The Shore in Edinburgh, City of

I'm not giving it 0 stars because I can't. We went because of the place's good rating, but they literally kicked us out for bringing a baby. They told us there was a table, but the stroller wouldn't fit. I told them it was no problem, that we could fold the stroller and sit the child in a highchair, it plenty fitted. It wouldn't bother the people around us or the waiters, but they didn't care. They responded in a very rude manner, with an unfriendly expression, as if they had no interest in having children in their restaurant. They didn't look for any alternative or solution, just wanted us to get out of their sight as soon as possible. I can't rate the food, but I can rate the service, which was terrible. I advise you not to go if you have children.

The sauce with the oysters is pure witchcraft. Had the fish pie too. Next level. Someone in a previous review complained it was too runny. Whaaat? Nonsense. It was perfect. Great service too. My new most favourite pub/restaurant in Edinburgh.

Three weeks ago we stumbled in this pub while walking around Edinburgh and we looked for a table for 3 without booking it... and there was one available! Nice little place, with live music (the guy playing piano was pretty good!). What to say? Great food, great atmosphere, good beer and nice service. Do you really need more? ;-) Price is similar to other premises of the same level around the city. In our case it was around 30-40£ per person.

First time there and certainly not my last so relaxing and the food was fantastic also had some of the home made gingerbread superb highly recommend

Very tasty "Fish'n Chips". In this context, the chips are potato wedges and are completely hidden by the size of the fish😉.

Call in one evening for a drink loved the quirky little pub great atmosphere and good music and the food smelt delicious but we’d eaten earlier, so went back next evening didn’t book, and they were fully booked we were devastated, but the staff were very accommodating and the head chief squeezed us in, the meal was amazing made our weekend. Only thing is I advise booking ahead. We will definitely return when we go to Edinburgh again.

Fine Fish and Cips restaurant, but other good and tasty dishes. Prices slightly above average. As well as serving dinner or lunch, the venue also offers a warm pub for an aperitif.

The very best meal I’d had the pleasure to eat in many a moon. Wonderful setting and impeccable service … perhaps strange to say, but reminded me a little of eating at The French House pub in Soho, London. Calamari were crumbed to perfection (crisp panko bite, tender, moist flesh within), Fish Pie was exquisitely balanced… I don’t normally rave about desserts but the crème brûlée with passion fruit blew my mind.

Wonderfull atmospheric pub, lovely restaurant, amazing food, great staff and sometimes great live music. If your in leith it's a must.

Love the bar grape service friendly staff food reasonably priced good selection of beers wines and whiskeys. Jazz sessions on Sundays and Thursday special good but well worth booking

Accueil très agréable, un dimanche à 14h passé, sans réservation. Un fish and chips délicieux, croustillant et brûlant, poisson moelleux et parfaitement cuit, pommes de terre en quantité, mayonnaise lambda mais pas mauvaise.

Este es un lugar muy relajante con buen ambiente de pub. El pastel de pescado era excelente, lleno de pescado y gambas. Empezamos con los mejillones que eran los mejores que había probado en siglos. Fresco y regordete (los mejillones, no yo! ) muy recomendable

Very characteristic restaurant/pub in the Leith district, we showed up for dinner without having booked and sat down at the counter and after a short while they found us a table, really kind. The menu offering is made up of typical local dishes with various openings towards a more modern and European cuisine. However, we tasted the fish & chips, very tasty and crunchy, and the mussels, also tasty, especially the ones at the bottom soaked in the typical stew. Note of merit for the form of camembert with honey and walnuts, a real pleasure with all its little accompaniments on the side, highly recommended!!! End dinner with a good glass of whisky, given the choice it's worth it (and the wine list is also surprisingly extensive). Average prices for the place.

Ristorante/pub molto caratteristico nel quartiere di Leith, ci siamo presentati per la cena non avendo prenotato e ci siamo sistemati sul bancone e dopo poco ci hanno trovato un tavolo, veramente gentili. L’offerta del menù è composta dai tipici piatti locali con diverse aperture verso una cucina più moderna ed europea. Abbiamo comunque assaggiato il fish&chips, molto saporito e croccante, e le cozze, anche loro gustose, specialmente quelle in fondo a bagno nel tipico guazzetto. Nota di merito per la forma di camembert con miele e noci, una vera goduria con tutti i suoi piccoli accompagnamenti a lato, straconsigliato!!! Concludete la cena con un buon bicchiere di whisky, vista la scelta ne vale la pena (ed anche la carta dei vini è sorprendentemente ampia). Prezzi nella media del luogo.

I must say -- this was our most disappointing dinner during our recent visit to Edinburgh. While the food (chorizo pasta) was good, the two beers we tasted were not up to the mark. We ended up ordering Guinness -- always a safe choice. The service was so disastrous that we asked the optional tip to be removed from the bill. At one point the waitress tried to take our plates away while my wife was still finishing her dinner. I am unsure if this was by mistake, but this is not acceptable.

Spectacular service, very attentive, beer 🍻 very good and we ordered Fish and chips great, very good, highly recommended, oh and live Jazz music in the background, the girl who served us Ana and her partner were very attentive.

This is a fantastic restaurant/bar with great staff and excellent cooking. The onion soup was amazing and worth every mile we travelled to get there (over 200!) and the seabass was perfectly cooked with a knockout sauce. In fact the cooking is top quality and well accomplished and the prices deliver great value for money. Add in the lovely staff, the local pub feel and decent beer and you've got a cracking experience - what's not to love, go you'll love it

Chose this spot for our last meal before heading back to Canada as I used to converse with my mum many years ago. Have to say I was really happy with the choice, fish pie was rich and tasty, seafood linguine was lovely as was the sole. Tasty deserts to follow and all for a reasonable price - well done folks for a great place that has stayed great over many years Rob

These guys had the best fish and chips I have ever had. The fish was full and fluffy. The beer batter was perfect: the outside was crispy while the inside was light. It was cooked the right amount of time, not too dark or oil too used. The chips were actual cut as chips of potatoes and not fries. I have had fish and chips all over the world and this is definitely worth everyone’s stop.

Con los niños son encantadores y son bienvenidos a pesar de que no es un sitio de niños, cuidan cada detalle para que ellos esten cómodos. La comida es de 10, lo único los postres que son un poco caros y el que probamos nosotros no era tan especial como el resto de la comida ( una de las tartas). La atención de los camareros es de 10, preocupados en todo momento porque todo este correcto y te sientas bien. Calidad precio perfecta. Ubicación perfecta. El restaurante es muy clásico y bonito.

Popped in last week as I’ve decided to grow up and buy a place in the city. First time back in some 5 years. The establishment has lost none of its charm, staff are still super, food and drink are on point and the atmosphere is, just right. If it wasn’t for certain circumstances, I would be here weekly when I move into the new digs.

Great staff and lovely atmosphere. We just went for a quick drink at the bar, but the live jazz music (and the smell of the food and drinks) made us wanted to come back soon

After we got of the hop on/hop off bus at the Royal Yacht Brittannia, we walked to the small harbour of Leith. There we spotted The Shore. Almost fully packed and we had no reservation. The very kind staff gave us a nice table for 4 and we had a great lunch. First some delicious mussles to share and as main twice the fish and chips, the sea bass and a seafood linguine! If you’re around, go and vist The Shore!

Ci abbiamo pranzato dopo la visita al Britannia. Locale molto caratteristico, frequentato da locals. Il proprietario molto cordiale, gentili anche le cameriere. Buono il fish and chips che abbiamo assaggiato in entrambe le versioni (classico e con panatura più croccante). Forse leggermente caro per quello che abbiamo mangiato ma in generale l'esperienza è stata positiva.

I recently dined at this restaurant and had mixed feelings about the overall experience. The starters were absolutely delicious, setting high expectations for the rest of the meal. However, the mains fell short. The fish pie, while flavorful, was disappointingly runny. It was so liquid that we had to use a spoon instead of a fork. Despite its good taste, the consistency was off-putting. The wine selection, on the other hand, was excellent, with a variety of high-quality options that complemented our meal well. Unfortunately, the dessert was another letdown. We ordered a cheesecake, but it lacked the signature texture and flavour of cheese, resembling more of a double cream. It missed the mark entirely. In summary, while the starters and wine were highlights, the fish pie and cheesecake left much to be desired.

Very disappointed that the jazz band did not turn up for the Sunday jazz lunch advertised. We had booked well in advance and travelled from south Glasgow for a family get together The staff apologised and gave us a free bottle of wine, which was appreciated, but it took over an hour to tell us the band would not be coming, by which time we were already half way through lunch. Poor show

Myself and my husband went for a meal, we ordered haddock and chips but we were definitely served whiting fish!! Shame as the rest of the meal was lovely.

Incredible food and service. Artisan crafted bread with garlic & herbs spread, a starter of mussels, and salmon with fettuccine. Outstanding. Great price. No wonder the place was packed on a Monday night!

We ordered baked oysters. They were way too salty for us. I got sole fish. I had to sent it back cause I didn’t like it and got scollops instead. But still it wasn’t my taste. But the service was very good. I don’t think I would go back. Sorry.

Ate here in July. Food was very good, service was excellent (thank you Sharon). We has the seabass 🐟 and the fish pie 🥧 both delicious. There also live music. Reservation is recommended as place was full.

What a hidden gem here in Leith! Quite possibly the best brown onion soup I’ve ever had! And the mussels were divine! Sharon and Keith were my servers and were so nice and welcoming! If you are ever in Leith, please give this place a try!

Nice surroundings and good food. I had mussels which were tasty and generous portion. The interior felt a little bit old and outdated, but perhaps this is intentional as you get the vibe of an old seaside pub. The food and wine were nice though.

Beautiful day, and eating here was the best decision we have made. The staff are very personable as well as helpful. I had the scallop dish, which was phenomenal, and one of the best dishes I have had in a long time. My friend had the fish pie, while steaming hot, the flavors were amazing and well balanced. 2 truly amazing dishes. The fish and chips that the wives had were absolutely huge, but fresh and well cooked. Definitely a place to go for an amazing meal. The Jazz music was especially comforting and relaxing.

Step back in time when you walk into this classy bar. The mirrors, piano, bar, and cozy seating are welcoming and nostalgic. The bartender is perfect and welcomed the locals that came in. I went in between lunch and dinner, there weren’t many people. Also, glanced at the dining area behind the bar. I think you’d need to make a reservation for dinner. They also have outdoor seating. I would love to come back for dinner, the hour I spent there drinking my glass of wine was delightful.

The place is divided in a pub and restaurant part, both serving the same food and drinks. Also a nice terrace outside in the sunshine in the evening, looking out over the boats and small square. The pub part was very cosy and the food was very good. I had two waiters almost having a competition of serving me the fastest :-D They were both very friendly and attentive. Recommended!

Amazing staff, food, ambience, wine, just adore everything about this place, we had a perfect Friday night here , the mussels were divine, as was my lemon sole, the other five all loved their choices too, the wines were superb, just love it here so much, thank you to all the lovely friendly and helpful staff and the chefs ! A truly special place .

I have been visiting The Shore for over 20 years and it offers a consistent standard of food and service. Still my all time favourite in Leith.

Great place full of atmosphere and Bloody Mary’s to die for !

Booked after looking for recommendations on TripAdvisor and based on location and was not disappointed. Traditional pub with small dining room (can also eat in the bar). Small but perfectly formed menu with a couple of daily specials with fish but also some meat options. Service was really nice, attentive but not OTT. I had the mussels starter in the sherry and chilli sauce and they were honestly the most delicious things! Fish pie next with extra prawns was piping hot and also delicious. Hubby had the goats cheese and then the steak - both very good. We shared a pud and that too was gorgeous. The bill was very reasonable, it has a service charge automatically added but we were asked if we were happy with that as we paid. Overall a delicious meal and would recommend. It felt like a really special night.

Very friendly bar. We ate very well. The prices are, however, a little high. But I think this is due to the neighborhood having become a little bohemian in recent years.

We ate on the Pub side in order to stay in the atmosphere of the port and the neighborhood, a bit bohemian compared to my memory 30 years ago😅. Very good pub, refined bistro type cuisine. Basically £68 for 2 dishes, 2 beers and 1 dessert. Large selection of whiskey for lovers. Good choice if you are in the area.

Fabulous service and atmosphere. The food was out of this world. Wonderful choice and beautifully cooked. Everything on my plate had a delicious depth of flavour and was cooked to perfection. I've never enjoyed a piece of fish like the ones we ate. Succulent and sooooo tender. The location along the waterside reminded us of the neu haven in Copenhagen. I can't wait to return.

Worst customer service in Edinburgh. Would not recommend. Was told by the bar man that he has ‘very little patience’ whilst taking our order, he didn’t want us there as soon as we walked through the door, at 7:30pm on a Saturday evening. Also we were ‘told’ that we had ordered another Guinness and it was brought to our table, when we said we did not order it, it was brought back insisting that we did, and then made to pay for it even though we had been paying for drinks up front. Also glasses were trying to be cleared when we had not finished the drinks. And finally, like most places now had the service charge automatically added when it did not warrant it.

Fabulous food. Every layer of my cod dish had different and outstanding depth of flavours. Service was so friendly but impeccable. Atmosphere was relaxed, warm and fun.

Went on a Sunday jazz afternoon which creates wonderful background ambience. Lovely old pub. From the outside you would probably walk passed and go to the alternatives in the area but it was a recommendation from a local girl on the train. Inside very authentic with a wonderful wood bar, strangely French in style. Food was excellent, could have eaten most things on the menu. Local seafood was fresh and delicious. Waiting staff were amazing, so attentive and friendly. If visiting Leith and / or royal yacht Britannia, a must. Would say that the mushy peas were very pureed which was unusual.

I spent 8 days on the east coast of England and Scotland. This fish and chips was another level. I never met it's equal. The breading was crisp and light and stayed that way after vinegar and lemon. The fish was tender and flavorful. It was easy to eat, each piece coming off easily but cohesive. The tartar sauce was balanced, tart, and creamy. The chips were also prefect crisp and buttery soft on the inside. This the pinnacle of fish and chips. Few might match it, but no one surpasses it. Plus, the vibe of the place is great and the service was topnotch. The Shore hits the mark on every thing.

Friendly and efficient staff serving great food

Excellent meal. The duck and its accompaniment were succulent. The waitresses were warm and attentive. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Only called in for a drink but was made to feel very welcome. Good atmosphere and lovely surroundings. The gentleman running the bar seemed to treat everbody that came in as a valued customer.

I ate the best fish & chips in the whole kingdom here! The Shore has two guest rooms, right at the entrance with a bar and a cozy pub atmosphere and another room with a brighter restaurant atmosphere. We sat on the pub side by the fire and as it was a little cold outside we found this very pleasant. Back to fish & chips: This was the most tender fish I've ever been served and the chips were very crispy and tasty. Absolute recommendation! We were served very friendly.

We had a fantastic meal at the Shore Bar for our 1st anniversary. The restaurant is small and cosy. Even though it was was full, it still felt like a very intimate dinner. The mussels were delicious and the bowl was so full it's plenty to share. We don't like garlic and they cooked them without which made them even better. The Seabass and Shrimp was faultless, loved it. I ordered the ice cream and got 3 big scoops which was plenty to share. Loved everything about it, my husband said the Leith Pilot Lager was a beautiful pint too. We will definitely be back.

We only meant to pop in for one drink but because everyone was so welcoming, we bought some nibbles and then had another drink. Staff were lovely, as were the nibbles, so we decided to try the main menu. That was terrific too. What should have been 30min turned out to be 2hrs. Can't recommend highly enough. Great people, great service and great food.
