The Sands House in Kirklees

We have eaten here many times over the years. It can often get busy at awake times meaning a longer than normal wait on out meals ordered. But staff always warn us of any delay in getting food out. Staff are always polite and courteous and really try to make customers feel welcomed. The pub has a very laid back feeling and isn't where I would choose to fine dine. But their hone made food always provides exactly what it says on the tin. Good home made grub in relaxed settings. The pub itself is looking worn and could do with a deep clean of the seats and outdoor areas of which were previously always full of flowers and pots on each table improving the appearance. But with a few updates and more staff at busy periods it could be perfect as the local pub again.

Good food at a good price if using the 2 meals for a set price menu. Nice outside area if it's a nice day and plenty of parking. The nacho started was fantastic aswell only thing that would make it better was Guacamole

Popped in on a Sunday afternoon. Lovely staff. Good was amazing. Well worth a re visit. Had a Beef SOP. Wow !!

As we went during the afternoon, it's not the best time to judge the atmosphere. The food was great, the service was quick and very polite.

Not a great choice of ale but the food has always been good the last few times we've had it.

Lovely pub in the middle of nowhere. Chose this pub as half way between Staffordshire and hull to meet up with friends we met on holiday. Made to feel very welcome and huge table reserved for the 9 of us. Main meals were brilliant, lovely and tasty and fresh and good portion size. The homemade chips were proper chips and none of these awful frozen ones. Onion rings were amazing too. We were all really impressed with our main meals. Sadly the puddings were pretty bad, very bland, dry and in general not good. Could have said something but we were happy with the main meals, drinks and service. Would definately recommend but wouldn’t have a pudding again

Food was excellent. I am the worse person for being so food critical. The fish was delicious... very large. I struggled after the starter... the price was good. 2 people 2 starters 2 drinks 43 pound and some pence. The service was brilliant. Staff lovely and a proper yorkshire welcome. The singer was very good. Would highly recommend.

Nice little pub with good selection of beer however there are always people sat at the bar so getting served is a pain...

Midweek treat, wished we hadn't wasted our money. Fish and chips were ordered but weren't really up to standard. Batter was oily and soft and actually uncooked inside. The chips altho lovely and chunky looking we're actually greasy, limp and slightly undercooked. Mushy peas were like cheap tinned mushy peas and only a small helping. Our last meal there I think.

Lovely food , super portions and quite busy

Nice place, not been here before. A pricier than I was expecting, but that is how things are going these days. I did struggle with the menu as I am lactose intolerant, but settled on fish n chips. Nice large fish that was practically hanging over the edges of the plate with tasty thick cut chips. I didn't have the mushy peas, but others in my group said they were nice. There's a decent choice of drinks, and the service for the bar and restaurant was quick and helpful, with the staff efficient and attentive. Will definitely go again.

Go for a nice few drinks on a sunday evening nice and relaxed

Just had a meal here and my mouth still tastes of washing liquid my wife had to leave her dinner plus had to wait far to long.wont be going back

loved our meal here on a bank holiday, great service, seating and my wife and i loved the choices we made. a pub kebab for me and a perfect pastry pie for her.

Absolutely exquisite food! Good size portions and all home cooked! It’s an absolute gem very attentive even though busy!! Will be definitely back 👍🏻

Poor service, terrible food and small portions. Other than the beef itself, the carvery meal was ridiculously poor - the mash was congealed and tasteless, the roast potatoes hard and obviously reheated and the vegetables were overcooked and soggy. The portions were very small as they "needed to save what was left for the rest of the evening" at 5.15pm - apparently they couldn't cook fresh/additional food. Added to a poor attitude from the guy servicing to having to ask for the bill 4 times as the staff were busy chatting to each other, this is definitely one to avoid.

Good pint of Black Sheep. Good friendly service. Pie of the day was delicious. Short crust pastry a must! Good fat chips and mushy peas. Chicken burger yummy. The only negative was the very stained upholstery in the higher level dining area. Would have preferred a table in the pub.

Came for a date night tonight as we have been once before and the food was really good that time. this time the food was slighlty dissapointing as the burger was tasteless and the fish was a bit greasy but apart from that the the rest of the food was good and the staff were great couldnt fault them at all thanks

Food was good enough for us to want to go again but service was extremely slow due to lack of staff. Didn't really matter as it was a rare family reunion so time was immaterial on this occasion.

Stopped in on the way back from the Peak District. Friendly staff and delicious pub grub. Dog and toddler friendly.

Pub clean,staff very pleasant.One negative allowing someone to vape,then seeing someone near the kitchen vaping,otherwise a pleasant beer.

Went to meet up with a friend food was really good just a shame for those that may have a gluten intolerance as selctiin os very limited to what they can have . Would definitely go again though

Had a wedding reception here for 30 people. We had the mixed meat carvery which was excellent. Plenty of meat and vegetables all cooked to perfection and served without fault. A great selection of drinks and the staff were all very friendly and helpful. We had a great afternoon and enjoyed everything about our visit. Highly recommended.

Well presented pub with cozy interior and plentiful parking. There's a fair amount of seating inside and an abundance of it outside, looking out to the fields and open spaces behind the pub. During winter the fireplace(s) are used if you like to sit next to a crackling fire. The venue is dog friendly. Service is pleasant. Menu seems to change from time to time so it's hard to recommend specific items as they may be gone by the time you visit. Taste-wise the food ranges between ok and great with my favourite dish being the slow cooked braised beef with mash and gravy. The food is quite a good value with large portions and sensible prices. The one thing to improve upon would be to adjust the cooking times so that the pastry on your pie isn't hard and chicken burger is not so well done (not to say burnt).

Had the special francesca Portuguese sandwiche which must have been thought up from someone on drugs it was terrible . Bread inside was cheap The sauce was the best thing

An absolutely excellent carvery at a great price. They let us take the leftover beef from my plate home. Bread sauce and stuffing would be good additions, but otherwise fantastic value for money and wonderfully cooked locally sourced food.

We had food here lovely places the waitress was lovely the food was amazing but sat down stairs in the lower restaurant and it was freezing 🥶

Great food on the 2 for £20.00. Proper home cooked, fresh and tasty. I had the Beef Sop! Superb. Staff very friendly too. Would recommend.

Great selection on the two meals for £19.00. lovely service provided. We tried the chicken kebab which was delicious and good selection of sides as well. Recommended.

Excellent place for a quiet and tasty lunch.

Spent a good few hours there today. It was the first time in a long time, and I was pleasantly surprised. Can't fault the excellent service and food. If you get a chance, go and sample the goods for yourself. You won't be disappointed 👍🏽

Went to The Sands House for some lunch with the in-laws and was pleasantly surprised. Never been before so it was nice to see something different on the menu. We had garlic mushrooms on toast and prawn cocktail for starters and I was so impressed with the presentation I forgot to take a picture lol. The toast was a baguette, not just a slice of bread. And the creamy garlic sauce was amazing. The prawn cocktail was as expected the portions were very nice. We had fish, chips and mushy peas, chicken kabab and chips and lamb stew and mash. The chips are home made and very nice, the fish was massive, chicken lovely and tender. I was struggling to decide between the beef and lamb so ask our servicer what she would recommend and she said the lamb. I am extremely happy I asked, because the lamb was so tender it melted in my mouth and the mash was very nice too. We visited in the afternoon so it was very quiet. The prices were reasonable too, I am definitely going to return and I will be recommending this place to everyone. Part 2: visited Sands House again 12.03.24, at about 12:30, four of us for lunch, they have a 2 for 19.99 deal on through the week. It was a bit more busy today, not so tranquil but we could still hear each other talk, we had 3 starters 4 mains and 1 desert, 2 juice's and 2 cups of tea and the bill came to just over £70. We had to wait a little while for our order because it was busy, but it was worth the wait. The lady that served us was on the floor on her own again but seemed to be able to handle things nicely with patients and understanding. Very happy will be returning.

Reasonable place, reasonable food and reasonable service. Would swap the sandwich chips for home made any day of the week..... Side salad a bit lonely.....could do with peppers or just prepping up a bit.. Beef was OK, bread could be fresh or even baked.... It was ok

Great Sunday Roast cavery and service.

An excellent venue for food. They have a good menu and are one of the better pubs for home cooked food. Their prices are good too and are highly recommended.

I've been coming to the Sands House since I was 4 years old and it's back to the lovely old pub it used to be with well tendered log fires and bloody good ale. The food was excellent, we had steak and ale pie n chips and the chicken burger. Huge, perfectly cooked chips and delicious gravy made this one of the best steak and ale pies I have ever had. Our 9 month old baby was with us and she was made very welcome. Great service too. Thanks

Great food, fantastic building and decor. When we arrived there was an open fire and a log burner both going, which was welcome as the weather was atrocious! The lady who served us was very kind and attentive to our needs. Highly recommend a trip here.

It's a cosy rural pub where ' good ' dogs are welcome , the staff are absolutely fantastic, helpful & cheerful. The chef cooks the most awesome meals & would recommend any of the dishes . There was 7 of us in total most of us had a 3 couse meal , if not 2. Will definatley be going back for more.

This place is lovely, it's not the open fire and the warming ambience that gives this place its five star rating its the staff!! and excellent food!!

Not bad ,but disappointed they called last orders a 10 pm Christmas Eve ,but then again, the pub was very quiet ,but closing early won't get customers back

What a disappointment. Visited on a quiet Thursday lunchtime. Had to stand at the bar a while before being "greeted" by a rather curt lady that gave the impression we were distrubing her peace and quiet. We sat at the table and were given menus. A fish sandwich and beef sandwich were ordered. The beef was little triangles of white bread with a bit of beef stuck in them and a dry salad and very anorexic fries. The fish was slightly better in a ciabatta - but minus the salad. It also came with the anorexic fries. The portion size was small. It reminded me of the kind of food you can buy in a second rate canteen. With two pints of Osset Blonde, the bill was almost £30. Sorry Sands House. If you are going to charge a tenner for a lunchtime sandwich with "chips", you need to work much, much harder than that. At half the price you charged it's still poor. . It just wasn't nice to eat. We won't be returning.

Very friendly staff, fantastic food at a reasonable price, and a great atmosphere, especially with the wood burner and traditional features.

Very nice food (braised steak with mash, extra veg on the side/pie with chips and peas/grilled chicken and bacon sandwich with fries), good pricing. They do have hot drinks too. Warm, cosy atmosphere. Would eat there again and highly recommend. Clean toilets.

Very busy. We were served quickly and efficiently by the one waitress on duty. Cannot praise her enough. She was attentive and we never had to try to attract her attention. The food was lovely ( moussaka for me, chicken and mushroom pie for my friend). This is now on our list of places to visit for lunch.

Great Sunday Lunch! Met up with family for a very swift lunch. Great service. Friendly pub. Plenty of parking. On several different levels so bear this in mind if you have any mobility issues.

We eat out at local pubs most weekends, sands house had fallen under our radar for last few years ,what have we been missing out on. Plentiful and tasty starters, and steak and ale pies stuffed to the brim too full for pudding ,all great value and as an added bonus got to sit next to the real fire

It's an iconic Huddersfield pub and our local for drinks. The food is pub grub but not many healthy vegetarian options. Beer garden is legendary on a summers day. Give this place a try as it's part of the towns heritage

Nice and cosy quite pricy was over 80 for me partner and two kids.

The meal we had at the sands was absolutely gorgeous and we had starter mains 2 spirts and a bottle of wine all for under 65 pounds well done to the chef and staff

EXPENSIVE BEER @ £4.20P CHEAPEST...NOT MANY IN....

We stopped her in the motorhome for something to eat and drink. However Thursday is quiz night so we decided to join in. We had a lovely night. The food was really good and so many options and value for money, but it was the staff that made it special. Polite friendly helpful such nice people. It’s a really good motorhome stopover and it’s on my list of places I intend to return to.

Absolutely disgusting ! Beef was like a stone. Veg was like a stew. The Yorkshire puddings we’re inedible ! Excuse was they need better food storage when serving ! Never came over to ask how our meal was , never offered us a free drink ! I am totally disgusted will never dine here again , wouldn’t recommend

Great food, checked the mene & all items on the menu looked / sounded beautiful. Sat in the beer garden which was huge, had a great play area for the children & plenty benches for everyone. Reasonable prices & great staff, always coming around & taking away the empty glasses. The place was busy, which i see as a good sign, but also had plenty of seats & tables so you weren't stranded & stood up.

Food was great, staff rather lexical, taking plates away while one was still eating, mentioned pudding but never actually came back to ask. Couple eating at side of us asked for their bill, they were given ours, so we paid and left.

We called in and they were more than happy to seat us for tea with no booking. The food was absolutely delicious. The nachos to start were homemade, the beef burger and chips was lovely, and the steak and ale pie was the best we’ve had - without exaggeration!! Would 100% recommend here for food.

Good grub, good beer, good service and at an excellent price. What more could you want. Would have loved to have had a pudding but the carvery beat me. As the ex governor of California once said "I'll be back"

Went for a Carvery as Iv been previous and it was lovely however this time I was highly dissatisfied! The Turkey was extremely dry! The chef couldn’t even cut it so he plonked a massive lump on the plate. Vegetables were over cooked and mushy. The beef was over cooked and looked like a leather boot. The mash potato…. Well…. it was like grey baby food. In the whole 30 years between us working in the food Industry, I have never seen mash like it and to top it off the rude manageress came over to tell us that ‘in actual fact it’s just pepper’ she was very confrontational until we told her it was constructive Criticism and we wasn’t making a compaint. Due to this I have now took it upon myself to write this review with the disappointing experience we’ve had.
