Called to make a booking of 8 people for a Christmas dinner, not only did was the person who was on the phone rude and slow to any response. He proceeded to leave the call to ask the Chef and respond with “we are unable to serve a table of that size”. How do they think they will succeed as a restaurant with that kind of attitude.

Visited this pub with my good lady and my elderly parents on the recommendations from a couple of friends. We weren’t disappointed. Really welcoming small remote country pub which is really worth seeking out. Staff and locals very friendly and the Sunday lunch was fabulous. And the young lady front of house deserves a special mention as she looked after us well. A great selection of home made desserts on offer, including a range of ice creams, all home-made too! On our drive home we were already talking about going back soon.

Started visiting the pub these last few months. A fantastic rural traditional pub, with traditional land lady and landlord. All the staff are friendly, and it is wonderful to know such great country pubs still exist. There is also a glamping site just down the road, Deer Barn Glamping, Hockworthy which makes a great place to stay, a 15 min walk away.

Staying locally 4 of us ate here last Friday night. The staff were really friendly and helpful. The ‘Specials’ board had lots of choice for all. All home cooked food and plenty of it. Great atmosphere with lots of locals. A great pub with lots of traditional character. Book a meal here with confidence.

The food is fantastic and massive portions, so go there hungry. Friendly relaxed service, good beer, reasonably priced.

We loved this small, friendly pub. We wanted a meal after a long day cycling. We enjoyed a pint or two of the local Otter followed by the shoulder of lamb with gravy, roast potatoes and yorkshire pudding, rounded off by home-made blackcurrant icecream. We went back the next evening. Very tasty. .... And a shout out to Roxy, the very beautiful puppy, who was also enjoying the local hostelry. This is a simple, traditional pub which is what we wanted, but if you prefer to eat in a sophisticated setting this may not suit you so well.

Four of us booked for an evening meal Saturday and weren't disappointed. All of the staff made us feel very welcome. The atmosphere was relaxing and we couldn't have enjoyed our meals more. There is plenty to choose from, a variety of tastes to suit all and beautifully cooked. Our friends who were visiting were very impressed. We live fairly close, so this is a place we will visit again. It's worth the effort of driving these narrow and slightly precarious roads. Thank you to all who work here your efforts are very much appreciated.

We visited as we were staying in the area. The pub is very pleasant inside, and just as a pub should be with friendly staff and locals. We are there, and the food was great. Generous portions and the salmon pie with filo was delicious. Home made ice cream is on the menu and is an absolute must! Sad that we can't return for another meal.

This pub won't be to everyone's taste, but if you remember fondly when pubs had real character, were genuine 'locals' frequented by real people who wanted to chat and socialise, then you should really appreciate this place. It is homely and friendly, with great wood burners in winter. The food is home cooked style, nothing fancy, but very tasty and with generous servings of the expensive things like meat and brussels/green beans that most pubs are too stingy with. The deserts, including upto15 flavours of ice cream, are a real treat. Prices are very reasonable, and there's plenty of walks nearby to get rid of that stuffed feeling. Highly recommended.

Wonderful food in a lovely typical English country pub. Three of us had the beef and one had pork. All of the meat was cooked beautifully and the crackling with the pork was the best I had tasted out! All of the vegetables (6) were also perfectly cooked. We could not fault this meal and although this is our third visit to this pub we had never done Sunday lunch. We are now thinking of booking for one of the Christmas meals. Excellent value for money.

Unlike another review we always check times and availability, so we booked for an evening meal. It is a very friendly and warm atmosphere and the food is traditional and very good! It is a small place, so booking in advance is advisable. The peeps at the bar also bring food to the table and sometimes the chef herself! If you have a smaller tummy and want room for dessert do opt for either a main meal or starter because these are very generous sized portions - including the starters! If you have a big appetite then you are well catered for! We have been back since and will go again.

Due to the good food reviews my friends and I decided to visit this country pub for a local experience. Upon entry the bar women, who we later learned was the land lord was completely dismissive towards us. When she eventually offered to serve us she was rude and extremely hostile towards my peers. Throughout our visit the atmosphere worsened to the point we felt we were not welcome. The worst bit part is the food was lovely but the experience ruined via confrontational and antagonistic attitude.

Most places in the country side serve food between the times of 12am to 3pm, & then in the evening between the times of 7pm to 10pm, if you are lucky! This is common knowledge, probably through out the UK! For some one who illegibly lived beside the Stapplecross Inn, & also frequented it since the 1970’s, surely must have known the eating times. They would not have changed much in the last 40 years! The people running the Stapplecross & their staff in my opinion, are very friendly, helpful, knowledgeable & very professional! I find it sad that some one who always probably gets what they want in life! have to tell lies and try to cause unneasesary problems to this kind of business in this climate, because they ”CANNOT” organise their own life/time! Amazing country food cooked here, & plenty of it, well done! Keep up the good work.

Very disappointed as couldn't get anything to eat in spite of arriving at 2.55pm when the pub hours are 12am - 11pm, calling ahead, politely begging, other diners still eating main courses, wouldn't even serve us a cold pudding. The chef kept coming out to chat to the diners, so her attitude towards us seemed a bit dumb! As a local who used to live next door, I have been going to the Staplecross since the 1970's. but probably won't bother again until she's gone.

Staying nearby we thought we would try here for an evening meal and I'm so glad we did! I called to book a table that afternoon as I had read previous reviews saying it is very popular and the landlady was great in accommodating a family of four. Our meals arrived promptly and were really good portions and so tasty! For four adult meals, drinks and 3 desserts the bill was really acceptable. You would pay far more in a main chain restaurant and the food wouldn't be half as tasty. I very highly recommend a visit!

Booked in for dinner at 6.30pm. Pub looked a little dated. The menu was quite extensive and even had a Thai dish. Bar service was quick and friendly but they seemed a little short of food serving staff. We had to return to the bar to get another round of drinks as there was no sign of the one waiter on shift. The portions were huge but a bit hit and miss. The sausages were good but the chips tasted a bit fishy. We gave up waiting for someone to take a desert order and went to the bar to pay

We visited here at half term with 4 adults and 4 teenagers. The pub was very quiet and we had pre booked as we were a large group. The Sunday roast was delicious with loads of fresh vegetables and all the trimmings.

Stopped off whilst travelling up the M5. We rang ahead to book but although fairly busy there were lots of available tables. Had the veggie roast which was pretty good. Friendly staff. Would definitely recommend.

Telephoned to book and said that we may be bringing a dog. We were told that dogs were not allowed in the dining room which was fair enough, however we could eat in the bar. As there were 5 of us we decided not to take the dog and I rang and told them so and asked to book the dining area. When we arrived I went to the dining area to be greeted by a rather large dog, (which turned out to be the owners,) which was slobbering everywhere as it walked around the room. I then found out that we had been put in the bar. We then had to walk through the dining room to where the food was being served and then back into the bar which was becoming busy. We were sat around a table in the middle of the bar with people constantly back and forth. It was a nightmare. Needless to say we won’t be returning

Nos metimos en esta tienda de la granja mientras estábamos cerca. Tiene una preciosa selección de quesos. El staff es muy amigable. Definitivamente vale la pena una visita.

Rude, arrogant and insulting to the extreme. Very poor service and felt very intimidating. The others in the town are far superior
