We were staying nearby in an airbnb and I booked a table on a Saturday night for myself and partners birthday, expecting it to be busy. We weren't wrong...there was a tractor rally happening and the pub inside and out was full of people, all having fun and enjoying the evening. We thought we'd have to wait ages for our food but no, it soon arrived. We had the best steaks we've had in a long time, piping hot and generous portions. We sat outside listening to all the jovility and loved it, great atmosphere. So much so, we went back the next night for another dinner. So quiet compared to the night before, kinda missed the ambience. Food was just as good. Well done to the owners and staff for a great all round pub and great food.

Enjoyed it so much we went back the next day too. Locals all chat to you and one lady who was painting let the children have a go at painting rocks, made their holiday! Lovely big beer garden too. We went there with a car group of 13 for lunch having pre booked the meals from a comprehensive reasonably priced menu and a 2 course menu for £10. Having chosen the £10 option we did not expect such generous portions and were pleasantly surprised that everything was home made and delicious. The chicken and mushroom pie was served with chips and peas and the quiche was served with salad, coleslaw and chips. (I didn't expect chips but ate some anyway). To finish we had the banoffee sticky pudding with ice cream. To say we were full was an understatement. The staff and service were welcoming and friendly. The fact that we appeared to be the only customers on a Friday lunchtime was a surprise when the food is so good, but its location is a bit off the beaten track.

We have been here 3 times over 2 camping holidays. The last time was 2 days ago. The blue sky meant the views over the valley were far-reaching and absolutely fantastic. We nipped in for an unbooked Sunday roast. Yummy is all I can say. The roast potatoes were superb, and everything else disappeared will equal gusto!! They serve great food here, and the beer is equally good. It is a little trek to find, with windy single lane roads, but this should be a definite must on any holiday to the Dorset/Devon area. On a fine day, this is a pub to visit with children (who can play in the field) and for adults to enjoy all the pub has to offer.

We turned up as a party of 6 at 2 o’clock on a Sunday afternoon with a slight glimmer of hope they could accommodate us for Sunday lunch. We weren’t holding out much hope as 2 of us are coeliac and of those is vegetarian. To our delight, they advised they could do a Sunday roast dinner and a choice of 2 gluten free mains for the vegetarian in our group. I had a delicious roast beef with gluten free Yorkshire and stuffing! There was so much beef I could have taken some home for my dinner tomorrow, and the beef gravy was to die for. They even made separate roasties for the veggie as their normal ones are done in meat juices. All in all, a really delicious Sunday roast with a chef who knows what she was talking about. We will return

I had a beautifully cooked belly of pork with the most scrumptious crackling, buttery potato mash and mixed veg. Everything was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The pub was open on a Sunday night and that on its own is a huge bonus as most pubs in Somerset are closed. It's a small pub but there's plenty of parking. It was clean and tidy. This was definitely a great find.

Two of us went for an early evening Sunday meal. The menu was extensive and the prices were very reasonable. The specials board had some interesting options including Roast Lamb Chump and Roast Belly Pork, which we ordered with creamy mash, mixed veg and rich gravy. Both dishes were delicious, hot and quickly served. Very friendly host. The B3162 from Winsham was closed at the railway bridge and detours are long and narrow, so best to approach via Forde Abbey if travelling from Chard.

Down in Drimpton for a week away the local pubs chef was on holiday so no food there! The squirrel was the next nearest! Ample parking lovely surroundings great garden and dog friendly! Beer was good limited variety but these are troubled times and every landlord chef manager has to think carefully about stock costs and wastage! Wanted something simple so 2 curry’s and 2 steak n kidney puds! They were all really nice the jug of gravy that came with was astounding, the menu catered for all celiac vegan and vegetarian menus! However one huge downside was no other mention of allergens, unfortunately I am allergic to all forms of celery and think as is often the case some variant of this was used in the stock! I saw the signs early on so dealt with it very quickly! So not writing a bad review…… The staff were lovely and spoilt our pup with treats! So much potential this place temptation to try and turn it into higher quality gastro pub will price them out of existence! We will be back I’m sure, but will be careful with my choices next time!

We came based on the nice reviews. Starting with the positives - lovely location, very nice interior and exterior, very clean. The staff were very nice. It's a dog friendly pub, and all the dogs were well behaved. They have a wide range of draught ales, lagers, and a good selection of spirits, with a decent cocktails offer at 2 for £12 (I didn't try any myself). Lovely open fire. I would return for drinks, but not food, which brings me to the negative. We both ordered burgers, we had the spicy one, since we both enjoy spicy food. The chips were okay. The salad was a bit plain with no kind of dressing, the homemade coleslaw was very chunky, but tasted fine. The onion rings were the cheap, frozen kind you buy in supermarkets. The burger was unfortunately inedible. We both picked the jalapeños out and ate those, the rest of it was a write-off. The beef patties had a very distinct taste and smell, they smelled off, and they tasted the same way they smelled. They were very hard and dry. I have a feeling they were frozen, possibly a fairly long time ago, or had not been stored properly for freezing and had freezer burned as a result. The taste and smell was strong enough that it made the bacon taste exactly the same, and the cheese was all melted around the bacon and patties too, so we couldn't eat that either. It was fairly horrible. When we paid, I did complain. The lady who served us was very nice, and apologetic. We explained the burgers did not taste nice, and that neither of us were able to finish them because of the taste. She went to speak with the chef, and when she came back, she said he told her it's because the burgers are spicy with hot sauce. I did have to insist that the spiciness was not the issue at all, given that we both ate all the chillies, I think it's fair to say we had no problem with the spiciness. In fact, it wasn't really spicy at all, at least not to my tastes. Jalapeños are mild. So she went back to speak to him again, and when she returned, she offered to knock one of the meals off the bill. I immediately agreed because I was feeling quite awkward by then. She then had some issues tallying the bill, and first tried to charge us the full amount. My partner had to correct her, but I'm sure this was a totally innocent mistake, as I've said, she had been nothing but nice to us since we arrived. I do think they should have knocked off the price of two burgers. Not full meals, we ate most of the rest of the stuff on the plate, but just the price of the standalone burgers on the menu, since both were inedible.

Having not visited this pub for some time, we were interested to see how it had changed over the years. It has changed, for the worse. The car park was full of young men in cars who didn’t seem bothered in moving so anyone else could get in and park so that was the first problem. On entering the pub, the rest of the young men were taking up most of the bar space, having loud conversations with bad language being shouted basically every other word., second problem. The bar staff were much more interested in talking to the group of young men rather than properly attending to anyone else. The music was exceptionally loud, in as much as you could not have a conversation with the person next to you. It is clearly a pub for this group of men, with other customers trying to have a pleasant night out, but it is made very difficult by the local lads and the bar staff only being interested in the local lads. They dominated any space in the pub with foul language and inconsideration for anyone else. We had food, which was alright, nothing out of the ordinary, but it didn’t make up for the awful noise and atmosphere. I would not visit this pub again, and really wouldn’t recommend it to families with young children, as they would certainly learn some words that they didn’t need to know.

Tried to find a menu on their website but it just said they don't have a set menu but when we got there they handed us the menu which was quite extensive so I guess they're just too lazy to put it on their website. I would describe their menu as cafe-style not restaurant-syle as everything comes with chips. We had scampi and chips and gammon and chips. The presentation was basic with no finesse. The food was OK but not brilliant. We had coke and diet coke from those dreadful multi-nozzle things but the glasses weren't particularly clean. This place could be so much better with not too much effort and they could start by cleaning up the car park and the junkyard beyond.

Hotel has a good location overlooking Lyme Bay with a nice garden to relax and direct access to the beach ( although via a steep slope). Our review is based on the £345 per night, dinner, bed & breakfast charge. The hotel in our view cannot justify these prices. It looks nice inside, wooden floors everywhere and staffed by very friendly staff. Very young ones. No sign of a manager. Our room (2) overlooked Lyme Bay, average size with a very small bathroom. Duvets on our twin beds too narrow. We stayed for 2 nights. Dinner on the first night was terrible. Tough meat and a selection of fish that was hardly defrosted. Asparagus ( in October?) that were not cooked. Terrible presentation. I suggest the chef goes to the nearby Victoria Hotel in Sidmouth to see how food should be presented. The next night was slightly better. For breakfast one has to do everything oneself. Get your own tea or coffee, not forgetting to bring your cup, do your own toast not forgetting to take your tiny plate with you etc. £345 per night! Parking is charged for at £10 per night and it is still a bit of a nightmare to park. When we booked a month before we had to pay for the first night upfront and told this is not refundable; it all seems a bit calculated at the Alexandra Hotel.

A wonderful evening. We received a very warm welcome and were impressed with the food and wine offering. The pub has transformed under the new management. As a vegetarian with allergies, I was very well catered for. The vege lasagne was delicious and presented beautifully. My partner enjoyed an enormous, excellently cooked quality piece of steak with chips, broccoli and salad which was again presented beautifully. The atmosphere in the pub was upbeat and friendly. I can't recommend the Rose and Crown enough.

Brilliant pub. Great bar staff and the owner keeps a good beer and a welcoming place for a pint and a bite.
