The Shambles Fish & Chip Shop in Craven

We visited this chippy twice on our four nights stay about ten miles from Settle. We both had the Small fish and chips special what i thought was excellent value. We both had as an extra a tub of fruity curry sauce which was lovely . So much so we had the same order for our second visit. The young lady who served me was really pleasant and friendly. She also served me again the second time and was really nice asking how my holiday had been etc. If i’m ever up this way again i will definitely pay a visit.

We have been coming here for years and years and travel well over an hour and half to come and visit. Today was extremely upsetting and due to the extremely rude, server serving us I won’t return unless she doesn’t work there anymore. After simply asking why two of the same size portions of chips looked like less in one and more in the other she instantly became angry, rude and verbally abusive very loudly in the shop. It was a genuine question and after explaining in the most loud, aggressive and rude manner which she could have just explained politely because we asked politely, we then left. The time previous to that I got lovely chips and the lady with me got a few chips and mainly hard small scraps and we left and said nothing about that. Then on leaving she started talking about us to another customer saying ‘they always do that’ - we visit every few months!! It is a shame because the owners are so so lovely and the chips are too, but you - you absolutely are an embarrassment to the shop and do NOT fit in with how they are. How on earth were you raised seriously?!! Go and learn some manners and how to communicate with people because that - isn’t it. How dare you talk to any customer that way. You’d be better suited to a job away from the public. If that were my business I would never let you affect my trade that way. You’re an absolute liability and your attitude is gutter trash.

Not being from this area, I didn’t know fish and chips meant haddock rather than cod. I’d ordered and paid but then realised and double-checked. The girls there were very offhand and unhelpful. She said she would put in a cod. What I got was definitely not cod and was the most disgusting-looking thing I’d ever seen. I went in to ask and she said it is cod. I tried to eat it and it just wasn’t cod. It was the flattest, smallest piece of fish ever and I’d been charged £8.50. In the end I went in a third time and handed it back to them. No refund offered and they just turned their back on me and walked away. Disgusting food and disgusting service. What a waste of money! I had to go elsewhere.

Used to serve lovely food gone downhill service is terrible they don't answer the phone just let it ring and ring if your lucky enough not to get line busy very disappointing

Called here after I did a walk in the Yorkshire Dales and these fish and chips are really nice.They cook them fresh to order but I wasn't waiting long.I sat on a bench outside in the sunshine which is a perfect way to enjoy them,highly recommended !

Very friendly man with a good sense of humour and the service time was very good too! The food was lovely and filling. Lastly, the price was fair so I would defo recommend this chippy. 9/10 from me :) P.S: try the tower burger-it is lovely.

Visited this little fish & chip shop whilst on holiday in Yorkshire, the food was delicious and the Chinese curry made it even better! The gentleman who served us was very kind, welcoming and friendly. He had a great sense of humour as well as great customer service! Affordable prices for some lovely food. Would definitely recommend!

We visited this fish and chip shop specifically to buy cod and chips; where we live only haddock is available. The two ladies serving were friendly and chatted to us and another couple who were also visiting Settle while we waited for our order.

Good little place , was absolutely starving and it wasn’t bad at all , not oily and fresh fish , would recommend if you find yourself on the area and want some fish and chips 7/10

This chippy is a stalwart of Settle town centre. A good old fashioned fish and chip shop in a great location.

Really nice chippy in the centre of town. Food was freshly cooked to order. Staff were really nice and friendly. Chips were the best I've had in ages and the haddock was lovely. Reasonably priced too. Just to echo what one of the other reviewers said about being suitable for vegetarians, a man came in while I was waiting and asked about that and the woman behind the counter confirmed chips and fish/meat are cooked separately and in vegetable oil. Really nice, will be back next time I'm in the area.

There are two entrances/ exits and customers were arriving from both sides and we were all confused as a sign in the middle said to 'queue here...', staff did not alert us but there was a relay of each prior customer passing information on reassuring that: 'they said it is alright at both sides' every so often the female assistant shouted'who's next?!'. The male assistant greeted with a smile asking' any fish?' and put them in freshly to fry. All delicious and only marred by the female staff member who was particurlarly unpleasant at times and as I entered was grimacing at the male customer before me as he joked about not understanding her Yorkshire accent. Also, whilst offering the chips for me to salt and vinegar, then separately the fish and consequently wrapping up with paper but when I asked (and pointed) which way she was putting the portions on the top and bottom (so that I would know mine had lots more vinegar, barely any salt, as opposed to the opposite) when distributing outside afterwards, she bellowed in front of the packed shop:'i don't know what you are talking about!' So loud that my husband heard it as he waited outside! Shortly afterwards a potential customer shouted from the opposite door at 7p.m. 'What time are you closing?' To which she shouted'NOW'. Not for the faint hearted here.

We called one evening. The fish and chips were ok, but the service is abysmal. We waited 20 minutes and there were only 2 people infront of us. People joining the queue were walking away after an unacceptable wait.

Great friendly service today - we asked if the chips were vegetarian and were informed that not only are they cooked vegetable oil but in a separate fryer from the fish and sausages etc. We had a portion of chips each for lunch, as well as the most amazing cheese, potato and onion pie. Fantastic chips and great service - just a shame we don't live locally! Thanks so much :-)

Absolutely the most amazing Fish & Chips the flavour of the fish was outstanding, and the batter was just the right amount. (Not like others do to make your fish look larger) I went twice and asked for something special with the fish I had already tasted yesterday. I was made a very special fish sandwich with their homemade tarter sauce. ( don’t ask for recipe as you won’t get it. lol) I was sooo incredibly tasty even with mushy peas. Scrumptious!

I ordered one large portion of chips, 2 sausages and a 500ml bottle of pop and only got 5p change from a tenner! That would be fine if it was the best chippy sausage and chips I'd had, but it was just very average. Wasn't bad, but wasn't great either. Sorry.

Gorgeous fish and chips, freshly cooked whilst your wait. We had plaice, cod & scampi and they were all really lovely. The homemade tartare sauce was delicious too. The two ladies serving were friendly and polite and we much preferred the food here to the other chip shop in Settle.

Small chippy in the market square but big on quality and taste. My daughter and I only had a chip barm or chip teacake as they call it here. Far more expensive than my local chippy in Wigan but really good chips and barm and a big portion. Very popular place.

Fresh fried fish, beautiful steamed steak puddings and local made pies with filled with steak. All fried in vegetable oil and the chips are fried separately in there own pan. I do work here but I couldn't work out how to share photos.

Been here twice recently and once to The Fisherman. All good and v tasty to be honest but the "chips and gravy" each time at the Shambles was superior. The service is great, and i would recommend this shop every time!

I've been coming to Shambles Fish and Chip Shop since 1977 and the fish and chips here are as good as ever, the best in Yorkshire. Freshly cooked and delicious and good value! Am glad to see they've survived the lockdown; social distancing well managed, I'll be happy to come here again next time I'm in Settle.

I wouldn't normally opt to give a'poor' review but my experience at the Shambles left me with some concerns. I will say that the food we had was decent fish and chips, good portion sizes, if someone had've handed me this at home I would've probably given a higher rating. The issue for me is that, I visited during lockdown and upon walking in was shocked by the interior. The shop really does need a deep clean and sprucing up. Surfaces were untidy and floors were unclean. I placed my order and was suprised as I watched the server use their phone and touch their face whilst serving. Yes they had gloves on but there's no benefit to wearing them if you do this. The second server also used their phone whilst serving. On reflection, I wish I'd have left at this point or asked them to put on a fresh pair. I understand that this is a tough job and there is no question the staff were working hard, but now more than ever it is so important to maintain hygeine procedures. A few simple changes could really turn this place around. When you compare the shambles to the other fish and chip shop in town, there is really no competition and I can see why the queue for the latter was down the street.

Simply the best. I have had so many fish and chips and been disappointed. These were awesome. Fresh and well cooked. Lovely hard working honest staff. Highly recommend

We’ve just had fish and chips from here and I have got to say they are seriously the BEST fish and chips we have ever tasted. Awesome.

Called for some food whilst out on my motorcycle. I had battered sausage chips & gravy and I must say the food was that good it was almost sexual. I will be calling again.

Went here for a lunch on-the-hoof in the course of Christmas shopping at Booths supermarket (the best one in our area). I had steak pudding & chips with gravy, my wife haddock & chips. Both excellent. But I also have to say the steak pudding was the best I’ve had for many years. I’m familiar with lifting the lid of the base of the pudding to find a void with a sludgy mush below. Not this time - lovely lean tasty meat and lovely light suet casing along with a tasty gravy. And the chips were spot on. That’ll be our go-to spot for chippy indulgence in Settle from now on. By the way the lad behind the counter is a lovely chatty lad as well. Nice & friendly place.

Very enjoyable typical fish n chips. Very friendly owner and a nice setting. Will be returning when back in area.

Had lunch here in the small cosy restaurant. The lady who served us was very friendly and made us feel very welcome. We had fish and chips with mushy peas and a curry sauce, along with a pot of tea for two and a slice of bread and butter. Everything was fresh, including the bread which had a liberal covering of quality butter. The batter on the fish was light and crispy and everything was cooked to perfection. We were pleased we had opted to eat in and for the excellent size of the portions and quality of the meal and service the final bill was very reasonable for a meal very much enjoyed by both of us.One suggestion we would make would be to maybe make it a bit brighter or put a noticeable lit up sign in the restaurant window to draw attention to the fact the restaurant is open - as in the fish & chip shop window. Never seen a fish helping so big! Our meal in the cafe was lovely. The shop serves take away fish and chips,and the standard is superb in both cases. Thank you.

Im so pleased that we stumbled upon this take-away/ cafe.We sat inside the cafe section which is small but cosy enough and the portions are so generous.All the family had chips with Fish, pie or curry sauce.The chips aren't fried in the usual beef dripping and as one of the family members is Vegan, that was refreshing especially in Yorkshire.Good service, price and very attentive, will definitely visit again.

We arrived late on a Sunday evening after a long journey from Essex and decided to eat in their small restaurant and there was a very friendly young man who served us. Portion size was on the generous side. Delicious and fresh would thoroughly recommend to anyone visiting Settle.

We tried this because of a visit many years ago. Although under new owners it was as good if not better. The fish was beautiful surrounded in golden batter. The owner was very very pleasant and made us very welcome. Returning is a must do.

While walking around city of York we called in for Fish and chips we have had them before and they are to die for there the best Fish and Chips . It was a bit wet so we eat inside a must to go Visitors Travellers and walkers you all will not be disappointed

Having ordered a tower burger (which had an option of chicken or beef), we only realised that there were 2 options when the order had been put through, thus explaining to the owner that we had seen him getting beef out of the freezer and not chicken. When stating we wanted the chicken tower burger the owners chosen phrase was quite appalling - “you didnt say that originally - did you??? its a good job i didnt put them in - next time tell me what you want”Now we appreciate they may have been busy on this very night, but if there is any doubt in the order, this should be the member of staffs duty to ask the question. When packing the food up for us to take out, the owner then proceeded to mock us by saying - “just check the order!!” to another member of staff, “in case she wants to change the order again!” Simply no customer service skills and even though the food was extremely good - we shall not be going back due to the rude and downright disrespectful customer service skills!!

Went on a Monday afternoon, lovely lad called Will served us, very friendly and accommodating. Fish, chips and peas were amazing especially the fish- thin and light crispy batter- like it used to be in chippies everywhere when people used to know how to make batter! Will definitely go again. Would highly recommend.

Looked a bit unclean when i walked in. Lady was pleasant enough but then a man appeared behind the counter wearing an anorak and looking like he’d just taken his dog for a walk, no apron or anything - he was dangling a dipped fish in one hand ready fo frying. So this combined with the fact that the whole place looked like it needed a good scrub really put me off my fish and chips.

First visit to this place with the family. Excellent service, the gentleman who served up was on top form, friendly, helpful and went the extra mile for us. Many thanks, we will one day be back. Shambles? Quite the opposite from our experience.

Called into the Shambles at the end of a family day out and had the best fish and chips we've tasted in a long time. The staff were friendly and served us quickly, the food was hot and real value for money. We will definitely be back.

Tried this place one evening in Settle. This is a chippy takeaway with a *very* small restaurant/cafe attached.

Called in today just for some chips with my hubby,regretted it the moment we walked in but thought it could be ok,placed our order with the young girl behind the counter,she then shouted someone to come and do the chips,enter a bloke who looked like he needed a good wash,no aprons were worn and the young girls t-shirt was dirty and stained! At this point the young girl then decided to sort her hair out and proceeded to start tyding her bobble I work In catering and all these signs are a big no no and at this point I told her I had changed my mind and left, i would avoid this place at all costs!!!☹☹

i enjoyed Settle as a place to visit, yes its a historic town full of day visitors, and certainly pulls the crowd in, so we literally stumbled across the restaurant and met a lovely waitress from Devon, very pleasant who had a lovely posh accent,

A Saturday night visit to this hidden away Chippy. The food was lovely and lots of it. Far to much to handle. Sadly no steak puddings left but fish was fresh and cooked just right.

Well what can I say about this little jewel in the crown that is just nestled away in the market square in the magical Town that is Settle ,As me and my mates were staying in settle we decided to give this chip shop a try as we had heard such great things about the ( Plaice ha ha no pun intended but could nt resist ) , Anyway it lived up to everything we had heard as we were Greeted by a fantastic member of staff George I believe his name was the owners son I had been lead to believe a credit to the company, but we got the impression that all the place was a credit to its owners nice and clean not to expensive neither (Great well displayed Menu something for everyone great kids Menu ,Lovely little sit down cafe next door to takeaway part which was also very clean and tidy so once again a credit to the owners of the property. Anyway the food we ordered was cooked fresh and was with us in no time at all ,I myself had fish chips and curry sauce which was delicious and my friend had a fish tea cake with scraps which was as equally delicious ,Anyway it just Remains for me to say please keep up the good work and keep doing what your doing as it’s clearly working and you have a booming business as it was very busy when we arrived ,and please keep George on as he’s made for the Roll a real people’s person well done we will be back soon and with friends Thankyou R D B .

This was a Saturday night takeaway including plaice, sausage, cheese and onion pie, chips and mushy peas and a generous amount of scraps. Batter was crisp and the chips were fairly crisp. All tasted good. the pastry for the pie was a bit hard but the filling was one of the better ones of this type. Would use this again in preference to the other shop in town.

I’m a regular visitor to the Shambles and there are good reasons why. The fish is always fresh and tasty.... The batter is light and crispy (no soggy batter here!)... Chips are always excellent and don’t taste of old oil like some places.... Friendly staff who always have a smile on their face and happy to chat. Oh and you must try one of their pies - yummy! Highly recommend this place to eat in or takeaway when you visit Settle. Looking forward to our next chippy treat already!

Visited to get the boys tea ..... food was good, staff communication/service greatly lacking, more interested in talking to their friends!

The batter on the haddock was light and crispy and the fish was perfectly cooked. Even though I was hungry, I couldnt eat my way through this very large meal..... I will definitely come again the next time I am in Settle.

The food was 10/10 but the flippant attitude of the Manager left a bad taste.

Visited before going on Settle Carlisle railway premises are quite pokey at the rear of a small market but they are clean and tidy and they have made the most of the space available.

What more can I say?! Beautiful fresh tasty fish in a lovely crisp batter with great tasty chips. Friendly efficient service. We ate outside in the sunshine but there's a restaurant too if you prefer. We will certainly be back, thank you Shambles!

Not a lot else to say!! Poor attempt at twice cooked chips, dripping in grease. Fish had some sort of watered down batter on them. Threw them away in the bin outside. Only pleasant thing was the young girl who took the order. Polite and chatty.

Takeaway accessible from back no steps, café is from front with steps and handrail. Fairly basic seating, but reasonably comfortable, food good, friendly service, public car park at front, but difficult to find a space on a sunny day.

What an amazing find! Settle has a little gem with this fish & chip shop it’s AMAZING! AND they cook in VEG OIL!!! tremendous! You don’t get that often ( I’m not a fan of the beef dripping it repeats on you for a week n) We went into the shop then realised there was a very trendy cafe next door so we went in there & received our freshly cooked to order meals.

In the centre, two doors into the shop. plus eating area.Personally, I feel it is expensive and not that good,but it is a matter of taste and it is on a carpark.

Fairly good selection but we all chose haddock which was quite dry. The Coleslaw was not available which was a shame as previous visitors had said it was worth having. Not a particularly appealing place and it was very cold. Probably won’t go again.

Proper fish and chips with a pot of tea! We were going to grab a take away and head back to the apartment but because it was such a cold evening thought we’d sit in instead. So glad we did, we had the place to ourselves. The service was excellent and friendly. I chose haddock and chips and it came with tartar sauce and lemon. The haddock was super tasty with a perfect batter which had lots of crunchy knarly bits to enjoy. I had the medium and this was plentiful. My husband had half a chicken which was also very tasty and both portions of chips were fluffy in the middle and crisp on the outside. Finished off with a pot of tea it was a great start to our time in Settle! It is very reasonably priced for the food that you get.

Visited mid afternoon on a very cold December day. Fish & chips made to order. The chips were deliciously crispy and the batter on the fish was lovely and light. I'd definitely recommend them.

we arrived at lunchtime, was able to get a table easy enough, ordered our meal, and a little later the freshly cooked food arrived, very pleasant staff, very helpful. proper mushy peas, nice tea, soft drinks only available. we went for the ordinary portions but...

Once again this has not disappointed us..friendly...the meals are best for miles...have been coming ere for yrs..and will do so...

Seen multiple people complaining about prices ect, unreal. There are 2 chippy a in settle and this is the best one by far. Service is fabulous, fish is always fresh, batter is to die for and the chips are just out of this world. All round 5 star for me!!

Outside there is a large window poster advertising ice-cream and a set of steps leading up to a door - my daughters wanted an ice-cream so I assumed the steps would lead upto the icecream palour. I went up the steps and walked in and realised that it was a chip shop. There were two women behind the counter and I asked if we could buy the ice-cream in there - she didnt even look up and just said no.....so I asked if she could direct me to the ice-cream shop and again with out looking up she said go round the corner....so I turned to leave with my kids in tow. On my way down the steps one of the women shouted 'some people are thick'!!Rude is an understatement - as someone who has never been here before, ok I went in the wrong shop but their attitude stinks - Shambles by name - certainly shambles by nature......We had a chippy the night after at another fish and chip restaurant down the road from here (The Fisherman) and the service and food was fantastic - I would recommend anybody wanting fish and chips in Settle go to this place.Customer service is everything and I'm sorry but if the shambles was my business I would certainly be looking for new staff - defo wont ever eat here now and neither should anyone else!

I read mixed reviews of this place and didn't really know what to expect. In the end, what we found was decent service and very good haddock and chips. The side dishes of curry sauce and mushy peas were nice as well.

Lovely location right in the Market square in Settle. Service was prompt but server could do with learning to smile. Prompt service and decent fish and chips but rather expensive.

Not one to moan but since when do you get a teacake with no butter on unless you ask for a dry one poor service from the long blond haired girl serving wants to also smile

My wife and I both prefer this chip shop, whilst still a bit pricey better quality than the other shop down the road.

The grim reaper offers better prices. What a rip off. 10.75 for a large portion of chips and fish... dirty tables and dirty cutlery.... man behind the counter whose smile could have frozen hell twice over. Across the road, two cafes offer the same food, at half the price. Settle should be ashamed of this shambles. we got up and walked out. a family of five would have spent over £50 for fish and chips. If anyone can recommend better value. get back us. Shame on Settle for allowing this.

Quick service, with excellent food, very good portion sizes and welcoming and firendly staff. A good atmosphere all round.

We had takeaway chips with free batter bits. Friendly staff and wonderful freshly fried chips. Very enjoyable.

This cafe attached to the shop is very simply furnished but you can guarantee a good meal. We have stopped here twice when travelling from the east coast back to the Lakes. It is central and in the market square so easy to find. Well worth the stop.

Good fish and chips - also have other food like pizza, mushy peas, pies. Very centrally located in market square. Take out or eat in.

Well worth a visit, lovely friendly service, beautiful freshly cooked pizzas for tea tonight. Were able to accommodate all our pizza preferences, with a half and half toppings.

Called in here while visiting Settle last week. We did visit last year and it was ok. Not so this time. Ordered two pensioners specials st £7.20 each, have you ever ordered and then looked around and thought wish I could cancel well that is how I felt. It was about 11.45 in the morning and we were the only ones in the cafe, look like it had just opened. I went to use the toilet which hadn't been cleaned, there were hand paper towels in th bin which was almost full, no soap in the dispenser and the floor was filthy. Outside in the restaurant wasn't much better, looked like it needed a good scrub, everywhere greasy looking and a lick of paint wouldnt go a miss either. The meal arrived it was a smallish plate of fish and chips, bread and butter and a pot of tea, nothing to write home about, fish was greasy, the smell of fat coming from the chippy was off putting and there was a dirty looking fridge in between the chippy and cafe as a divider. Won't be returning.

Attended for dinner on 28/08. My partner had the haddock and chips - not the large, God knows what size that would have been because the normal portion was huge. The batter was thin and crispy, good quality. The chips were decent, tasty.I had a cheese and onion pie and chips and gravy. The gravy was really really good. The pie and chips were also good. I would go back again, it was varied food delivered quickly.

Generous helping of lovely chips fried in veg oil. Cheery service... big thumbs-up, will definitely call again.

Well I don't have a picture because I ate them as quick as i could!!! Crispy on the outside soft fluffy in the middle! Don't know what they do but they're amazing and served hot!!

I ate at the Shambles today and decided to order the margherita pizza. Staff were very welcoming and I was glad to see dandelion and burdock on the menu as I don't know many places that serve the drink. The pizza was lovely, although a bit dry. Overall I'd definitely recommend this place; it's great value for money and they'll even give you a box to take your food away with if you develop a case of trapped wind.

Small sit-in restaurant or takeaway in the centre. £1.70 well spent as the regular chips were plentiful and utterly delicious.

what can you say about fish and chips. If they are done properly like here you cannot fault them. Great munching on chips while touring around the beautiful village of Settle

Traditional fish and chip shop overlooking the market place with both a restaurant and separate takeaway section. We were served by a friendly young chap and both enjoyed our meals of chicken and mushroom pie (with mushy peas and gravy) and home-made fish cakes (with jug of sauce), both served with plenty of tasty chips.

Great cod and chips.Not greasy and lovely crisp batter with flakey cod. We ate in the restaurant once but mainly did take away. Great value.

The fish was the nicest I've eaten in a long time. We had the senior citizens haddock, chips, coffee and bread and butter which was £7.40 each. Well worth it.

We called here for supper on a Sunday night. Our order was promptly taken. Cafe area nice and clean. Waitress very friendly and efficient. Our fish and chips arrived shortly, cooked fresh to order and was delicious. Great price too. So impressed came back later that week.

We nipped in for a quick tea and it looked like it was shutting, I asked if they had an item on the menu and they said they didn't, I then had to ask what was actually on the menu because it looked like nothing was cooking. After all of this we managed to order fish and chips. It took about 10 minutes, which was fine because we weren't really rushing, the wait was a bit awkward. The food was ok, the batter could have been a bit crispier, wasn't really worth the money but we weren't overly disappointed.
