The Stag in Maidstone

Played pool here last Monday, The chilly was on the hot 🔥 side 😮 I suffered the next day 🚻

Since sell off it's a different vibe. Not in a good way.

Nice atmosphere dice ,cards or dominoes being played in corner.

I haven't eaten here but a great place to pop in for a pint or whatever tickles your fancy. A lot of punters enjoy sitting outside people watching. I thought £4 for a pint was very reasonable. A nice change from the obvious chain pubs. Has been recently spruced up with a lick of paint on the front and back.

Not bad. Not great. It's a little bit souless, stuck somewhere between original and gentrified. With expensive pints.. so not exactly a go to place in my opinion.

Comfortable environment, good service, good cold beer for fair price

This pub is linked to very troublesome people, some of which are known criminals in the Medway and Maidstone area. Sorry to cut to the chase, but after a truly awful experience in this ‘establishment’ and after spending time with the police to give details of an incident that occurred here I feel obliged to leave a review and warn others in the interest of keeping people safe. Needless to say my family and I will not be revisiting. It’s a pity that places like this compound the issue of Maidstone’s diminishing reputation, when there are some very pleasant eateries and pubs nearby that have worked hard to restore it.

One of the many positives of the Stag is the local feel ! Yet, 2020 seems to the year of the fool. Seating outside and not overly populated inside, yet the doorman blocks entry as ‘ too many inside fella ‘ .FOOL New local needed

Previously known as the Sun but under new management for the last six months and what a breath of fresh air it is. Lovely old building, excellent real ale, open fire and live music on a Sunday afternoon. Not aimed at the younger crowd. Proper cozy old fashioned pub.

Lovely food and very handy for IWM

This is a great pub, really cosy & good atmosphere. The barman was so friendly. We went in for one but loved it so much we stayed for hours. I think this is the best pub in Maidstone and I will definitely be back!

Lovely little pub with a nice ambience

The drink was tops, however, the pub suffers from cellar smells, the sump needs looking at and the cellar needs a good clean out, and a negative air pressure needs to be applied to it. There are also toilet smells, and again a better negative air pressure needs to be applied to this area to contain the smells.

Good ale beer, local from Kent. Cocktails ok but a bit too much ice and lacking in flavour.

I think Maidstone has needed a real pub like this for a long time. A real nice ambient feel about the place. A cool owner coupled with superb staff who are always very welcome. Always fitting background music and the cool feel of a open fire crackling away.Fantastic

Called in for a quick drink, just to get change for a taxi home. Great atmosphere, excellent service and somewhere to definitely go back to.

My partner and i went for an evening in maidstone and ended up staying in the pub most of the night. I drink real ale and the brewer himself was there, a great friendly guy. My fiancee had a few (too many) cocktails suggested to her by Stan the barman.Really worth a vist. Our next one is a sunday afternoon session for live music ....bravo

After reading some of the negative reviews below let me say that the pub has changed hands in the last few weeks. It's now owned by Robin Smallbone of Rocking Robin fame, and the third addition to his puns in Staplehurst and Barming. It is now run well, very comfortable, and with a selection of Rocking Robin and Kent Brewery real ales. The young staff are excellent, friendly and well informed about their beers. If a beer runs out, dn't expect a "Sorry, nobody can change a barrel" nonsense. A super place which deserves to do well especially after some of the recent incombants. The other three favourites of mine? The Flower Pot, the Thirsty Pig, and the Rifle Volunteer.

This might only be a small pub but it definetly delivers. The bar staff and owner are all very friendly and knowledgable about the drinks available and don't hesitate to get involved with suggestions or conversations if necessary.The newly introduced live music sessions which occur on Sunday afternoons are also a nice touch which sees the pub become one of the most liveliest places in town at that point on the weekend.They aren't currently doing a food menu, but they do have a very good and popular cocktail menu!

Fantastic beers now it is owned by RockinRobin Brewery. Very comy and relaxed. Best place for a drink in Maidstone.

A very nice, dog friendly pub in a High Street location.

I went into this establishment on Tue the 9th July for a bite to eat with my wife when we asked for the lunch menu we were informed after making our selection that the meal wasn't available this happened a further five or six times needless to say that we had our drink and left disgruntled

Went in here last evening Sun. Ordered large scotch had to have it in a wine glass. Had to listen to foul mouthed woman screaming obscenities into her telephone. Bar staff did nothing. First and last visit.

Had a groupon for an afternoon tea at the stag, place was quiet but the staff welcoming, afternoon tea was delicious & plenty of food so cannot complain considering the price we paid, overal clean & friendly staff so will come again

Everytime I go to Maidstone, it's one of my first stops. Beautiful bar, great food and lovely staff !!

I went with a few friends for Sunday roast.One of the cheapest roasts in town but sometimes people would happily pay a bit more to have better quality. I mean, Roast potatoes that looked as white as Casper the ghost. Complete lack of seasoning everywhere. Boiled vegetables, no flavour what so ever. Just a sprinkle of salt and pepper , rosemary, garlic before roasting would have made such a huge difference worth paying a few extra quid and would certainly make people want to come back!

Best pint and atmosphere in Maidstone ,friendly bar staff

Called a few days ago hoping for a nice lunch and good wines as have done in past. Told the kitchen has been closed. The place was virtually empty and will not exist on drinks alone. Is this the end?

Unfortunately the manager here is a complete jobsowrth. After purchasing drinks from the bar, we were abruptly told we could not take one bite of our own sweet. Here with friends, we were planning on staying for the evening and ultimately spending a fair amount behind the bar.

Good atmosphere They serve some really nice beers and lagers, Good range of sprits, and coffees but no decafe The Sunday roas is worth a try. Nice size portions just enough. You’ll easily clear your plate. The staff are reallly nice and friendly.

Nice cosy relaxed vibe for a Sunday lunchtime pint. Smart and warm with log fire going, the cask ale was good as was the service though not busy. Very pleasant.

This pub/restaurant has a very attractive, and obviously old, exterior. It's a shame about the obviously modern painting and lettering on an upper storey, denoting The Stag. Inside, there is much that looks very old--a wealth of wooden beams, wooden panelling covered up with tasteful blue-green paint, and two fireplaces--but modern redecoration has created a rather affected impression. There are oodles of fresh flowers on the mantelpiece, which obviously signal effectively that this is a female-friendly place. It is popular with local "ladies who lunch".

What attracted me in to The Stag was Bagpipes playing and it's good music, good beer, and good food and friendly people.

Booked this place up after buying a groupon, booking was easy, when we entered I think the place had just opened as there was nobody else inside which didn’t bother us, the afternoon tea for 2 was excellent with more food than we could eat, it came with a glass of prosecco which was nice, nice venue but lacks a bit of atmosphere

Nice quiet pub. Guinness is excellent and they have a good choice of ales. Locals are always welcoming and the bar staff all very friendly.

A great pub, homely atmosphere and my husband says the best guinness in Maidstone. We were looked after as always by Stan..& last night met Said. HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL

Worst pub quiz I've ever been to. They collect the answer sheets in and never have them back out. There were 3 rounds of 2p questions and half an hour between each round so the quiz master could mark. And he only told us who won but not the scores until we asked for them. There were 4 teams and one team left before the end of the second round. The Food was okay. Bit small a portion though

Popped in with my son after a bit of Christmas shopping. Nice open fire, friendly bar staff and Leffe on draught, perfect pub to relax for an hour or two.

I was pleasantly surprised with this pub. It has a real cosy welcoming atmosphere. I would call this a PROPER pub ! Staff very professional and friendly. Eaten here twice (so far!)

Nice meal, well cooked, good service. Steak was a little tough BUT it had been cooked correctly, and had clearly been rested, so for me this is clearly a supply issue rather than a kitchen problem. Raspberry cheesecake was delicious. Would definitely recommend.

Visited The "Stag" for Sunday last weekend, it's a lovely old pub friendly staff and comfortable surroundings, the food was superb! and the service also, it's refreshing to find staff who care and know about the food they are serving, on the calender now for a regular visit.

I would have liked to eat something after work but someone of the staff ( without smile) told me to take off my hi-vis 'cause they have the dress code..i don't like the rude ways so..bye bye the stag

Friday night is supposed to be a Lobster & steak night... run out of lobsters, olives, and burgers an most of the desserts on the menu. Food cold and unappetising such a disappointment after the brilliant meal we had 5er in September.

Good beer and good place to meet friends

just been for sunday lunch, was quite late in the day however both staff on shift were friendly and welcoming. the manager's service was outstanding, went out of his way to make sure we were well looked after at all times. the restaurant was well presented and homely.

Me and the wife went along last sunday for a roast. The staff were very friendly and we were seen to quickly. There was quite a nice selection on the menu with some good sides avaliable. I had the roast chicken. It was very plesant. I wasnt too keen on the sultanas in the red cabbage but thats personal preference. Nice cosy place.

Very handy to the store after a big shop a nice coffee before going home to unpack maybe some dinner too if tuning late food is well nice all under one roof perfect m butler

A pleasant surprise to see how this pub has been renovated. A pleasant homely atmosphere and staff. We were tempted by some sea bass on the menu which was beautifully cooked and great value for money. Definitely worth another visit.

After a few nice meals here then an awful meal here we decided to try again . Ordered 2 different stakes(in my opinion one was not a rump and was more a 4oz than an 8) which took nearly half hr to cook .chips that were served were as cheep as you can buy and definitely not 3 times cooked . The sauce was stone cold .As a chef myself this quality food I would never have sent out in the first place . The menu sounds appealing but so far raw hard veg cold food overcooked meat . Such a shame as the manager was so nice just hope he can now turn this pub round to produce food to a better standard .

Don't eat here. Even though they cook fresh and the food quality is good the building itself is in a horrendous state of repair, it's overrun with mice and rats and the management clearly don't care. Feel sorry for the rest of the staff

Feeling quite disappointed. We had been recommended The Stag by a friend who had described as delicious but our food was tasteless. I cannot fault the waitress who was rushing around and doing her best. I wonder if it’s because the roast is served from 12 and we went in at 4. We have both been left feeling very sick.

We had a most enjoyable Sunday lunch at this venue. The service was friendly and efficient. The food exceeded our expectations in terms of both quality and quantity.

Very friendly staff afternoon tea was excellent

Arrived at this venue to find out this was booked for two when it was booked for four people therefore afternoon tea was done for two and topped with additional. Bread and only two scones were dry, cakes were flat. Staff were friendly enough was told they were short staff and had a new chef. This was a birthday celebration so very disappointed.

Very friendly staff and great Sunday roast

After a 1hr wait at The Stag in Maidstone I was disgusted at what was served. Flat coke, raw steak and the constant smell of paint. We left both meals uneaten and walked out after complaining to the staff. This is one place I will never recommended to anyone.

Just had the most amazing afternoon tea here today with my mum. More than enough food and really really lovely! Would definitely recommend going and would definitely go back. Very attentive and couldn't do enough for us. Even gave us boxes for our left over cake
