Excellent food, friendly staff, lovely old pub. There were 5 of us and each found our meal to be home cooked, very fresh and delicious. 3 of us had liver and bacon with mashed pots and broccoli, and agreed it was the best we’d ever had outside home!

We had the wake after my mum’s funeral and we were more than happy with everything. The buffet was beautiful and plenty of lovely fresh food. There was plenty of helpful staff so we never had to wait long to get a drink. Thoroughly recommend

Wonderful food and atmosphere. Amazing “old English” surroundings. Scott & Sarah were wonderful hosts and made us feel very welcome.

After a walk in the area went in here for a drink and lunch. To be charged nearly £6 for a pint of coke when the beer was less than £5 a pint was insulting. The cheeseburger I had was only just cooked and the piece of processed, plastic cheese it was topped with was a let down. The chips were, however, really good.

The lunch menu is very varied but we were in a hurry so ordered 2 jacket potatoes, a coke and a coffee. The food took 50 minutes to arrive (I went up to enquire about it after waiting 45 minutes) and the potatoes were only half cooked (microwaved but not finished off in the oven so hard inside). They did have a party of cyclists in but the man who served us didn’t say the order would be delayed. They overcharged me by just under £5. (£4.80 I think) I didn’t query it at the time as we had to rush off but I emailed them the next day. They admitted overcharging me and said I could pop in that day to collect my money. I asked them to put it in their charity tin. They also said ‘apologies for the delay too’. They didn’t comment on the fact that I’d told them the food was undercooked (they would have seen that we’d left three quarters of both the potatoes) and tbh they didn’t sound very sorry. It’s a shame as my daughter recently moved to the area and we thought it might be a great local. We now feel more inclined to go to the other local for lunch in future.

Went in on a cycling route to have a couple of drinks. Arrived and the barman acted like it was a hassle us being there, another customer even criticised how our drinks weren't ‘nice and simple’ like his, when we ordered a lager and a rum and coke. Moved away from the bar where several locals were espousing lazy racist views to play cards. Told by the miserable bartender that they usually don't allow cards, and when we wondered why he seemed to mumble incomprehensibly that ‘some people look don't like it’. Incredibly hostile environment, having worked in pubs through my adolescence I was always glad and relived when new faces wandered in on a Monday night. Deeply bizarre experience with a rude and disinterested barman. There are several other pubs in the area which don't treat you with such disdain, go to them!

I go here regularly with my girlfriend and her family when we're out to visit from London. Matt, the landlord and landlady, and the bar team are always welcoming. It can get lively when there's a decent game of football on, and that's what we often go for. Quality well-priced Guinness (with shamrock) and decent beers. You don't get many pubs like this any more - original features, a nice open fire to warm you up on a cold night and heaters out back.

My wife and I often drink coffee in various Costas and enjoy them. We have decaf coffee and usually coconut milk latte. We went to the Costa in Shenfield and ordered the above. It was so weak it was like drinking hot milk. My wife complained and the server very kindly put an extra shot of coffee in each cup, but not much difference. £8 wasted.

Friendly local pub. Lovely food with lots of choice (portions too big for me) and pleasant staff. Will definitely be going back soon.

Closed down, don't waste your time coming. Brentwood council is currently executing a gentrification program against its constituents in Brentwood.
