Me and my girlfriend went for dinner & stayed the night in The Stag for my girlfriends Birthday this weekend just gone. We had the most wonderful meal, the portions were more than generous and tasted amazing. The drink options were endless, and the service was incredible. We had such a nice stay and the room was immaculate, such a nice cosy vibe and a really comfy bed! They had even blown up some balloons and given us a free drink at the end of the meal for my girlfriends Birthday which was super kind, thoughtful and accommodating. Really went above and beyond. We've been there once before for drinks but will definitely be back again for the food, and hopefully another nights stay at some point. Thank you to all the staff & owners for being so lovely and accommodating and making her Birthday very special 😊 x

Appalling. Over half an hour for our order to be taken, and a further hour or so for any food to arrive. My steak was reasonably well cooked but clearly not a good piece of meat as it was very chewy. Unfortunately at The Stag, the only opinion that matters is that of the chef and staff, not the customer. They refused to take this off the bill as 'the chef has tried it and says it's fine' (decide for yourself whether or not you think it's appropriate or hygienic to be eating food that has been returned). They also offered nothing in the way of knocking drinks or anything off the bill as way of an apology for the disgraceful wait.

Love this pub! Excellent atmosphere and food. We've been meaning to come for a while now and we were not disappointed. Very well decorated, traditional, pub with fireplaces. I could eat literally everything on the menu. We came for lunch so had a salad and chips to share. The steak was excellent and chips very tasty. Prices very reasonable for the quality and service was great. Would highly recommend this palace and will be back soon.

Opted to try The Stag for our son’s 30th birthday. Table booked by his girlfriend (6 in total). Food was of a very good standard & quantity so no complaints there. My wife ordered a nice white wine to accompany the meal. The wrong wine was delivered to the table & it was warm! Opted to keep the wine rather than cause any fuss & requested some ice to chill the wine. When paying for our meal & drinks, we were immediately asked if we’d like to leave a tip, before being asked if everything was ok! Please consider training staff to be more friendly & accommodating to guests. We had a nice meal but will not return, nor would we recommend. Maybe just a bad day to visit but past reviews seem to suggest otherwise.

5 off us arrived yesterday & they didn't have a table for us, even though we booked 1 hr before. 4 had beef roast & 1 lamb, the lamb was ok, the beef came out red even though asked for med / well , all 4 were very very fatty cuts off beef and as tough as old boots, roast potatoes dried out & Yorkshire puddings dry. Waiter had all excuses as to how you ask for it, ie rare, medium, well done... But did say its rump so not the best cut off beef..... ( buy a better cut of beef ) we did all have desserts which were ok, we will not be returning. And it's not the first time we've been, food before has also been ok..... ish not reflecting in the prices they charge.... Alot better places to eat out...

Booked 24hrs earlier, as we wanted to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary, and were told the kitchen shut at six (booked for five o'clock). On arrival at 4:45, were asked if we'd booked. The pub looked as if there was lots of room, but apparently not enough room for us inside, but that was OK because we accommodated by saying we'd sit outside. We knew what we wanted, so asked the young lady, and she told us she wasn't taking orders, but that she'd tell the chap who was. Once outside, we were asked by the young lady, what we wanted to drink, and ordered. After a further 15mins, no drinks appeared, so gave up and left. People who'd arrived after us, had been served their drinks with no issues. Sorry, but if I don't get at least drinks, with 25 mins of arriving, it's bad.

The ladies running the food however were lovely and gave great table service! How woman behind the bar who was part of the pub however was very rude, we were in a group and as we approached the bar to pay, ‘ I’m guessing you all want to pay individually’ with an eye roll… Too busy pouting, you are in hospitality, be more hospitable and give your customers a smile. They don't deserve one star tbh we are locals and we went tge day before our two days away and my husbands birthday he had a baileys and they charged my son 8.00 we didn't realise until he wanted another one! Baileys are 50ml and one shot is a double we had three baileys and they charged 23.00. The girl there refunded 10 pounds but we had politely messaged the stag on FB and the vile; condesending rude message we got was unprofessional and childish...so be aware of your bill when ordering drinks baileys should be 5.50 ish for 50ml not 8.00 and we had three 50ml shots.

Food was excellent, although quite pricey. Staff were great. If we’d been at the front of the pub it would have been 5 stars, but we were sat around the back next to the garden where they had a dj playing. Music was good and if I’d gone for the music I’d have been happy but it’s not what you want for an evening meal out with friends. Really bizarre thing to have going on. Booked a table online, arrived at the bar and waited a couple of minutes to be shown to our table. No menus were given so after a few minutes I got up to collect them myself. Other tables had menus - unsure if they were given them when they sat down, as you would expect, or had to collect them after being seated too. Drinks and food order taken - four Sunday roasts which arrived fairly quickly. The meal was okay but I think the vegetables had been sitting around for a while. I asked for Red Wine sauce with the lamb but it arrived with gravy. Asked for the bill, which was delivered but incorrect, nobody came back to take payment. I went to the bar to ask them to remove two drinks which were not ours - this took a while and there was no apology, which is disappointing. The roast was okay but the staff didn't seem to have much idea what was going on. Being local, we have stopped in a couple of times before for a drink but this was the first time for food, as we thought we should try it. In future we will go back to the Salhouse Lodge, which we know and love.

Spir of the moment decision to have a Sunday roast out lead us with friends to The Stag. Plumped for the lamb roast and wasn't disappointed. The meat was succulent with very little fat. Roast potatoes were very slightly over but still tasty. The red wine gravy was so nice and a great compliment to the meat. Everyone else went for the beef which looked great. All i will say is that one plate had a lot less beef on than yhe other two. Not normally a desert person but had to give them a look. The Oreo pie was delicious with a scoop of creamy ice cream on the beautifully decorated plate. Will have to go back and try all the others.

I was taken here by my family for my birthday in February. The food was great and so was the service. It is lovely to see that one of the local countryside pubs I've grown up around has been taken over and although turned into more of a dining pub it has still kept the character of the local community pub where everyone is welcome. Looks like a country pub from the outside but has more of a smart casual vibe inside. Food was to an excellent quality for both starters and mains. We both had the French onion soup and picked the salmon and chicken dishes from the specials menu. Was a little more pricy than we expected, the starters in particular. Our waitress appeared very inexperienced, serving tables in our part of the restaurant out of order, including our own, not being able to answer basic questions about the bar or menu, (whats the soup of the day for example) and being just a little skittish overall.

Have been several times for Sunday lunch, food is ok but always luke warm. The Christmas set meal was awful, steak was the worst I’ve had in a long time, I’ve also tried the cod and chips, in a nutshell don’t bother tasteless and under cooked. As others have said, we arrived 10 minutes before our booking, and were happy to wait at a high table with drinks until our table was ready. However, the people at our table would not leave, though the young server assured us that they had been asked three times. I find this hard to believe, but had to accept it. In the end, we were given a table in an outer room, which was entirely lacking in any atmosphere, and fairly uncomfortable, with glaring lights over the tables. This was an evening my husband's brother had planned for 4 of us, and had carefully booked it a week in advance. The servers are lovely, but very young and very inexperienced, and it seems there is little training given. We got our starters one hour after arriving, and when we ordered, a second server told us she had to see if the kitchen would in fact take our order right then, as they were 'backed up'. She came back and told us they would take it, and apparently we were to be very happy about this.. However, she came back 20 minutes later to inform us that our starters were now being cooked 🤷🏼 The starters were ok, though the scallops were tiny, and 3 of us had them finished in 5 minutes, while the 4th person struggled with her enormous salad and cheese fritters, more like a main than a starter. The main course I wanted had just sold out, and the server was apologetic about this, so I ordered red mullet on a bed of sauté potatoes with pancetta. We waited another 25 minutes for this course. My sister in law's fish crumble was dry, and had clearly been under a heat light for a while. My husband's prawn noodle dish was quite tasty, though there was far too much sauce for his liking. It was my red mullet that was shockingly bad. A piece of incinerated frozen fish, more bones than flesh, on top of a pile of burnt potatoes and charred pancetta (the same as were served with our scallops). This for £29. I couldn't eat it. In fact we all left most of our mains. When we were asked how the food was, I told the server that I couldn't eat mine. She assured me she would 'let the kitchen know'. I have no idea what that is supposed to achieve for a guest. I'm sure the kitchen is well used to hearing it by now, but nothing was done. In the end, we were given our initial drinks free - the drinks that we only ordered because our table was not available - but nothing else was forthcoming, not even an apology for a ruined evening which embarrassed my husband's brother very much. Cop on, Stag managers. These are local people who support your business, and I know for a fact that they will not be back. Increase the number of customers who won't be back, plus word of mouth, and what clientele are you left with?

Me and my partner went to the Stag in Salhouse for a Valentine's Day meal. The pub itself is nice inside, however, the same cannot be said for its staff or its food. We ordered the prawns on garlic-covered bruschetta, which was very good and left us excited for our mains. We ordered the steak with peppercorn sauce (£33) and the steak and kidney suet pudding (£18.50). When the steak came out over half of the plate was covered in clearly frozen cooked chips, not the triple-cooked hand-cut chips as advertised. The chips were worse than Weatherspoon’s chips, they came out anaemic and extremely potatoey, which are not the kind of chips you expect with the price. The steak itself was undercooked, medium rare was requested but it was cooked just about to be on the rare side of raw. When raising this with our server she denied that it was undercooked for our liking and argued with us for two minutes, making us feel like we had never had a steak before. This hostile server eventually took our steak back, still in defiance, and we had to wait for over 7 minutes for it to come back out by which time the steak and kidney suet pudding was going cold. The peppercorn sauce that we had also ordered did not come out and had to be requested, this took 5 minutes to come out. To say the steak was a disappointment for the price point is an understatement, perhaps the owner could think about lowering the price to around £20-£25 then the steak would have been ok value. The steak and kidney suet pudding was not any better, the steak inside was chewy and hard to cut through, and much sawing was required to get through a sugar cube size of steak. The mashed potatoes that came with the pudding had the consistency of Playdough and again looked and tasted like it was frozen mash not creamy or soft and fluffy like good mash should be it also lacked all taste, not what you would expect. When giving our thoughts about the meal with our server she again was hostile and did not believe us when the evidence was in front of her. Before this, we had run out of drinks and no one came up to us to ask if we wanted anymore, as a pub this should be standard if you want to make any money, this shows a lack of care from the staff members. Also, after we had finished how meals and made it obvious that we had we had server after server walking past our table and ignoring us it took an exceptionally long time for the plates to be cleared roughly 10 minutes or so, in an empty pub. Adding on to the lack of service, when we said our food was poor the server said ‘why didn’t you raise this with me beforehand’. This was not possible because she didn’t come to the table and, we did not finish our food making it evidently clear that the food was awful. The server then again, after some persuasion about the poor standard of food, took our plates to show to the chef. After speaking to the chef who was adamant that the food was 'cooked to perfection' we were given the starter for free and the peppercorn sauce, totalling £13. However, the service at this pub was shockingly hostile and the food was just poor for the price, there was no care from the chef who had packed up for the night. I would not recommend this pub to anyone who wants to have a nice meal with good food with a nice server. After reading many reviews there seems to be a theme with them and that’s the poor service, if this pub wants to improve customer satisfaction then some courtesy from the staff would be a good start along with some care for the food, they are serving at an up market price tag Londoners would be surprised.

The staff were friendly enough but had the inability to be attentive due to lack of them!! We waited over an hour for our main meal and then were told, when we asked for a dessert menu... sorry, the kitchen is closed! I thought this was a great shame as the food was delicious.

A mix of traditional and contemporary with great food. This was my 75th birthday treat and very nice it was too. Fully recommend the sea food crumble.

Well kept beer and excellent food served by great staff. What more could you want? If you make the effort to go there you will not be disappointed.

A bridge between traditional and contemporary. This gastro pub has a wow and relax feel. The food was high quality and the service excellent. I had the sea food crumble with a chilly beef starter. My wife had cod and chips. We will be back to try other items on the menu.

Expensively renovated pub let down by the offer. Only 2 draught beers. Good looking manageable size menu. I made a tactical mistake choosing fish and chips. There were poor for the price. Fish overcooked, dry, and seemed frozen rather than fresh. My wife's fish crumble seemed good but exhibited signs of being microwaved (inside significantly hotter than outside). Pretty good veg not overcooked. Service a bit negligent. Asked if we wanted a drink when seated but not offered menus and had to request later. Had to request bill twice. Poor layout. We were on a table for two in a choke point between bar, kitchen and "conservatory" room. Also to access both mens' and ladies" toilets you had to squeeze past other diners' tables Faint muzak thumping away in the background.

We had a fantastic lunch at the Stag. Warm and friendly service with a very decent chef cooking his take on the traditional pub food options. I would recommend the game suet pudding.

Very Friendly staff. Excellent food and service. Portions are generous and food is cooked and presented well. Good value for money, especially when one of their 30% offers is on. By far my favorite place to eat.
