What a pleasure to come back to the Spitfire after 2 years. Had the Sunday roast which was very good. Both kids ate their meals which is unusual as they're both picky eaters. Service was excellent. Served by Jody. Atmosphere was friendly.

Came here last week, one blonde haired member of staff was really welcoming and friendly. I had a very nice bacon and chicken sandwich and a few drinks, a little on the pricey side, but the interior reflected, it's far from 'spoons by a long way. The outside looked well arranged, just a shame the weather wasn't quite the same!

Staff seems like too busy to serve, yet seem to have enough time to idly chat. It's a shame because it's the perfect location for office colleagues to grab a bite. But alas, we drive to West Malling centre as a result.

Modern bar, relatively good selection of beers. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, the outside area is great... Large covered and uncovered areas. Not eaten here but the food I saw that came out looked great, although looking at the menu ita at the higher end of the cost scale which is to be expected for the area. Came across a relatively abrupt bar lady who I think was a manager/supervisor but the rest of the bar staff were friendly enough.

Came to meet friends but there was a mix up and it had been rearranged and I saw messages late but I ordered a pint anyway! If I’m paying £6.40 for the privilege of having a drink then at least should be served in the correct glass. Also note to bar person a please, Thankyou or enjoy your drink would be 👌 but she had turned away as I said thankyou….

Booked for Sunday Lunch as a treat for our wedding anniversary. An absolute shambles. Waited 5 minutes to be seated despite several staff standing chatting at the bar only a few feet away,. Thanks to the young man who eventually showed us to our seat - the only member of staff who seemed to be interested in the cusotmers. Just when we got settled, were asked to move to a smaller table - because, we were told, it was fully booked. We mentioned that we hadn't simply sat there but had been shown to the table by a member of staff. This wasn't even acknowledged. At our new table, the water glasses were dirty, and there was no salt when we came to use it. When someone eventually arrived to take our food order, they did so in a very unprofessional and 'I can't really be bothered' attitude. Thought we'd go for the roast as it would leave us only needing a sandwich at tea time, Now, at 6.30pm, ordering a Chinese takeway. I had the roast beef - received two thin slices of beef, over-cooked and very fatty. 3 roast potatoes, a spoonful of mixed root vegetable mash, a small jug of gravy, containing lumps where it hadn't been mixed with boiling water properly, a yorkshire and a small plate of cabbage and green beans covered in pepper between the 2 of us. Wife opted for the pork loin, dry and and tough, no crackling and the same serving of vegetables. Pork was dry and tough. Waited 5 minutes for horseradish - luckier than the table behind who asked for apple sauce to go with the pork - they were told it would be a while as they'd run out and she was popping over to Asda to get some. All of this was topped by the same disinterested blonde lady who took our order on being informed that a customer had allergies, told the customer that, because much of the food was supplied to them, she's have to check the website for details of any allergens. An absolute shambolic experience, and at £21 for the beef and £18 for the pork, even if it had been properly cooked and the service staff even slightly interested, it would still have been over-priced.

If I could rate the service higher than 5 stars I absolutely would I arrived nervous with my 5 year old son who has autism and struggles in settings like this, but when he became distressed, feeling a little embarrassed and stressed myself I went to the ladies to change him and try to reassure my son, I was met by a beautiful lady who’s name I can’t remember because there was so much happening at the time, but she comforted me as a mum and reassured me it was all ok, was doing fine and that I needn’t be embarrassed nor should I apologise, I and my son had as much right to be there as anyone else, she gave my son a cookie and promptly helped us order our food at the bar so we didn’t have to wait in the louder garden bar, she was incredible!! Absolutely above and beyond to make us feel welcome and helped in ANY way she could, I will be back as often as I can with my son because of how accepted we were made to feel, even when he was upset she was unfased and just lovely, couldn’t recommend this place enough, food was incredible too! Fantastic food! We hadn't booked a table on a Friday night (it was a last-minute decision and went out on a limb). However, they were happy to accommodate us (3 adults 2 children). My son has allergies, which they were amazing at accomadating to they even adapted the menu so he could still have the exact food he wanted! The prices are a little off-putting when you initially look at them. However, once the food is put in front of you, the price becomes a distant memory! The food was tasty, hot, fresh, and perfectly portioned. My only suggestion would be to offer a bigger appetite option on the kids menu as the portions were a little small for children aged 8 & 9. I can't wait to return!

Staff is friendly and ready to help with choice. Overall atmosphere is cozy, tables are clean and the music is not too loud. You will find propeller in one of the rooms here. All the staff are very friendly and helpful, however the food was definitely not up to scratch especially for the price I paid. The burger was £16, which has gone up by £4 over the past two years, yet the food itself has decreased. The burger patty is smaller and the ranch sauce no longer comes with the dish. The chips were good but with the amount of bread in the bun it probably isn't worth eating them. Such a shame since when the pub was renovated the menu was amazing, however no longer is.

Went to the Spitfire after having moved back into the area. Haven't been for a couple of years. Well it didn't disappoint. The seasonal ale was Late Red which was rich and perfectly served. By the sounds of the bar staff, they take real care in resting it. Good job. And the food was the star of the show, I had cod and it was probably one of the best I've had. Hearty size, crispy batter, flakey fish. It was spot on. My friend had a couple of small plates, hot flavoured wings and squid. All of which looked very good. And the service was superb. We had hannah look after us and she was very attentive and full of conversation. The manager has been there for years and remembered me from before I moved away. He made a point of saying hello. Food and atmosphere are fine. It gets busy around midday and the evening as it's the only pub in Kings Hill. However the service could be way better! The food we ordered arrived 48 minutes after having ordered it. No-one pointed out the fact to mention to a family with a baby that they'd be there an hour, so we were stumped between having an hour's lunch from work and having to entertain the little one for almost an hour. Should they mention the fact we had to wait more than 20 mins for food, we would've gone somewhere else. And it wasn't even that busy with about 3-4 larger groups outside. When asked about the food 40 mins in, we asked to be put in a takeaway box as we couldn't wait any longer. Apart from a couple of apologies, no compensation was offered. Will go to a different place next time - not that the choice is that great in Kings Hill.

If you fancy a beer then ok, but don’t bother with breakfast. Admittedly there were 7 of us, but it wasn’t busy and the cooked breakfasts ordered were either missing elements, forgotten altogether or just wrong! Examples: Avocado and poached eggs with bacon was delivered with a couple of small slices of avocado and no bacon. Some Cooked breakfasts had tomato & hash browns, some didn’t. The baked field mushroom was spit into 3 & shared amongst various plates butter put on hot plates so became a sauce to chase around the plate & the poached eggs were very hard boiled. Coffee was also anaemic & tasteless. So I won’t bother going back to eat.

We went to this pub/ restaurant for a late afternoon meal. Three of us had been before (4 in total) Always a lovely atmosphere/ ambiance, same yesterday. We had made a reservation, it being a Saturday. We were seated as soon as we arrived in the restaurant area. We decided on main meals + a dessert. All the food and drinks were served well and where required were hot. There is the option to eat within the bar area, which I’ve done in the past, I can’t recall if the menu is the same if sitting there, but nonetheless the food is lovely. You also have the option of eating outside, either under a permanent canopy (heated in chiller seasons) or not, the latter being close to a small play area with rustic wooden climbing frame with woodchip flooring. There’s a small bar outside too, all in an enclosed area. Dogs are welcomed both outside + inside the pub areas. We like the nostalgic decor drawing on the past of the site at Kingshill, being an Aerodrome in the 2nd World War. Even though this pub is part of the Shepherd Neame chain it’s still individual in that respect. Our only query was, as to whether the chalkboard on the bar advertising a ‘deal’, was in fact just that? Photo attached. It read: ‘Frozen Margarita £10, deal 2 for £20’.

After spending the best part of £60 on a few drinks and some loaded fries (was already disappointed with how expensive the drinks were) the kitchen at The Spitfire had closed. One of the people in our group got a pizza from Domino's and we all still had drinks bought from the establishment.(we were tucked away in the corner of the garden, of no inconvenience to anybody) Within 1 minute, a lady who works there asked a bouncer to come and tell us that we can't have the food here - could continue to buy drinks, but not have the food. It had to sit next to us not being eaten. I would understand if it was in competition with them, however they were not even serving food.. What's next? Not allowed to smoke cigarettes that weren't bought there, even though they don't sell them? Very disappointing, senseless and one way to make customers feel unwanted. Very poor. And to add insult to injury, did they clear any of the glasses or empty plates all night? No. Won't be rushing back to this one

Held our staff summer party in the upstairs private bar. And again was a great night. Staff so helpful from booking to the event itself, they really look after all your needs. Special thank you to Joe, Josh and all the kitchen guys for all your hard work leading up to the night and at party. A perfect party venue 🎉

Long wait for food when itt wasn't busy. Was queuing at bar when narmams friends came in, he let them jump the queue and served them before 3 lots of waiting customers. Not a good impression as they all laughed about it.

The food was ok, service slowish but what was not great was the hassle of booking a table, no response on email, no one answers the phone and when we finally got there, we spent an hour blinded by the sun through a huge window without blinds. Come on Spitfire, it ruined the meal and even talking across the table was an ordeal.

We visited The Hengist at 2pm on Sunday 10th November for a family meal of 6 adults & 2 children. The decor looked amazing and the initially very friendly staff took care of our drinks and foods orders well, encouraging us to order extras like gravy and roast potatoes at this point as ‘in his words’ if we didn’t order them now we would have finished our meals by the time they arrived. Having had 2 rounds of drinks all arriving in good time we started to wonder when the food would come. 2 starters of scotch eggs arrived about 30 minutes after ordering but unfortunately the sausage meat part was raw so we let the waiter know that we weren’t happy to eat them. An hour later (so 90 minutes after ordering) we still had no mains, the waiting staff now seemed to be trying to avoid us including to order more drinks and we had to call someone over to ask if at least the kids food could be sent as they were now getting hungry. Soon after a kids pasta and kids roast beef (which had no vegetables whatsoever priced at £11) came out. Still no mention or apology of our wait on food plus a couple of us were now without a drink. 20 minutes later when the children had finished their meals and no check on our table or explanation for our wait on food had been given we decided we had had enough and we would leave, asking for the bill of what we had consumed. A bill arrived including everything we had ordered including the missing meals, missing extras, returned starters and £5 each for the kids apple juices which were supposed to be included in a kids meal as well as a service charge percentage of all of that on top totalling £300! As you can imagine by this point we were quite annoyed, so having told the waiting staff as such, finally an owner came to our table but instead of apologising or trying to correct the situation we were made to feel like difficult customers. We left having spent over 2 hours not eating any food (except the children) and still having spent £90 (a few beers, 1 glass of wine and 1 gin & tonic). I haven’t left a restaurant this dissatisfied in a long time. I understand sometimes things go wrong in hospitality but some communication, an apology and an offer of reconciliation perhaps in the form of some complimentary drinks could’ve maybe corrected this experience to not leave us feeling quite so outraged that we will not only not return but will also actively avoid recommending anyone to try The Hengist!

Wrote this review over two years ago. Best Sunday roast in the area. Fabulous belly of pork with crackling, home made yorkshires, fresh vegetables and simply the best roast potatoes. All brought be together with delicious gravy.
