Had family Sunday lunch here today, was absolutely superb! Pre ordered a special fish dish, whole baked on the bone brill - finest fish dish we ever had! Sunday roast that our son said was the best chicken he has ever had, and a fantastic venison pie. Service was very attentive and friendly, and a great wine menu. 5* Plus!!!!

I visited the Silver Cup earlier this year for a Sunday roast with a friend, and it was so exceptional that I had to bring my boyfriend to experience it. The service was outstanding; the staff are incredibly knowledgeable about the food and the perfect wine pairings. We also enjoyed a few cocktails recommended by the attentive service staff. The interior of the pub is stunning, clearly designed by someone with a keen eye for detail. Every aspect of the decor has been thoughtfully curated, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. We had heard rave reviews about the food and it did not disappoint, The roast was phenomenal - easily the best we've had in years, and we've tried many! I absolutely love this place and can't wait for our next visit.

We went for a birthday meal with friends and unfortunately did not enjoy our experience. The serving staff were very inattentive and seemed to be just chatting at the bar. The tasting menu courses were extremely small, probably why they serve a door step slice of bread and butter for one of the courses! All courses inconsistently sized and served up on different plates/bowls to the rest of the table. Knives too blunt to cut through the tough meat. A good 30 minute wait between courses. Extremely overpriced.

Terrible service. Did not cater for vegetarians. We requested the bill after ordering drinks as we no longer wanted to eat there - the drinks nearly got spilt on one of us by the young waiter. Took 30 minutes to get some water despite asking three times. The menu did not cater for dietary needs. We were then told there would be a charge if we left, despite them not being able to cater for allergies previously stated and a vegetarian. The bar manager initially did not know if they served vegetarian food- they didn’t- what restaurant doesn’t serve food for vegetarians? When the manager finally found out how much the charge would be for us leaving, as he did not initially know this - it was the full cost of a 2 course meal- despite not catering for some of the dietary needs/ providing vegetarian food. The food was fine, one of the party could not eat at all, there was no alternative provided. It was not value for money and the level of service was below par.

Wow , wow , wow what a find and such a brilliant meal we enjoyed for our anniversary last night . We got a lovely warm welcome from Olivia who is very knowledgeable. The cocktails were fantastic . Sat down for amazing food and was blown away . Sourdough with yeast butter was so incredible . Very tasty padron peppers and scotch egg. We shared a sea bass that tasted like it had just been caught and finished with a delicious panna cotta. Lovely rose wine too . We have eaten in a lot of places and this is up there with the best . Chef knows what he is doing and has been able to create amazing flavours . I can’t understand some of the mixed poor reviews on here as we only found excellence in food and service so we will be back again soon .

Arrived with poor customer service and no greeting . Ordered the steak which apparently is 1 kg for 3 People but found out later it was 800 gms for 2 . We were a table of 3. The meat arrived as 8 thin slices and pink after waiting 45 minutes ! Sent some back and waited another 15 minutes for grey dried out steak . Service charge on the meal . No service ! The pub is overated and the meal was one of the worst we have ever eaten . Go to Flat Iron its cheaper and far better!!

The ambience is lacking, food does not live up to exceptional. The menu is inconsistent. Tiny portion of bland food - pigs head with burnt apple sauce was a joke. Half a piece of bread with yeast butter another course. Overall not worth the very expensive price. Very disappointing, would not recommend

The food was nice I had the burrata with pears and mint, and chicken - my husband had the scotch egg and sirloin steak. The room was really noisy and the tables were really crumped together. The tables were scruffy , no tablecloth. I was sit toward the window and the view that I had was the lower part of a parked car. We went there expecting fine dining, but we found nice food and poor environment. Definitely the place does not meet the expectations if you are out for a romantic dine or lunch.

Be sure to read the 48 hour cancellation policy.Despite having a genuine reason for having to cancel, the realities of having an aged Mum living 2 hours away meant it was unavoidable.Their response is one of pure intransigence to the point of smugness.Silver Cup have successfully lost two customers before they could gain them. The telephone goes largely unanswered and they actually have a policy that states they need 72 hours to answer. How much more anti-customer is it possible to be? Shame on you.

Wow, what an evening! We had an amazing time at the Silver Cup, lovely cocktails expertly made in the bar before sitting down to a seven course meal. Every course, from the snack to the dessert was outstanding, everything looked and tasted delicious and the service was spot on. An absolutely fantastic experience from start to finish. Lovely welcoming staff with good banter, not stuffy and happy to explain and offer advice on menu. Also nice to find out it is now run by some locals! Don't trust any of the older reviews, these guys only took it over last year and have given it a proper refurbishment, brought in an excellent chef and lovely staff.Food was to die for, we had the specials, for both starters and mains, and they were worth the supplements. My only recommendation is you book ahead of time, we have tried a few weeks in a row, clearly the cat is out the bag on how great this place is. Couldn't believe our luck for tonight, realised it was because the England match was on that we managed to get a table as the rest of the world was busy.We will be back :)

We booked for lunch at the Silver Cup on the strength of a local review. When I first saw their menu there was a sharp intake of breath at the price: £35 for two courses and £37 for three (excluding coffee). A smaller menu than two other independents in the town, with a choice of several dishes for starters & main course, plus a “special” for each course at an extra cost. Today’s special was oysters & steak tartare to start and a pork roast for mains.Any comparison ends there, though. Although other restaurants in Harpenden are perfectly respectable, the Silver Cup walks away with every prize going as far as we’re concerned. The menu looks interesting but gives no clue as to the quality of either the ingredients or the standard of cooking, both of which are streets ahead of anywhere else local, including such “fine dining” places such as L’Auberge du Lac or Luton Hoo. They’re more on a par with the standard at Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons which has annoyed us for some time, ever since they adopted a policy of serving only a 5-course lunch for somewhere in the region of £100 which isn’t necessarily what one wants. It's re-opened after lock-down having been supplying us with the best takeaway burgers'n chips we've ever tasted during the bleak winter months when we weren't allowed to set foot in the door. Folks, you have to go there. The food is simply outstanding, and even though it's difficult to recruit waiting staff at the moment, and they're rushed off their feet (particularly today when there was a crowd in to watch The Match) we had absolutely no complaints about the service which was prompt without rushing us, and friendly, Michael's Mama Jo was helping out and was extremely helpful with any queries we had. She picked up on one of our party being a birthday girl and had her pudding plate inscribed with "Happy Birthday" in chocolate! Matt the Chef produced the most brilliant Sunday roasts for mains (beef, pork and chicken) as well as two fish dishes and a risotto. Starters were as per menu online with added specials of oysters and steak tartare, served as it should be with an egg yolk. That's a small point to some, but these days it's rare in this country that a)there's an opportunity to have a steak tartare and b)that it comes with the yolk. Puddings (in spite of my best intentions...) also wonderful. Just go! As soon as possible! (You know you want to...)Recently they've suffered some no-shows and last-minute cancellations; I can only commiserate with those who cancelled, for what they missed out on, and hope they re-book. We most certainly will; the Silver Cup certainly deserves to have a full dining room at every sitting. Congratulations to Michael & Matthew!

So here’s the thing. The Silver Cup has an old reputation of decentish pub grub. But since the new owners have gotten their hands on it, it has become something rather special. A unique menu that mixes flavours of truffle with deep beefy dishes, creamy celeriac with fish freshly caught - and the omg’ness of pumpkin ice cream? And that’s not even expressing the perfection of the arancini balls, which quite frankly having spent time in Italy, you’d be pushed to find better. If you want a hidden gem, this is it. If you’re used to menus that open the palate from new and familiar dishes to a London’esque maturity - look no further. Strong leadership in the kitchen and front of house firmly concrete The Silver Cup as the new place to eat, see and be seen. I’m impressed.

A friend had recommended The Silver Cup and explained it had new owners and a revamp. We went for lunch and although the menu is small, don’t let this put you off because the food was exceptional. I’m not a fan of walnuts so I asked for the pickled walnuts to be “on the side” of my beef cheek dish. They won me over. The richness of the beef with the pickled walnut was such a great balance. Our waitress was very informative, I was able to try a red before I chose which one I would like by the glass. Fantastic customer service. Covid compliant, hand sanitizers on every table. A one way system inside the pub that works well. Bathrooms were very clean. Light and airy decor. We asked about the pub being dog friendly as we live in Redbourn and often walk to local pubs. Again the waitress was very accommodating about whereabouts in the pub dogs are allowed and what table to request if we are wishing to eat and bring our dog. From start to finish, our lunch experience was faultless. Thank you and we will be back.

Another stopover continuing our bar crawl in Harpenden. Very old pub, even down to the décor - all that was missing was the 90s smoke you used to get. Not many people inside the venue - actually just one when we arrived at 10:30pm. After our drinks, we all decided to organise an uber to our next destination - we thought we will wait outside, the last member of our party followed us outside and then decided they wanted to use the toilet, when he went to open the door - they had locked us out. Lucky for us the uber wasn't too far away from the venue. I just found it funny how they locked us out when there were still people in the venue....

Food took a while to come but that was fine as we weren't in a rush. When it did arrive however it was cold, the fries terribly so. I therefore politely requested that they be changed for hot fresh ones. Our server, who I believe was also the manager or supervisor, touched the fried with his bare hands and agreed. We were left with our burgers and so I assumed they would be quick. This was not the case, and so by the time they had arrived, we had finished our burgers. I communicated this was disappointing and not acceptable, and I was met with only rudeness and attitude. I quote, "Do you want the fries or not?". I was absolutely dumbfounded by the lack of acceptance of the inconvenience and error, and also the rudeness. Such a shame, the burgers were nice and we had enjoyed coming here as a family. I won't be going back. I accept mistakes happen, and so I judge on how they are dealt with. This was one massive fail. Sack whoever this incompetent manager with zero customer service skills is. I'd put him on toilet cleaning duty only!

Another great meal at the Cock. Service was great and even though the pub was busy, it wasn’t too noisy in the restaurant.

Ordered the fish and chips the server was very nice and professionally when it arrived it was all over cooked batter and little fish, when the server called over the Manager he took the food to the kitchen and the cook, according to the Manager said that it was fine. When I told the Manager that I didn't want it he showed no interest at all and his manner was that he couldn't care less and was not bothered, I have been going to this pub for years but will not be going back and will advise my friends to do the same.

The Engineer is my goto pub when I am in Harpenden. They are a very nice car park, and although the area is perfectly safe, it is nice to leave your car safe. I entered the bar to a friendly welcome and was shown to a nice table in minutes. A drink was ordered and delivered quickly, and I was given the list of the day’s specials, all of which sounded good but I had my heart set on more standard fare. I ordered the burger and chips and very shortly after a nicely decorated plate appeared. The burger was well cooked but succulent, the chips crispy and hot; add tomato sauce and it was heaven on a plate. At some point a member of staff appeared to check everything was ok and got a thumbs up. A few minutes after I had finished, the plate was removed and I was asked if I could be tempted with the dessert menu, everyone one knows there is always room for pudding. I ordered the brownie. When ordering the burger I had mentioned that I was intolerant to wheat, and staff automatically switched me to the gluten free brownie. To my delight it tasted wonderful (many don’t). Again the staff left me alone to enjoy my pudding. Shortly after I had scraped the plate clean, a member of staff asked if I wanted any else, I was happily full, so just the bill. The staff have mastered being there when you want them, otherwise leaving you alone to enjoy the meal. I am looking forward to my next visit to Harpenden so I have an excuse for lunch in the Engineer.
