an impromptu visit on a Thursday, very glad we did! The waitress was working exceptionally hard and managing all diners expectations, friendly, chatty and service with a smile. Food served piping hot and freshly made - the burgers are one to try! We shared a portion of churros, large portion so perfect for sharing. All delicious and we’ll certainly be back.

Popped in last minute for Sunday Roast - what a wonderful little pub / restaurant. Friendly and helpful service, felt very welcoming and the food was really good and portions generous . Will be back soon, a little undiscovered gem.

Had 2 excellent experiences dining here with 2 of my children. The food was delicious, plentiful and served with a smile. Abbi our waitress went above and beyond and Nothing was too much trouble. We will be recommending to everyone. The Sunday roast, all I can say is you have to try it, but don’t have breakfast before you go. I went for an afternoon roast with my dad on a Sunday. The food was amazing, the prawns I had for a starter, I always have and love! Then I had the chicken roast which was lovely. We were welcomed in and served by two lovely staff called Andrea and Daneille, who were so warm and welcoming. It was great quick and friendly service and they helped us with anything we needed and checked in to make sure we were satisfied with everything. Overall they gave us amazing service and food and we couldn’t be more happy!!

We had a lovely Sunday lunch yesterday. We were 5 adults and 3 children, and the meal and service were really brilliant. The service was very friendly and efficient. The food was really well cooked and delicious. We would all definitely go to this very nice place again!

Stopped for a quick drink, in this attractive looking 'restaurant and bar'. Drinks were very reasonable. Sat ourselves at a table for 2 just outside what was obviously the restaurant area, so we wouldn't intrude on their main seating. Apart from a ceramic tiles and a pepper pot, the table was empty. Having settled ourselves, we were then (politely) asked to move as this was for the restaurant. We were advised other seating was available, so we ended up at a large, round table for 5-6 people! What a pity - made us feel very much like unwanted visitors! No reason that I can see for moving us. Pictures show our original table and the 'busy' restaurant!

Not been here for a while but needed an evening meal recently, spoke to Becca and called in one Wednesday. Shared a baked Camembert. Both the Sea Bass and the Salmon were excellent. No room for a dessert but they looked tempting. Note to self: must go there more often!

Visiting from London on a Saturday evening with friends whilst staying in Thaxted for the weekend. Service was incredible - all the girls were really lovely & couldn't do enough for us. All the food was completely delicious and prices really reasonable. Amazing halloumi starter and lovely steaks and pasta as mains. Highly, highly recommend!

This little friendly pub restaurant is fast becoming our go to for some of the best home cooked pasta we’ve ever tasted!

Wow what a meal. I had tuna steak on a vegetable stir fry bed and my husband crab linguine, it was just perfect. The staff were so welcoming and informative. Can’t wait to return. Paula & Les

The worst Sunday lunch we’ve had in years. The starters were good and the three that had pasta as a main all said it was lovely( above average) but the Roasts were awful. All tasteless apart from the jus. This tasted burnt and ruined all our lunch. Recooked roast potato’s and a pile of raw mange tout do not rock my boat. We thought we’d try dessert as one of us at no main at all but they don’t serve custard. Who has a crumble or S T pudding without custard. The two girls serving were lovely though and worked non stop.

This is a lovely pub, the staff are friendly and welcoming and cannot help enough. After having an awful experience at the The Swan Thaxted it put us off the pubs here, however after a long walk we decided to drop in for a drink and then looked at menu, booked a table and we did not regret it. Food was perfect, best chips ever as my husband said (and he’s sampled a lot!!) we regretted not trying this first as we would definitely have returned during our weeks stay nearby. The menu is varied to accommodate most tastes, highly recommend.

The restaurant is small and cosy, next to a traditional local pub. Limited menu, but all the food was really well cooked. Slightly on the expensive side (£12+ for a burger). Will certainly go again.

Beers were limited to Adnams on our visit, but there are a lot worse things to find in a pub. There was a wide range of food and prices available in the evening, and the staff were friendly.

This pub was taken over almost 12 months ago by an enterprising young couple Rebecca and Iaiin. Rebecca runs front of house while her fiancée Iain is the chef. Iain trained under an Italian chef and his pasta dishes are quite outstanding, They plan to marry this April 2018. The overall standard of food is excellent and extremely good value. The Star is now generally regarded as the best pub in Thaxted by far and has now built up a large and appreciative local following. It is busy at weekends and it is wise to book a table beforehand. I strongly recommend this pub.

The Star is a small pub set back from the main road. We made 2 visits over Christmas and found friendly locals alongside some visitors. Food was available and seemed to be to everyones taste We missed the Christmas Eve carols.which must have been a very cosy experience ! It cetainly is a very nice little pub.

I visited with a friend for dinner. We had main course and dessert. My fish and chips was excellent. The chips were crispy outside and fluffy inside, like chips should be. The fish was crisp and not greasy. The mush peas were mushy peas! My friend had a spicy chicken breast, but said it was dry. However, she too loved the chips. The desserts we chose were good, but I do wish pubs and restaurants would be a bit more inventive with desserts. Various cheesecakes from cash and carry might be easy and profitable, but we all know they are bought in. Service was friendly and prompt. Gin and tonic served in lovely fish bowl glasses. One side of the pub is definitely for drinkers, but the restaurant side is full of character.

We were tempted by their website and went for weekday lunch. The menu bore no resemblance to the menu on the web - more like a transport cafe (e.g. scampi and chips, sausages and mash). The specials, such as gammon steak, egg and chips were no better. Pleasant enough service but otherwise trading under a false pretext.

Comida en la estrella era tan buena, especialmente que toda la comida es fresca y el menú no es tan grande como cabría esperar, lo que significa que la comida es fresca cuando su ser. Todos los días es un diferente y su especial, es bueno para la imagen del restaurante.

No hay comentarios más pretencioso sobre pseudo francés basura en estafa los precios. Comida cocinado magníficamente la tradición inglesa, personal encantador y maravilloso ambiente. Bien hecho y volveremos.

First time here and apparently under new ownership. Good pub food and definitely recommended. Not too expensive and we found the staff particularly welcoming and friendly.Actual menu was small but there were lots of specials on the board.£40 for two of us, including starters, mains and a drink each. The only thing - and it is a point not a criticism - is there could be more than one veggie main on offerbut do give the place a try!We do not live in Thaxted but will be back.

We all decided last Friday to go out locally so we thought we would give the star a go as it's changed hands and what a pleasant surprise the food was to die for (I have posted some pictures) I had the Brie to start then prawn linguine and the white choc brownie for pud! Cocktail hour was fantastic, although I feel it may stop due to the amount of drinks some people ordered at once! While waiting at the bar it made the queue long and if it's stopped it would be a shame. We ate in the restaurant, quite a small room and we sat in the corridor so it wasn't the best of tables as we had the noise from the bar and people constantly walking past. My husband had the ham hock starter - tasty, but small portion. I had the baked Brie - weird consistency and taste. We both ordered the steaks and they were cooked perfect and delicious!Overall a good place to eat and drink, they did a great job considering they're new - thanks

Visited here Friday (St Patrick's Day). So nice to see the venue busy with a good atmosphere. Cocktails, real ale and wines - everything is there. Had a meal with a family member which was excellent. Easy choice menu with good quality food. Considering how busy they were the food was served promptly and hot. Shall definitely visit again and wish the new proprietors all the best with their new venture.

Visited here recently, for a birthday meal and thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon. The food was all brilliant, the roast beef was perfectly cooked, Yorkshires crispy, potatoes flavoursome, and the gravy was full of flavour too. Had macaroni cheese as a side order and this was equally as lovely. The service was a bit slow, but they were clearly understaffed and the staff that were there, seemed all rather new. Love to come back when the place is more organised and settled.

Returned following change in ownership and new proposition.Same beautiful surroundings, this time in the wood panelled restaurant away from the bar.Fantastic, attentive, friendly service.We all had roast pork for Sunday lunch and it was delicious, down to the home made apple sauce. It's rare for a village pub to do this so well. Perfect crackling, fresh, crisp vegetables and a fine reduction, packed with flavour. There was a real buzz about the place and everyone was smiling. It was easy to understand why.

Fabulous lunch. Warm and inviting atmosphere. Scallops and crispy bacon, roast with all the trimmings and the most wonderful gravy, followed by a homemade white chocolate brownie and ripple ice cream. What's not to like, try keeping us away.

Im reviewing the food only. It was excellent. Even my hard to please father in law said it was exquisite. We will be back. Only negative was that the waitress brought out our toddlers meal on a large scolding hot plate and put it right in front of him but we quickly moved it!

I cannot fault the food and if it weren't for the service and the ambience I would definitely go back. However it's not that simple. When the French waiter delivered our starters he thought it was acceptable to criticise (rather loudly & in front of other guests) our choice of wine (we ordered a red, I was having fish & hubby venison). Quite some time after ordering their food other diners were told that their choice was no longer available and were asked to choose something else despite being served their choice of wine which complimented the dish. I understand this happens from time to time in a restaurant but surely not at the beginning of the evening and particularly when the restaurant was only partly occupied. Then we ordered our dessert alobg with the recommended dessert wine to complinent it. The wine was served and then 5 minutes later I was told that the dessert was no longer available. I was the first person in the restaurant to order dessert so where had it gone? The waiter was about to remove my glass of dessert wine but "NO" I said. The restaurant was dark and chilly with no atmosphere. However the food was very tasty and I have to say that the fish soup is one of the most delicious I have tasted. Such a shame about the rude French waiter.

Lovely old building with exposed brickwork and oak beams, combined with tasteful but understated furnishings. Great, lively atmosphere with friendly but discreet staff. The crowning glory is the authentic French food. The scallops gratin was the best bit for me - so delicious. Lovely night out.

Stopped here on route for some refreshments with a large group. We were made very welcome, staff very friendly and couldn't do enough to please us.. Pub was very authentic, very well decorated in keeping with tradition.

Pork belly to die for. Everything else equally delicious - venison, risotto, moules. Service to match the food.

We've eaten here 3 times now. Once for a Sunday Roast, once for a normal lunch and again for a birthday dinner. The food each time has been ok, a bit try hard and overpriced for what it is. The last meal we had here wasn't great, the oil used to deep fry was stale and so an element of the main course wasn't pleasant to taste, and then the deep-fried doughnut/churros type dessert also tasted the same (I can only assume the same oil was used for both). Portions aren't very generous and when paying a premium I expect either a good size plate or alternatively an incredibly well executed and beautiful piece of cooking and flavours. Neither are delivered here. It's just ok. A shame as I think it has potential and the menu certainly sounds nice, and the staff and owners clearly care about what they're doing. It's just not quite right. I'm racking my brain as to what I actually ate and as I can remember meals I ate out years and years ago and my last visit here was 3 weeks ago and I can't remember, I think that says alot.I saw the business on a property website recently as up for sale, so it could all well change going forward.

We were honestly a little underwhelmed. While the wine was really excellent, the food didn't quite match the expectations, especially considering the price paid. The moules were not the best we've ever had and the accompanying frites were bland; I would have expected something a little more authentically French for this course. Based on this, I'm not sure that we'd come rushing back.

Visited with my family on Sunday, we were advised that The Star's roast was the best roast in Essex. I have to say I totally agree with this statement, the roast pork was super, the cauliflower cheese was the BEST I have ever tasted. The deserts were also very nice.Staff were attentive and polite, happy to help with wine choices.I will most definitely be visiting again.My only criticism would be there is not a set price for 1,2,3 course I feel this would be a good idea given the roast is a little on the expensive side.

For the uninitiated Jean-Pierre Coffe is the doyen of all things foodie in France and he would give this place a definite thumbs up!! The décor is lovely - the old wooden panelling has been preserved. The staff very friendly and the proprietor very proud of what he has achieved so far and what he intends to do in the future.We both settled for the moules which were certainly as good as anything I've had - even from Belgium. Price given the quality very competitive,Is on my list for a winter visit where I might just give the venison a try because that looks very tempting!!!

This pub is just beautiful and very tasteful, the Service is something else and they make you feel very looked after and important. The food was 10/10 very very nice and reasonable priced. Despite the raving reviews I read about this place I wasn't overly impressed. The friend we were with checked to ensure the dish he was having had no pork in it as he is Jewish and it arrived with sausage in! Scallops were overcooked and the moules had way too much cream in. Service was good and staff attentive.

From start to finish Marc and his team provided a top service. We ate from the fixed and the a la carte menu 3 courses each of well presented and excellently cooked food. We had drinks throughout albeit non alcoholic . Our sitting was 4 adult diners for a tad over £130 . I am surprised by some of the negative comments as our experience was significantly different and the restaurant was full. Finally, the building is old and historic but we still managed to get a walking frame through and you could get a wheelchair into the initial tables. Bon Apetit!

The Star is over priced. The restaurant, Owner and staff are nice, but the service is not what you expect for the prices they charge. The food is pleasant, but not great. There was no vegetarian option although a dish was put together (risotto). The portions are very small for the prices charged and the food is not even a wonderful gastronomical experience to make up for its size. My £25.00 Rib eye steak was over cooked as were the three little potatoe croquettes.They charge London price, but fail to deliver the food and value you would expect.

The service we received was absolutely awful. We were served by a young man on "work experience" to whom my heart went out to. He had no supervision or help whatsoever. The only feedback from the owner was to criticise him whenever he gots things wrong, which he did! The portions of food were very small and the scallops were so over-cooked I was not sure that they were even scallops. The staff refunded the price of our drinks and apologised but a birthday evening was thoroughly spoilt. We will not be returning.

We arrived early, the staff where very accommodating and friendly, seated us strait away and that was nice of them, although the first table they offered was very uncomfortably positioned, so they kindly and without fuss gave us a different one in a much better location . The decor is comfortable and relaxing, I like the menu layout and the suggested wines to complement the food its always helpful to have something new suggested other we tend to stick to the same wines every time. We ordered just main courses.The overall service is middle to poor, we was offered bread at the start twice and it never materialised, we felt rushed and was asked several times if they could clear plates when we hadn't finished, just wanted to take our time and relax. I thought the food was overly fussy, my pork 2 pieces varied between very dry as if it had been sitting in an oven for hours to the other piece was fine, severed with scallops that had been overcooked, my friends dish was a very strange scallop dish that she didn't enjoy. Cheese board was great.

Absolutely wonderful meal with my husband on Saturday night where nothing was too much trouble for our wonderful hosts and the fabulous French waiter, Dylan. Each course was fantastically cooked to perfection and served with a great bottle of Chablis. A really enjoyable dining experience which we will definitely be repeating very soon.

Came across this delight by chance and was very happy to be able to get one of the last tables. Menu was amazing, frogs legs, snails etc but also accommodated the less brave diner with feathered steak and mussels. I had the feathered steak with roasted garlic which was amazing and grilled mackerel as a starter. Wine was one of the best I had tasted in a restaurant. It was a merlot/Shiraz. Would definitely recommend.

My partner took me here for my birthday and we had a lovely meal in a very welcoming and professional environment. We had a bottle of Prosecco to kick off with which was nice but after having the bill ( I looked at it later!) I think it was a bit steep for Prosecco. The menu is all French food and not just in name - the real deal and to be honest, better than we have eaten in France. I had Salmon Tartare to start and then Venison bourguignon and mashed potato, Both were delicious and quite generous in size. My pudding, Crepe Suzette was just the right size and delicious, with pieces of orange inside. An excellent meal and we shall definitely be back. So good to find somewhere nearby that offers great freshly cooked food at a reasonable price and run in a professional manner.

Very pleasant place unfortunately draught beers not available today and we were only people there so lacked atmosphere but the young French man looked after us very well. Would go back if in the area.

Our food and service was outstanding. One of the best meal experiences we've ever had and thoroughly recommended.
