The staff were very friendly and it was a nice location and decor, however the food was sub-par. One of our party ordered the lamb shank to which we were told the price was incorrect on the menu and was actually dearer - how long does it take for someone to amend the menu? Or you should be informed when being seated, not a good start. We ordered starters and mains, 3 of us had garlic mushrooms which were cold so we sent them back, when they came back out they just weren’t nice, didn’t taste of garlic, they were just a grey watery mush - not what I expect for an £8 starter. We provided this feedback to the waitress when she took our starters away. The mains were average, I had hunters chicken which was fine but for £16 I expected a lot more. We decided not to have pudding as we didn’t want to indulge in the mediocrity any longer. When it came to pay, nothing had been comped - which I would have expected when you have to send 3 dishes back and then say they weren’t very nice so I asked if something could be done about the bill. The waitress spoke to the manager who was behind the bar who made a begrudged facial expression and questioned if we ate them. Please bear in mind that just because you are bobbed down behind the bar I can still see your rude facial expressions. I wish I could give a better review but it really is not worth the money, either get a better chef or match your prices to the quality of your food.

I'd very much like to give a better review of the charming restaurant and helpful staff, but I just can't I'm afraid. We made a booking in advance and then on the day were told by phone that maintenance issues had closed the kitchen - so we rebooked for the following day. After a friendly greeting from the staff, I chose a meat pie. When it arrived it was 95% vegetables and just a single thin slice of pie, not an individual one. The waitress returned it to the kitchen immediately and asked if I wanted to order anything else. I chose what I thought was the safest option, fish and chips. It arrived quickly but the fish was rubbery (cooked from frozen I suspected) and chips only just cooked and very bland. Nice minty peas though. Not wanting to send a second plate of food back to the kitchen I ate the edible parts and left. Although the staff handled the situation reasonably well, the food just wasn't up to scratch. Perhaps things will improve as the season progresses. I do hope so.

Came here for a Sunday lunch, having been in the past. It was ok, nothing wrong with it but no where near as good as last time. There was no cauliflower cheese which they used too which was a shame, and also we paid an extra £1 for two meats rather than one, however we didn’t realise we would still only get the standard 2 (very thin) slices of meat. Surely if you pay extra £1, or £2 you’re paying for an extra piece of meat not just the privilege of swapping it? Little bit more veg wouldn’t have gone a miss either. As I said it was ok but wouldn’t rush back based on this visit

My husband and I had a late reservation (8.45).The building and decor were amazing big, really well thought out and we loved it.Service was polite and very quick!! Food was nice. I had the garlic mushroom and the bread with it was so good. He had the chorizo and black pudding which looked amazing .We both had the steak of the day. Slightly under cooked but I didn’t mind. Slightly tough but certainly not chewy. They’d ran out of the creme brûlée so got the sticky toffee, it was nice.Covid wise all staff wore visors. The only thing I’m marking them down on was we were watching them clean the tables after guests and not one wiped down any of the salt and pepper grinders which are touched by so many people!!

Very dissappointed with this restaurant, my wife had the child lasagne which was greasy and oily resulting in her being unwell for the following two days with a bad tummy. The vegan/Gluten Free option (yes one choice) was tasteless, griddled Courgette sprinkled with salad and served next too a half cooked tomatoe. The Gluten Free food was served twice in the same sitting contaminated (my son is a Coeliac). The person who appeared to be the head waitress was clearly unhappy with her team as she was short with some of them on a number of occasions, she was heard raising her voice to somebidy in the kitchen. A comlete wash out.AVOID THIS RESTAURANT AT ALL COSTS!

Great menu and the food was lovely. Duck was perfectly cooked and partner had chicken supreme which was great. Cardamon creme brulee with sorbet was excellent. Please visit when you can.Only downside was a very large party with young kids running about and jumping up and down the stairs. It was later on a Friday night and spoilt the experience. I appreciate that the venue is not responsible for people' behaviour but if trying to create a higher end restaurant then might have to a) ask the respective clientele to control their children and/or b) not accept bookings with kids after a certain time. We have 4 children ourselves and whilst we think we would not let them behave like that, it is really hard to keep them entertained in an adult setting at night. Might be best to prevent the situation up front.

Very strange place. Left phone message to book but no reply. Phoned again and they'd not had it. Explained it was for a birthday meal. No atmosphere, everything slate grey and looked tired / scuffed, Very quiet at 1.30 pm and yet food seemed to take ages to arrive. I don'y mind waiting for fresh good food but unfortunately the roast beef was as tough as old boots and couldn't be cut ( I noticed the only other couple we could see, had left theirs too after what looked like a fight with it!) Pork was mostly fat. Chips were dry like oven chips. Veg was lovely, cauliflower cheese especially. Staff were not really interested and when they asked ( i don't like complaining) I pointed out about the beef, and they said they'd tell the chef. Didn't see them again after that. Dismal really.

We arrived on time and although shown to our table immediately there was a distinct lack of friendliness in the welcome. The waitress who took our order seemed to be new and lacked confidence. The place was very quiet but service relatively slow. While the food was ‘ok’ the experience was disappointing. The place has been given a facelift and was pleasant but spoilt by the cheap plastic flowers on every table. A word of advice- remove them! If you can’t get real ones it would be better without any at allOverall I felt that more attention needs to be given to customer service - a welcome smile, friendly comments, a cheery goodbye (no-one was anywhere to be seen as we left) - would all cost nothing but would transform a cold hearted experience into a place I would want to return to. As it is I feel reluctant to recommend it.

I booked a table for 19.45pm for four of us, to celebrate my birthday. We arrived on time and waited patiently to be greeted and shown to our table - however unfortunately we had to wait a good 10 minutes before anyone took any notice of us. This was after ringing the bell twice and one of my friends having to actually go up to a waitress to say we were here, despite them having passed and seen us waiting already.By the time they got around to taking a drinks order, it was around 8.10pm. We then asked whether the cocktails were 241 that evening - the waitress said it was only on until 8pm. I kindly pointed out that we would have ordered before 8pm if they would have taken us to our table on time! The bar staff agreed for our first round to be 241. Ordered the shin of Welsh beef. I have previously ate at the Slate and had lovely food however I was very disappointed this time. Not sure what had happened but my meal was VERY salty. Wasn’t able to finish it and left feeling disheartened, especially as it was my birthday we were celebrating! There were two big birthday groups in the restaurant that evening. The waitresses seemed to struggle to attend to the big tables and the other people eating in the restaurant at the same time. I think it would help to get more staff on board as they were obviously struggling. Two positives - our waitress was lovely and very thankful when we pointed out there was a leak from above our heads. Also - cocktails very nice!

We went to the main entrance at reception and was shown through to our table. While we were waiting for the two other members of our party, we noticed that the restaurant was filling up and it sounded as if it is used by the locals, which is always a good sign! The food was fabulous. We didn’t enjoy our visit here at all. This restaurant has not thought about its vegetarian choices at all. The menu reads very nicely - quite like a gastro pub menu however the standard of food is not even close. Everything was bland. Two of our party had the arancini, which just didn’t taste of anything at all - two big balls of very bland and slightly dry ristotto with nothing else to make the mouthful more interesting. The black pudding starter was very small. The mussels were good. The only vegetarian starter was the bland butternut squash arancini and then for main it was either a ‘burger’ or butternut squash risotto for main. I’m never impressed with vegetarian ‘burgers’ in a place like this so asked if I could have the pea risotto without the chorizo and to swap in cheddar instead of Parmesan. The waitress went to the kitchen to check and assured me that was fine. I was then served a big bowl of the butternut squash risotto. When I queried this, I was told that they couldn’t take the chorizo out of the pea risotto. I’m not quite sure why she had told me they could and then just brought out the risotto I specifically told her I didn’t want, without even mentioning it. All very odd and not great service. On top of that, the risotto was just a big bowl of bland rice; every single mouthful was the same tasteless mush. Usually when vegetables are added into risotto, it is to add flavour and texture. The bits of vegetables cut into this did neither so it was a very poor dinner. I wouldn’t recommend this place at all and absolutely not if you are vegetarian or vegan. I’m so disappointed with our dinner tonight and how much we paid for it. Overpriced food as the quality was so poor. If only the execution of the dishes lived up to the sound of the menu.

The bedrooms are tidy and clean and spacious and assist with the overall comfort and standard set by The Slate. Well located on edge of Bangor set away from the A55 and A5 junction. I am a former loco spotter so the close proximity of the Holyhead - Chester railway did not bother me but some folks would have to keep their bedroom windows closed overnight. Finally when deserts came once again one was forgotten also the coffee machine was not working. I think we were unlucky, there was a big party in and I felt the kitchen couldn’t cope. To start, I had the Conwy mussels in a thick garlic sauce with bacon and leek which I mopped up with a nice sized wedge of sourdough bread. Followed by a main course of Shank of Lamb served on a bed of minted mashed potato with seasonal vegetables and it was superbly cooked and delivered. The lamb fell off the bone and the portion size was bang on! To conclude my dining experience I finished off with the wedge of hot fudge cake which was pleasantly not heavy at all and not too rich either! I loved it! Went to celebrate brother in laws birthday, chose the Sunday lunch 3 course menu . Unfortunately no soup available, so only 4 of us had a starter, despite this 3 of us served and the birthday boy was still waiting for his. 3 of us had the beef main, thoroughly enjoyed it, 2 has the lamb, looked dry and little of it on the plate, they said it was just ok as lamb went, told them they should have the beef the other main was pork, and that was quoted as being nice. Plenty of vegetables , perfectly cooked, lashings of gravy We ordered desert, I chose the crumble... I expected a proper crumble topping, but got what appeared to be crumbled up digestive biscuit sprinkled sparingly over the stewed fruit, not what I expected, please make a proper crumble topping as it was a bit of a let down. The other deserts were sticky toffee pudding and ice cream, and a lemon meringue cheesecake with pouring cream. No complaints about the sticky toffee, but confused about the cheesecake which came served in a ramekin type dish, with a meringue topping and a jug of cream. None of us could work out how to actually eat it, as you had to remove the meringue to get to the cheesecake in the dish, but then, where were you meant to put the pouring cream? It would have worked perfectly if the cheesecake had been put into one of those dishes where the sides clip off, then you could have left the meringue topping on and poured the cream over. Anyway it was a lovely meal overall, and looking forward to going back again soon but might go for cheese board rather than the deserts .

That was the conversation we had with the staff until I complained. At 7.15 I went to the bar and complained about the unacceptable service and a gentleman (manager?!) replied to the effect "whats up" again unacceptable. He tried to redress the situation but I walked out followed by my partner whom he was trying to appease. Afraid his words fell on deaf ears !!! Standard of service needs vast improvement !

Checked out the menu before arriving looked impressive with a good choice.Unfortunately when we ordered the seafood platter for two the best thing was the langoustine which never arrived with the other food as they had forgotten to cook it but still managed to over cook when it did arrive, but at least it wasn’t covered in bread crumbs and deep fried like all the other seafood. If I wanted a seafood platter from Iceland supermarkets or the likes and to be overcharged for the privilege of having it this is the place to come. Even had to ask for the langoustine which they had missed out along with bread and the miserable portion of tartar sauce which was almost certainly not homemade but straight form a jar served in a thimble size portion. Wish places like this would set themselves a reasonable menu to suit the chefs capabilities this was not the case here be less pretentiousness. How this plate could be described as a seafood platter is beyond me. Deep fried seafood bites in a basket/on slate would be a better description and at least one would know what to expect. Was so looking forward to this meal and came away with the bitter taste of disappointment.

Book a table for 8 people at 6pm .arrived slightly (10 minutes)early ask if we would like drinks in the bar and see the menu to which we did. Some 30 to 40 minuets later we had to ask for them to come and take the food order! We where shown to are table nearly one hour later than we had booked , good job we where not on a time table!Only a couple in the restaurant as we sat down.Meal 1Duck which when it arrived was over cooked for me as I would expect it to be pink and the plum sauce was small droplets on the plate which where for show only . The parsnip purée arrived halfway though my meal. With hindsight I have looked at past reviews the plum sauce has been committed on previously. Obviously management do not care to correct issue that previously customer pointed out.Meal 2Sweet chilli glazed pork belly was served without crispy rice noodles we had to ask where they we’re and arrived again half way though the meal.Meal 310 once rib eye steak was 12 mm thick approx and over cooked was ask for medium and came well done. Served with think chips which were under cooked.Meal 4 Beef burger arrived with no bacon or onion rings again thick cut chips under cooked. When onion rings arrived after having to ask for them they arrived towards the end of the meal soggy/anaemic and under cooked.Meal 5Chicken burger did not arrived until at least one person had finished their meal and it also was missing baconThe reason given why the burger was late.we had made an error on the order and had to redo it.Meal 6/7Platter for two (seafood )Lot of things seemed deep Fried and not in equal quantities. Be aware that the mussels come in a cream sauce which is not show on the online menu.Meal 8Salmon off the special boardHooray as it should be no complaints excellent!Table service poor and had to ask for condiment etc and even worse had to go to reception to ask for drinks!Hence to say we were going to have desserts but we decided against it.We did complain and We were offered a round off drinks but we had already decided enough was enough. We were given 10% off only the food bill , we did feel sorry for the receptions as the manager would come and deal with our complaints.Hate to think how this would be at a busy time as the restaurant only had a further 6 people!

We had been looking around a national trust property, but where to eat, nothing gluten free there. So we turned left out the castle and found The Slate. This was not what we expected, the place was comfortable but not sterile. The service was good the price was also good. Yet it was the food we wanted, and what a good surprise we had. Although it was lunch time, we looked at the evening menu as well. I wished I was staying, but we had people to meet. Gluten free was not a problem, a big plus for my wife, the rest was also good, but take note everyone can eat gluten free, it tastes just the same. We did not wait to long for our meals, and they did not disappoint us. Excellent meal, excellent service, and it won't hurt your wallet, call in sometime and enjoy good food

We took our clients here on a recommendation by our hotel. The service was very slow. I appreciate they were busy but we had to call them over a few times to clear plates away after each course. My starter of breads & olives was ok but not great. I ordered the roast duck and it was pretty poor. The meat itself was ok but the plain boiled potatoes and bland plain boiled veg that came with it was not what I expected for a dish that cost £14. There was a lack of sauce as well. (See photo). The chocolate cake dessert was ok but again nothing too special. My colleagues that ordered the chicken said this was really good so that might be the better option.

We enjoyed a fabulous meal today at The Slate. It was a family gathering with one member flying in from The Netherlands ( the rest of the party from England )for my niece's Graduation in Nursing from Bangor University. She had booked last week and the restaurant offered to open a little earlier than usual for her. We were impressed with this and also the lovely friendly welcome we got on arrival. The food was varied with something for everyone! We had a selection of starters and main courses all served promptly and presented with lots of little extras. Really good value for money. It was piping hot and the portions were substancial-so much so I couldn't find room for a dessert! I 'll just have to go back another day. We also had drinks outside and enjoyed the fantastic views and the lovely setting in the early evening sunshine before heading home.

Positives - Wonderful plac, staff excellent, friendly and great that they spoke Welsh and the food was fantastic. You could not ask for a warmer welcome by them all.The view out the front of the hotel is lovely and they have a lovely seated area. Even the locals who were there are very welcoming - really nice atmosphere.Food is fantastic - beaware they get booked up so don't miss your chance to have their meals. Our room was large (10), the bathroom smelt a bit (musty) but once we opened the door all cleared within minutes, King size bed very comfortable, however my partner's feet were over the edge (ha ha) and there was no light bulb in one lamp. Our room was also noisy with the sound of air coniditioning unit outside. There is also a train that goes by, which is noisy also - nothing they can do about that and the train is only two carriages long so hardly hours of noise more like seconds. We never complained over those few silly things above as we felt nothing detracted from what a lovely place to stay with wonderful people - just be aware of the train noise.Thank you for a great visit and your warm welcome

Have been a number of times, its always been quite good but never hitting the mark. This evening as it was father's Day we thought it might be very busy but in fact it was quiet. Our starters were very good, tasty and well presented. Unfortunately the main meal was very underwhelming. The gammon, egg and chips had no garnish whatsoever but it was the pork loin with cider sauce that was most disappointing, the string was left in the meat, the 'crackling' was just rubber like and fatty it would have been better left off the plate. We did point this out to the waitress but not a lot was made of it.We are local (1.5miles away) and were looking forward to making this our local hostelry, this may not be the case.

Great little venue with separate restaurant area and well stocked bar. Good selection of gins (including local) which went down well with our group. We had a retirement party here last night for a party of forty of us and had a really great night thanks to the friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere and lovely food. We had pre-ordered given the size of our group but I was still very surprised at how smoothly and efficiently all meals were delivered with every plate presented beautifully and professionally (so often you go to group events and it looks like your food has been thrown on a plate in a rush)! I won’t elaborate on how good the food was as between us we had so many dishes but the Salmon main with ratatouille was lovely as was the Duck and the Mozzarella Chicken and all at a very reasonable price. Huge compliments to the chef and his team in the kitchen but also to the team of waiting staff for their efficiency. Was my first visit here but will definitely be coming back with the family! Many thanks to Ben and his team for a lovely evening.

I visited The Slate this evening as a member of a party - I ordered salmon with chickpeas and ratatouille stating that I have an allergy to green peas (actually this was restating this information because they had been given to them when our table was booked). My order was delayed to the point that other members of my party were close to finishing eating by the time a plate of food was put in front of me...it was salmon, a bowl of mixed veg and a green pea puree. I asked the waitress if this was peas and she confirmed that it was! I sent it back. By the time a second plate of food was put in front me, everybody in my party had finished.... this time I had salmon (topped with pea fronds!), potatoes, a bowl of mixed veg. Due to the allergy I could only eat the part of the salmon that had not been touched by the fronds...but I suppose I should count myself lucky as at least my salmon was cooked - another member of our party was served RAW salmon! Pudding was next - and another long wait began. I ordered crème brulee and again myself and my husband were last to be served and everyone else had finished and even stacked their own plates before our desserts had even arrived - minus any spoons with which to eat it. While the custard in the crème brulee was nice enough, no attempt had been made to melt the sugar. The waiting on staff were polite - often slow and a little disorganised, but polite. The place itself is decorated in a fashionable way, though our table could have been cleaner. What really lets this place down is the food, the speed that the food is delivered to the table and the fact that members of one party cannot eat together. While I did not pay for my main course, this fact did not make up for the evening I had - nor the potentially serious consequences if I had eaten any of the food touched by green peas...they really do need to learn to take this issue more seriously.Add to all of this the fact that is costs quite a lot to have a drink with your meal.

We came down for a drink and stayed for dinner and we were mighty impressed with the service, table spacing, decor, menu choices, price, portions and culinary skills of a clear competent chef! The lighting was great too and the fun soundtrack which had every table talking about it - ringing reminiscent days bygone to each table and making us interact with one another. Superb quality locally sourced meats for the mains, roast Beef cooked perfectly, i.e. a little bit pink. We've had mixed reviews of the slate (or being a welshman I should say Y Llechan), but heard that they had employed a new Restaurant Manageress recently and things were changing, so four of us visited for Sunday lunch having booked a table a couple of hours before. Very impressed with setting and décor, and all the staff were very nice and welcoming, but some aspects of the service were very slow.We were immediately seated out our table, we were bit disappointed not to have a drink and look over the menu at the lounge seating by reception, but that's neither here or there. After being seated we didn't get the menus for about 10 mins, then the drinks took another 10 mins and it was approximately 30 mins before our food order was taken! Two of us went for chicken & chorizo risotto, one pate and one cream of white onion soup. All the starters were very nice, but the cream of white onion soup turned out to be roasted red pepper, but still enjoyed nevertheless. Our mains were three roast beef dinners and one turkey, but one of the beef was very tough, the other two were fine cooked medium with home made Yorkshire pudding and roasties. The turkey proved to be very nice as well, but another issue with the service was that when the sauces that were requested (cranberry and horseradish) we had eaten half of the meal before they arrived! Two of us were full after the two courses, but the ladies had room for dessert so they opted for the apple crumble, one with ice cream the other with custard. Despite the long wait once again, the crumble were declared a success but the custard rather on the milky side. All in all we were satisfied with the food, with two course costing £16.95 and three £19.95 very reasonable indeed. Will we go back, yes we would, but hopefully we wont be there for 21/2 hours next time.

We have had good Sunday lunches here before, but today was a great disappointment. We waited ages for our meal of lamb but when it came it was half cooked and so grisly that most of it was too tough and stringy to cut and of any bits that could be hard won were in some cases quite unchewable. Service was friendly and helpful but our complaint about the uneatable meat, though allegedly reported to the chef, was not acknowledged by anyone in authority and no apology was offered. After a very long wait for desert, which had been ordered at the same time as the main course, it became apparent that our order had been forgotten and we had to remind the staff. We hope that any future visit will prove this to have been a momentary lapse.

We enjoyed a superb dining experience at the Slate today. The customer service was attentive and helpful. The lady who greeted us seemed to sense that we wanted the music turned down so we could talk easily. Everything was high end stylish. The dishes were freshly made, very full of taste, vegetables perfectly cooked, and beautifully presented. There was an Eton Mess beyond our expectations. Beautiful setting and history. It used to be a coach house for the castle at Penrhyn. The art was by local artists and continued the slate quarrying theme. We were told that if we brought grandchildren they would be served quickly and given colouring books to keep them busy. We shall be going again.

Beautiful food, stunning decor, lovely staff, but there was definitely something missing, which is such a shame. Steak (rare) was cooked perfectly, choc terrine pudding was divine but we waited for over an hour for our food which was fine for our group of friends chatting, but even we were getting frustrated in the end. Portions were small (I wouldn’t take the husband!) and we had to choose puddings at the start to get the 2 course price. Unfortunately we were ‘greeted’ by foul language of other guests at the door and in the bar area which wasn’t challenged, and continued through the night (you wouldn’t take my grandma!) Could be amazing....
