Not many decent drinking establishments in Bedford but The Standard is a nice place to meet up with friends. Live music was very loud when it started and drinks options especially craft beers are a bit limited but on the whole a decent place to spend an evening.

Drink was a bit expensive but I liked the music and the atmosphere. Would probably come back when visiting family again

had a good night out here with the boys good drinks. and we all have great time with the live music downstairs

Popped into the Standard in Bedford's High street for a lunchtime meal ordered the beef burger with fries, sat and the meal was brought to me in a timely manner, hot and very tasty, what a brilliantly run Pub, so clean with happy staff and though it was quite busy, people were having a nice time.

the food & drink was actually good,im giving a poor score for the DJ he ruined the night playing crap music,otherwise would give 3 starsu

Can get a bit rowdy, and always packed in the evenings at weekends. I have seen people thrown out for getting very drunk and starting trouble. Outside is the best area, but lots of smokers spoil it.

Robbed from my chair and treated like absolute garbage by bar staff when wanting help My car keys gone, everything gone then to be almost chucked out when complaining about said robbery, disgusting Unbelievable

Amazing music was played on the Sunday we were there. Very cozy and lively. Gorgeous rooftop terrace again cozy and sheltered.Drinks very reasonable and bar men very attentive and had a good memory of your order for when you came back to the bar. Would definitely go back a class pub!

I really like this place cause it is different than other pubs. I've been there several times and always service is nice and helpful. I like the idea of little patio upstairs where you can have a drink, smoke and just chill with friends. It is not very big but makes you feel like home.

Open mic night was still going on Sunday at 10pm. To be fair the people that went up to sing were very good. It made a better impression on me on Sunday compared to Fri & Sat evenings when I daren’t venture into it due to the drunken rowdiness of people here & at Yates over the road. The Laurel & Hardy statues only seem to be outside whilst the pub is open as they are not there in the mornings when I went past. Only 1 real ale, it was drinkable, but not the best by any means. 6 different pizzas all £6 each. Margarita, Scape Goat, Fun Guy were all listed as vegetarian. Wild Boar, Pepperoni & The Greek were the other 3 varieties. Toilets & bar terrace upstairs. This is very much a young person pub in terms of cliental I saw. A mixture of seating, tall, low, leather seats, wooden etc. If I come back it would be on a Sunday, based on what I saw on all 3 nights over the weekend period. Opens, Mon – Wed 11.30am – 11pm. Thur 11.30am – 1am. Fri & Sat 11.30am – 2am. Sun 11.30am – midnight.

First time in here Enjoying watching the last 15 minutes of England : Tunisia match We were watching at Yates - next door - however practically they decided no food ( only one of two food choices which we should have ordered before the match ) Nice surrounding Tasty pizza Staff are good

Brilliant night. The cocktail bar upstairs has friendly staff, looks great and sells fantastic cocktails. They even have a happy hour between 9-10. Nic and Freya make the best mermaid waters and blue lagoon- I will be coming again

Was such a good night after scoping the Bedford high street for a good bar and ended up spending the rest of my night there, music was for e eruone selerate floors, such a cute smoking area.Then the cocktail bar that they had upstairs was amazing. Introduced to a strawberry gin 🍓 had all kinds of ones, two lovely ladies being the bar with such good service. Definitely recommend😊😊

Had a great night on friday, Reuben was making cocktails and I wasn't sure on what to get so he sorted me out 2 beautiful drinks, this guy made my night, had great banter when we were speaking, he just made us feel comfortable and set me up for a great evening. I've recomended to so many people, 5 service, Will definetly come again

A great burger good beer and nice atmosphere with the added bonus that the pub is dog friendly. Had the build your own burger and it was hard to fault. One minor criticism is that the optional sweet potato fries attract a premium price

This town pub is the best. polite staff looked after beer and great food. Live bands 3x a week. Something for everyone. Even a Christmas party menu this year

As local from Bedford I have seen the Standard change managers and name a number of times over the years, as of recent since Rob Bartlett and his great team of expertise staff have been there, there has been an instant change of charisma and charm to the place. The food quality has gone up 10 fold along with regular and constant entertainment. Day or night, there is a welcome of friendly faces and chatter to invite you for that after work pint.. I would recommend this drinking hole to anyone from or out of Bedford to visit this high quality establishment.

We had a few hours to kill in Bedford over lunch time. Walked around and decided upon The Standard as it looked different. It is different, an interesting decor and a great playlist over the speakers. We had a lovely meal, the smoked salmon bagel with sweet potato chips was lovely and my fussy husband said, "well you can't go wrong with ham, eggs and chips." Praise indeed!

Had the pleasure of finding nice pub while on trip to Bedford last week only for drinks but food looked good, met by the manager sound guy from Dublin working is way round the world running pubs made us feel very welcome great entertainment and hospitality shown to us as only an Irish man can do. Keep up the good work.

I am staying nearby at the park inn as a coach driver. Called over for a beer before dinner each evening and was always welcomed. The staff are excellent. Great music on juke box also.

The Standard hosted a suprise party for my boyfriends 30th, we had a sit down meal then stayed late for drinks! They did a fantastic job, I was so grateful. The manager Rob was great from the minute I contacted him, very helpful and answered any questions while I was sorting everything really quickly. We pre ordered our meals beforehand and every single one was right, and everyone's arrived together which I've never experienced with pre orders, normally there's at least one wrong or forgotten meal! The food was lovely to, I had the standard burger and it was delicious. We had table service until 11pm and the ladies serving us were so attentive and friendly, they really helped make the night as no one has to leave the party to go to the bar. I also dropped off a load of balloons and banners and they decorated everything even better than I was expecting. The Standard itself is an awesome quirky pub situated perfectly to go out on the town later. I would definitely recommend hosting an occasion here, they pulled out all the stops for us and it was a brilliant night.

Querky pub, lots of room, service was excellent and food not to be beaten. Deserts were a bit of a let down as they only had a couple of things to offer. However, the food was fantastic.

Absolutely great atmosphere, staff always friendly, the pub itself is accomodating to all people, spacious enough to have your own quiet time but one step and you can be involved again, can eat if you please awesome food and bang on in town, definitely hitting the place again! !

I had a selection of starters here for lunch (3 for £10) and was overwhelmed by the quality and presentation. The homemade scotch egg was probably the best I have ever had! A huge well done to the chefs at The Standard. See you again soon.

Can't miss this one with Laurel And Hardy at the door. Quite old but modernised inside and sofa seating. Also a small roof patio for sunny days. Welcoming staff.

Always made to feel extremely welcome in this venue, which can more often than not be rare in a pub/bar establishment. Truly one of the only pubs/bars in this town to offer a comprehensive selection of beers and spirits, with a manager who so obviously knows his stuff when it comes to venue management. Will always recommend!

Definitely worsening since Wes and Elaine left some months ago. The place always had a charm to it in a spit and sawdust kind of way but it's slowly now getting to a point where the food and service isn't as good, the cleanliness is suffering as is the atmosphere. Even the basket of chips went straight on the table rather than a plate or board in between. It's a bit like watching a kitten on a rock in the middle of a rising river, you can see it coming. Poor moggie

Stayed at the Swan hotel who charged £10 for our dog to stay in our room- and not welcome in any other room so we ventured across to the standard and got a wonderfully warm welcome- including a bowl of water! The £10 for 3 light bites was good value for money-the scotch egg was a treat!! Lovely friendly staff and great beer- Proper Job was excellent. Well done.

We were in Bedford for the weekend looking around the shops. We saw this pub the seats in the Windows looked comfortable so we went in for a quick drink. The staff where very good offering my wife a taster of a cider she had not tried. There was a great selection of beers. A nice half hour in nice pub.

An excellent night out in what seems to be the busiest pub in Bedford.We got in there a bit late and by the looks of it a band had been playing. Everyone looked like they were having a good time..me and my companion certainly did. Good music and good atmosphere

A group of work friends and I came to the Standard for drinks to start our night off and one of the girls and I headed upstairs to the ladies bathroom. Just as my friend had walked into a cubicle and locked the door, a security guard came storming in and began aggressively banging on her door and shouting at her to get out. I asked what the problem was and was met with an angry reply that I was interfering and that men weren't allowed in there. I explained that she was in fact a girl and realised that he'd obviously seen her boyish clothes and short hair from behind and made the incorrect assumption. However, instead of realising his mistake, apologising and leaving, he continued to argue that it was her fault for the way she had dressed and mine for defending her. By this point, he had drawn attention to the rest of the crowded bathroom and demanded loudly when she came out of the cubicle that for the rest of the night, she must get his permission to use the bathroom again (!!!!).This was a disgusting and inappropriate response to a simple mistake, and caused a lot of needless embarrassment. It could and should have been handled discreetly and the security guard acted very unprofessionally.This was my first time in The Standard as a local, and this experience has seriously made the group of us think twice about visiting again and recommending it to friends.

Have been coming here for the last couple of months. It has a new landlord Rob. What a turn around clean, warm and a friendly welcome. Good place for all to visit. New menu sampled today and would recommend the light bites 3 for £10. A great town pub

I never used to visit this pub as on the few occasions I did the service was slow and the food offering was that of a greasy spoon.What a change, Its clear the change in management has had an effect. It is now my regular go to place! An excellent selection of cask Ale and tap lager and what a range of worldy craft beers in the Fridge.The staff now seem knowledgeable and keen to do well, where as in visits previously they were more worried about social media updates and what to do with their free time! They are well drilled, attentive and good to talk to! The area upstairs was always well worn and grotty, new plants, chair coverings and soft furnishings have made it feel like a little oasis hidden in the high street.There new menu is fantastic and the 3 bites for £10 is a great idea. I don't take it lightly when i say this, but they offer the best scotch egg I have ever tasted. I had this and friends tried the burgers from the 6 nations burger menu!! They have one to represent each nation!!! I know there chef is clearly very talented and has obviously being brought in by the new team...Well done the Standard.A credit to our town.

Arrived at this place on a wet and cold Saturday afternoon as we were on our way to a gig in Bedford. A 53 year old guy and his friends look for something different living their midlife crisis . The decor is so retro with lot's of interesting stuff to talk about and look at. Went to order drinks and, as I wasn't sure of which Beer to drink the bar person offered a try before you buy option. So after a few healthy samples of beer I chose the Tribute. As a bitter drinker trying pale ales this was an excellent choice. So good beer purchased we looked to order food. The menu had some Gluten free options which had drawn us into the place as my friend is celiac. I had the 3 for £10 light bites option and my 2 friends both wanted the fish cakes. Not often you get gluten free fish cakes when you are out. The food arrived in gastro pub style which to be honest I wasn't expecting. I was so looking forward to the scotch egg. I wasn't disappointed. A blackpudding style with a perfectly cooked quail egg in the middle. Absolutely amazing. The prawns were cooked beautiful but a few more were needed. 7 would have been better rather than 5. The chicken goujoins were proper real chicken strips. Again coated, cooked and seasoned perfect especially considering they were gluten free. 5 pieces of these bad boy chicken strips was too much though. Swap 2 chicken strips for 2 prawns and sorted :-D. My poor eating friend then offered me a fish cake. What a delight. I could not believe this surpassed the scotch egg. Again coated, cooked and seasoned to perfection. Chunky pieces of salmon and other fish a plenty. To be honest probably the best fish cake I have ever eaten let alone a gluten free fishcake. So dinner over and cleared plates, except for the extra sweet potato fries that we ordered, again beautiful, I went to the bar to ask about a taxi to the hotel. The bar was busy but, a bar guy saw that I wasn't just after beer and came straight to my assistance.A few well explained directions later we were at the taxi rank. This is a quirky, gem of a pub, in the middle of Bedford that should be on anyone's place to visit. Whilst I was at the bar my friend asked what time the place was open until in the evening and was told 2am. So taxi to the hotel, check in, get ready, get taxi back to town for the Sherlocks gig at Esquires, we were walking through a sleepy Bedford until we hit the high Street. 11.45pm on a Saturday night on Bedford high Street is a scarey place to be. Police vans everywhere and police everywhere. So we braved it to go to the Standard for a quiet drink. Or so we thought. What an amazing atmosphere in the place. The in place to be on a Saturday night. We went to the smoking terrace and took seats under the heaters. Drinks ordered promp and efficient from the terrace bar, which was busy, was impressive for a Saturday night. Sat down and talked for a while and noticed how many security guys were there. Guys in Bedford why does a pub need to pay so many security people? So a pub that knows how to make a place feel safe too. Continued talking and shooting the breeze so to say and noticed the clientele were on the more mature side which was good for me and my friends. A few games of fuse ball later we were on our way back to the hotel having spent a memorable day in Bedford :-). Thanks to all the staff for making this a perfect day xxxx and early morning ;-)

I had an amazing burger with chunky chips when I ate here . The food was great and the roof terrace was even better .The whole concept of a roof terrace in the centre of Bedford is so different. The staff are friendly and the service when you consider they have to come up to the roof ) is fast !!Brilliant meal ...

First time my cousins tried fish and chips and they loved it!!! Service was great, like the decor. Cute little roof top terrace and great service whats not to like?

In the centre of Bedford. We sat in the window which was open to the street, a little noisy but interesting for people watching. The décor was retro and reminded us of a student bar with many things of interest including Elvis in the bar. The beer was good, I chose a tasty pale ale; the price is more than I would pay at home but this is the South East. Our food was good, simple and hot. My wife's dish was presented a little unusually but she enjoyed her meal. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful. The building is interesting, a good place to explore.

A nice simple menu, well cooked using good quality ingredients and a wonderful atmosphere. The beer isn't bad either!!

Watch out for the big elvis statue. This place is fun with a group and a good starting point to a night out. Don't finish here though, it does clear out and when its dead you can hear the drips from the taps. Live bands playing are a nice touch as is the terrace.When its busy service is a bit of a nightmare. You do get the odd few guys trying to start fights but security is pretty good at booting them out so its not an issue. As a local pub its fine, what you'd expect. It feels dated though and elvis's skin is peeling a bit. Don't expect gastropub food, if you're after a spoons type menu though its just fine.

My friend and I regularly visit the Standard on our rare nights out. Like most people we have a few favoured places on our list when we venture into town and invariably we end up at The Standard. Often start there too. Usually we really like it and have previously left good feedback, having found it lively, fun and with a nice atmosphere. However, our visit this weekend left us disgusted and it was purely down to the dire attitude of the bar staff.Service at the bar, when it's busy, can be a challenge. We're not unreasonable and we do fully expect that it's not going to be instant and it can be hard for the staff to determine the "who's next" of the whole process - but to be blatantly ignored by a barmaid, was outrageous. She was downright rude. There were two blonde girls behind the bar that we saw, this one was the shorter haired of the two. She was even told at the time that she'd overlooked my friend at the bar and she simply replied "I don't serve at this bit", electing, it seems, to only serve the male customers, who had obviously arrived later. Even these customers were embarrassed, so much so that they offered to buy our drinks on their round. Her attitude was disgusting and for someone who is in the "hospitality" trade, she really should take a little time to look up the definition of the word. We actually went upstairs to the garden bar to get service, where a nice chap served us and something we requested wasn't upstairs, so he made a comment to his female colleague about it being downstairs and she just said "oh, yeah maybe it is". Fabulous example of team work there - how about moving your lazy behind to go and get it so that service can continue and the paying customers are actually prioritised. The other blonde girl wasn't quite so rude but gave a very dubious level of service later on too. The chaps behind the bar seemed fine but honestly, Standard, why recruit people to be in your most hands-on customer facing roles when they have such contempt for customers and customer service. Wasn't a good night but these are things that are so simple to fix and are completely free. It takes no effort or cost to implement a good quality of customer service and you do need to realise that customers will either frequent or avoid an establishment based on the service rather than the drinks, prices or entertainment. I'd rather go and spend my money on having a good night where my custom is valued, than make any contribution towards keeping surly staff behind your bar. Sort it out. Security staff on Friday were great, I'd like to add. We had an issue with some visitors from Scotland, clearly under the influence of alcohol (and perhaps should have left a while before), one of whom decided he wanted to pick a fight with us - despite us continually asking him to just leave us alone - a quick word with the security guy standing near Elvis to just intervene and get the chap to leave us alone was dealt with professionally and respectfully with a nice manner. The guy apologised to us and we didn't have another peep from him. Perhaps the security staff can teach the barmaids some simple courtesy?

A lovely pub with live music and a roof terrace for the smokers. Service can be a bit slow but that's only because it gets very busy. I like that the age group is a bit higher so that as a mid forties woman I don't feel uncomfortable.

We have in the past had issues with food standards at the standard but I can say without shadow of a doubt - all my issuesas a celery suffer have been addressed.Great meal - thank you

We went on a Wednesday, which is burger day, because that was what we were after.A very good choice of burgers, especially for vegetarians, loads of extras in the form of condiments, salads, very kind and helpful staff, great big squashy comfy leather settees.I didn't see any drunks or undesirables there and it had a great atmosphere (and an interesting jukebox!).Will definitely be going back!

I was searching for somewhere to have a quick lunch with a friend over a glass of wine; we had tried a few busy places and had no luck. I recalled that The Standard served food so we popped in, were served by friendly and ever-helpful staff, ate in the fabulous roof terrace and enjoyed a relaxed meal in the late October sunshine. Highly recommended for lunch.

Lived in Bedford all my life and pubs change all the time but finally found a pub that suits all ages without you feeling too old or too young!Staff top form.Roof terrace got great atmosphere and cocktails always top notch and not watery like m most pubs!Music to suit all. Not eaten here yet but definitely on the agenda. A warm,friendly, happy bar. A must visit!!!

This place has been transformed. Great bands are booked to play regularly. All the staff are friendly and helpful. I visit often and am never disappointed. Thank you for raising the standard of Bedford high st! (I don't think the person that wrote the negative review has been to the same place!)

Cheap & pointless decoration. Rubbish food. Bad beer. Dirty glasses. Useless staff. Full of the jobless in the day time. If you are a member of AA you will like it. The standard is very low. Another nail in the coffin of Bedford High Street.

Visited today for lunch, very friendly staff who took care of everything. Food was good and they even offered to make a salad which wasnt on the menu. Lunch time discount of 20 percent was fantastic. Good food quick service will go again and free sweets which was a great touch. The pub is fanrastic nice decor and great roof area

We stumbled across this pub which used to be called 'The Hobgoblin' in Bedford while looking for somewhere to watch the football and get something to eat.This place has real character, and we loved the terrace upstairs which we had to ourselves for the most part to sit outside, have a few drinks and watch the footie in what felt like someones back garden. Really homely.The food here is a steak and grill option and these are cooked to your specification. I really enjoyed the fillet steak and was just how I like it. The ice cream is deceptive on the menu and when it comes out it comes on a slab (i had the four scoops), the scoops are humoungous, and when you add a flake, it's a flake PER SCOOP! (I actually got given five!). This is a great pub. It's neither an old man's or a students place, it's just really unique. We really enjoyed our visit here. Especially in the good weather.

Not for everyone as no good pub should be, the staff are great and the food that they offer is really good, locally sourced and therefore an easy choice instead of the microwave technicians opposite, I honestly think that the burger is one of the best in Bedford. I choose to spend my money in this business since everyone is great fun and make the effort to get to know you. Its a sure stop each time I'm town even just for a coffee. The roof terrace is fantastic, tucked away from the high street and a lovely place to hang out. Overall what The Standard offers is exactly what I want from a pub, let alone one that is on the High Street!!! Keep it up guys!!!

I don't bother with many pubs on the High Street but have been here a few times with friends and had a lot of fun.It's got really eclectic decor and a fantastic roof terrace. They serve good food (burgers and ribs are excellent and from the local butchers), bar staff are super friendly and helpful as are the management.Audience changes throughout the day - it's more laid back in the day with people sat around chatting but at night gets noisier, no surprise: it is on the High Street after all.

An interesting place! I am not sure if the owners of this pub know what it wants to be. It is set out in a victorian / Georgian style which does not work too well. There are large statues of Laurel and Hardy and Elvis both inside and out. After 10 pm it becomes a nightclub!!!!I ordered a pint of Doom Bar and a dry white wine and both were warm which is not acceptable as it is a pub!!

Like the two guys who stand outside this pub, which supposedly wants to make the high street a classier place, this place is a laughing stock. They obviously do well from a less discerning crowd Fridays and Saturdays but when we went in during the week the real ale was awful. Full of sediment and cloudy - no apologies. The poor guy behind the bar obviously didn't have a clue about proper beer.

If it was possible to select 0 on the score options I would - with very limited food being served we had to wait almost an hour for cold stakes - it's not rocket science they only serve 4 items and they even get this wrong.If this was the only place in Bedford to eat - drive to another town....very very poor never again!!

I visited this pub at the weekend as my friends have not stopped raving about what a great pub it is. All i can say is WOW.......................as soon as you walk in you are greeted with a smile and a bit of banter, to then go upstairs to the terrace and forget your actually in Bedford. Its amazing!!!!I spoke with the manager to organise my birthday outing and the package she has offered me is out of this world........this pub has defo RAISED THE STANDARD!!Staff, atmosphere, DJ and ambience is fab!!!

We thought we would give this new pub a try on Saturday 12 October. We arrived about 2pm and were told it was a 25 minute wait for food. That was fine, we ordered - they don't take cards as it turns out - again,no problem but perhaps a helpful sign would have been good. We went and sat down in full sight of the bar.50 minutes later and my husband went to find out where our food was. No apologies, the barman muttered that they had looked for us upstairs but nothing else. 10 minutes later our food arrived - apparently they had been shouting to find us! As we were on the ground floor and visible to the bar, I found this hard to believe. The food itself was OK and we were offered a complimentary dessert - however didn't really have the time to spare any more. I don't think we will go back - it's quite cold and dingy, despite the PR about it being a bit funky. The tables weren't clean and neither was the cutlery. Best avoided.
