We came for a friend's birthday. Again it was lovely. Food was great and everyone enjoyed it. Which was nice as we recommended it to them. Staff are so much friendlier here than other places around

Came here with friends for dinner, food was cooked perfectly, hot and came very quickly, staff are very friendly and welcoming, will be returning in the near future.

The pub itself was nice, the toilets were clean and the staff were incredibly friendly and attentive. However, when we ordered food they had several items missing, which was disappointing and they really should have told us this when they gave us menus, rather than when we actually went to order because it meant that we had to go back to the table and look at the menu again. The food arrived quickly but was quite bland and tasted like it had been re-heated, which I think it had given how quick it was. After we ate we stayed for the New Year's party but were really disappointed. It was advertised as an 80s night, but the DJ played very little 80s music and didn't even play the big hits like Wham, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Duran Duran, Phil Oakey, Madness etc. He spent ages playing soul and Motown, then weirdly switched to some 90s dance music, which at least woke people up, but then went back to the soul and Motown again even though nobody seemed to want it. He didn't talk at all except to do the countdown. You would expect a DJ to interact with the audience to build an atmosphere and get people involved. I do also think that the staff should have been dressed up for this too. I probably wouldn't go back, because while nothing was badly wrong it was all just very disappointing.

this was a amazing time for me and my friends, we all got roasts and a dessert(chocolate cake) at the end, the staff were so sweet and the food was genuinely amazing, coming again soon.

Real nice place. Food service was as expected. Didn’t feel like much of a wait. Friendly staff who seemed to be keeping busy and not standing around. Food was very nice indeed. Will try the burger next time. Fish was light and tasty

I booked an evening Christmas meal, for a group of friends and myself, on the night of the Christmas disco. The layout of the dining tables was delightful, the Santa chair backs added a little something extra. The staff went above and beyond to make our evening special. They were friendly, courteous and extremely helpful. Everyone of us was very pleased with our meals. The portions were excellent and the food was delicious. The disco was great entertainment and a lovely mix of festive and well known pop songs. It was an excellent Christmas event. The only thing lacking was more customers. Well done all at Market Cross.

Very magical breakfast with Santa. This year they put in so much effort. My niece and nephew enjoyed it so much. Santa was really jolly and spent a lot of time with them. Breakfast was very nice

Awful, awful, awful - tablets were stickly, food took over 1 hour to come out, we have our Xmas lunch here for a work event ( 9 people) - poor and disappointing event - will try somewhere else next time

Extremely disappointed eaten here previously and been fine Brought family here last night to celebrate nans 82nd place was two thirds empty which was fine ordered food hour 20 minutes later still not been served numerous complaints to be told trainee chef they have no ovens so it took hour three quarters to microwave 7 meals then eventually arrived food was cold Good luck to anyone who have booked a xmas meal bring sleeping bag as it may be boxing day before you eat Will not be returning

Friendly and kind staff, although unfortunately wasted a journey here as they forgot to cancel the too good to go orders, so drove all the way only to be turned away with no food. Staff apologised but doesn’t change the fact that i now don’t have any dinner to eat and also wasted time/petrol

Found myself a fairly quiet little corner here today for a lone carvery. Sounds sad but sometimes you just need 5 minutes. I sat at a clean table, ate some good food and experienced great service, from the waitress I spoke to, to the lady serving at the carvery. Well done Market Cross, it’s difficult to find good places to eat these day with staff who actually like their jobs and it shows. I will definitely be returning :)

We ordered fish and chips . Good taste , large portions and especially served hot. Staff was so good and service too.

I made the booking for myself and a small group of friends. We chose this location as it offered both a carvery and alternative choices of food. However, on arrival we were told that only the carvery was available. This was disappointing to 2 members of the group as the carvery has been of variable quality over our last several visits, but last night it was very good. When compared to other visits, the meat was not overcooked or dry and the portion size was spot on, the potatoes were plentiful and crispy, the peas were not like bullets, the stuffing was crispy on the outside and soft in the centre, the roast parsnips were excellent, and although we had to wait for the gravy to be refilled (only one pot was in use) it was not too thick and not too runny. The Yorkshire puddings are always good here! There seemed to be a shortage of bar and serving staff, but we could see that everyone was working very hard and yet they were still remaining friendly and professional. Although the service was rather slow, it didn't spoil our enjoyment in any way. Although there was a noisy quiz night going on, we were not part of it but we did have fun trying to answer the questions amongst ourselves. An unexpected bonus. All in all, we had a really pleasant night out in a nice friendly atmosphere and enjoyed good food. Well done and thank you.

Came here as an alternative when another restaurant had to close due to kitchen issues, nice greeting and shown to reserved table, but only discovered that due to their own issues only carvery was available and not the full menu which was not mentioned by the person who took us to our table. Carvery was very nice and would probably come back again for it - but not on a Wednesday night!! - do not remember seeing anything on the website saying there is a quiz night, and the volume through the speakers was extremely loud - perhaps you should have an area where people who are not visiting for the quiz can sit with the speakers off as it was actually stopping our table having a conversation a lot of the time, and as this was a get together to catch up after not seeing each other for about 6 months we wanted to talk and not get deafened by the quiz questions! The music round tipped us over the edge as it was so loud and we decided it was the right time to leave! Staff were nice and friendly, and it was disappointing not to have full choice on the menu for starters/mains, but will more than likely come back again, just not on a Wednesday! Also, over £8 for a large glass of wine doesn't fit in with the pricing in the rest of the pub ;o)

Review for The Market Cross - A Complete Disappointment We visited The Market Cross last night at 5:30 PM, spending over £200 in total (£100 on food and £100 on drinks), and it turned out to be the most frustrating and disappointing meal we’ve ever had there. What We Ordered: • Starters: Pâté (later swapped for mushroom due to unavailability), prawn cocktail, chicken wings. • Mains: 2 roast carveries, hake (swapped for roast due to unavailability), 2 Christmas burgers (kids’ meals). • Desserts: Sticky toffee pudding, banoffee pie, lemon tart, 2 kids’ chocolate brownies. The Problems: 1. Starter Delays: Starters took an hour to arrive. When they finally did, the prawn cocktail had frozen prawns and no prawn sauce – completely unsafe and unacceptable. 2. Kids’ Meals Delayed: The kids’ meals (2 Christmas burgers) didn’t arrive until 7:30 PM, meaning we couldn’t even go up for our carvery until then. 3. Carvery Quality: When we eventually got our carvery, it was awful. The meat was dry, and the vegetables were bland and overcooked. Having had over 20 carveries here before, this was by far the worst. 4. Ticket Problem: When my daughter went to get her carvery, staff questioned her ticket and refused to serve her until they checked with the bar. This was unnecessary, humiliating, and upsetting for her. 5. Service Mishap: While clearing the table, a server accidentally spilled the prawn cocktail into both of the kids’ meals, leaving them inedible. 6. Desserts Mismanaged: Lauren brought out the kids’ desserts but told us that the adults’ desserts would take longer as the kitchen was “busy.” The restaurant wasn’t busy at all, and despite waiting, no adult desserts were ever served. 7. Minimal Apology: Lauren was clearly trying her best to manage the chaos and even offered a free shot as an apology. However, this was nowhere near enough to compensate for the disastrous service and meal. We spent over £200 on what ended up being a dreadful experience – frozen prawns, a dry and tasteless carvery, delayed meals, and no desserts for the adults. We’ve enjoyed The Market Cross many times in the past, but this visit was a complete letdown, and it has made us question whether we’ll return. Rating: ⭐ (1/5) Management urgently needs to address the food quality, staff training, and overall organization to avoid losing more loyal customers.

Come to market cross after a long time of not coming and wow it’s so much better the food the staff and the service I believe it was Tracy that served me and what a top job really polite and helpful definitely recommend

Much better than it has been over the past few years, staff are very welcome and accommodating, food is a lot better now than it ever has been ordered off of the main menu. Would recommend visiting, and if you have your doubts to give it another go

Update. Everything was lovely. Enjoyed birthday meal here. Made a fuss of us. Everyone enjoyed everything. Me and the family came for a birthday dinner on wed night, the food was so much better than the visit last year. We don’t live local and drove a long way so it was a lovely Suprise to really enjoy this meal. There was even a quiz which was £1 to enter and it was a real good laugh. I would come again and actually look forward to coming this time. We returned this week and of course it was amazing again!!

The staff were absolutely amazing. Heidi and Alannah were both very friendly and I can't thank them anymore for a great service. The accommodation was very clean and tidy, definitelya place to come with friends or family. The food was phenomenal and definitely went down a treat. Will be coming back here again.

Hunters chicken over cooked. Extremely chewy. Side salad, lettuce not fit to give a rabbit let alone a paying punter. Was told by Waitress on the bag the date expired today for the lettuce, but you could see it looked brown around the edges. extremely disappointed as the meals used to be very good there.

Came to the Market Cross today to treat ourselves to the carvery & it definitely filled a hole. The meat choices were very tender & the veg options were delicious. We also tried the new sticky maple pigs which were really nice. All of our order including drinks came to under £35. Great atmosphere too.

What can I say … Heidi’s a delight ! She makes the place a joy to be in with her jolly disposition and bright personality. All the staff go above and beyond to help and make the place a lively atmosphere. The food is always good and everyone helps to make the place a great experience.

Came for a meal as a treat with my parents as we were passing. Long wait times. Took an hour for even the starters to come out and only as we chased the order. The garlic mushrooms were like bullets. Food was okay but nothing great. Quite disappointing after waiting so long.

My girlfriends and I met here for a meal on a Monday night. It's a central point for us to meet. We had a nice meal but were asked to leave at 10pm! The closing time online said 11pm but by 10.15pm the person locking up was not happy with us staying any longer and was really rude, telling us we're closed now & even turned the lights off briefly to make a point. Not a welcoming place and we won't be going back!

Although it was a Sunday evening at 6.30pm I had expected more from our booking.I do understand that the staff had probably had a busy day but the place was dirty to the point of being unacceptable! The table was not wiped and under the table was filthy! We realise that this is late on a Sunday for a roast so some of the party ordered from the main menu and asked to be informed when these meals were almost done so that the party members having roast could get their food from the carvery and we could all eat together but guess what? No heads up! And as for the food that they cooked fresh? Well the fish was very poor,cold peas and no tartar sauce! The roast was apparently ok, though the veg was very dry! Overall,we will not be returning.

Visited here with friend during october half term week at lunchtime. When we arrived spoke to someone at the bar who said to sit anywhere. After settling ourselves at a table we went up to order a carvery each, which has always been available in the past at lunchtimes during school holidays when we have come. Only to be told no carvery til the evening. For an establishment that is known predominantly for being a carvery to not be serving it at lunchtime especially as it was the school half term and pretty busy made no sense. Also we weren’t informed the carvery was not available when we arrived, neither was there a sign outside to inform customers. We checked on leaving. Just having the roasted meats out for the evening service must be wastful as on a midweek day I can’t imagine the footfall is much more than the daytime was on that day. Although only having the dearer menu options at lunchtime might be better for your business it’s not for the customer. A sandwich or jacket potato & topping nearly the same price as a small plate carvery is not good value at all! I was also disappointed that my email to yourselves was never responded to regarding no carvery available ( & gave you over a week to respond) so I have written a review for all to read instead!

I went here last thursday and the food and service was great, i had order a coke and roast dinner and the potatoes were crispy and golden, followed by a chocolate cake, staff were so nice and i cant wait to go back and have the chicken strips again

Went for lunch. They have a lunch deal which I took advantage of . Had gammon 4oz with egg chips peas . Was very nice indeed . Followed by a choc fudge cake and custard that was also tasty could been a bit hotter but very nice .. both the missus and I had a meal pudding and pint pepsi all for under £30 . Bargain

We revisited as new management have taken over this place. All I can say is that the improvement is great. A tribute the obvious hard work and enthusiasm of the new team.

Absolutely waste of money and time more 1h waiting never again

We arrived for our 8.15pm reservation at around 8.10pm. There was no staff to greet us and we had to wait around 10 minutes for bar staff were free to speak to. We were then told that it was a 40 minute for food and the kitchen closed at 9pm. We were given the opportunity to stay and wait for 40 minutes, but bearing in mind we had children with us and it was already quite late, we took the decision to go elsewhere (the halfway house, where we had a very nice meal).

So I recommended this place to my partner and out friend because they were hungover as hell, well they had never been so I said that we definitely need to go. 3 hours after I said that we were sitting at our table, which we were late for our reservation but they grabbed us a booth which was comfy as a cloud, especially after all of us filling up in food and needing to spread out like a cat in the sun Potatoes, banging Meat, tender Peas, sweet Gravy, thick Stuffing, delectable Overall it was a stand up meal, 10/10 would eat again.

Do yourself a favour, save your money and go to McDonald’s next door! Gave it the benefit of the doubt after an awful lunch the week before, but because it was handy with the grandkids after popping into B&M with them, made the terrible mistake of going again. Super expensive, laughably actually, nobody seems to know what they are doing, food was FREEZING yet again, probably was the 40 minute wait for 3 kids burgers and chips, 2 baguettes that when they came out were 2 slices of bread!! I cannot stress how bad it is here. Unfortunately I do not complain, so they had no chance to rectify the situation, but I would have been waiting behind the couple who were getting a refund on their meals. For the love of god, RUN in the opposite direction!!!!

I've been to this restaurant on several occasions. I've always loved their food. The portions ate generous. Slight downside, maybe now and then they should introduce something new.

Update to previous reviews. Market Cross Dunstable has now improved so I’m pleased to be able to recommend the Carvery as it was excellent when visited on 6 August 2023.

Awful food, we all got served at different times. My meal was dropped on my shoulder by the waitress and I found my onion rings behind my chair on the floor. My steak was so burnt I couldn't cut or eat it. Won't visit again

I had a roast, cookie dough brownie and a coke and my friends had the same, i absolputley loved it staff was so sweet especially these woman called tracy snd kerry so sweet and would come back

Terrible service, good wasn't much better

Went here for lunch with family, was lack of communication by staff of an allergy for a 5 year old. The waitress was extremely close to giving the wrong pudding to a child with a bad allergy. the drink glasses wernt clean properly and the table hadn't been cleaned before we were seated. It was very sticky. The food was lovely and affordable and staff were very polite. Just allergy training and cleanliness needs to be improved to get a higher rating the next visit.

We visited for my partners birthday we had a beautiful 2 course meal the mains were absolutely gorgeous and the dessert were very yummy will definitely be back.

During a recent dining experience at your establishment, our group of 17 encountered several issues that resulted in a disappointing meal, particularly given the celebratory nature of the occasion, which was my grandparents' 80th birthday. Upon arrival, we discovered that two drinks were missing from our mobile order, and when we proceeded to the carvery, we were informed that only turkey was available, despite having made a reservation for a full carvery experience. Furthermore, when we finally reached the carving station, we found that there was no meat left, leaving us with only vegetables, some of which contained hair. As a gesture of goodwill, we were offered complimentary desserts, but unfortunately, one of the desserts arrived with paper inside. Overall, the dining experience fell well below our expectations and was particularly disappointing considering the special occasion we were celebrating.

Sadly when we arrived the stoves weren’t working so we were unable to have the long awaited carvery we were craving, however the food we chose was lovely, there was a minor hiccup with the wrong burger being served to my daughter but that was soon rectified by the lovely staff, overall we were happy
