This was a long awaited dinner with friends who had come to stay for the weekend. We booked a table for 8pm, however upon arrival we were told that our table wasn’t ready. At 8:50pm we were seated and another 15 mins wait for drinks. When we came to order we were told that the main fish dish had sold out, as well as all the potatoes. Our cab was booked for 10pm, so had half an hour to eat. Very disappointed.

We have eaten here a number of times. This visit was disappointing. The service was impeccable but the food was definitely below par. Whether everyone was depleted by the food festival l don’t know, but a much anticipated meal was distinctly underwhelming. Sorry.

This is a lovely small restaurant with attentive service and outstanding food. Whether dining off the fixed-price menu or a la carte, you are guaranteed to have a memorable meal that is expertly prepared. My only - and minor - criticism is that the wine list really needs to be expanded to include several additional choices.

We had a fabulous private dining experience in the Cantina at the Seahorse restaurant. There were 13 of us (the room takes 14) and we had excellent food, service and experience. The staff are superb - Sadie who did all the arrangements; Bronte who looked after us on the night; and Mitch who cooked superbly for us. A fabulous experience!

We have had lunch at the Seahorse twice now and on both occasions the food was delicious and the staff were great, the atmosphere was relaxing. We ordered from the set lunch menu which is 3 courses and we thoroughly enjoyed each course. My husband had the mussels, he said they were the best he’s ever had. Our experience so far, has been really lovely - it’s become our favourite place to lunch.

We visited Seahorse on Wednesday 28th of August to celebrate my partners 40th. To be honest, we were slightly reluctant as some of the last few reviews were negative. As we walked in, we were greeted and offered two glasses of Prosecco on the house, shortly after we were shown our table. We were waited on by Josh who was wonderful, attentive and very friendly. We thought the food was delicious, especially the Dover Sole and Pork Chop that we ordered for mains. The side dishes were excellent too, I especially enjoyed the vegetables being cooked to perfection, fennel was phenomenal. We had a good experience and would happily recommend the restaurant, if you love seafood, you won’t be disappointed.

We’ve been here twice to the bar for a drink in May and August. It looks lovely, but on both occasions the bar staff have been so over stretched, through no fault of their own because they were working at a million miles an hour, people were waiting over 30 mins for a drink or event to see a menu. We managed to get a seat and a drink quickly, but the champagne glass was half full, and then it took literally 30 minutes to try and pay. We chased down the bar lady twice, who was also tasked with waiting on the food table in the bar as well as making cocktails. They need dedicated staff in the bar, don’t ask her to wait on tables as well as making cocktails, it’s insane.

Our group of five were looking forward to eating at the restaurant which had been recommended to us. Unfortunately our experience was such a disappointment. We were asked to wait in the small bar area until our table was ready. This was over an hour after our booked time. Two of our party moved to sit separately from the rest in order that a group of four could be seated to eat in the bar. Our starters arrived an hour and thirty-five minutes after our booked time. The peach and cheese starter was watery and tasteless and the calves liver was served in a lump and was raw in the middle. Even after it was sent back to be sliced and cooked more it was still very unappetising and was taken off the bill. Four of the party had monkfish which was deemed to be good but not very warm. The pasta dish served to the other person was small, not very warm and looked very unappetising. Considering we had spoken to a member of staff in the morning about having an alternative to fish it was very disappointing. This dish was also taken off the bill. The waiting staff were very pleasant which was the best thing about the whole evening. This was an expensive evening and one where the experience left us feeling cheated. It was the poorest of the meals we had in our four day break and I would not recommend it to anyone.

The restaurant incorrectly recorded the time we booked personally with them to give us a table all evening We were rushed from the moment we arrived and were then told they needed the table back in 1.5 hours. We ended up having our dessert in the reception/bar area. The food was excellent, but the attitude of the staff, especially the waiter at front of house was very poor We were not charged for dessert but that was a token gesture on their part Disappointing and unnecessary, An expensive birthday meal ruined.

Underwhelming. My friend and I were so looking forward to our meal here but left desperately disappointed and a feeling of being completely underwhelmed. The evening started well with the delightful welcome and service in Joe's bar but then went down hill once we entered the restaurant. On reflection we feel they are missing the presence of an experienced Maitre De. Our table we were about to be lead to we had to wait as it was set as a table of four and not two (not a biggie). The bread delivered to nibble on whilst ordering was so salty you definitely did not need the extra salt provided. The starters we ordered were the Gambas and Scallops.. our fault for not reading the menu correctly but the Gambas was a ceviche.. one prawn by the looks of it sliced very thinly but completely and utterly over powered by such a vast amount of peppercorns that was all you could taste (as well as having to pick out from your teeth).. this small plate was £24! The fish for main course was perfectly pleasant , however, at £50 for a plate of fish one would expect it to be presented better, and somewhat elevated ... we ordered more wine just as we finished the starters, it had not arrived by the time we had nearly finished our main and we had to ask for it.. Bitterly disappointed as we so looking forward to it. At these prices however we expected a much higher level of experience. Left feeling somewhat cheated.

This was booked to celebrate my 50th birthday as a surprise. Even on the booking this was written and never acknowledged. Why ask on the booking form? The poor review is for a number of other things though 1) starts with the alley way you enter the restaurant, past some nice red industrial bins. Nice. 2) limited cocktails. Won’t make anything off the basic menu which is very gin based 3) no offer from the not very engaging bar tender to ask any questions to see if there might be something else suitable they could recommend. Not spending £12 x 4 for drinks that weren’t what you really wanted 4) you enter the restaurant down a corridor past the toilets and kitchen (men’s was out of order and the women’s felt dated and dirty) 5) where we were sat there’s a desk where the doors don’t shut and all the cables are hanging out. Alex politzi would have something to say! 6) food was very expensive and average 7) plates were small and my husbands lamb looked like a school dinner thrown on a plate 8) we had our table for 2.5 hours. We were done in an hour and 10. So disappointing. Won’t be back and won’t recommending Save your money. There are much better restaurants who deserve your custom and celebrations.

The food overall was well cooked and very tasty … However the presentation was unsophisticated and rather lacking finesse . I ordered Lamb as a main course which was expensive . The portion was over generous … the plate was loaded with thick slices of meat which was quite overwhelming and impossible to finish . I would have preferred a more delicate approach with seasonal vegetables and an attractive appetising presentation …. The service was excellent and attentive though a longer gap between finishing the starter and being served the main would have been nice . Overall it was a pleasant experience but very expensive

Nice ambience in the restaurant but tables are placed close together. Our meal was London prices... the quality of the ingredients was good but the dishes were unfortunately overspiced. My garlic scallops were mainly garlic resulting in the sweet flavour being completely overpowered. The cod loins in both our meals were way too spicy.... far too much chilli. A poor meal overall. This wasn't helped by slow service... the staff were too busy ironing tableclothes! Never seen this happen in a restaurant before when several tables are still occupied. Won't be returning.

We had a French 77 cocktail in Joe’s bar, then went through to our table. The restaurant feels quite intimate and the decor is quite French brasserie. We had the turbot with ratte potatoes and courgette frittie all of which was absolutely delicious. Dessert was the chocolate hazelnut mousse which was amazing. Espresso, Armagnac and cognac finished the night. Wonderful. Really love the people here.

This restaurant has a good reputation and I’d been looking forward to trying Mitch Tonks’ food for the first time. What a shame about the poor standard of both the starter and the pudding. And food should never come out on chipped plates - which I quietly pointed out to the waiter but he didn’t seem particularly bothered about it. There was kitchen paper on the starter plate underneath the pale and definitely not golden or crispy fritto misto - disappointing and a bit of a dampener to my appetite! The focaccia with anchovy butter was a promising beginning to the meal, the wine was lovely, and the gurnard with Romesco sauce was the highlight of the meal, but unfortunately it didn’t do enough to make up for the other issues.

Right on Dartmouth waterfront the Seahorse has a bright ambience and comfortable chairs. Ideal for a birthday lunch. Nice glassware and napkins but still no tablecloth. We had just missed a wine tasting at nearby Sharpham vineyard as it was hard to find so I asked for a glass of Sharpham sparkling. I was told it was a Mediterranean place and was offered sparkling Albariño; OK but a poor substitute.Imported sparkling San Pelegríno did not impress either when there is plenty of English mineral water. The wine list was only French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese and to my mind limited and pricey. The Vermentino at £40 was again OK but something from South Africa, New Zealand or Chile could have been much better value.I found the cods roe and another paste served with crisp sourdough bread a bit gloopy but my companion enjoyed it.We both went for the £20 set lunch. My companion was happy with hers.I had local mussels with a delicious sauce which did not profess to be mariniere. They were perfectly cooked, every one opened and they were served with a spoon and finger bowl.I then went for sand sole (never tried before) with tiny brown shrimps and probably some vegetables; I vaguely recall thin deep fried courgette. I cannot remember because again the fish was delicious and perfectly cooked. Firm yet falling off the bone.I have to confess that although we got off to a disappointing start and the wine list was not to my taste, they certainly know how to cook fish and the lunch itself was very good value

We visited the Seahorse, which had been highly recommended to us,for my special birthday. I booked the table 2 to 3 weeks in advance and confirmed ( twice) the day before. We got there half an hour early and had a drink in Joe’s bar where the lady member of staff was lovely- very friendly. We were taken to our table just before 7 and given some delicious antipasto. All staff were extremely friendly and helpful including the head waiter, who looked after us. We found the restaurant very noisy however and when our starter hadn’t arrived after 40 minutes we began to find it quite stressful! After about an hour - 8pm, the starter did arrive and we found it quite average. The main course was a further 40 minutes and again in our humble opinion seemed of average quality. The head waiter continued to be friendly and now apologetic even though we hadn’t complained about the wait, explaining that everyone had arrived at once ( which seemed a bit surprising as the restaurant is always fully booked sometime in advance) He offered us a free dessert and provided a free bottle of water. When we eventually were given the bill at about 9.15 the desserts had been charged. He then took the bill back and reduced it by 15%. We did not have an enjoyable evening although all staff were great. Surely if a restaurant is always fully booked, the timings should be spaced out in order for the chefs to cope and provided a timely service. A couple of days later we received an email from the Seahorse asking us for a review. We sent a diplomatic review privately with constructive criticism but as yet have heard nothing from them. This was over 2 weeks ago. We rarely complain and did not wish to spoil our evening, and that of other customers by making an issue of the situation. We found out later that some friends had called the restaurant and paid for a birthday drink for me and my husband, which we didn’t receive.

I should start by explaining that I don't eat a huge amount of fish. I obviously eat fish and chips and enjoy pan fried sea bream or sea bass. I'm a bit frightened by shellfish and don't like fighting with bones. As the menu at The Seahorse changes daily, and you have to book in advance you are buying a pig in a poke.So we gambled on the "locals" menu (really a cheap evening deal). The restaurant is beautifully decorated in a classic style. The dark wooden panels look as though they have been there forever. We accepted the offer of a pre-dinner drink and were led through a passageway at the rear of the restaurant to the bar (that has a separate door to Raleigh Street). It was completely empty and, therefore, a bit lacking in atmosphere.Back in the restaurant the tables are rather close together (about the same gap as in McDonalds). The food was OK. My plaice had loads of bones and one became lodged in my throat. I had to stand up in order to dislodge it. At the neighbouring table a fellow diner asked our opinion on his main course. Although the outside was cooked the inside was verging on the raw. It was impossible to get a knofe through it (a sharp steak knife might have done it). The fish was promptly removed - but later a member of staff claimed it had been cooked correctly. My cheese was the size of a Dairylea portion. A bit mean, even though I was on the "cheap" menu.My wife ordered a second gin and tonic. Without asking a double was brought (the first had been a single).I did like the fact that no automatic gratuities are added - although the final bill was still pretty steep. The staff were all very, very pleasant.Despite way higher rents and labour costs (and more difficult access to really fresh fish), I'm afraid it is easier to eat in better restaurants for less in London.

This review should be read in context of Mitch Tonks food with wine choice and service from Outlaws. I have posted an equivalent review on Outlaws at The Capital..We have dined at Outlaws on numerous occasions and always loved the food and service. We looked forward to this special evening and after the first two courses we were wowwed. A cured red mullet dish and cuttlefish risotto were fantastic, complemented by excellent wine choices.Unfortunately things took a major down turn from then onwards. The seabass main course was underseasoned, with flabbly not crisp skin, fried rather than braised artichokes was a real mistake and the salsa verde did nothing to improve the dish. Choice of Barolo to accompany the bass was poor - too acidic and did nothing to enhance the fish.Dessert of yoghurt mousse was no more than a palate cleanser.Service was disappointing - some tables were offered wine topups without request at an event where everything was prepaid - there was no consistent service to all tables. In addition coffee and service were charged as extras and our bill had incorrect items on it. At these sort of prices and standard of restaurant it should not happen. Not sure we would attend another 'special' event at one of our favourite restaurants.

As for the food? well I'm stumped for appropriate superlatives. I really can't say that any of our courses fell below excellent! Whilst I chose Dover Sole from the main menu, my two friends each selected the early evening prix fixe - most certainly the best, most imaginative we've seen in a long while. He has a great following on social media and is often endorsed by 'well-known celebrity chef's', but he spent most of his time during service on his phone (texting/talking/barely engaging with his sous chef etc. He was not taking pics of the food as other reviewers have said). Putting aside the hygiene issue, it simply left me with the impression that he was bored, didn't want to be there, didn't care about the food he was serving. When my Hake arrived, I was expecting a crispy skin, but the sauce covering the hake had made it soggy, and the presentation of the dish was not so neat or appetizing. Similar could be said about my scroppino where the black sambuca was messily put into it rather than the small single dot I had tasted/had before. This is only my second time at the Seahorse (I live in London) but it left me feeling very disappointed and I certainly feel that standards have slipped in the last two years. The maitre d' didn't even come and have a few words. This was such a difference to that first wonderful time.

Six of us had booked for 2115hrs 27th Sept. Arrived to a lovely warm welcome from the owner. Staff were equally as welcoming and certainly very knowledgeable on the menu and wines. We had a variety of fish starters and mains, all fantastic. Its no wonder this place is rated as the best restaurant in the country.

Having often heard positive feedback about the restaurant, decided to visit with my parents. They have been before and loved it, only being disappointed because they aren’t local. Unfortunately, we weren’t aware that the Sunday menu is the only option and none of the al la carte options are available. Whilst the starters and mains were great, the 2 dessert options were either goats cheese or poached peach which aren’t to my taste. That being said, the scallops and crab starters were fantastic, the red dory was cooked to perfection and the parents enjoyed their options too. The service from the staff is brilliant, they take the time to interact and explain dishes or recommendations - only dropped from 5* to 4 due to the pudding choices. On every other day it would have probably received a 5*. Prices are higher than other places, but their website shows them very clearly so it shouldn’t come as a shock to any visitor. Worth visiting for a special meal and lunchtime offers would make it affordable to try if unsure.

On arrival we were offered drinks which were excellent. However the Sunday menu is a bit limited as in the full a la carte options are just not available. The options for starters and mains were very good, but I found the dessert choice very limited, a choice of 2 desserts only; One was goat cheese based, the other ricotta, both of which I loathe. A cheese platter was not available which I felt was a bit short sighted. However it was a generally good experience.

This restaurant was recommended to us and we were pleased we chose it. Food quality was high and service was pretty attentive. There were a couple of issues but they were very well addressed and we felt most welcome. Would definitely visit again

The restaurant is crammed with tables which means there is very little privacy/intimacy. You virtually join the people sitting next to you. As a result, service is slow due to numbers. However, waiting staff are pleasant. The food is mediocre at best. Watched the chef take photos on his phone of meals going out - not particularly hygienic and not worth the pictures in all honesty. Over priced and over rated, there are better places in Dartmouth.

We had dinner here on Wednesday 13th Sept, the fish was excellent, we sat next to the window in the kitchen and watched our fish ( whole Brill ) be cooked by a young very competent chef, it was then fileted at our table for us, all a great experience to watch. Their is a lovely buzzy ambience in the restaurant and all the staff were great, they all seemed to have a nice camaraderie between them.

The Scallops were overcooked and almost burnt, the over cooked portion of John Dory for 3 was almost good enough portion for 1. This used to be my favorite resturaunt in the world hands down. This the third time of going recently and it keeps disappointing. I want the old seahorse back :(

There are few really good restaurants in Dartmouth and this is definitely one of them. The service was good and the food excellent. Being relatively small, the pressures on tables is high and we experienced a delay in taking our table at the correct time. Overall it was a great evening and well worth a se old visit.

Annual visit following a golf event with friends. We should have learnt from last years poor service as clearly they cannot accommodate parties larger than 4. This time we suffered again from advertised fish and popular wines not being available. The worst case as two starters were not available the head waiter (or duty manager) came back and offered us fish soup which we readily accepted. He then returned 10 mins later to confirm that this was not available either so we passed on starters. Main course we ordered (as described) a ray wing which was then served as a cut (half) as my friend and I seemed to have half a ray wing between us and I had the larger portion of that too, much to my friends disappointment.

As would be expected, the fish is fresh and cooked to perfection. One of our party had a crab starter which was very good, but two mouthfuls and it was gone. We had skate and lemon sole, excellent. The vegetables left a lot to be desired. It would have been good to have had some fresh green vegetable to compliment the fish, but instead we had half cooked chard stalks and a tomato dish which was frankly boring, and the portions were so small, understandable if we were to have a six course meal, but for three courses, disappointing. Likewise the puddings were nice, but small. Unlike other reviewers we were not put off by the slightly crowded seating, the buzz of other diners was companionable. Our wine, Chardonnay, good, but very expensive. The waiters and staff were very attentive, knowledgeable and helpful. On the whole, we enjoyed our meal, but felt it was grossly overpriced and lacking in the areas highlighted. Finally, on the evening we dined, the floor in the ladies toilet left a lot to be desired!

Meal was okay but I had the Lobster and the whole plate smelt burnt - presumably from the grill but it was quite a turn off. The lobster itself was dry and had no sauce or anything else with it. Not worth the price paid for it.

Travelled to Dartmouth on Thursday and came into town for dinner. This place has amazing food, the scallops are a must. We had scallops and the crab starter, both amazing. Shared a John Dory as a main. It was brought to the table in all its glory, the waitress then de-boned and served the fish to us which was lovely (and tbh i prefer it this way) ... but then took the dish away with all the sauce and flavour. That aside a really nice place to eat.

We had wonderful food at this restaurant; I have a food intolerance and the chef prepared a special dish, using much the same ingredients for me, he did so without fuss or bother and the service was gracious throughout. My dining friends had delicious fish and l had a steak dish...all beautifully cooked and served. A place to return to without doubt.

Fabulous choice , attentive but but informal service and beautifully cooked fish . We started with delicate crab which was teamed with fennel and celery , grilled baby squid which was rich and smoky and light octopus and potato flavoured Spanish style with paprika . Mains were charcoal oven Guernard which was rich and meaty , a perfectly grilled Dover sole and grilled whole John Dory

I had booked a table for Friday evening as a birthday treat for my partners birthday. I chose this restaurant because it had been recommended to me by family me,beers who had been many times. I was not disappointed at all! Greeted by warm and friendly staff (most of which seemed quite young) all of whom knew their jobs inside out and performed to a high standard. The lovely lady in the bar area was so friendly and warm as was the front of house gentleman and the waiters we dealt with throughout the evening.

I tried to book 2 days ahead and was offered 9.15 p.m. I arrived on time and was shown to a table. 20 minutes went by before my wine arrived. The starter I chose was finished. I chose again. Forty minutes after I arrived my starter arrived. No bread was offered.

Went for a birthday meal. The Seahorse provided excellent, well presented food and wine in a professional yet friendly manner, coping very well with a full restaurant. The menu was not over extensive, which was a good sign as they were able to concentrate on quality, which was their in abundance. Their were four of us and we had a good selection of the starters and main courses, leaving no room for desserts. By London prices our son assured us this was not expensive - for us country folk I would say it was in the upper bracket, but well worth it, and in fairness not as expensive as I was expecting

This used to be the best restaurant in Dartmouth. The service you could not fault. The scallops to start were great. The razor clams were full of grit. The main course of John Dory for 3 was overcooked and a small portion. The salted Honey ice cream was far far too salty. Every time I go now I wish for it and hope for it to be as good as when it first opened. But it just isn't and someone will have to give me a truly amazing review for me to go back. Not the seahorse I remember.

We realise that this restaurant cannot provide a large menu especially during the autumn /winter but on our evening the fish choice was not on (replaced with a lazy prawn dish) and out of two desserts the crumble was also not available! Feel this is lazy as there is so much fish available locally and the excuses to not provide an apple crumble is in fact rather lazy from the kitchen. If you only want to offer pizzas and burgers, fine but don’t disappoint people with omissions.

Although the food was nice, the portions were minute and my entire lunch (for which I paid over £10) had about 300 calories in it (half a pitta bread, two lettuce leaves, a tiny pot of hummus, a few carrot and cucumber sticks and five olives). Fine if you are on a seriously calorie counting diet, but not if you’re looking to feel replete. Atmosphere today: very quiet. No one talking much.
