Stumbled across Broughton while we were travelling to Eskdale from Ulverston. We were really hungry and hoping to find some affordable lunch at a nice place as we were pretty tired from hikes and driving. This was exactly what we were looking for. When we entered, we were told by a table of ladies that everything on the menu is amazing, especially the ham as it is from the local butchers. My partner ordered it because of that recommendation and he loved it. I ordered a tuna baguette and expected the salad to be a couple of leaves but it was varied and delicious and a generous amount for the money. We even were gonna go back and take our friends but we left it too late in the day as they stop doing food at 3pm. I wish I lived near this place as I would go all the time, I was only sad I couldn't try all the other menu items such as the fishcake or mozzarella pesto panini. It had a lot of vegan and veggie options also which I luv to see. The place itself had loads of character, with old antique style furniture. This was a homely place with lovely staff, gorgeous food and affordable prices. Super happy, do go if ur on a lakes adventure looking for some great scran

What I'd read from other reviewers I'll echo here: Friendly staff & service Generous portions Inexpensive There are 3 pubs and 1 cafe in the town of Broughton. (Plus a new one appears to have just opened). With the #4 of 4 rating, I didn't bring high expectations. Nevertheless, The Square Cafe is a simple, unpretentious establishment that's trying to add new items to their daily specials that carries a universal appeal. So, you can't fault them for trying. The beef lasagna is more English than Italian. As is the flan, more British than Spanish / Latin American. The fish cake seemed to need more fish, but the chips (British version) was good. And the peas were garden fresh. The butternut squash soup was wholesome. My sweetheart enjoyed hers, I thought it needed more depth and flavor. I did love their baguette, which accompanied the soup. Our group ordered 4 entrees, 2 soups, and 1 ice cream. It totaled less than 45 pounds. And the portions were massive. Afterwards, we hiked about 2 miles and my body appreciated the fuel.

Absolutely fabulous place to eat. The staff were lovely with nothing being too much trouble and very attentive. The ambiance was very chilled and relaxed. Food was delicious, hot and plentiful, quality local produce used (I know cause I asked). Lovely menu with vegans catered for, cakes looked wonderful and a pot of tea for two was huge! Will definitely be going back, in fact, can’t wait to.

Ventured in after a long hill walk for cup of tea and some cake. We went through into the back room but thought we’d made a mistake and it was the owner’s living room as it had a rather ‘lived in’, somewhat disheveled look about it. There was also a lady sitting on the sofa by the fire (who turned out to be the owner) but she reassured us it was part of the cafe and ok to sit there. She also went on to explain she was soon retiring and someone else would be taking over. Ok, first the good: The young lady who served us was very pleasant indeed and we ordered tea and cakes (which was ok). The bad: While waiting we started to look around the room, which sadly didn’t look very clean. There was an old display dresser covered in thick dust, with a few collapsed old dolls inside that looked like they’d been sat there for years! The fireplace had all manner of rubbish surrounding it and if nothing else was a fire hazard! It all just looked very grubby, old and unloved. But the worst was yet to come… The ugly: I ventured to the toilet on the first floor, but rather wished I hadn’t! The stair carpet was filthy and on the first landing I had to step over dog bowls from which dog food had spilled out. There was also an animal cage and other random rubbish piled around. The 2nd landing had the door’s to the B&B rooms (- I simply could not imagine staying there!) and the toilet, which was dark, dinghy and very grubby - the picture completed by a tatty, dirty, pink towel hanging by the sink, on which I didn’t dry my hands! I think the owner is making the right decision in moving on - the place needs a thorough clean and a better still, complete makeover. It’s in a great spot and has huge potential but needs a new owner to love it.

My husband and I were holidaying in The Lakes and stopped of in Broughton for a visit. We came across The Square, the only cafe open on a Sunday in the village. We were meet by a friendly member of staff who welcomed us in from the rain. We ordered two coffees and two scones with jam and clotted cream. All tasted delicious. Everything is homemade! The decor inside looks a little dated and is in need of some tlc but the food is reasonably priced and delicious. Highly recommend visiting this little cafe.

Friendly, efficient staff, a choice of three soups, good sized portions and really tasty food. Pea and Mint soup and half baguette 10/10 also Tomato and Pepper soup 10/10 with a little kick to it.

Sat down at 15:40 yesterday, waiting to be served. Someone eventually came to take our order after a guy at the next table had gone to find someone. We were both looking forward to a fish finger sandwich, only to be told that they were no longer doing hot food. The cut-off was 15:45 and it was now 15:50. We popped in here for a cuppa but stayed for lunch. The cafe had 2 rooms - one had a roaring fire and resembled an old country pub lounge, the other was like a farm kitchen with tables to seat couples or families. We opted for the latter room. We ordered sandwiches and tea. The sandwiches were made to order, bursting with filling inside really fresh tasty bread and a lovely fresh and crispy salad garnish. The tea was hot and the little teapots held at least 3 cups each; these and the milk jug were good pourers with no spills - something you don’t always get! We thought the price was reasonable especially compared to another place we’d visited the previous day. I’d definitely recommend stopping here if you are travelling down the west coast of Cumbria between Whitehaven and the Furness Peninsula or if you are going near to Coniston.

Visited with my family for afternoon refreshments. We should never have gone in the place as we noticed it was unkempt as soon as we walked in the door, but it appeared to be the only place open on a wet afternoon in the town. We had drinks, toasted teacakes and a 'homemade' scone. On biting into the latter microwave-refreshed offering I was nearly sick when I found a long black dog hair actually baked into the scone!! I took it back to the kitchen showing them. The response was "oh, do you want a teacake instead?"!! No sign of shock response, no apology, nothing! The kitchen was a cluttered, messy, shambles. The room opposite had the door open - obviously the living quarters, it was a tip! Looked like it had been ransacked, with a big black dog laid in the middle on the only visible floor space. How this place hasn't been closed by environmental health, I don't know. I've worked in the catering trade for many years and know this place is very much far from any standards. Please someone get it inspected/sorted out. It's vile! Do not eat here!!

Although the reviews for the cafe seem good, the 2 rooms we booked for bed and breakfast could only be described as very dirty, including the bathrooms, carpets and furniture. Had we booked for longer than 1 night we would not have stayed. Having said that the owner was very friendly and the standard of the kitchen seemed ok so we did stay for breakfast which was good. However certainly not worth the money we paid, it needs a thorough clean before we would stay again and cannot be compared to Wallenrigg farm where we have stayed more recently.

Warm fires, toys for toddlers, welcoming atmosphere make this a great destination for walkers, cyclists and visitors in general. Full English was good though all had to be returned as the baked beans had not been heated. They were heated and returned to the owners (!).

Often call in for coffee or bite to eat. The cafe is mainly used by locals but the welcome is always friendly. Not a large menu but what they do they do well. Excellent value for money. My tuna baguette came with a full salad rather than the few crisps abit of lettuce and slice of tomato one normally gets. Also, important to me, good coffee.

The cafe was warm and welcoming, other customers were obviously locals but we received the same service. Staff stopped to chat not just take our order. The food was interesting and generous. Will no doubt return.

Called in for Sunday lunch time. Table was dirty - full of wet milk. A few flies about. Just an overall feeling of grubby. The owner said "Not a lot I can do about the flies" which is true, but left the table wet. Fridge in corner of room with cakes in, so when someone ordered a cake the staff had to squash past our table to get to the cakes. For the location it is in, the cafe really doesn't make use of its full potential. Shame really.

We took 2 of our grandchildren here for lunch recently. There were toys and games to keep them happy (our granddaughter learnt to play Draughts!) and we were asked if we wanted the children's' meals to be served sooner than ours as they were very busy but the children might be too hungry to wait - excellent strategy and much appreciated. The food was lovely and the service efficient and friendly. Well done and thank you.

Conveniently situated right at the village square. Nice and light inside with friendly country atmosphere. They seemed to offer accommodations upstairs, and the customer toilet was also upstairs. Staff looked like local young people hired for the summer, but they were friendly and competent. Food was very good.

Very nice cafe and scones with clotted cream a must. Reasonably priced and an ideal location with plenty of parking in the square. Staff were polite but we did have to wait a while to be served and go searching for a staff member to order. Only downside was the smell of burnt cheese coming from the kitchen.

This cafe is a real gem. Don't be fooled by the non matching furniture and cutlery. The food is traditional home cooked fayre, tasty and hot with an exceptional cup of tea. What more do you need ? The staff are caring, attentive and friendly as is the owner. They also have a lovable dog who is always available to stroke and pet but is never intrusive. For those who may cry out re a dog in a food sales premises I would say that yes, this is a cafe but once inside you will soon feel at home with the family (and the dog !). We had breakfast there several times during our one week stay in Broughton in June 2014. Well worth several visits - at least !!

Excellent home made soup and the best steak pie I've had in a long time! No pretention at all. Lots of locals when we visited. Some very interesting snippets of conversation. Service was "not rushed" but we weren't in a hurry. Dog friendly - which may not be to everyones sanitised taste.

Terrible customer service! The young girl at the till clearly did not want to be there. She was huffing and puffing at customers! Yes, it was very busy as yesterday, 15th October was a beautiful autumn day but I would think they would be glad of end of season trade! I could not sit down because they were so busy so opted to ask for take away coffee and cake, only to be told by her 'I'm not doing take away'. Really? The local co-op is closed for a refurbishment and they really could capitalise on that if they employed more capable, less miserable staff! Shocking!! Won't return!

Called here for a takeaway lunch, used them several times before. Service was disappointing to say the least. Not a please or thankyou from the ladies working in the shop - even when I pointed out they'd only charged me for 1 flat white! Previous reviews also highlight the fact that the staff are miserable, they respond but do nothing to address the concerns raised. Also, I would've thought that as u was the only customer in the shop on a very wet day would have been positive for them - obviously not! Not sure I'll return here.

Visited here with my Dad today. Asked for a tea cake and then a scone both not on the menu anymore. I had a bagel with salmon and cream cheese paid over £8 and that was it no sides, no even a bit of salad - didn’t taste great. Dad ordered pancakes in the end 2 tiny pancakes on a dish - still hungry when we left. Not great service either. Disappointed!

Stopped to have a tea, latte and a slice of carrot cake. Great service and a huge slice of cake that we shared. Great value for money.

Called in for a coffee and snack after our frequent walk along the bay and round back into Arnside. When this first opened I was a little wary as we are used to small intimate tea/coffee shops in Arnside. However this was our second visit and as we entered we were greeted by obviously the front of house guy “David”. Wow does this guy know how to do it Welcoming ,friendly, Northern (always a bonus). Had a lovely coffee and Hubby had a great crisp bacon bun. The vibe in this cafe/restaurant is great., modern but great service. We live quite locally and are encouraged to go in the evening now as well. In our opinion the best restaurants are always about the front of house and Crossfields has it right. Everyone in this place has a great view of our beautiful Morecambe bay.
