The atmosphere was tainted by an American telling his companion and everyone else in the restaurant about the Royal Family especially "Princess Megan". The man should have heeded the old saying, better to be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. However the waitress who served us made up for this by being chatty and helpful and efficient.

This is a small and unassuming establishment and I had second thoughts about having booked when it looked like there were no other customers! Thankfully we did go and it was really very good. We took advice on the number of small plates to share and it turned out to be just the perfect portions and each dish was perfectly cooked and presented. The staff were lovely and very helpful. We visited last night for dinner and words can’t describe the full experience we had here. The food was outstanding, great portions and beautifully presented. We had a selection of chefs specials which included gambas pil pil, chorizo and black pudding, sticky pork, steak, risotto, patatas bravas, chicken, bread, olives, cheese and each dish was amazing! The Prosecco was one of the best I have tried, and the girls serving were so, so lovely while the owners, even though they were so busy preparing each dish, still made time and effort to come and talk to us and their customers. The time, hard work, love, passion and care for ensuring our visit was an experience, with outstanding food, top service and true care for each of their customers was evident throughout the evening which made it one of the best experiences I have ever had eating out in Dundee. The love and passion the owners have for providing this unique experience was definitely the highlight for us. Especially knowing how hard they work behind the scenes helping others in many ways. Thank you Paul and Kelly, and to the girls serving last night for your generosity, and for providing us with truly the best experience to date eating out in Dundee.

One of our three orders at the table arrived 20 mins after the first was laid on the table. Have a feeling they may have taken their eye off the Dundee city venue, as the new one in the Ferry has recently opened 🤷🏾‍♀️ also the service was mediocre. I want smiles and enthusiasm. I've had the Selkie on my radar for a while now and it did not disappoint. We were a table for 3 on Friday dinner time. The place was busy, with us taking the last remaining table (we had booked - I hear there is rarely walk-in availability, another good sign). The atmosphere was warm, cosy and intimate. We were recommended to order 3/4 dishes per person by the lovely waiting staff, which we did. The highlight for me was the pork belly which was so soft and melt-in-the-mouth good. The risotto was perfectly cooked and cheesy. I'd never tried black pudding before but wanted to step out of my comfort zone and the chorizo with black pudding dish was out of this world! So glad I tried that. The gambas pil pil were delightful and a fair portion! We also ordered bread to soak up all the juices, as well as some vegetable dishes such as the rocket salad and tenderstem broccoli to balance out the meal. I honestly could not fault the food at all. Everything came beautifully presented and was downright yummy! I like the fact that the menu is varied but not too long, as this gives them a chance to do these dishes really well. We finished with a cocktail - the espresso martini really hit the spot. I'd read some reviews complaining about the prices for this restaurant, but I think this is unfounded. If you want wetherspoons vibe, quality and prices then the Selkie isn't for you. If you want an independent dining experience with great food and atmosphere then you can't go wrong with the Selkie!

We were recommended by our hotel to try The Selkie we were guaranteed not to be disappointed...who knew!! We visited Dundee for my friends birthday treat and were advised to book which we did as it was a very popular and busy restaurant. On arrival we were greeted and shown to our table on the RHS wall of the entrance door in the middle which my friend commented I feel like this a table for 6 as the tables were so close together and each table either side being occupied. So much so we asked the ladies sitting next hoe many tapas had they ordered. Our waitress was vey nice and explained 4-6 tapas for 2 would work and if we decided later we could add to the order. We decided to order 5 which all came out sporadically and to our amazement the sub blush tomato risotto came out first in the tinniest terracotta shallow ramekin at a whopping £8.50 for a couple of spoonful's each. Then followed the mussels which were plentiful for a £9 portion and extremely large with a nice chilli tomato broth but sadly no bread to mop up the broth. The steak came next in the same size ramekin at a whopping £11, only steak and nothing else, followed by the Patatas Brava again same dish and well overpriced for a couple of spoonful's of diced potato's, the lentil stew was bland and we sent that back. By the time we had finished we felt like we had just had our starters and was not willing to order anything further as it was so overpriced for the minuscular portions we were served. The cocktails were all ice and foam and only the equivalent of 1/3 cup of actually cocktail at £8.50, reasonable for a cocktail you would think but not when presented. On a busy Sat night the toilet didn't have any toilet roll so was caught out there, not even an empty roll was visible just nothing at all. The service was fine and on the waitress approaching to clear our table she asked if everything was alright and I proceeded to advise how disappointed we were she kindly asked if we wanted to discuss further with management and we declined and just asked for the bill however the manager did approach us and kindly took our comments on board and reduced the bill considerably for us which was appreciated and very kind of him. We would not return or recommend this restaurant due to the prices charged for standard food and very small plates. Was a very disappointing birthday night for us both.

The food was okay. But not amazing. & for the prices charged per dish I would have expected something of a lot more quality & larger portions than were presented. The chorizo & black pudding dish only had one half slice of shop bought black pudding & the chorizo sliced as thin as possible & hardly any of it. Patatas bravas portion was very small. King prawns were tiny & looked like supermarket quality. Our last dish also came out about 10/15 minutes qafter everything else to the point we thought it had been forgotten. No one explained that the dishes would come out one by one. Service wasn’t the best either. & for it to be the only empty restaurant in the vicinity when there’s something on at the caird hall, that tells you something. Too expensive for what it is. Bill was £60 for both of us & that was with only 1 can of coke & tap water ordered for drinks. Left still feeling hungry.

It was okay. Booked in for mother's day as I had heard good things. We were seated at the small table right at the toilet door which they should just do away with. It's really off-putting having people come and go to the toilet so close while you're eating. The service wasn't great. I asked a few questions about different tapas as I wasn't sure what they were and the waitress looked put out at having to answer them. It might be an idea to have a brief description of what each thing is on the menu if the staff get fed up telling customers what they are. The food was nice enough but I did feel I didn't order as much as I would have because I felt uncomfortable asking what each dish was. The broccoli was quite bitter.

On a cold February evening we arrived to be allocated a table for 2 less than 2 feet away from the main draughty door. The greeter reallocated us a new table promptly, however it's odd to have a table in such a position to begin with. After a 20-minute wait, the drinks order was taken, despite the slow service the wine was tasty. The menu is with a few items not being available, and be aware, they can not easily adapt to cater for non complex allergies or dietary requirements. Unless I wanted to eat some hot cheese or muscles I was left with only one option, the risotto. We ordered some bread which finally arrived 50mins into our visit, slightly warmed but with no accompaniments, no oils nor butters. How very basic. Another 30mins gone by and we we served our tapas, it was mediocre at best. We ate some and quickly left. The entire place is suffering from an identity crisis, from the dodgy roof decor to the food, which is as far from an authentic experience as could be. Surely given the restaurant name, a Scottish style tapas would make more sense. Overall the service was just OK, the waitress dipped her head scowled as we left and that solidified my decision to never step foot in this restaurant again.

If the key things on which to judge a restaurant are the quality of the food, the staff and the atmosphere The Selkie is up with the very best. The tapas selection was excellent- not so many that it lacked personality but enough that you felt you had genuine choice. Each one we had was sublime but our personal favourites were the sea bass, the pork belly and the lamb. Even the bread was delicious. For dessert we opted for the Eton mess and the cheesecake. Both were delightful. The staff were welcoming and knowledgeable, able to advise us and answer all our questions. They were attentive without being overbearing and really contributed to a lovely evening. The restaurant is warm and relaxed with plenty of space between tables which always gives the feeling that the quality of the diners’ experience is important to the venue. You can tell it is family run rather than a soulless chain. I can’t recommend it enough. We have been coming to Dundee for years to visit family and The Selkie is the best restaurant we have eaten in. This was our first time at it, but it will now be our go to place to eat.

The ambience was lovely, service attentive and the food was very nice although the mussels were not worth the price - tasty but very small portion. Feta and broad bean stew was delicious and my mum thoroughly enjoyed the chicken skewers. Despite this I don’t think we will be back. Waitress brought water, took our wine order and asked if we wanted bread. Brought a bread plate to our table which comprised of 2 slices of bread, a small bowl of olives and olive oil and some salad leaves we don’t like olives so asked if we could just have some bread to go with the mussels. Plate arrived with 2 slices of bread and a small dish of olive oil. That was fine but not when we received the bill and found we were charged £6.50 for the bread!! I queried this with the waitress and she said we must have been charged for 2 portions of bread by mistake so reduced the bill by £2.75. Your sums just don’t add up and we felt conned as even at the amended price of £2.75 for one slice of bread is an absolute rip off. Please check your bill as every single table appeared to have been “given” bread - nice little earner.

Trying to be positive, the ambiance was fine, the gluten free options were fine, the cake was fine for me. However, to serve 2 slices of bread with such a small portion of oil started the disappointment. Having ordered a pint of lime and soda , I was brought a small tumbler with very strong lime soda, I asked for water to make it drinkable. We ordered gambas, two chorizo, beans and feta, and a chicken skewer. The gambas came, after five minutes our chorizo dishes arrived. I searched for the chorizo but there was none I asked the waitress and she went to the kitchen. An employ came and apologised saying it was the wrong order, she’d not charge us. During that time two very small chicken thighs arrived in a sauce that resembled the gambas sauce. I asked the waiter if these were cooked on a skewer then put in this sauce. He never returned. There was no decaffeinated coffee and one of the three desserts wasn’t on offer after telling us it was. When paying the bill I again enquired about the chicken and was told no, that it was wrong on the menu! Surely the point is to inform the client of any menu alterations was not after it was delivered. I regularly eat Tapas both here in Scotland and abroad and sadly I left highly disappointed. I didn’t make a fuss but did point out this fact when paying. Management were not brought forward, not good enough. There’s no point being rude which I wasn’t,but this night the food did not do the reputation justice. I’d suggest clarifying each dish is what you want before ordering. There were other choices I’m sure may have given me a different opinion. Considering the number of good restaurants in the area…. I’m not sure if I’d return. Finally to the dark haired spectacled waitress who told us she was excellent at her job, unasked for in a throw away comment, she needs to pay greater attention to the order she is given. I hope this was a one off. Thank you.

came here with a friend as dinner before a girls night out, drinks were lovely as was atmosphere. that was as far as the loveliness went i think we were given menus and were not told that only one sheet (dinner menu) was being served - so tried to order of what we were then told was the lunch menu (as far as we could see wasn’t labelled). our waitress was a little rude, i can wholeheartedly understand hospitality stresses because both me and my friend in question come from previous hospitality jobs, but we were met with rushed serving, and unkind looks when ordering that made us feel a little less than welcome. we ordered from the tapas section as that was the available sheet for the night. judging by the price we reckoned that the plates would do us well if we got one each and two to share, as price often determines size or quality when looking at a menu. 2/4 of our plates arrive and they happen to be my share, i ordered the steak and garlic mushroom dishes. they were nowhere near short of flavour so no points docked for this, but you got 5 maybe 6 pieces of minuscule steak for ten pounds, and it was cold - but i’m not sure if this was intentional or not. the garlic mushrooms were lovely, and warm too. my friend at this point was still waiting on her marinated chicken and our shared olives. her chicken comes and we’re a bit taken aback to see it’s just one chicken thigh, for the price and the level of hunger she was at we just got a bit of a shock, she said it did taste lovely but again just one piece 😅 by now the olives still hadn’t arrived so we just asked when our waitress went past and it was all sorted overall a not great experience with a £40 bill, it wouldn’t be on my list to visit again we went to the indian buffet down the road afterward to satiate our hunger

I took my partner to Dundee for the weekend as an early birthday, and has been researching places to eat. Came across The Selkie and thought it looked like a nice family run restaurant so gave it a go and booked for the evening tapas menu. What a lovely meal we had, restaurant had a cosy feel to it, very warm and welcoming. Staff were lovely & it really felt like they appreciated their customers. Food was incredible - we especially loved the chorizo and black pudding dish. The staff were super attentive and friendly and even brought us a complimentary slice of cake, complete with firecracker candle. All in all it made for a really special celebratory meal and somewhere we will definitely be back to on our next visit. Would absolutely recommend!

Lovely tapas meal, lots of options of tapas and sharing platters. Really cute interior. Does have limited seating so should book beforehand. Otherwise, affordable and great flavours.

Good food. Friendly staff. Nice mocktails/drinks. However over priced in my opinion. £8-10 for the tapas dishes (and they recommend you get 3-4 per person). A bowl of green beans with some garlic shouldn’t cost £8… it’s not a Michelin star restaurant!! They also had...

Not a good experience, food was just ok, they forgot one of our tapas meals so gave us some bread with it but nothing to dip it in so just dry bread 😟. Overpriced as well

First of all there were only 2 of us - no reservation, lots of empty tables but still difficult to get one. We did eventually get one that would have seated 4 people. During our time spent there, the reserved tables had not been filled....

The Selkie recently hosted a small family wedding I attended - their first, I believe - and did it beautifully. After the ceremony in the restaurant, drinks and delicious, imaginative canapés were served in neighbouring premises; then we all returned for the reception, where a glorious variety of dishes just kept coming. It was such a convivial, smoothly-run occasion and there was more than enough to eat for everyone. More weddings should be tapas-based. What a great day.

Visited today on a lovely sunny Dundee afternoon for lunch. Bit disappointed thereafter, not really with the food, but the waitress, one in particular, who was abrupt and unfriendly, and more suited towards a DIY store than someone selling the fayre offered by the restaurant....

Best Italian in Dundee! The food is fresh and flavoursome and the service is always so friendly and make you feel at home. We had both starters and mains and couldn’t fault any of it. Restaurant is clean and a good selection of both food and drinks.

Myself and my partner brought the grandkids for lunch. Food was fresh and tasty, reasonably priced and staff members Charlie & Erin were very friendly. The gluten free menu was fab too. Another positive note and certainly a point to bring us back was after our meals the kids played pool and went out to the play equipment. At no point were we rushed away or felt we'd over stayed out welcome. Great place for families.

Don't know what happened to this place. Used to be excellent. Certainly isn't now. Food poor. The fun welcoming atmosphere absolutely gone. Having to go up to the till and order and pay each time you want another coffee ( or anything else) is a pain. Why can't it just be table service? Servers not all bad but they are not great either. They used to be excellent. Very disappointed with my last few visits. Time to go elsewhere.

Our first time at Bach. Pronounced “batch” - New Zealand for home. Interesting choices. I had yummy Turkish eggs and we shared a salad.
