Just stopped off in passing for a coffee and scone. Excellent. Not one of the oversized scones that you often find nowadays. Very friendly and welcoming. Nice selection of gifts available too many of which are locally made. Will definitely be back.

We visited here as a family of 7 on Sunday for lunch. We had popped in the day before to ask if they took reservations and to view menu. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. When we arrived, the table was all ready for us and we were made very welcome. We had assortment of vegetable tart, toasties, pulled pork special and kids meals. Everyone was happy with their food and there were clean plates all round. They had great side salad options which were interesting and flavourful, rather than the usual pile of limp lettuce you get in some places. We then also had traybakes and one person had the dessert of the day which was a very generous portion of apple and caramel crumble which I’m told was lovely. All the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful and we saw them accommodating different needs - a toy brought for a young child and a cushion to support an older gentleman’s back.

Soft boiled egg with soldiers and latte for me and bacon / egg batch and tea for OH. Lovely. Couldn't resist the treacle scone and cream as had never had one before. Even suggested some treacle to spread instead of butter. Delicious! Dairy alternative (it was almond the day we visited). Lovely staff. Quality homecooked food. Popular with bikers too. Its disjointed tables and chairs, tartan patterns and brick walls gave the place a great personality, which was only accentuated by the excellent music playing in the background and the kind staff. The menu was also very appealing, including a wide range of options. I loved how healthy the menu was too! It was filled with fresh, light options and the sides were mainly vegetable, pulse, salad and grain based. No greasy cheesy toasties to be found here, but rather homemade tartlets and soups. We ordered eggs with chips and a scampi pitta bread. When placing my order I was told that the dish came with three optional sides but as I am not a fan of mayonnaise and tomatoes I declined them. The next thing I knew, the cook came out and offered me some chips and various other options as a side, believing that the pitta itself would not be enough. I found that to be a truly personal touch to my experience at The Smithy New Galloway, which makes me remember the place fondly. You could tell in every bite that the ingredients were locally sourced, that the condiments were homemade (including the ketchup) and that the menu had been well thought out.

We were looking for a nice place to go for an afternoon cup of tea, and read the reviews of The Smithy. We headed here, and we are really delighted that we did. Although we arrived at 4:30, there was an extremely warm welcome, and we were shown to a table, spotlessly clean, to make our choices. My partner chose a scone with cream and jam and butter, and an iced coffee, whilst I had a toasted teacake and some deliciously blended Scottish tea. There is so much to recommend this place, not least the small touches of the individually wrapped butter pats! My partner declared the scone one of the best ever eaten, light and tasty. The cakes that followed were wonderful… A light flavoursome chocolate roulade, and a generous, rich millionaires shortbread.

When I found out one of my favourite cafes had changed hands I got that sinking feeling and imagined it would never be as good. How wrong could I be? We had the warmest welcome from Margaret who chatted to us as if we were old friends. The whole place is very inviting, decorated beautifully, with some great wallpapers and pretty, pale tartan curtains tied back with small sporrans, (inspired). As we visited around 10 o'clock we got to pick from the breakfast menu, which included bacon butties, bacon and egg roll, porridge and homemade scotch pancakes. The latter were served either with bacon and maple syrup or yogurt, fresh fruit and maple syrup and were delightfully light and fluffy! The day we first visited they were waiting to hear if they had won an award for food premises in Dumfries and Galloway. When we visited again two weeks later we were delighted to see they had won "Best new food business" in the area. Congratulations Margaret, Andrew, Zoe and all the staff at the Smithy on a well deserved award! Looking forward to our next visit.

The place was well kept and clean with parking on the street outside. We ordered a chicken and bacon club sandwich and roasted vegetables in pitta bread. Used to visit regularly however the changes with the new owners are not very impressive. Very limited menu - especially if you have children. On our visit my gran asked for a half portion of salad but we were told this wasn't possible. The only half portions available were scamp & chips or ham, chips & egg??? We also ordered 2 salmon salads which were not what we expected. A salmon mash up in the middle of the plate which resembled a sandwich filler (we expected a fillet) and the salad all round it in sections - lettuce, beetroot, potato salad etc. My gran never complains but she said she won't be back. We are all of the same thoughts. So disappointing. We think they've missed the boat and will miss out on repeat visitors.

The Smithy has long been a favourite place to eat and drink but we were worried when we heard it had changed hands. We needn't have been concerned because on visiting on Father's Day our welcome was as warm as ever. We had the special of the day, a bit roast turkey sandwich, and it was well presented and very tasty. We indulged in a piece of chocolate roulade which was very tasty and wonderfully light. We returned the following day and had the poached salmon salad, lovely salmon served with an interesting range of salads. Again very tasty, beautifully presented and filling. Will definitely be returning to try the three-cheese toasties. New owners, a very different menu but the same warm welcome and interest shown in the customers.

Called in for a snack and a coffee. New place (opened 9 weeks ago) and it was packed and as it was a sunny day, the outside tables were also full. Fortunately, there was one table available for the two of us and what a revelation this turned out to be. We had originally got to Kitty's, only to find that it is now closed and is the new Community Shop for New Galloway, but they recommended the Smithy, and oh boy, we were delighted that they did. From the friendliest of welcomes, to just looking at the beautiful array of local gifts they had on sale (at reasonable prices too!) we had the most beautiful of lunches. There was an option to have a small (or large!) bowl of soup instead of side salads with the sandwich or toastie (amongst other things) and it was truly delicious. There was a constant flow of people wanting tables (yes it was lunchtime, but the place next door was deserted, which spoke volumes!). There were a lot of locals in there too, which is also a very good sign. The owners, who were very friendly, made everyone feel very welcome, and if ever there was a friendly face of Scotland to show visitors, this is it. Will certainly be back, and will be taking all my own visitors there, it is just so special - and very reasonably priced too.

Having visited The Smithy several times over the last few years and enjoyed it's consistent good food we decided to try out the place under the new management. Well it has had a complete new decor inside, new coffee bar, new menu and the rest rooms, whilst now reversed, are still clean and tidy. The new menu was different to the old, the meals we chose were both sufficient and very tasty, we particularly liked the salad selection with the mains, not too green and not overpowering. We took away cakes to eat later and I have to say they were extremely light and very good to eat. Above all, however Andrew and Margaret and their staff went out of their way to make us feel valued and welcome. So all in all we were very pleased we had stopped, excellent food and lovely atmosphere and staff. Highly recommended.

We visited this cafe twice during our week on holiday. I had the smoked haddock quiche and raved about it so much my husband was desperate to go back so he could try it too.

We visited the tea room a few time and were never disappointed. The chips are a must. Ladies are very friendly and will chat and help you find things to do. There is a little shop in the tea room with some lovely bit.

A nice little tea room in New Galloway, not very many tables, so getting a seat can be difficult. The staff are friendly and efficient. I was served one of the best burgers I've had in a very long time.

Gran lugar, recomiendo.

If you are exploring this beautiful region then The Smithy makes a perfect stop for a good cup of tea and a brilliant selection of obvious home bakes. Rustic - in a nice way. Good Country service and good country fair. Whats not to like.
