The local beer with a citrus flavour was awesome and I loved it. The dinner menu was Middle East with lamb Kofta and chicken shawarma. The portion size was just right and the food was nice. This is a nice pub with friendly services.

I was in here the other night where I witnessed the already known rude manager being unecessarily aggressive to a small group of young adults, it became quite a fuss and disturbed the whole place, it then became clear that one of the males in the group who was mixed race was being discriminated against. Never have I ever witnessed such judgemental stereotyping in Brighton before and will not be returning here again - god knows what would happen if I went for a meal with my husband who happens to be mixed race too. I shall be taking my friends and money elsewhere, to a more accepting and welcoming non racist place. I will certainly not be recommending this place until the staff mangement has been sorted out, this is not the first time an incident with this manager has happened, embarrassing and shameful really as it could be great.

I've been to The Southover a few times but had never eaten there. The staff are always friendly and efficient. I'm vegetarian but my friend had the chicken and said it was delicious. There was also a vegetarian and a vegan option. I had the veggie option, vegetable and feta Wellington, it was delicious! So much better than the usual bland nut roast. The gravy was great, the veg that went with it were cooked perfectly and the Yorkshires were homemade, squidgy and crispy. If you're looking for a roast in Brighton this is the place to go.

The perfect Sunday Roast. Succulent Pork belly, great selection of veg, Yorkie, stuffing and 3 delicious roasties. Nice touch that the gravy matched the meat selection. Extra cauliflower cheese and pigs in blankets went down a treat. Stuffed and incredibly satisfied feeling post dinner. Can't fault it! The veggie and vegan options also looked good. Should comment on the great ales on offer here too 😀😀

The latest upgrade of the food might well be the magic bullet, my culinary visits have certainly increased in frequency, and with the key staff members having made the place a second home you should be assured of a warm welcome, some craft ale expertise and a fond farewell. The Little Blue Smokehouse brings a focused feel to the menu, the chilli being the highlight - slowly savour its smokey magnificence whilst enjoying the varied, and always smile inducing, iTunes selection. Midweek it's the perfect antidote to the grind of the rat race.

Have visited this pub on a number of occasions. On most recent visit on a Friday evening the place felt more like a creche with lots of children running around whilst their parents enjoyed a drink. My husband and I stayed for one drink and did not eat here as we had planned. We have been in on other evenings and did not experience this but have heard that Friday nights local nappy valley folk bring their children here. Bring back child free pubs or keep your children under control is what I say

I've always lived in Brighton but never really been to this pub before. We were greeted by some friendly staff and a great selection of beer (both ale and craft!) to choose from. There was a busy but comfortable atmosphere for a Saturday evening and was surprised by some great live music! Lovely to meet Ryan and feel his enthusiasm for this amazing pub and how to inject some pizazz into the place. A new Sunday roast is a fine place to start and the delivery was strong. Good value at £12. Excellent bountiful gravy, extra veg to share in additional to the full bowls initially presented. The chicken portion was a little small but otherwise excellent - if cauliflower cheese is your thing, this is your kind of roast dinner!

This is a pub that sells good food. We went on a Sunday so the whole place was packed out. The serving staff, whilst very competent, were run off their feet and so food was very slow to arrive. However, it was worth the wait as the quality of the food (mainly Sunday roasts) was very good. The portions are very generous and the food well seasoned and tasty. Because this is a pub, the small circular tables are difficult to organise for a large group but, this did not affect our enjoyment. The menu is concise and offers the usual Sunday Roast plus Veggie options. Limited range of puddings but the crumble was excellent.

By far the worst roast I have ever had in Brighton, the Southover is such a lovely pub with amazing service and great beer, but the roast was such a let down, but nowhere near as bad as the service from the kitchen staff. After ordering a stuffed chicken I was surprised to find there was at east 10 times the amount of sausage stuffing as there was chicken no more than 2 tea spoons of chicken, I completely understand that sometimes these things happen so I nicely asked the staff if it was meant to be like this to which the chef replied "what do you expect for £9".....well to be honest when I order roast chicken I expect chicken not sausage. Sadly the chefs attitude got worse I explained to the staff that I didn't want the food, the plate had obviously been sitting in the oven for a good hour, it was so hot it was untouchable, the gravy had a skin on it and the potatoes we soggy......all of these things would have been fine if they had been accompanied by the roast chicken. On asking the chef to take the plate away I was meet with an incredibly aggressive verbal attack, the chef took the plate away refusing to give me my money back - so no dinner - no money......she then came back to our table twice not once twice with the plate of food trying to point to the chicken that was non existent, both times what she had though was more chicken was actually more sausage. The experience was by far the worst service I have ever had in a Brighton pub, and I love the Southover, safe to say we will never vista again on a Sunday.

I went for a Sunday roast with a group of six friends. We ordered within a few minutes of each other, and were told the food would be served together. The first two roasts arrived within 15 minutes. The portions were pretty small, and one wellington was still actually frozen in the centre. The same plate came back 5 minutes later, looking thoroughly microwaved. The next two roasts arrived another 15 minutes later. After another 30 minutes, and various reassurances from different members of staff, we were told that the order for the final two roasts had been mislaid... All in all a very disappointing experience. I understand that mistakes happen, but the staff didn't seem to want to take any responsibility, and treated the situation as a hassle rather than a mistake which needed to be rectified. They really need to work on how they treat customers, and having looked at some other reviews there seems to be underlying problem with how they manage orders. The food we did manage to eat was actually okay - a good, standard roast. However, the service was so poor that the whole experience was overshadowed.

Ordered the chicken roast because it came with stuffing. Worst roast I think I've ever had in Brighton. Prices cheaper on the site than they are in the pub. Didn't get the food that was listed on the menu!Cutlery was smacked down on our table and I was given a butter knife to eat with.Food came with no stuffing and when I asked where it was I was then told they had none because the butcher didn't deliver it but was told they had given us extra veg instead.. (the veg on this roast was chunky beetroot, kale and one bit of cauliflower!!!!! Who has kale in a roast??Would of been nice to know this before hand as I probably would of ordered something different.-Roast potatoes was so dry and skin was tough to chew. Definitely had been re-cooked.- Roast chicken breasts were SO dry- no yorkshires- lots of beetroot, not something i really want in a Sunday roast.Online menu also says it comes with hot bread sauce = it doesn't. A very plain and boring roast with badly cooked ingredients. Left feeling cheated out of my money. ALSO, prices on the website are cheaper than the actual prices in the pub!!!

Nice refurbishment of this old boozer. Been through a few chefs, with varying degrees of success, but the latest seems to have nailed it. The lamb I had was delicious, with the usual trimmings and nice to see some curly kale. Wait was 45 mins, but its a Sunday and was advised of wait prior to order, so no problem. On the 4th January we took my son and his flatmates out for Sunday lunch. They raved about the Southover and how good the Sunday roasts had been, the quality, size of portion and price. I was encouraged to see the selection of beers on offer, found a seat and made our food selection. After an hour and 40 minutes later the chef came to our table to enquire (waving a dirty piece of paper) if this was our order as it had seemed to have been mislaid. We said it was and he apologised for the delay, he was new to the place and that we would be eating within 5 minutes. some 20 minutes later and having witnessed food being sent back and the table opposite leaving theirs saying it was uncooked and really pretty awful, we decided to go elsewhere. While standing at the bar to announce we were going I was horrified to hear the bar managers utter such disgusting profanities to a female customer and then proceeded to throw her change in her face. We were offered no compensation or apology and so we left along with several other customers. Having never been to the Southover before I cannot comment on how it used to be, but having seen such a disgraceful occurance I doubt very much if this establishment will be in business much longer. Until there is a drastic improvement I would avoid the Southover like the plague.

Even the massive trek up the hill doesn't put us off this one (okay, we have been known to get a taxi...). The Sunday roasts are consistently excellent with large portions of meat. Only criticism is that someone in the kitchen is pretty heavy handed with the spice on the red cabbage. As for the drink selection - fantastic. The pub stocks the usual, fairly uninspired range of local cask ales available in all Indigo pubs across the city. When will someone explain to Indigo that 'local' doesn't always mean 'good'! But, like the bigger Hare and Hounds, has a pretty decent bottle and guest keg selection. Suspect a lot of this is down to the Manager - I think his name is Allie? Highly recommend

It's NOT where Tripadvisor thinks, on the south side of Southover Street near its north-west end. As a vegetarian who loves to cook, i seldom bother going out for a roast as often leave dissapointed. The Southover menu for sunday lunch is broad offering three meat and three veggie options, and to my glee, the additional option of having a meat or veggie 'mixed roasts', with a bit of each veggie main. Crispy roast spuds, spiced red cabbage, buttery swede mash, greens, carrots and a GIANT yorkshire pudding (yay!) with a stuffed tofu thing, butternut nut roast and a mushroom tart which was just sublime. Great selection of veg (esp. the red cabbage) and huge Yorkshire puddings. For dessert I had the sticky toffee pudding with ice cream, which was equally lovely. One disappointment though was the service, the girls on the bar were really sweet but one half of our table's meals did take a while to arrive, by the time they did, my friend and I had almost finished!
