Staff treat you better if you are one of their regular cronies. A bit scheme like… Staffs act as if they have never had a detailed conversation with you in the last week when their mates are about. The two faced north… UPDATE Very much Greenbook territory. If you have colour, avoid.

Great food on a decent list, and a good choice of beers

Reminds me of US bars, pre craft beer when the wonders of Belgium, Germany and England were king. Homey feel, nothing fussy just clearly done with lots of love for the beers and customers. Visiting from London it's apparent what an asset as a community hub this is. Hearty food offer from the kitchen of One Pan Band really satisfying, the curry wurst sausage was a banger. Constantly rotating cask selection will make any beer lover or CAMRA member happy. Absolutely back first thing the next time we visit Liverpool!

Great vibes, great food, great atmosphere. Loaded fries and Scouse were delicious!

Calm atmosphere. I went on a Tuesday, so I'm not sure if that's how it is always (especially on weekends). If so, then it's perfect for an introvert who only wants to sit in a corner and read a book (they have books inside!). No loud music at all. It's like having a drink onboard an ancient ship library. I also highly recommend trying their beef Scouse.

Brilliant beer selection, cask and keg, with a wide bottle choice for taking away. Try a Belgian beer if you get a chance.

Great ad. Came to buy local beers by the bottle to take away. They were sorry not to help us, having their local beers on tap. Despite everything, a beer that they had in stock was kindly offered and a tasting of two IPAs (Carnival and Tempo) which were excellent. Thank you guys. 👍🏼

Regular visitor to the S &M when in town. Great, famous pub. Very decent food and very friendly staff.

Great selection of Belgian beers and wonderful food

It's more of a pub than a place to eat although the food they serve is great. If you want to eat quietly this is not the place but if you like the British pub atmosphere and want to eat it will be great. The fish and chips are the best I've ever had and the stew is pretty good too, plus the price is not bad. Abundant portions.

Great Liverpool welcome. Amazing selection of ales and a very generous deal on malt whiskies(and even some premium selections round the corner for a nominal extra) . Paul and the rest of the bar staff made us feel right at home! Keep it going everyone x

A big range of different European beers on tap, draught and in bottles. Felt like a real pub, not a plastic boozer you find a lot of the time in city centres. Worth a walk of you are staying nearby. Did not eat here but know people who have and have really recommended the food.

The food, for England, quite good. Very good Scouse. Of course, cleaning, like all of England, is a bit of a problem.

Love coming here for a fun Thursday night pub quiz or for a casual outing. Relaxed, and friendly atmosphere and staff always helpful. Food here is boss, highly recommend the beef scouse. Huge range of beers, and they do a nice Guinness too. One of Liverpools classic pubs.

Good old school pub, great food. Prices very competitive and the selection of beer and food is sound. It's got a proper community vibe. Just want to update this: I don't drink anymore, and their 0% selection is VERY decent. Enjoyed the Jever, 0.5%. So even my niche market is respected in this classic pub. My fav in the city centre. Need to try their Scouse

A revisit to an old haunt. Did not disappoint. Had a great choice of real ales. The pub also has a great selection of Belgium beers either to drink or take away. The food is provided by a seperate company which is quite novel. It is a small select menu. The food is absolutely delicious and has good-sized portions. I had Haggis, Neeps, and Tatties. The Neeps were cubed and roasted, which was a change from the sloppy stuff. Well done. Looking forward to visiting again.

Good old-fashioned pub with a great selection of real ale. Called in for a bite to eat a good pint. While the food was lacking in the "five a day day" department, and maybe a bit heavy-handed on the salt, it was very tasty, very reasonably priced and just what was needed on a cold winter's day. Both the macaroni cheese on fries and the ham hock rarebit on sourdough can be recommended! And the sraff were lovely! Well worth seeking out.

Always a great place for drinks!

Used to go here years ago when living in Liverpool and have ventured back a couple of times more recently. Loads of good beers available, friendly service and they still have the lesser spotted quiz machine!

Simply a gem in the heart of Liverpool. We entered almost by chance, escaping the rain. To our surprise we found ourselves in a wonderful traditional British pub, with a wide variety of beers. The atmosphere was wonderful, incredible people wanting to have a good time. We even learned to play darts with another group of people.

I liked the large choice. It was super stuff. If I ever enter the Liverpool again, I'll make a monumental effort to drink from their inappropriate glass vessels. Getting the wrong glass was hilario TBH.

Customer service A1 Sent a message to ask if they sold beers to go as needed a last minute gift for my husband. Replied really quickly to advise had an array to choose from for takeaway. Called in on my lunch break and was helped by the brilliant staff and I think the owner who was very knowledgeable in helping me make my selection. I left with 3 beers a pint glass. I know my husband will be made up with them tomorrow. We will definitely visit for drinks when we come out to Liverpool in the future.

Good little pub, was only in for one drink so didn't experience alot. But what I saw was very nice looking food, good variety in drinks and snacks. Friendly staff. Would recommend

Best pub food in the city by a mile

This is a proper drinkers pub. I didn't eat but I really wish I had because it looked incredible frankly. The real ale is good and there's a load of choice. It's a CAMRA real ale place and loved by students. There was a quiz on when I went on Thursday.

Lovely evening spent in the Ship & Mitre for a drink and some food. I enjoyed Delirium Red on tap along with a delicious bowl of beef scouse. Staff are friendly and it was a classic pub atmosphere - very lovely indeed

The food was very good and surprisingly so given that we went in quite late on a Friday. I would definitely return.

Love the Ship and have been going every Thursday night for 7 years - my favourite pub however, the last 2 weeks we’ve been close to walking out because of the amount of flies buzzing around the tables going for our food and drinks. Really hope this is sorted out

It's my favourite pub in Liverpool. Great memories from the mid 80s whilst at uni. It hasn't really changed too much although it now has a much broader and more fabulous selection of beers.

Utter dive too expensive and rude abrupt staff just daft cocky kids kept out the shower three years.

A must go to bar, with a huge range of cask and keg beers. The food is excellent too.

What a fantastic little pub right in the centre of Liverpool great service and the food was amazing I will definitely be returning to this place on my next visit. Fruli Strawberry beer on tap and the Ham,Egg and chips was the best I've had for a very long time.

Traditional pub with an extensive range of different beers on offer. Beers range from £3 upwards. Recommend Fruli which is always on tap here. Staff are friendly and it's always bustling and can be tricky to get a seat. The kitchen has a variety of visiting chefs and the food is always excellent. We've had Bao and One Pan Band and both chefs food is delicious.

What a pub this is. Great to discover this jewel of Liverpool for real ale drinkers. For people of a certain age, this is a "proper" pub. It's not all gastro, trendy and uncomfortable. It's welcoming, 'lived in' and traditional. It has a huge array of beers on cask, keg and in bottles if you like the Abbey/Trappist stuff. Not confined in the styles they offer, this place must really shift its beer and can therefore offer all the styles going. A must visit spot for real ale lovers and I'm told the food is also good. I'll be back to try that asap 😍🍻🎉

Brilliant pub, with an excellent selection of regularly changing beers. Heavily recommended for anyone in Liverpool.

Been going to the ship for probably 30 years, and it's not changed a lot. OK, they used to have gas lamps which smelt like the whole place would explode with the hint of a spark, but now all safe and electric... The food is similar, ordered from the hatches as you come in from Dale Street, and the bars look the same. The rear area is where the more craft kegs are located, plus a few more handpulls, and is much quieter and comfier. A cracking pub with a lot to offer in all areas, although the beer range seems to be a bit more restrained recently and the food isn't available as much hence 4 stars, but if I could have given 4.5 then I would have!
