5 of us dined . Really lovely atmosphere and very busy . Food delicious and looked beautiful, service of all staff was excellent and extremely efficient ! !

Fantastic quality, chunky pub with great food. Definitely the best pub in Appledore I have eaten here twice in the last three years and not been disappointed either time. The only reason I didn’t give it a score of five was because we asked for an additional drink that didn’t come and even when we alerted the barman, he forgot again. I think they were rushed off their feet and could have done with an extra staff member. Not the end of the world I would still definitely come here again. This time, my friend and I had the crab and smoked bacon chowder. It was delicious.

Very disappointing. Insufficient staff and those who were there were not well trained it seemed , although pleasant and the manager seemed very young and inexperienced. We had to call for everything as waiting staff were not scanning the room. Roast beef was excellent but belly pork was over cooked and rubbery and crackling burnt and inedible. The vegetables were uninspiring and lukewarm warm at best and the cauliflower cheese we ordered was forgotten and of course no one to ask! I put 3 eggs in my Yorkshire puddings so why the fuss over 2? We waited at least 40 minutes for our food to be delivered and many people around us waited longer. Some people were indiscriminately moved to another table and when then forgotten so had to go to bar to pay and order. We got our dessert menus and did not let waitress go until we had ordered, fearing we would never see her again initially we thought we my return here for an evening meal but obviously we did not and went to the Royal George instead which was excellent! My husband felt sorry for the waitress and left a tip but I would not have done as there was no service! Oh dear!

Pros: really nice restaurant, lovely welcome by the friendly staff. Cons: Food average ant best and overcooked. I had the nut roast wellington which was dry. My husband loves pork crackling but it was burnt to a crisp and he wouldn’t eat it through fear of a visit to the dentist!

Wonderful meal, the good was delicious, service was very good, Michelle was great.

A fabulous hotel and public house situated on the seafront in the old port town of Appledore. Five minutes drive from Bideford. Mouth watering menu, something for everyone including vegetarian options. Inside you will find a plush and cosy, split level dining area and bar with plenty of seating and two fireplaces. Good selection of real ales, beers, wines and spirits. Plenty of seating outside the front and rear. Excellent friendly efficient service at the bar, a big shout out to the two bartenders on duty, Jamie and Tom who made our visit memorable. We'll definitely lunch here again. Leaded dogs welcome and a menu available for them too! Highly recommend.

Michelle and the team are awesome as ever. Food as good as ever. The service was fast and efficient with lots of smiling faces .

Lovely food but very dark, would have appreciated some light on the table!

Wasn't impressed with the service or waiting nearly an hour for our meal to come out with no apology either and no communication throughout our waiting . It was busy but not manic .Food was average.not nearly as nice as when I came with friends last year .won't return

Pleasant pub environment, food OK but bread board was a little lack lustre and bread very dry.

We only popped in for a quick bite, I was a little dissapointed. My chips were swimming in grease, the bottom of the bowl was a puddle of grease. I will try there again, as I've heard good things from friends. Hopefully just a bad day in the kitchen.

After delivering a talk and book signing session at the Appledore Book Festival, we arrived very late at the Seagate hotel looking to dine, but unfortunately, after the kitchen had closed. We received fabulous service from Michelle who refused to send us away hungry, and who insisted on making us some rather impressive ham and cheese sandwiches. Thank you for some really excellent customer service and caring for the welfare of your clientele.

Great spot for a Sunday lunch, becoming a bit of a regular thing to be honest!

Really disappointing. The food really did not stack up to the prices they were charging ... the most underwhelming vegetables with a roast dinner and an over-cooked burger. Plus the servers, while very pleasant and friendly seemed frazzled and left us sitting for 25 mins before we ordered.

Wow what a gem of a hotel. The deputy manager, Michelle is so friendly, so efficient. Nothing was too much trouble. She runs this busy beautifully decorated hotel like a dream. Appledore is probably one of the nicest villages in Devon. Talk about we felt like our springs unwinding. Thoroughly recommend the hotel and I wish all managers were as friendly and efficient as Michelle ! Thank you for a wonderful stay. We will definitely come again!

Stayed 2 nights having booked the Summer Nights deal.The room was lovely and spotlessly clean. We are in the restaurant on the first night delicious food and great service overall a really welcoming, friendly team. We will be back!

Waited for Al Ost three quarters of an hour to order though not particularly busy Worst crab sandwich I have come across white meat mashed into redmeat on top of thick mayonnaise .Bread dry..mentioned this to staff.chips thin overcooked. A real let down of a Devon treat.

What a lovely cosy, friendly and wonderful place to stay. The food was very yummy indeed with a varied choice. The staff went the extra mile to make us feel welcome, they are lovely and very helpful, a credit to The Seagate. A special mention to Jamie & Kerris who served us with a smile and friendliness 😍

We met with friends and had the most delicious Sunday lunch. Half a chicken each was never going to all be eaten, but we were able to take home a few legs!! I thought I was in heaven when offered extra Yorkshire puds. The waiter was fabulous, and he added to the jollity of the afternoon. Wines were very good and we consumed plenty. Thank you 😊

Food was nice but the service got slacker as the evening went on ! Unfortunately this seemed to be the case throughout the restaurant ! We would have had more drinks and a pudding but were left with our dirty plates in front of us for at least 30 minutes . The table next to us got the pudding menu but nobody returned to take an order plus they had to go to the bar for more drinks. Such a shame this place seems to have gone down hill !

I was so disappointed when we stopped to enjoy a coffee with family who live in the area. Having lived in North Devon for many years we used to regularly visit with our dogs and loved relaxing and enjoying both drink and food. The place was always pristine, packed with locals and visitors alike so we were anticipating struggling to even get a table especially as it was August bank holiday Monday at 11am. It was a lovely day too so alot of people were in the town. I was shocked to find the place empty inside and looking a lot less inviting than when we used to visit. But we only wanted coffee so that was okay...well so we thought!! The person in charge was so flustered and in such a rush that she wasn't listening to us as we ordered, resulting in only 2 of 5 drinks being served. We waiting 15 minutes for the remaining drinks and then chased, requesting fresh drinks for those who had them early... she wasn't that impressed but she agreed. I went up to wait for the drinks and again she was in such a rush that she didn't listen to my request, cutting across me and getting it all wrong. Then they took a long time to make 3 lattes plus and they still got the refresh order wrong. In a way it was a good job they were quiet as goodness knows how they would have coped if they were busy. I'm not sure what has changed so much that people have stopped going there and the service has become so poor. I hope it was just a blip but it's put me off wanting to go back.....

Lovely restaurant and bar,,the food is spot on,,,the landlord and landlady are the best in the business,,, I have been to many a pub restaurant but this by far the best experiences I have ever had.my server is fish the best there is ,,, full off joy and a lovely smile,, thank you.

This was our 6th stay at The Seagate Hotel since 2007 and I can't fault it. The food is delicious, the rooms are stylish and comfy and the staff are super friendly and helpful. The bar is really buzzy with a great atmosphere. And of course the location is great too.

Very disappointing. We ordered some coffees they didn't come together and the initial ones that did come went cold waiting for the rest. We then had to wait again as they got the order wrong again the second time. Eventually got it sorted and to be fair they did give us replacements for the two that went cold.

Fantastic food, really good atmosphere and excellent service. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone.

It's not often that we come away from a place feeling disappointed, but unfortunately we did after visiting The Seagate. The staff weren't particularly friendly, the food was extremely disappointing and definitely not good value for money. The only thing on the menu that appealed to me was a BBQ Pulled Pork Burger. This arrived and I found it tasteless and very dry. I certainly did not taste any of the BBQ. And the cherry on the cake, the burger cost the best part of £20. So, I don't think that I would return here, as for me, first impressions count. What I do want to add, is that this is only my experience. Everyones experience will be different.

Loved this restaurant for a while but stopped going due to the way they deal with allergens. They give you a massive folder to plough through to look to see what meal you can have. Why not just put GF on the menu like most other restaurants. It’s hard enough eating out when you have an allergy without having to do all that!! I’ve been coeliac for 13 years now and most places have phased out the folder for either a separate allergen menu or a simple guide on the menu. People with allergies feel awkward enough eating out without having to be singled out with a folder when they walk in. The food was great and the staff very helpful and clued up, thankfully as I had missed that the fish and chips was gluten free and the waitress me I could have it.

Michelle was super helpful at meeting our needs when the Seagate was already busy. She went the extra mile to make us feel welcome and provided excellent service.

Sat on a small table in the bar. Even though I booked the restaurant. Food was cold and bland. I was disappointed with the poor standards.

Booked online - the first part of the bookingvsays 'check availability', put in date and time and ten asked us to continue with the booking - got booking confirmation. Turned up 5 mins before our booked time, they checked their list then asked did you book online, we replied yes, got told oh there is a glitch with our online booking it does not match up with our own system - we were then told we are full, no space. All I can say is sort the glitch or remove online booking - attitude of staff was appalling - no apology- just we are full.

None of us plus 2 dogs came for dinner on a busy Friday night. The service from everyone was excellent, but Noah really shone. The family all had a great time and the mussels were delicious!

The food and service were incredible. We had booked as a group of families and the numbers did not phase our server at all. Noah was fantastic and made sure all our needs were catered for. He provided a fair few laughs along the way too. Thank you. The food was fresh and very tasty with a good range on the menu. No one had a single moan. The Ham Hock was particularly tasty and filling too! Thank you for an amazing meal.

Excellent service, atmosphere and food. Noah was very attentive, friendly and helpful and did a great job with our party of 13. Fish and chips was fab and the ploughman's sharer was excellent and had a nice varied mix of items. Plenty to share. The dog also enjoyed their fish from the doggies menu. Excellent touch. Would recommend The Seagate for a nice meal!

Lovely hotel, each room is lovely and unique with personal touches such as complimentary chocolates, teas and coffee. Really friendly and helpful staff, really easy to come and go throughout the day. We have stayed before and would deffo stay again

Just returned from a brilliant midweek break at The Seagate Hotel. Hosted royally by Tony and Sian and their amazing team, nothing was too much trouble and our stay was perfect! (Pet friendly) Accommodation was very spacious for my wife, myself and our German Shepherd dog Eris, and boasted a massive bed, a corner sofa and even a Doggy Hamper!! Food and drink were both outstanding with a hearty menu and a great selection of spirits and cocktails. Location is stunning!! Right on top of the River Torridge with beautiful views across the bustling estuary, with dog-friendly beaches across the river in Instow, or around the headland to Greysands. All in all, a rather successful and relaxing time away!! Thanks Tony and Sian for your hospitality… we will see you and your team, (and your dogs!!!) in October!! Special praise is reserved for young Jamie!! The lad worked tirelessly morning, afternoon and night and always with a welcome smile on his face!! Thanks for looking after us… and the dog!! We shall return……

We came for a late dinner after visiting the eden project, the staff were welcoming and friendly and the food was delicious. We loved this take on ham and egg and chips it was huge and cooked perfectly. Thank you for completing a perfect day.

As it was a beautiful evening I came in last night for a drink at the bar. Served by Maisie who was really friendly and she recommended one of the summer spritzers, Passionfruit kiss was superb. Spent a couple of hours soaking up the sun and atmosphere. Will definitely come again

We had a lovely meal at The Seagate Hotel. I had burger and my husband had fish and chips. Both meals were presented very well and we both commented on how nice they were. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Nothing seemed like it was too much trouble. The pub seemed quite busy but the food didn’t take too long to come out. Would highly recommend visiting if you are in the area!!!

We had a family celebration lunch here for 30 people in June. From the initial planning of the event through to the day itself, everything was superb. Nothing was too much trouble and everything was friendly and supportive. The food from the special appledore day menu was excellent and really good value. Perfect for a big group where people had differing tastes but everyone found something they liked. Service was excellent and the whole event delivered everything we wanted it to. Thanks to Tony, Sian and the whole team for really looking after us and making a special and emotional day a fitting send off for Mum (who would have loved the whole event).

Managed to get in for a Sunday lunch, late afternoon, and it was absolutely delicious. Generous portions. Bread board and pork belly bites to start and there is enough to share with someone! Unfortunately I didn’t have enough room for dessert which is not like me 😂 Very friendly and welcoming staff 🩵 +dog friendly 🐶 Definitely recommend, worth a visit!

We had a three night stay , on arrival we were met by Pete who was very friendly and welcoming, we were a little early so sat in the sun outside and had a few drinks, the veiw from the pubs front patio area is stunning, a perfect spot for lunch and a drink . Pete then checked us in and led us to the hotel which was a completely different building from the pub , I didn't know this at the time but its literally steps away! We stayed in room (19) it was amazing, very spacious, huge bed and fantastic views across the river , the facilities are great, nespresso coffee machine and snacks on hand if you fancy (with pricelist) . Breakfast! Totally amazing, great choice and the steak and eggs are perfect, I would definitely book again with breakfast included as it works out great value for money. On the second day we had dinner and was served by Michelle who was a amazing host who looked after all our needs and recommended particular dishes, I'm guessing she has been at the seagate a while as she seemed to take command of the pub and greeted everyone with a cheery smile (and on first term names with many who walked in) I would definitely recommend the seagate and would in no doubt stay again ( Thanks Michelle & Pete) for looking after us.

Fish was a really good laugh and amazing server, had a wonderful week. Will definitely be coming back.

Very good place to plonk yourself for a meal and good choice of beer. Varied menu we reccomend the Ploughman's sharer , when available the mushroom rarebit is awesome. Left my wallet in the bar I am now famous. Great staff in all positions.

Just git back from a great weekend at the Seagate at Appledore with our dog. Fantastic dog facilities including a dog menu in the pub with prices of £5.00 so while your having your meal you pup can enjoy theirs too. The adapted room we stayed in was great with a big wet room. The staff were really friendly and helpful. A big shout out to Fish who made our stay really great. Highly recommend.

Had an amazing few days, made even better by the team. A special shout to Fish for making it feel like a home from home!

Unfortunately, The Seagate was too busy for us to get a seat when we called in and we didn't want to wait. I assume they are doing something right to be so jam-packed, but it was rather too frenetic for us to want to hang on for space to become available.

Absolutely best burger my husband has had in a long time 😂 staff so friendly and chatty, have stayed previously in the rooms above the pub, so good perfect for our dogs, we have a three legged springer spaniel and a cocker spaniel, the landlady made a beeline for the dogs as they have some, really felt comfortable and wished I lived nearer it would certainly be my local, and my next holiday will certainly be a stop at sea gate in lovely appledore, Thankyou for a lovely atmosphere and let’s keep these fantastic traditional pubs alive.

Only stopped in for a quick pint. I didn't eat but the menu looked delicious. On the more expensive side but definitely worth a visit. Friendly staff and a nice chilled atmosphere.

Weve visited the Sandgate Inn several times now whilst on holiday in Appledore. The food and service has been amazing through every visit, staff are all very helpful and friendly. Even gave my little dog a sausage when we had breakfast there. Would defiantly come back if in the area again and if we know of anyone coming on holiday here will happily recommend

It's a really friendly pub often have breakfast there on a Sunday morning with my sister and her family infact I get so comfy I could stay all day well worth a visit .

Excellent local pub in beautiful Appledore

The service there was probably better then the 4 stars, but hard to tell as the restaurant was very full, so took a bit longer for service to get to you. Nice that dogs were wellcome.

Great place to stay, eat & drink. Tony and his team always make you feel really welcome. Food is amazing and the bar has a great atmosphere. Best place to stay if you're visiting Appledore (in my opinion) as location is perfect, the bus stops outside and the ice cream van is opposite!
