The staff are lovely and welcoming. The room did the job although the shower is a bit old fashioned with one fixed point not especially highly placed. The bed is of high quality and the cleanliness is good. But the food is pricey for the quality (which is good) from what I saw. The breakfasts need to push up to the quality of the other food offers at the slate. Satisfactory but room for improvement as they used to say on old school reports. An enjoyable stay overall, thank you.

On entering the Slate Hotel reception, it had a lovely cosy feel. All the staff were welcoming and pleasant. The room was spacious and comfortable and we had a good nights sleep in the comfy bed. We ate in the restaurant on the day we arrived. The food was well priced, plentiful and delicious. We booked here as a stopover before catching an early morning ferry the next day. We would definitely stay there again.

I stayed 2 nights here. My room was decent. The single bed was comfortable. I did find some rubbish leftover by, I assume the previous guests living in that room (underwear clothing tag, sweet wrapper). The room was also right above the restaurant area and car park, so it got noisy sometimes. Bathroom was small though, and the basin tiny. The shower drain wasn’t working very well. There was no stand in the shower to put your bottles of toiletries, bit inconvenient. Breakfast was good. Big portion for the main, however i do wish there were yogurt / cut fruits as well and not just some cereal. There seemed to only be one waiter at breakfast, who was also managing the reception part so seemed quite understaffed in the morning and service can be slow. I had dinner here one night, had scallops for starter and then their catch of the day as a main. Both were delicious. One of the highlights of staying here was seeing a peacock next door sunbathing and ruffling its feathers.

Had the Sunday roast. Surprisingly Yorkshire puddings are included in the price of the roasts since it looked like you pay extra. Food was very nice and perfectly done. We did find it quite pricey though. For 8 of us, no starters or puddings, was £210. And two were just drinking water. Be aware..

Went for Sunday lunch, and am sorry to say it was such a disappointment. The pate’ starter was presented in an espresso cup but was clearly a slab of pate’ that had been squashed into the cup as the rind was mixed inside. The scallops where charred (burnt) and had to be sent back The Beef dinner was pleasant but was let down by the inedible starters. Staff were pleasant though.

Just returned from an Easter Sunday Lunch at The Slate, place was full of atmosphere, and as usual - the food was exceptional. Best Sunday Roast around. We went as a table of 8, the service was superb, just a really good experience. When a team can pull off a packed Sunday Roast with many happy customers, then they are certainly doing something right! Would highly recommend.

Went there for a friend's birthday. Its a bit out of the way, not nearly enough parking so must be a nightmare for neighbourhood with people parking outside their homes. The food was OK, nothing to rave about particularly given their prices. The service was exceptionally poor. We waited nearly 40 minutes to get our drinks, our food for a party of only 5 came at different times so we didn't eat together or the first plate to arrive would have been cold. Coffees brought at the end we're wrong. It was a bit of a disaster. We won't go again. The place was packed and the table next to ours were overcharged for a number of items they didn't get. Perhaps they should book in fewer tables and deliver a better service.

We enjoyed the food on our recent family visit that we returned again, as a couple this time, within a week! Food again was wonderful. Great atmosphere- we were in the bar area - and although I wasn’t overly fond of seeing 3 dogs there amongst the diners it didn’t affect our enjoyment of the evening. Staff are all lovely and friendly. Apart from the menu provided , they do have a ‘catch of the day’ and ‘specials ‘ with steaks but I think the staff should mention these when you arrive at the table and not when asking for your order. A very minor gripe. Definitely recommended.

I visited The Slate for 3 evening meals in December 2022 as a solo visitor whilst my wife was in a near by hospital. The Bed and Breakfast I was staying at recommended The Slate as a quality dining hostelry. I telephoned ahead to see if a table was available and they were kind enough to squeeze me in . The food was a delight to the eyes and the taste buds . Each day has a changing menu depending upon availability and usually has at least six alternatives for each course. My first meal at The Slate was an uplifting and relaxing meal after my hospital experience earlier in the day. I had a Parsnip Soup as a starter as I had not eaten for most of the day. The delightful soup arrived in an usually angled dish and meant I had to take a photograph before eating the lovely warm bread and smooth soup. I had ordered a sausage and Mash for the main course and again a 'towering' visual spectacle appeared. The top of the tower was 'capped' by a dome of battered onion 'rings' . The sausages were tasty and 'melt in the mouth' and a rich sumptuous Gravy rounded off the whole meal . I had to see what the third course would be like with a 'Crunchie Waffle' for the dessert. It again did not disappoint with a Waffle topped with ice cream and toffee sauce with grated Crunchie bar over the top all delivered on a 'Slate' plate. I must also, as a long term Camra ( Campaign for Real Ale) member, say how impressed I was with the Bragdy Lleu Bendiglidfran red real ale . The Slate usually just has one real ale on from Bragdy Lleu but I can highly recommend the policy of having one very well kept beer. The staff are kind and welcoming with good knowledge of food and drink . They made me feel as if I had been going to The Slate for years after my first visit and the interest shown in my wife's medical condition. The Slate has a 'modernised' comfortable interior with multiple spaces over two rooms ( The bar and the restaurant) and yet it retains a calm atmosphere with the thick walls dampening the noise of numerous groups enjoying the delights if the Slate. A lady from a table in the next space came across to apologise for the noise her child was making whilst playing with toys on the floor . I replied that I had not her child and was so glad they were all able to enjoy the space and food as a family . A car park is on the left handside of The Slate and the brown tourist signs can lead you to the place although they can be easily missed. It is not far from the main A55 and well worth the five minute detour to seek it out. As an all round experience I can highly recommend The Slate as one of the best I have ever visited . It is not cheap but given the quality of the food but it is not ridiculously expensive either . Do check in advance before visiting if you can as the The Slate can be busy especially if you are in a group and not just a solo like I was!

The main Sunday beer lunch arrived in good time and was delicious. The best melted in your mouth. Add a great pig in blanket as it is delicious. Great menu and the food was lovely. Duck was perfectly cooked and partner had chicken supreme which was great. Cardamon creme brulee with sorbet was excellent. Please visit when you can.Only downside was a very large party with young kids running about and jumping up and down the stairs. It was later on a Friday night and spoilt the experience. I appreciate that the venue is not responsible for people' behaviour but if trying to create a higher end restaurant then might have to a) ask the respective clientele to control their children and/or b) not accept bookings with kids after a certain time. We have 4 children ourselves and whilst we think we would not let them behave like that, it is really hard to keep them entertained in an adult setting at night. Might be best to prevent the situation up front.

No atmosphere, everything slate grey and looked tired / scuffed, Very quiet at 1.30 pm and yet food seemed to take ages to arrive. I don'y mind waiting for fresh good food but unfortunately the roast beef was as tough as old boots and couldn't be cut ( I noticed the only other couple we could see, had left theirs too after what looked like a fight with it!) Pork was mostly fat. Chips were dry like oven chips. Veg was lovely, cauliflower cheese especially. Staff were not really interested and when they asked ( i don't like complaining) I pointed out about the beef, and they said they'd tell the chef. Didn't see them again after that. Dismal really.

The place was very quiet but service relatively slow. While the food was ‘ok’ the experience was disappointing. The place has been given a facelift and was pleasant but spoilt by the cheap plastic flowers on every table. A word of advice- remove them! If you can’t get real ones it would be better without any at allOverall I felt that more attention needs to be given to customer service - a welcome smile, friendly comments, a cheery goodbye (no-one was anywhere to be seen as we left) - would all cost nothing but would transform a cold hearted experience into a place I would want to return to. As it is I feel reluctant to recommend it.

I booked a table for 19.45pm for four of us, to celebrate my birthday. We arrived on time and waited patiently to be greeted and shown to our table - however unfortunately we had to wait a good 10 minutes before anyone took any notice of us. This was after ringing the bell twice and one of my friends having to actually go up to a waitress to say we were here, despite them having passed and seen us waiting already.By the time they got around to taking a drinks order, it was around 8.10pm. We then asked whether the cocktails were 241 that evening - the waitress said it was only on until 8pm. I kindly pointed out that we would have ordered before 8pm if they would have taken us to our table on time! The bar staff agreed for our first round to be 241. Ordered the shin of Welsh beef. I have previously ate at the Slate and had lovely food however I was very disappointed this time. Not sure what had happened but my meal was VERY salty. Wasn’t able to finish it and left feeling disheartened, especially as it was my birthday we were celebrating! There were two big birthday groups in the restaurant that evening. The waitresses seemed to struggle to attend to the big tables and the other people eating in the restaurant at the same time. I think it would help to get more staff on board as they were obviously struggling. Two positives - our waitress was lovely and very thankful when we pointed out there was a leak from above our heads. Also - cocktails very nice!

On arrival there is plenty of parking and two entrances, (one would be suitable for disabled access into the restaurant). We went to the main entrance at reception and was shown through to our table. While we were waiting for the two other members of our party, we noticed that the restaurant was filling up and it sounded as if it is used by the locals, which is always a good sign! The food was fabulous. We couldn't fault any of it. The service by the friendly staff was great and the venue was lovely too. We will definitely be returning.

Funeral party arrived not greeted. Tea and coffee in flasks Luke warm. Plates of scones with over whipped curdled cream no butter. Scones so dry had to try find someone to ask for some. Not once did anyone come and check us.

Me and my partner booked a table here on a Saturday night on our visit to wales! And I can say I will defiantly be eating here again, the service was exceptional and the food was amazing! Very very tasty and well presented! Definitely worth a visit here!

Called in on the off chance, it looks like it’s been recently done out and finished to a high standard. The food was good, although they did get the order a bit wrong and seems low on staff, so you had to wait a while. But overall nice place

Booked in advance and arrived on time. Waited 15 minutes to be offered a drink, 50 minutes for the starter to arrive and 90 minutes for the main course. When we asked why the delay, we were told that there had more walk-in diners than expected, but the place certainly wasn't heaving. No-one came to explain that the food would take a while. By the time it arrived, we'd lost all appetite and left half our meals. Very unsatisfactory.

We didn’t enjoy our visit here at all. This restaurant has not thought about its vegetarian choices at all. The menu reads very nicely - quite like a gastro pub menu however the standard of food is not even close. Everything was bland. Two of our party had the arancini, which just didn’t taste of anything at all - two big balls of very bland and slightly dry ristotto with nothing else to make the mouthful more interesting. The black pudding starter was very small. The mussels were good. The only vegetarian starter was the bland butternut squash arancini and then for main it was either a ‘burger’ or butternut squash risotto for main. I’m never impressed with vegetarian ‘burgers’ in a place like this so asked if I could have the pea risotto without the chorizo and to swap in cheddar instead of Parmesan. The waitress went to the kitchen to check and assured me that was fine. I was then served a big bowl of the butternut squash risotto. When I queried this, I was told that they couldn’t take the chorizo out of the pea risotto. I’m not quite sure why she had told me they could and then just brought out the risotto I specifically told her I didn’t want, without even mentioning it. All very odd and not great service. On top of that, the risotto was just a big bowl of bland rice; every single mouthful was the same tasteless mush. Usually when vegetables are added into risotto, it is to add flavour and texture. The bits of vegetables cut into this did neither so it was a very poor dinner. I wouldn’t recommend this place at all and absolutely not if you are vegetarian or vegan. I’m so disappointed with our dinner tonight and how much we paid for it. Overpriced food as the quality was so poor. If only the execution of the dishes lived up to the sound of the menu.

Have visited before for lunch but had an evening meal last night in the restaurant. Food was very good and also good value but the service was very poor. There only appeared to be 2 girls waiting on between the restaurant and the bar dining area, they weren't attentive or really helpful and there was a long wait for drinks for everyone in the restaurant apart from a large table of girls who's cocktails seemed to appear as soon as they'd ordered. A young couple walked out after an hours wait for their food-poor things.

Stayed for one night with our daughter who was running in the Menai 1/2 Marathon the next day. The accommodation and food is superb. The bedrooms are tidy and clean and spacious and assist with the overall comfort and standard set by The Slate. Well located on edge of Bangor set away from the A55 and A5 junction. I am a former loco spotter so the close proximity of the Holyhead - Chester railway did not bother me but some folks would have to keep their bedroom windows closed overnight. A bit stifling on a hot summer's night !!

We just come back from a delicious meal at the Slate. There were four of us and the choice on the menu is well spread with enough to please anyone. Prices are reasonable and the food was much better than any chain restaurants you may go to. Being a Wednesday evening, the restaurant was very quiet as we were the only customers there although others were eating in the bar section. If you want good food, good service and a friendly smile, try it.

A sunday lunch that never gets repetitive.Different veg most weeks, cooked to perfection. Not the soggy stuff you get in a carvery. And the Welsh Black Beef sourced locally, cooked medium rare is the Best! (ask for thin slices) I come here most sundays as it has a nice relaxed, no rush, sunday 'feel'. Staff are all very friendly and make you feel welcome. Not many other places in Bangor you can have a quiet pint whilst tucking in to your sunday lunch and watch the footy in HD all at the same time. Highly recommend! Many thanks. See you Sunday

Called sixteen months ago and, despite an excellent lunch decided never to return as an avaricious policy of adding a surcharge to credit card payments was in place. However this was removed so my wife and I took a had a long drive from our location in North Wales and enjoyed an excellent lunch, nicely presented and served in a pleasant environment. It was well worthy the diversion!

Had a lovely lunch here with the wife, I had the Meatball Marinara sandwich which was amazing, and my wife had the fish cakes which she described as the best she's ever had. We highly recommend you check this hidden gem out whenever you are in the area.

I am sorry to put up a bad review, but I’m afraid I have to. It started with a 30 minute wait for the order to be taken and then when the starters arrived one had been forgotten. Then four main meals arrived and the other two came 5 minutes later. Why can’t kitchens deliver all meals at the same time? Finally when deserts came once again one was forgotten also the coffee machine was not working. I think we were unlucky, there was a big party in and I felt the kitchen couldn’t cope. We have heard nothing but good reports but for us it was not a good evening.

Four of us went to the Slate restaurant just out side of Bangor North Wales for a Sunday evening meal. The decor was clean and well presented, the staff were polite helpful and friendly. As it was a Sunday the menu wasn’t large which could have include more vegan/vegetarian dishes. There were no complaints about the first course. I had fish and chips which was one of the nicest that I have eaten. Others had the steak which they enjoyed. The sweet was as nice I had crumble and ice cream.Food prices on the whole were reasonable, but I did think the price of the sweets was a bit on the high side for the amount on the plate.Would I go again, yes of course I would x

Visited the last inn for lunch. Was extremely disappointed, I ordered a ploughman’s. I have eaten here on numerous occasions in the past when in Barmouth. This was one of my favourite lunch time choices. The ploughman’s was always wonderful with Snowdonia cheeses, lovely meat, pate, nice fresh bread, pickled onions, chutney etc.. presented on a large board. This time the price has increased with little choice, only smoked cheese no Snowdonia cheeses, very limited in three items you could choose. The bread was a very cold, dry ciabatta which was just terrible. This is not a ploughman’s anymore!! Washed money will not eat here again extremely expensive, for poor quality food.

We called in for drinks one evening and then for supper the next night. Small selection of starters. Locally produced pate was very good. A good choice of main meals. Prices as expected for a busy holiday spot. Lasagne served with garlic bread but they swapped for chips at no extra charge. We shared a cheese board, good selection of Snowdonia cheeses. A quaint and traditional Inn. We would visit again!
