Appealing pub attractively situated facing Putney Common and at the western terminus of bus route 22 from Oxford Circus. There are a few tables outside so you can sit and look out over the Common on a fine day. On the bar there is a great choice of ales, mostly from smaller local breweries. For me, a pint of Wimbledon Common Pale went down very nicely and with cask ales all priced at £4.50 weekday afternoons, reasonable these days for London, it didn't break the bank coming here. There's a decent menu, not huge, but with a good mix of pub staples like Fish & Chips and Burgers alongside some more interesting dishes such as Sea Bream Fillet or Chicken Milanese. Prices are reasonable, considering the quality. The service is good and staff are welcoming and friendly.

On Sunday around 3 pm, we came to the Spencers and waited to be seated. When we entered the premises, one member of the stuff a young male with a curly long hair looked at us and turned his back ( he didn’t even say hello and continued to fill up the sauces). Then another male member came, looked at us, also didn’t acknowledge us. After that a female I assume it was a manager also passed and didn’t acknowledge our presence( she continued to carry the food) We were clearly astounded why no one has bothered to come up to us and say even Hello. After being ignored after 5 minutes, I came up to the young male with a curly hair( who was the whole time next to the entrance but pretended like we were not there) and asked him if we could be seated. He said to me he would need to check with the manager so we were waiting but he didn’t even bother to come to the manager and continued with filling up the sauces. At this point after being ignored we have left the place not feeling like we are welcomed. Advice to the manager: train your stuff especially the ignorant and rude guy with a curly hair who does nothing just showing his attitude to the customers. Also the place looked very dirty, there were lots of dishes everywhere, but stuff didn’t bother to clean them. We will never be back again.

The Spencer has always been a great local boozer but recently it has gone to a whole new level!! The new decor and the management have really worked wonders. It’s now has a really cozy atmosphere where it didn’t quite used to have and this is down to the vision and ambience created by the tream especially Vasiliki who always knows when to light the candles and turn the lights down a little lower to create such a welcoming vibe!!! Really great job x

Here we go again! Different owners still no clue! Poor quality Prosecco, so you can’t order an Aperol Spritz, and now reverted back to the cheap brand of Eager Cranberry! Not to mention the quality of beers which have had numerous complaints! If they want more people in, then up the quality of the product! Sacking the manager for lack of sales at a quiet period of the year anyway isn’t going to get more customers! Plenty of other pubs in the area with better quality in all areas.

We are regulars here but hadn't been for a few months as it was closed for indoor dining. Went back last night. The menu is a bit smaller than a year ago (like many places) but still offers an excellent list of wines by the glass/bottle. We had 4 starters between us (Padron peppers, Salt and pepper squid, Butterfly King prawn, Buffalo Mozzerella) plus 2 glasses of Aussie Shiraz and Sauvigon Blanc. Friendly attentive staff and Covid precautions of a high standard. Look forward to going again

The Portion sizes have got smaller at The Spencer ..... but BEWARE the 10% SERVICE CHARGE which is automatically added to your Bill. Now normally speaking I wouldn't mention it - but if you're sitting outside, on the Common you are invited to pick up your own Knife & Fork & Condiments from by the door before going back to your table. The staff are unfortunately not attentive, & whilst we were there (table of 4) there were only two other tables of 2 people & twice I had to get up from the table to ask the waitress for items we needed. This gives me the impression that the staff are not being paid the extra service charge, if they were they would be far better. The food was average, I had a Roast Vegetable salad with Goats cheese & whilst the cheese was nicely melted, the vegetables tasted par-boiled & definitely not Roasted or succulent. Disappointing by Putney standards but I doubt it will change as they have such a huge captive audience & accept children & pets at all times.

Feedback on food would be as followsBread and olives - please change your bread as it is very dry and nobody in the group enjoyed it. Halloumi bites - excellent. Chicken wings - please make the sauce spicier as it's quite bland. Fries - perfect. The beer is good but next time we'll probably skip the food as it's not cheap for what it is.

After a short period our order was taken and I ordered the "superfood" salad with additional chicken while my wife had the soup of the day as she wasn't overly hungry, both of which came well presented and considering I was only having a salad had lots of flavour and texture in the dish.If we are ever in West London anytime in the future, The Spencer is one of the first places we will think of to return.Chris & Adele

I've come to The Spencer for several years as we live only 10 minutes away and, lets be fair, it is hard to argue against the fact drinks on the common park arent great fun when the sun is out! Plus, staff have always been friendly, and the pub itself is very nice. Yet somehow recently i've felt non-plussed. And the reason is it just doesnt seem to operate properly when you order food; we felt forgotten. Prices are in tow with others nearby so you need ensure you're at least equal. Food was tasty if not mesmerizing but we were about 5 minutes away from cancelling the order (30-40 mins after order at the bar) and heading to the Sun Inn where, despite long waiting times, you are kept informed of what is happening with your order. And sometimes offered drinks if the wait has exceeded time given. We'll be back again for drinks but, if truth be said, unless there's a special food festival or deal, we'd rather not risk it... With a pram and baby the little time we have to enjoy is precious. We're looking forward to speedy improvements!

Not having been in for 6 months, thought we'd pop in for a change. As it had been a nice day, it was half full, with more people coming after us as the light dropped and drinkers from the tables on the common decided food was a good idea too. Ordered drinks and then main courses of fishcakes and a 12oz burger with bacon & cheese. The food arrived and looked lovely. The fishcakes I was assured by my other half, tasted lovely too. I was asked if I wanted any sauces to I replied yes to ketchup and mayo. The waiter disappeared... After waiting about 8 minutes, I gave in and began eating my now cold soggy fries ( smaller portion than a small Mc D's ) After another few minutes I went on the hunt for condiments, finding ketchup and a bulk supply of mayo. I managed to get a small portion brought to the table. The excuse given was that "they were busy" ... Tucking into the burger I discovered the middle of the patties were undercooked ( raw ).As my other half had almost finished her meal, I couldn't be bothered ( if I could have got the waiter's attention) to send it back. Leaving the raw middles on the plate, it was duly collected by the waiter. He asked how the food was? I replied, that what I'd had of the burger was okay, but that it was undercooked and raw in the middle - which is why it was left on the plate. His response... "But did it taste nice?" Waiting another ten to fifteen minutes, no offer of a dessert menu came so manage to gesticulate for the bill. Overall, not impressed with £16 for a badly cooked half edible burger with approx 2 dozen shoestring type soggy fries.

The Spencer is a periodic haunt for me. It's been bought by various owners and that's left an indelible impression on the quality and direction of the kitchen. Sadly, it's slipped from former greatness and currently serves food you'd see in a lot of places but not at the quality you'd expect from a SW pub and certainly without the passion. The fearless desire to surprise and please once available under the same roof is long gone. The food, at its best, aspires to be OK. I believe you can tell how inspired a kitchen is by looking outside the mains. The kitchen's want to challenge you to turn down their stellar starters and sides but you can't resist. Not here sadly. The homemade soup is lacklustre: potato leek & Sweetcorn. It needs seasoning and something punchy like herbs or cheese to lift it or maybe a homemade focaccia. The game and pistachio terrine was also pretty bland, lacked chutney or pickle to give it a lift. The BBQ chicken wings sound better than executed: small wings with no distinguishable BBQ flavour like charcoal taste, rich sauce, sticky finger food. The tell tale signs of an awesome BBQ. They played safe with a cheap cut that needs investment to reap max rewards. Someone gave in after they decided to make it. Goats cheese salad arrives with a wheel disk of cheese originally perched on a salad. It's not misdescribed - it's just underwhelming. The chips are also a bit of a forehead slapper. It's nearly £4 for a one-ingredient side that costs next to nothing to make. The mark up on this is incredible given the total lack of investment in adding something like a flavoured salt, a homemade sauce to wow or triple cooking. Why should I pay this much for something that could go from "who cares" to "thank you for making an effort" with next to nothing effort and hardly margin dilutive? These bland beige potato batons epitomise the lack of inspiration and acceptance for mediocrity. The good news is the beer and ciders and wine on hand will satisfy most of not everyone. The service is also attentive, friendly and casual which is what you expect from a neighbourhood, dog-friendly pub. Putney & Barnes have a lot of offer and I'm trying to work out why you would journey down the lower Richmond Road to come here if you didn't already live on it vs going to Barnes or Putney High Street. You might want a few of their good drinks - then go home for a takeaway.

Living locally I have been to the Spencer a good few times and always found it a pleasant place to bring friends. Nice for a pint and chat and particularly so on a sunny summers day.The food is very good too and a step up up from typical pub grub. Only negative was on a recent visit we discovered that on top of the slightly expensive main course prices we found a a 'discretionary' service charge added which is never really discretionary unless one wants to create some embarrassment. We had simply gone for some casual food and ordered our drinks at the bar as we would expect throughout the evening. This is not a restaurant and as such adding a service charge for someone to drop our plates to the table seemed cheeky. Unfortunately it will make us think twice before going back for food.To end on a plus the bar staff are attentive and accommodating.

We're locals and would love to love the Spencer. In summer everyone loves the Spencer largely due to the outside space on the Common. Pimms flowing - kids running - what's not to love? Unfortunately though the food needs improvement. I want to love the Sunday roast but the gravy is like brown water on the plate (please I beg you fix the gravy - brown water does not make a jus) and the veges are either undercooked or taste like theyve been sitting all day. The desserts however are TO DIE FOR. The lemon tart gets a star of its own - I also saw the Eton Mess and the Sticky Date Pudding both of which got rave reviews. I really want to love it - please revisit your roast.

We've eaten twice at the spencer over the last fortnight. The first time there was a very long delay even though the kitchen was not particularly busy and the food was very unremarkable, just about passable. The second time the food was slightly quicker but we didn't enjoy it at all and it tasted odd. We both were subsequently struck with stomach bugs which we are certain was due to the poorly prepared burger at the spencer. Also the chips tasted mouldy which sounds bizarre but they really weren't right. Even if the food was ok it is overpriced. Best advice is - there are plenty of good pubs for food in the area, strongly don't recommend taking a big chance at the Spencer.

I really like the food and atmosphere here. I was going to write a review anyway following a particularly good experience, but I now note the review below about a rare burger so feel I should go into more detail! I love my burgers and steak rare so what they feel was awful, would be fantastic for me. That is a subjective review and it's hardly life threatening! So ignore that ridiculousness and read this instead! I've lived in Putney for 9 years but have been to the Spencer more in the last 9 weeks than I have in the last 9 years; ever since I discovered the new menu. The chicken is a large portion and well cooked so I'd recommend that. But my favourite meals on the menu are the Shepherds pie, the halloumi kebab and the burger. All are well cooked, well seasoned and of good size. It's really nice to sit on the Common in the sunshine and eat there but it gets busy so you can't guarantee a seat. But take a blanket for the grass and drink there and soak up the sunshine. It's one of the nicer venues in Putney with outdoor space in the sunshine. Worth a visit!

I went for a meal in the spencer, I ordered a hamburger and halfway through eating it (as there was a lot of sauces in the burger) I realised it was pink, bloody and practically raw on the inside. If my health or that of my family becomes an issue in the coming days you will be hearing from me.

After a lovely sunny wander along Chelsea harbour, caught bus 22 and realised this pub served lunch in Putney Common. Great! No kids underfoot, dog was happy and the bikes were lain on the grass.. I ordered succulent, well prepared salt & pepper squid. The portion were large enough to serve as my main.with a side of sweet potato chips (The other half had the roast lamb (lovely meal despite veg slightly overdone) Being near the main road didn't affect the picnic atmosphere and we really enjoyed our meal in the sun. It was not cheap but we're returning with friends because it was a perfect way to end our walk.

The last time I came into the Spencer was a couple of years ago in the summer. It was a busy summer weekend and it was utter chaos. The service was slow and the staff & ‘invisible’ manager were all over the place….we vowed never to come back!We broke our vow and gave it another go on another busy weekend a few weeks ago with some trepidation when we saw how busy it was again. But, WOW what a change!Rather than walk into the expected chaos of last time. We came into a busy vibrant pub with a great atmosphere, happy staff and customers, and a clear sense of order. No matter how busy they were the staff and manager had time to chat and laugh with the customers and provide us with excellent customer service throughout our visit. We ended up staying longer than expected and enjoying a lazy afternoon with good food and beer.I was informed the pub was run by a new manager and team from a couple of years ago by some of the locals. All I can say is keep managing your team with a smile the way you do, because you have definitely won us back as regulars.

The spencer is a gem in a fabulous location on putney common five-ten mins walk from the river but away from the bustle of putney. The food is high quality tho not cheap, extremely friendly and chatty staff and importantly very dog friendly. I came on a quiet Friday lunchtime and came back the following weekend for Sunday lunch when it was packed and booking essential but we had a great meal outside anyway. Will definitely be back again.

I was paying for 4 of us to have a meal in this pub before going on to football. When the bill came i almost had heart failure. The owners of this pub must be creaming it and probably paying the staff min wages. Food was OK ,but in relation to what it cost proved expensive. Still this is a monied area and most punters probably dont bat an eyelid regards the prices. A pint of beer with the added S/C was almost £4.50 a pint. The food itself turned up prompt and the staff nice enough, but all round this pubs prices are well over the top. That said good luck to them if they can get away with these prices which they quite clearly can. we however wont be returning.

I spent my New Years Eve in The Spencer. It was a fantastic night! The tables were decorated beautifully, the food amazing - generous portions and very delicious. The staff very friendly, smiling, professional and attentive. I loved the idea of keeping the dining and dancing areas separate. The DJ played a bit of music for everyone. So if you're looking for a place to organise an event, I'd definitely recommend The Spencer!!!

Friday January 2nd and looking for somewhere for lunch in Putney. Didn't fancy the overpriced Bibo which was empty in any event. An enticing 50% off offer at Valentino's didn't commence until the 4th. We didn't want a full-blown three-course meal at the excellent Enoteca. So we took a short bus ride to this Putney Common pub which I hadn't visited for a few years and I think may have changed hands since. I think it's name may have changed too. Although we arrived just before two it was quite full, but as we gradually learnt, this may have had a lot to do with the long wait customers seemed to experience before getting their orders. It was also slightly irritating that a lasagne we ordered for our daughter had apparently been removed from the menu altogether although the sausage and mash she ordered instead was a tasty alternative. Then my wife was informed that the fish she had ordered was no longer available. Again the fish pie she ordered instead was a more than acceptable alternative. 'A great choice' said the waitress in response to my order of lamb shank. A pity then that the outside of the knuckle was black through overcooking. Although the mash couldn't be faulted overall the fish was a tad insipid and could have done with a thicker heartier gravy than the rather watery liquid poured over it. At £14.95 it was not as good value as the liver bacon and mash I had at Jamie's Italian in Central London a day earlier and which was £2 cheaper for cooking of a much higher order. The choice of beers was limited (only one lager on tap) and no Hoegaaeden; the prices of wines by the glass were fairly steep. Overall our experience was not at all bad. The waitress was charming and very eager to please, adjusting some nearby blinds to reduce the glare from the sinking sun. And yet Putney is not exactly short of a good dining experience or three such that this place really needs to raise its game if it is not to run the risk of standing out as a mediocrity or also-ran.

Out for a walk with family on a beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon, Saw what looked like a lovely pub and decided we would stop for the traditional Sunday Roast. Deeply disappointed in what was delivered to our table. My partner ordered lamb and I had the beef, her lamb was so raret if you'd let it loose on the nearby common it would have skipped away. Had to swap my beef with her as luckily i like my meat rarer (although I'm sure it bleated when I cut it!!). Both Lamb and Beef were flavourless and could easily have came from the same joint. The roast potatoes were poor, i think they had been cooked and left warming for some time as they were chewy and soft rather than crispy and fluffy.....and there were only 3!!!! The vegetables were underdone, pratically had to saw through the brocolli. The gravy was thin and watery and added little flavour to the meal. I was set to complain when the guy produced the bill but he then proceeded to undercharge by £20. I thought fair enough I'll leave it at that ... he then returned a minute later realising his mistake and insisted I pay in full even though I complained about the quality of the meal. Off he went to see the manager who returned with a revised bill in which he "kindly" reduced by the the £8 service charge. A charge that I wasn't even aware that I had paid for, Don't you hate it when they do that? Anyway continued complaining only brought the offer of a discounted meal to be "enjoyed" on another day. As if I'd want to come back again!!! The few positives were that the service in terms of taking the order and time for food to be delivered was good, The mint sauce with the lamb and horseradish cream with the beef were very good. But thats about it I'm afraid. Our dining compainions fared no better and basically we all left the place feeling ripped off and completly unsatisfied. Oh well you live and learn!!!

Good food, good beer/ale, good service, this is a great pub tucked away by Putney Common towards Barnes. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the pub has a really nice relaxed atmosphere. In summer there are picnic tables out on the common just outside the pub offering more flexibility with outdoor seating - you can’t beat it in Putney. Great to stop off with your bikes after cycling around Richmond Park. The extra outside tables can mean food can take a little longer due to the extra capacity however it’s worth it for being able to sit outside in the sunshine enjoying a cold beer!!

We live in Putney and have visited here at least a dozen times (including Christmas events) and have never been disappointed. I've read some of the negative reviews - and while I appreciate every establishment can have an off night - this was never the case for us. The food is good and the service attentive. And during spring/summer, we have enjoyed the extra seating outdoors in Putney Common. When it gets busy, the service slows down - but you expect this when the pub is close to max capacity. We enjoy this pub very much - it's worth a visit.

We live in Putney and Putney is a great family area. Putney common is one of the gems in Putney and The Spencer's Arms is located on the common. The last few occasions we went for lunch has been a disaster. Our two little girls meals never arrived and we order and paid upfront. We had waited 40 mins to be serve our food and we were devastated when we were told they omitted the girls food. We decided to give the spencer arms another go last month after giving the pub a wide berth for a year. This time we ordered Lasagne for our little girls instead they bought Penne. We were speechless the waitress said if we didn't take it we could be waiting for another 30 mins. I emailed the manager twice post our terrible experience and received no response. My advice is if you have children avoid this pub at all costs. It's a great shame they have a prime slot but have awful service.

This is a pub on a very busy road. We went in on a Sunday evening and it was quite busy, I presume because of mothers day. It is a quite spacious pub and most of the tables were occupied. The pub looks over Putney Common and it would be nice to sit outside however there is a bus terminus right opposite and the noise and fumes of the constant stream of buses, even on a Sunday evening can be quite distracting. The food was quite good but very pricey for what it was. I ordered the fillet of sea bass on chilli spinach. That is exactly what I got with nothing extra which at £15.95 I thought was a little too much without so much as a potato. That said it was well cooked and very tasty. My partner had fishcakes which were also tasty but also well overpriced at £10.95. Nice pub and I would happily drink there again but would probably elect to eat somewhere that is better value for money.

This is our local as we live across the road. Super pub decor wise and atmosphere. However I feel the owners are to mindful of their profit The menu rarely changes. It is boring, of average quality and expensive for an indifferent obviously portion controlled meal. We went to eat there last night and thought better of it, cheese on toast at home seemed more appealing. The beers are boring and not that well kept. Rarely have a guest beer and I get the feeling that if they do it is because the owner has made a profitable one off deal with the brewery.Compared to the recently renovated nearby Bulls Head in Barnes the waiting staff are poorly trained, indifferent, rarely smile and in many instances the food is thrown at you because on busy days they are chasing their tails. I resent paying the prices they charge for their food to eat it at grimy tables with cutley pre wrapped in small paper napkins. The furniture needs a proper clean. It is a very popular pub at weekends with those with small children and as such requires greater attention. The owners of this pub need to visit The Bulls Head in Barnes and take note of the friendly welcome, The well kept beers, the coffee machine, the excellent menu and the correctly trained staff.

Lovely pub on the edge of Putney common and a good place for a pint with friends away from the nightmare that can be Putney high street on a Friday night. If you go during the summer there are tables on the common and its got to be one of the best places in SW London to go for a drink with the family, especially if you have kids as they can run around freely without you needing to worry. The food is always good (although portions could be a little larger) and the menu seems to change often enough to provide a decent choice. Personally love the fresh pasta dishes and the burgers are a great option too.As previous commentators have mentioned, its not cheap but quality comes at a price :)Pretty barmaids too!

What a shame. Used to be a great pub when the staffed cared and the food was good - how things have changed within a year or so.Good (expensive) beer, but they've got to make a living and that's acceptable - but, the quality of food (apart from burgers) has plummeted, no one seems to care despite feeding back and response to emails is zero. As for the service behind the bar.....I don't think it exists.I'll start to look elsewhere as SW15 has got some great boozers.Come on Spencer, pull your socks up and serve us well.

As our local we keep going back but every time come out either annoyed at how expensive it is or that the service is slow and often arrogant / surly. This is a generalisation as not all the staff are like that but tonight was another example of slow service and overpriced food served by uninterested staff. So frustrating as this should be a brilliant pub but needs to work out what it is I.e. Pub, gastro pub, restaurant etc. please spencer arms, get a grip, lower your prices and up your game and you could be awesome.

The spencer is a very elegant gastro pub, however it needs to decide if it is a restaurant or a pub as it;s main focus. Inside I would suggest it is more of a restaurant, however with a cracking beer garden on the common and a good choice of lagers/ale on tap it's a good place to go for lazy sunday afternoon in the summer. I think the food is a little over priced but does have some good options on the menu.

I went to spencer arms this evening with 3 of my girlfriends for a few drinks and dinner. If you get a seat outside in Putney common, you are asked to pay an optional service charge as the staff bring your meals out to you. When my meal was brought to me, there was no cutlery and I was told that I had to go inside the pub myself and bring out my own cutlery. I politely asked the waitress if she could bring me some cutlery and she said no at first and then grudgingly brought and slammed the cutlery just for me on the table (1 person at a table of 4). I had to walk to the pub myself to bring cutlery for the others at my table, along with condiments such as ketchup etc. Considering that my friends and I had paid around £10 in total as service charge tonight, we got nothing for it. It takes the staff barely 20 seconds to walk to the common to bring us out meals. If I had known that the service would be so rubbish, I would have gone inside to collect my meals instead of shelling out on service charge. The only decent thing about this place is the outdoor seating. Next time, I will bring a picnic to the common to enjoy in peace, instead of paying for rubbish service.
