Opinions
We have stayed in this hotel and had an evening meal. Firstly the room, very nice and spacious with a very comfortable bed. I slept like a baby. The only constructive criticism I would have is to replace the seal in the shower or clean it deeply. And the meal was amazing. Delicious and presented well. As a vegetarian I ordered camembert fritters and they were crunchy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. Very nicely spiced. And for the main I had an aubergine gratin and it was to die for. Really yummy. The only feedback I would have is my watercress with fritters didn't look fresh and it wasn't vital to the meal. I would just serve it without. My husband had sticky chicken for a starter and burger for main and he was happy with everything. But to be honest for the price we paid it was a great meal. And the menu states calories for each dish, which I thought it was amazing.

Our 1st visit to this really nice country pub with 24 rooms available for short stays. Lovely food and a very nice fires on the go. Good range of food and ours was from the bar snacks menu and was excellent and filled a hole. This is for us ideally situated being just off the M5 by Exeter and a great place for a stop and some proper food.

Overall very Friendly and welcoming. Downside classic Uk food servings, as in small and in ramekin/ dishes on plates to ‘pad’ things out, and little substance to the lasagna which was mainly sauce. Breakfast disappointing, as extras like toast and porridge all over and above the cooked breakfast allowance on a three figure B&B package for the night, which seemed a bit mean IMV, but I suspect a growing UK trend.

My partner and I booked three nights at the George , planning to go and see some friends. Unfortunately the car we were driving it's clutch burnt out and we had to cancel the whole trip. We had been recommended we stay at the George, and after the problem with the car we had to abandon the trip and get the AA to tow is all the way back home to West Sussex, a journey that took us twelve hours. We immediately contacted the George and they told us we had to phone the bookings, which we did, hoping to get some sympathetic response. Instead we just had a rude reply, telling us there was nothing they could do as we had booked a particular price and there was nothing they would do. I am astonished at this response, particularly because a) we had been recommended staying there, and B) the circumstances were none of our making When we finally attempt a return we will DEFINITELY not be booking again at the George. The company on the phone were completely uncaring, and as a result we have lost £200. If either of us had died whilst we were there I assume the response would have been the same . I will tell the people who had recommended the George to us and suggest they change their minds in future.

Good pub food, very nice to find a dog friendly place in Devon! I would recommend this over the Dart cafe (next door) which is not very accommodating to dogs, or people! Booking: The initial booking went well, but amendments to the booking were ignored. On the morning of the visit I tried to amend the booking. I completed the online form which brought no response. I phoned the number on the website and was put through to the pub, but no one answered. I left a voicemail but no one returned my call. Despite having specified a dog friendly table on the initial booking I received a text on the morning of my visit asking if we were taking a dog. I was unable to respond (see above). Service: Clearly my messages had not got through to the person allocated to seat us. I explained the difficulties I had experienced but received no apology. We were left standing around until a table was finally found for us. We ordered drinks but I had to chase them up at the bar having waited for about half an hour. We were told that there was no draught ale as it was 'settling'. Having run a pub in the past, I know that this can only be due to poor management. Food: The food was acceptable. Not a great birthday lunch.

In its entirety, this zwas a shocking experience! Extremely in-experienced Staff who didn’t know what that were doing. Terrible service, really awful food. Unacceptable attitude by management or what posed as management! What made the whole shambolic experience worse, was that they blamed all the problems on us as the paying guests complaining! Absolutely dire! I will never again stay at one of these establishments!

It was not a good visit. Several of the dishes on the menu were unavailable. Our table was sticky. The waitress was overly-familiar. One of the young male waiters looked terrified every time we asked him a question, as though he didn't know what he was doing. Our desserts did not automatically come with cutlery - we had to ask for it. The waitress could not personally recommend any of the desserts because she hadn't tried them. However it was easy to book online, and the food was quite tasty. The chocolate brownie was very nice.

Friendly and Pub with a homely atmosphere 🌟 We visited the St George and Dragon in the summer holidays during quieter hours and was treated to friendly service and food that was well cooked and plentiful in portion, but perhaps lacking a bit of spice and flavour. We had the two courses for £16 which worked out as a very good deal for the food we had. The pizza was fresh and appeared to be homemade but had little toppings on top. The calamari was bland and the chips were not soft and fluffy and were rather chewy. We were left waiting for service on multiple occasions and it appeared that we had been forgotten about at the end of our meal and chose to leave as opposed to having another drink or dessert as planned. 🌟 Recommendations: Homemade Pizza ⛔️ Drawbacks: Sevice was slow, bland food overall 🦑 Squid Rating: 6/10 🌟🌟🌟/ 5 Stars

Three meals ordered, 3 times cooked chips were hard and not edible. Fish batter very dark, perhaps an oil change needed. Mac and Cheese, claggy, symptomatic of micro wave cooking. Prawns and Chorizo dish, chorizo was rubbery. Having had really good value food here in the past this was an extremely disappointing visit. The person in charge apologised profusely and did not charge for the food. This was gratefully accepted but doubt I shall choose to return unfortunately. Is it a new "Chef" , certainly way off previous standard.

We had a booking on Saturday for 6:30pm. Hardly anyone in the pub, now we know why... My mum asked for the lamb rump dish but that was not available, so she had to have fish and chips. We wanted rib eye steak which they had however if you wanted sirloin they didn't have it but that's ok because we ordered what we originally wanted. However, they didn't have peppercorn sauce either... on a Saturday evening. The steaks came out and 1 was a sirloin steak, but they denied it, they clearly don't know steak because the size, shape, fat areas and texture was sirloin. So we paid for a rib eye and got sirloin. Which was over cooked as was my 'rib eye.' The bearnaise sauce we had to have as no peppercorn was vile... I mean it was a hollandaise with tarragon put in it. The fish and chips my mum had didn't seem fresh and the batter was THICK to the point where she couldn't eat it because it wasn't cooked. We know the manageress had been supporting in the kitchen due to chef issues, but clearly no one knows what they are doing there. You pay alot for an awful meal. There's no care from the manager, my mum even cut her lip on a chip in the wine glass and although the waitress asked for the drink to be free for us, there was no sign of apology from the manageress or any presence of her. As a manager myself, I'd of personally come over to my mum to ensure she wasn't hurt. Service from the staff were generally miserable especially the faces on them. Except for Tracy. She was hilarious and I'd love to see her again. Unfortunately we'd been here pre covid and loved it so came back on Saturday as a treat when visiting my mum. But we will not be returning again, so many more pub resturants across Devon to try, you need to up your game.

Then bread straight out of fridge very cold . Next my son in law gets gluten free roast with tiny Yorkshire, smaller than children's . He is not gluten free . One thing after another . Staff came to take our order munching on carrot. I appreciate staff need to eat/take a break, but think this should be protected time, for the benefit of staff members, and customers. Staff seemed poorly informed about coeliac disease, and relevant menu choices. I wonder if staff are given appropriate training? My friends requested pints of Diet Pepsi, and I requested a half pint of soda and lime. My friends queried the size of the drinks when they arrived, , and we were told they were ‘large’, and ‘medium’, respectively. I appreciate this is a small detail, but this issue could have been avoided by informing us of the sizing when we ordered. My friend asked, politely, to speak to the person in charge, but no one materialised throughout our meal. My friends’ (Sunday roast) meals were cold when they arrived. This was addressed when staff were informed. We informed staff that we had asked to speak to the person in charge whilst we were settling the bill. Staff apologised, but did not offer to secure someone for us to give feedback in person. Consequently, this feedback is in a more public context. I appreciate that hospitality industry is short staffed, and appreciate staff turning up for work. It would presumably be better for staff and customers if appropriate education and training is given in respect of dietary requirements, drink sizes if the customer is unaware of the measures used in the particular establishment, the serving of food at appropriate temperatures, and protected break times for staff.

Do you seriously expect customers who order at 12.00 midday (we were one of the first to arrive) to wait until 1.30 for the main courses to arrive? After waiting for 90 minutes our 5-year-old was losing the will to live - and so were the adults. We then waited another 40 minutes for our puddings at which point we told them to not bother and just send over the bill. We had the same experience a year ago and we stupidly gave them a second chance. We won't be going back. Thanks for ruining father's day! Management, get your act together and get enough staff in the kitchen to justify the £30 a head charge.

Window didn't seem to shut properly and had mouldy edges. PAT test on lamps in the rooms had expired. Due to the kitchen closure breakfast turned out to be the choice of toast, cereal or breakfast bars.

Had a few minutes to spare with a Dunkerswell friend who suggested a coffee and cake here. It wasn’t what I expected. Terrific fare in a lovely environment. The Lemon Drizzle Sponge was delicious. Great vibe.

Used to visited the cat & fiddle once a month in the late 80s, early 90s with friends from our American car club. We had a reunion and although u der different ownership, the cat & fiddle is still a friendly, comfortable pub/restaurant to visit. The staff are friendly and chatty, and the food is very good. The only strange thing we noticed was last orders at 9.30, as they close at 10pm. They don't get much/any business late in the evenings, so they close earlier than many other places. Still, it's a great place for a pint and a meal.
