Drove past other establishments so we could enjoy lunch at the pub we had seen earlier in the morning. The sign outside said the kitchen was open until 3pm. We arrived at 12:45pm only to be told by a surly female bar tender that we couldn’t get food for a while……. After ordering a drink I further enquired with her could we wait? Her response: “We’ve still got to get all these meals out so we’re not taking any further orders for food.” It was busy but nowhere near capacity. Rude, disappointing and unsure as to why we couldn’t wait. Drank our drinks and went back down the road to another pub. Unbelievable!!!!

I recently had the pleasure of visiting The Stag and found it to be an outstanding establishment with a lot to offer. The pub, built in the 1700s, beautifully preserves its traditional character while incorporating modern comforts and touches. While I understand that every experience can vary, it’s important to note that my visit was marked by excellent service, a diverse and flavorful menu, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The staff were attentive and handled every situation with professionalism and care. Regarding the comments I’ve seen on food quality and service timing, I did not experience any issues myself. It’s worth mentioning that if any concerns about the food or service arise, addressing them with the staff directly often leads to prompt resolutions. For instance, if there were any issues with the food, such as taste or freshness, bringing them to the staff’s attention whilst dining, could result in swift action to resolve them. I personally am a wine drinker and think it’s important to consider that bottled wine is sealed and should remain consistent with its intended taste. Variations might come from personal taste changes or other factors unrelated to the pub’s offerings. The Stag's ambiance, combining historic charm with contemporary amenities, made for a delightful visit. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a memorable pub experience!

We chose the stag to host a celebration for near 40 family and friends for lunch and drinks on Sunday afternoon. Rob & team were absolutely fantastic providing us a huge amount of space in the marquee in the garden. The staff were extremely accomodating of last minute food choices (and guests!) and the food service was super efficient, especially given the number of people. We had a fantastic time and our guests have been commenting on how good the food and venue were. The portions were huge, hot, and very reasonably priced. Would definitely recommend the stag, thanks Rob & team for your hospitality!

If there was an option to give 0 starts I would certainly do so! Arrived at 2.30 on a Sunday to an absolutely empty pub (that should ring some alarm bells already) Ordered the only meet option available-beef, without knowing the price as it wasn't even on the menu! It came looking sorry for itself and tasted awful...two slivers of meet wouldn't even feed my dog, the roast potatoes were definitely microwaved, hot on the inside and extremely greasy and crispy on top! Could use a chisel to get through them! Me and my partner counted 3 carrots on each plate, a few leeks and a lot of peas! Felt like everything had been slapped on our plates with 0 care in the world! Even the horseradish smelt and tasted very vinegary, suggesting it wasn't fresh. When we brought this issue to the staff, they seemed less than bothered. And to top it off, found more than dozen sashes of expired condiments on our and the table behind us! Some have gone out of date back in February! Scares me to think if they don't check the dates on them, what else do they serve out of date! No apologies or even a slight acknowledgement received upon our departure!

A massive thank you to the landlords & staff that made the wedding reception for my son and daughter in law run as smoothly as it did, considering we were incredibly late starting waiting for all the guests to arrive, and inspite of that, the kitchen were able to provide all the mix of different meals. The food was fantastic and the wine (chosen especially by the groom) was spot on! I myself went with the massive burger & fries which was great, I almost regret not choosing the salmon as it looked lovely, I couldn’t have hoped for any better, the whole day was perfect from start to finish, topped off with a great nights sleep and a banging fry-up in the morning!

I recently attended a wedding at this charming local pub, and I can honestly say it was one of the best wedding receptions I have experienced. The venue had a cozy, intimate atmosphere with rustic decor that perfectly suited the occasion. The staff was attentive and friendly, ensuring that everything ran smoothly. The food was delicious, offering a great variety of roast and buffet dishes that everyone enjoyed. The drink selection was impressive, with a large range of wine and craft beers. The live music added a lively touch, making the evening even more memorable. Overall, it was a wonderfully executed event that perfectly blended warmth and elegance.

We've had numerous lunches and evening meals at The Stag over the years and never been disappointed with the quality of the food and service from all the staff. We very recently attended a wedding celebration there and it was absolutely wonderful . . . the main venue was in a marquee attached to the pub. It was beautifully decorated in a lovely wedding theme, and the food served was first class. Music played all afternoon and evening either with a great DJ or a live band. Couldn't fault anything about the whole event . . . Thanks to you all for a memorable day

Just on the Stag website this morning to book for a meal this next week - just seen these reviews for the wedding event held this weekend - which came as a huge surprise as we were guests at a wedding at the Stag recently - in July - and found none of these issues with food / staff / attentive service - my own experience was nothing but complimentary and not forgetting the cask ale which my husband loved and kept so well here by the landlord I will be returning- hence my booking a table for this week!

I attended The Stag for a wedding, my review isn't anything to do with the wedding party itself as everything done by the bride was amazing. My review is solely based on the pub. The food at lunch time was delayed by a few hours even though staff made a note of who hadnt attended to hold the orders back and orders between each was very staggered. Dinner time buffet food was meant to be at 430 for children, it came out nearing 7 o' clock. When lunch finally arrived my lasagne tasted like vinegar, someone on my table had fish and chips, the fish smelt and tasted rancid, clearly not fresh, sausages and mash had a light blonde/ white short hair in it bearing in mind i have dark hair and my partner has none, ordered cheese burger without salad it had salad, lemon meringue tasted awful, texture wasnt nice, cheesecake tasted gritty. Staff not very friendly and were rude, one member of staff asked an elderly man (who has dementia) if he needed anything he said no and carried on walking and she scrunched her face up, regardless of who the customer is there was no need for the face expression pulled. I paid £20 for a sausage and mash and a childs ice cream, just to note on the menu its £9 for sausage and mash and £4 for any desserts, so an additional £7 which in no way seemed justified for the quality and service we recieved and to told it was that price regardless of paying for a child of adult. Choices of drinks are very small, wine tasted like vinegar (i have had both wines before and they didnt taste like that previously) nor was the white wine chilled. The pub itself is very dated. Steep steps everywhere which doesn't make it suited for people who struggle with walking

Please ignore the 2 recent negative reviews from people who went to my friend Dan's wedding yesterday, they're clearly talking out of their rear ends, here's the reality: Rob, the owner, and his team went above and beyond to make Dan's day as good as it could be. The food was excellent, I had the fish and can confirm it was immaculate, I also tried some of my partners hunters chicken and that too was incredible. The delay in service was actually caused by the guests turning up late and deciding they couldn't be bothered to sit down for their food. The staff actually had to actually throw some food away and cook the meals again because of this. The wine was actually chosen by the groom so it had nothing to do with the pub and everyone else who drinks wine said that it was nice so those complains are not valid. The staff were absolutely lovely throughout and, as I said before, worked incredibly hard to make the day amazing. The pub itself is a proper English pub. It does not look or feel dated at all, it's got the exact vibe you would expect from an English pub. It was built in 1766, so you cannot expect everywhere to be disabled accessible, in many places it's pretty much impossible to add things such as ramps for wheelchairs etc. So to summarize: The food was incredible, the staff were amazing, the pub as a whole is a lovely place and the negative reviews from the wedding are total rubbish. If I'm back in the area, I will most definitely be popping in for a meal or at least a drink again.

Attending a wedding party at The Stag was unfortunately a disappointing experience. The service was notably slow, leaving guests waiting uncomfortably long for their meals. When the mains finally arrived, they were mediocre at best, lacking the quality expected for such an occasion. The desserts were particularly disappointing, with undercooked, grainy textures, and poorly executed cheesecake and lemon meringue. To make matters worse, the staff seemed indifferent and dismissive of any feedback provided. Overall, the meal left much to be desired and did not live up to the celebratory spirit of the event.

We had traveled a long way and pulled off the motorway to have some food. When we asked if they were still serving, we were abruptly told yes but be quick as we stop taking orders in 10min. Having menus passed to us she then went on to say oh and if you order it’s going to be a long wait !! We felt that they just didn’t want our order, so just had a quick drink and left . Another couple came in a few minutes after us and were given the same welcome and response, again they felt awkward and just ordered a drink and packet of crisps !!! They are losing good business by treating travellers this way. We will not go back

Upon entering the pub, one can't help but appreciate the decoration that surrounds the space. The staff have a warm and welcoming demeanor, contributing positively to the overall experience. Our visit was timed for an early lunch, coinciding with the lighting of the fireplace. As a result, the initial ambiance was somewhat cooler than expected, likely due to the timing of our arrival in relation to the fire being kindled. This minor aspect, however, does not significantly detract from the charming and inviting atmosphere of the pub.

Booked a table for 4 on a Thursday lunch and it was surprisingly busy, a good sign Had a pint of Southwold whilst waiting for my meal. First time visit to this Pub. We found the inside pleasant and a good selection of beers and wines. However we were served by a young lady, who we found unwelcoming and very abrupt! There was no smile or polite conversation and at times, rather rude! We decided to order fish and chips and sadly this was about as sad as the bar staff! The fish was extremely watery and could be spread like butter! We did mention this to a member of staff, who said ,it depends on who's cooking in the kitchen! Clearly we visited on the wrong evening! I later ordered cheese cake and wished I hadn't. I have no idea, what was served to me but it wasn't pleasant! I have read many of the owner responses, to criticism of his establishment. So before you decide to attack another customer! Please veiw my review as constructive and not as another moaning keyboard warrior, as you called one customer in response!

By the man who asked us to move our van and the older female, Thankfully the 2 younger females( behind the bar )were more pleasant, the food was lovely even if they didn't offer a gravy boat with the pie, We didn't bother with desserts as felt we'd get elsewhere. Food excellent Employee attitude excellent Disabled attitude poor Landlord - O.M.G. Be aware front parking is reserved for Audis and other cars worth at least £30K. If you park anything else in sight of the road then the landlord will come out and demand you move it out of sight. If you are disabled and try to park your mobility van near the entrance he will come out a SECOND time to tell you to move it AGAIN. Note it is not because of size as our Vito is a SWB and fits inside a normal car park space. Oh and once inside the Landlady will happily watch you struggle down steep steps to the Ladies WC rather than tell you where the disabled one is. Note we chose here because it advertised disabled access. The food is excellent - well the main course is as we were so unwelcome we paid quickly for the food so we could go quickly. If it wasn't for the case of having to find somewhere to eat off the A14 we would have just walked out. But disabled people have to put up and "make do" often even in this "enlightened" age. This would be a really nice place if it was run by the employees themselves and no it wasn't busy; we were actually there at opening time :-(

Another good Chinese takeaway in Daventry. Always a friendly & pleasant greeting with easy parking. I usually collect, so can't comment on the delivery service. The food I sampled below (April-June)... [33a] Mixed Vegetable Chow Mein: Rammed full of Medium egg noodles, half mushrooms, green peppers, baby corns, carrot circles, occasional Beansprout, bamboo shoots and water chestnuts in a light soy glaze , served in a DEEP Container. [41] Special Curry with Fried Rice: Plenty of small pink Prawns, chicken chucks, half mushrooms, soft and succulent sliced Chinese Roast Pork, small ham cubes, onion petals and peas in a thick rich, salty and spicy HOT ginger curry sauce (No beef?). [69a] Beef with Mushroom & Black Bean Sauce: Lovely sliced beef and full to the brim with BIG mushrooms in a Rich, almost bitter salty black bean sauce. Not that spicy, but very aromatic and tasty. [89] King Prawn with Cashew Nuts: Very Plain and ordinary dish. Simply, Stir-fried King prawns, cashew nuts, bamboo shoots & water chestnuts with NO sauce (a bit Disappointing). [124] Chinese Roast Pork Kung Po: Big slices of Chinese roast pork, onions, carrots, baby corns, green peppers, cashew nuts, bamboo shoots & water chestnuts in a thin, sweet and spicy Hot red chilli sauce 🌶 NICE. [128] Chicken with Spring onion & Ginger: Loads of succulent chicken chunks with BIG spring onions & carrots. Awesome ginger hit, without BIG ginger pieces. Simply delicious 😋 [Portion] Egg Fried Rice: A basic light brown rice with a few white clumpy bits, pleasant soy glaze and limited egg content. The meals were always freshly prepared, cooked while waiting (usually within 10 minutes). Orders were always correct, piping hot and reasonably priced. ☆☆☆☆ Gromit Stanley Rating: 70-75% GOOD
