The Seagate Hotel Appledore North Dev in Torridge

We were made to feel very welcome with the friendly service. Our Sunday roasts were delicious; generous helpings, great range of sides and spectacular Yorkshire puddings. The traditional style of the pub makes for a lovely atmosphere and it was looking very festive. Overall an excellent lunch experience!

Another lovely visit to this gem of a place. As always the staff were welcoming, friendly and couldn’t do enough for us (and our dog). The whole place was super festive, food delicious (dinner and breakfast) and our room was warm and cosy with a gorgeous view of the quay and Instow. We’ll be back very soon 🥰

Really enjoyed this Birthday meal for my husband - which was actually the Christmas Party Menu! Lovely food, friendly service and gorgeous cosy (and festive) atmosphere!

We’ve stayed and eaten at the Seagate before, but this is was our first stay since the new Manager arrived and it’s safe to say that the Seagate team is still on top form! Excellent food and such a warm welcome. A special shout out to Michelle who seems to know everyone who walks through the door and made us feel so welcome once again! Feeling relaxed and recharged now after a lovely couple of nights in beautiful Appledore.

Fire Protection Systems arranged their Xmas Dinner tonight at the Seagate. Michelle the Seagate host and her staff were excellent, always helpful , we could not wish for more. The food from Chef Lucas was perfect Christmas Fayre. Thank you. Highly recommend

Normally love The Seagate but the staff were so inattentive today as they just wanted to chat to each other! Never offered extra drinks or desserts so we gave up and left!

We had a fantastic Sunday lunch. Great meat options. The ladies had the Butternut Squash Wellington and said it was the best veggie option they’d ever had. Our server, Jason was very attentive and humorous. A fantastic dining experience.

We came to the seagate for breakfast, it was a nice sunny morning so we decided to sit outside. The atmosphere was superb and the staff was amazing. We booked the upstairs room at The Seagate for a 50th wedding anniversary celebration. They were very accommodating, letting us book the whole room and decorate it how we wanted. We were a party of 30 people, and everyone was looked after really well. The service was very friendly and the food was very good. We were particularly impressed by the cheerful and patient help we got at the end sorting out the rather complicated way we wanted to split up the bill. The room was lovely and had a good atmosphere. Everyone had a great time. Thank you 🙏

An Unforgettable Birthday Celebration! We just celebrated my boyfriend’s 30th here, and it couldn’t have been more perfect. This place is hands-down our favourite spot, and it never disappoints! We pre-ordered our food, but the menu had changed to a more seasonal, winter vibe (which was a lovely surprise), and although it was super busy, the food and service were impeccable. Our server, Ashka, was an absolute star, keeping the energy up and making us feel well looked after, even with a packed house! A few menu items were unavailable by the time we ordered, but the team went above and beyond to make up for it. They even surprised us with a sharing platter that was absolutely delicious — mussels, lamb bites, olives, crackers — everything was top-notch! Special shoutout to the chef, Lucas, who I used to work with in another location; his talent shines through in every dish. From starters to mains, each plate was perfection, and everyone was raving about their food. And when it was time for the cake I’d brought, they presented it with so much thought and effort, really making it feel special. The night wouldn’t have been complete without my boyfriend’s dad, who kept us all entertained with his "mushroom obsession" and endless jokes. All in all, it was a night full of laughs, amazing food, and wonderful service. If you’re looking for a warm, welcoming spot with incredible food and a team that genuinely cares about making your night special, this is it! The main problem was the very limited menu on offer. This was not explained to us until after we started our drinks. There were 5 main dishes not available. We ended up with our 3 rd or 4th choices. On arrival the greeting was half hearted and we were on a table next to a large very loud gathering

Had a lovely stay, staff very helpful and welcoming. Very good food, especially the Ham Hock and an excellent cooked 'Devon Full' breakfast. The pub is also friendly and idea for a relaxing drink and chat. Must mention one menber of staff 'Ruthie' who really went above and beyond. I left an item in the room when when we checked out and Lucy made sure it was returned to me, thank you very much and excellent service. Would happily recommend this establishment and look forward to stay there again in the not too distant future.

We quite liked the idea of using a book to indicate that a table was booked, not seen that before… what a good idea. It also holds down the menu, a menu that has seen a lot of customers before you. In the sense that they really need to print a few new ones. Picking it up was the start of our ‘oh God, what now?’ experience. Dogs slobbering over the table next door and lying in the way so you can’t get out. Music blaring away while you eat. If you like this sort of ‘atmosphere’ the Seagate is the place for you. If you like an uninspiring menu where most of the starters/nibbles are ‘unavailable today’ then the Seagate is the place for you. (There must have been more than twenty people eating and tables still had books on them for later bookings… why had nobody gone shopping, we weren’t unexpected.) If you don’t like a place where the chef puts on a few specials to supplement the menu regulars then the Seagate is the place for you. If you’re the sort of person who is content to wait more than twenty minutes for the kitchen to throw together a salad with no dressing then the Seagate is the place for you. The staff are nice though.

Our server, Anise, provided great service throughout the night to our whole group allowing us to enjoy a nice evening.

Such huge improvements in the food here and service excellent too. W both had the hin of beef with root vegetables. Even better than Mama makes it. Outstanding, anda generous portion too for £9 Wheelchair accessible, lovely clean toilets, own car park. Highly recommended

I had a delicious dinner with some bespoke additions. The staff were friendly, accommodating and knowledgeable. The atmosphere is friendly and enables a good conversation to be had.

Jamie was so helpful booking us a corner table in dog friendly area. Anise was lovely front of house, looking after us. Food was really good with a great choice. The hot salad was fab and the ham hock and chips was huge

It got a bit busy, but our waiters were amazing Jamie and Jason were super helpful and answered all our questions, and stayed cool and calm under pressure, the food was amazing all the staff are super helpful and friendly, will definitely eat here again

Excellent as ever, our regular lunch venue when we have visitors. The beer battered haddock is the best around, lovely crispy batter, and my wife’s hake fillet was also beautifully cooked. We’ll be back…

Fantastic quality, chunky pub with great food. Definitely the best pub in Appledore I have eaten here twice in the last three years and not been disappointed either time. The only reason I didn’t give it a score of five was because we asked for an additional drink that didn’t come and even when we alerted the barman, he forgot again. I think they were rushed off their feet and could have done with an extra staff member. Not the end of the world I would still definitely come here again. This time, my friend and I had the crab and smoked bacon chowder. It was delicious.

Wonderful meal, the good was delicious, service was very good, Michelle was great.

Appledoors classy gastro pub ..and hotel..offers great food and drinks

Very disappointing. Insufficient staff and those who were there were not well trained it seemed , although pleasant and the manager seemed very young and inexperienced. We had to call for everything as waiting staff were not scanning the room. Roast beef was excellent but belly pork was over cooked and rubbery and crackling burnt and inedible. The vegetables were uninspiring and lukewarm warm at best and the cauliflower cheese we ordered was forgotten and of course no one to ask! I put 3 eggs in my Yorkshire puddings so why the fuss over 2? We waited at least 40 minutes for our food to be delivered and many people around us waited longer. Some people were indiscriminately moved to another table and when then forgotten so had to go to bar to pay and order. We got our dessert menus and did not let waitress go until we had ordered, fearing we would never see her again initially we thought we my return here for an evening meal but obviously we did not and went to the Royal George instead which was excellent! My husband felt sorry for the waitress and left a tip but I would not have done as there was no service! Oh dear!

Pros: really nice restaurant, lovely welcome by the friendly staff. Cons: Food average ant best and overcooked. I had the nut roast wellington which was dry. My husband loves pork crackling but it was burnt to a crisp and he wouldn’t eat it through fear of a visit to the dentist!

A fabulous hotel and public house situated on the seafront in the old port town of Appledore. Five minutes drive from Bideford. Mouth watering menu, something for everyone including vegetarian options. Inside you will find a plush and cosy, split level dining area and bar with plenty of seating and two fireplaces. Good selection of real ales, beers, wines and spirits. Plenty of seating outside the front and rear. Excellent friendly efficient service at the bar, a big shout out to the two bartenders on duty, Jamie and Tom who made our visit memorable. We'll definitely lunch here again. Leaded dogs welcome and a menu available for them too! Highly recommend.

Wasn't impressed with the service or waiting nearly an hour for our meal to come out with no apology either and no communication throughout our waiting . It was busy but not manic .Food was average.not nearly as nice as when I came with friends last year .won't return

We only popped in for a quick bite, I was a little dissapointed. My chips were swimming in grease, the bottom of the bowl was a puddle of grease. I will try there again, as I've heard good things from friends. Hopefully just a bad day in the kitchen.

After delivering a talk and book signing session at the Appledore Book Festival, we arrived very late at the Seagate hotel looking to dine, but unfortunately, after the kitchen had closed. We received fabulous service from Michelle who refused to send us away hungry, and who insisted on making us some rather impressive ham and cheese sandwiches. Thank you for some really excellent customer service and caring for the welfare of your clientele.

Really disappointing. The food really did not stack up to the prices they were charging ... the most underwhelming vegetables with a roast dinner and an over-cooked burger. Plus the servers, while very pleasant and friendly seemed frazzled and left us sitting for 25 mins before we ordered.

Wow what a gem of a hotel. The deputy manager, Michelle is so friendly, so efficient. Nothing was too much trouble. She runs this busy beautifully decorated hotel like a dream. Appledore is probably one of the nicest villages in Devon. Talk about we felt like our springs unwinding. Thoroughly recommend the hotel and I wish all managers were as friendly and efficient as Michelle ! Thank you for a wonderful stay. We will definitely come again!

Stayed 2 nights having booked the Summer Nights deal.The room was lovely and spotlessly clean. We are in the restaurant on the first night delicious food and great service overall a really welcoming, friendly team. We will be back!

Waited for Al Ost three quarters of an hour to order though not particularly busy Worst crab sandwich I have come across white meat mashed into redmeat on top of thick mayonnaise .Bread dry..mentioned this to staff.chips thin overcooked. A real let down of a Devon treat.

We met with friends and had the most delicious Sunday lunch. Half a chicken each was never going to all be eaten, but we were able to take home a few legs!! I thought I was in heaven when offered extra Yorkshire puds. The waiter was fabulous, and he added to the jollity of the afternoon. Wines were very good and we consumed plenty. Thank you 😊

Food was nice but the service got slacker as the evening went on ! Unfortunately this seemed to be the case throughout the restaurant ! We would have had more drinks and a pudding but were left with our dirty plates in front of us for at least 30 minutes . The table next to us got the pudding menu but nobody returned to take an order plus they had to go to the bar for more drinks. Such a shame this place seems to have gone down hill !

I was so disappointed when we stopped to enjoy a coffee with family who live in the area. Having lived in North Devon for many years we used to regularly visit with our dogs and loved relaxing and enjoying both drink and food. The place was always pristine, packed with locals and visitors alike so we were anticipating struggling to even get a table especially as it was August bank holiday Monday at 11am. It was a lovely day too so alot of people were in the town. I was shocked to find the place empty inside and looking a lot less inviting than when we used to visit. But we only wanted coffee so that was okay...well so we thought!! The person in charge was so flustered and in such a rush that she wasn't listening to us as we ordered, resulting in only 2 of 5 drinks being served. We waiting 15 minutes for the remaining drinks and then chased, requesting fresh drinks for those who had them early... she wasn't that impressed but she agreed. I went up to wait for the drinks and again she was in such a rush that she didn't listen to my request, cutting across me and getting it all wrong. Then they took a long time to make 3 lattes plus and they still got the refresh order wrong. In a way it was a good job they were quiet as goodness knows how they would have coped if they were busy. I'm not sure what has changed so much that people have stopped going there and the service has become so poor. I hope it was just a blip but it's put me off wanting to go back.....

Lovely restaurant and bar,,the food is spot on,,,the landlord and landlady are the best in the business,,, I have been to many a pub restaurant but this by far the best experiences I have ever had.my server is fish the best there is ,,, full off joy and a lovely smile,, thank you.

This was our 6th stay at The Seagate Hotel since 2007 and I can't fault it. The food is delicious, the rooms are stylish and comfy and the staff are super friendly and helpful. The bar is really buzzy with a great atmosphere. And of course the location is great too.

Very disappointing. We ordered some coffees they didn't come together and the initial ones that did come went cold waiting for the rest. We then had to wait again as they got the order wrong again the second time. Eventually got it sorted and to be fair they did give us replacements for the two that went cold.

It's not often that we come away from a place feeling disappointed, but unfortunately we did after visiting The Seagate. The staff weren't particularly friendly, the food was extremely disappointing and definitely not good value for money. The only thing on the menu that appealed to me was a BBQ Pulled Pork Burger. This arrived and I found it tasteless and very dry. I certainly did not taste any of the BBQ. And the cherry on the cake, the burger cost the best part of £20. So, I don't think that I would return here, as for me, first impressions count. What I do want to add, is that this is only my experience. Everyones experience will be different.

Michelle was super helpful at meeting our needs when the Seagate was already busy. She went the extra mile to make us feel welcome and provided excellent service.

Loved this restaurant for a while but stopped going due to the way they deal with allergens. They give you a massive folder to plough through to look to see what meal you can have. Why not just put GF on the menu like most other restaurants. It’s hard enough eating out when you have an allergy without having to do all that!! I’ve been coeliac for 13 years now and most places have phased out the folder for either a separate allergen menu or a simple guide on the menu. People with allergies feel awkward enough eating out without having to be singled out with a folder when they walk in. The food was great and the staff very helpful and clued up, thankfully as I had missed that the fish and chips was gluten free and the waitress me I could have it.

None of us plus 2 dogs came for dinner on a busy Friday night. The service from everyone was excellent, but Noah really shone. The family all had a great time and the mussels were delicious!

Sat on a small table in the bar. Even though I booked the restaurant. Food was cold and bland. I was disappointed with the poor standards.

Booked online - the first part of the bookingvsays 'check availability', put in date and time and ten asked us to continue with the booking - got booking confirmation. Turned up 5 mins before our booked time, they checked their list then asked did you book online, we replied yes, got told oh there is a glitch with our online booking it does not match up with our own system - we were then told we are full, no space. All I can say is sort the glitch or remove online booking - attitude of staff was appalling - no apology- just we are full.

The food and service were incredible. We had booked as a group of families and the numbers did not phase our server at all. Noah was fantastic and made sure all our needs were catered for. He provided a fair few laughs along the way too. Thank you. The food was fresh and very tasty with a good range on the menu. No one had a single moan. We came for a late dinner after visiting the eden project, the staff were welcoming and friendly and the food was delicious. We loved this take on ham and egg and chips it was huge and cooked perfectly. Thank you for completing a perfect day.

As it was a beautiful evening I came in last night for a drink at the bar. Served by Maisie who was really friendly and she recommended one of the summer spritzers, Passionfruit kiss was superb. Spent a couple of hours soaking up the sun and atmosphere. Will definitely come again

Just returned from a brilliant midweek break at The Seagate Hotel. Hosted royally by Tony and Sian and their amazing team, nothing was too much trouble and our stay was perfect! (Pet friendly) Accommodation was very spacious for my wife, myself and our German Shepherd dog Eris, and boasted a massive bed, a corner sofa and even a Doggy Hamper!! Food and drink were both outstanding with a hearty menu and a great selection of spirits and cocktails. Location is stunning!! Right on top of the River Torridge with beautiful views across the bustling estuary, with dog-friendly beaches across the river in Instow, or around the headland to Greysands. All in all, a rather successful and relaxing time away!! Thanks Tony and Sian for your hospitality… we will see you and your team, (and your dogs!!!) in October!! Special praise is reserved for young Jamie!! The lad worked tirelessly morning, afternoon and night and always with a welcome smile on his face!! Thanks for looking after us… and the dog!! We shall return……
