August 2024. Touring around the Lakes. Visited The Salutation Inn for an evening meal and some drinks On arrival we were greeted in a very friendly manner ordered drinks and food then took a table outside. The food came to the table in good time. Smelt good and was hot as should be. My Wife had the Lamb shank with vegetables and I had a pizza. The special mighty meat. All the good was really good and we left well satisfied Would definitely return.

We were advised to eat at the horse and farrier and avoid this pub but, as we’re not really into ‘pub grub’ which is what they serve at the horse and farrier, we decided to come to the salutation to try a pizza and we’re so glad we did. We ordered a 10” spicy meat pizza, herby fries, onion and tomato salad and a baked feta. It was perfect. One of the best pizzas we’ve eaten! Great service too!

We have ate twice here for mains and another occasion just had a dessert. All 3 times have been sublime! First Visit; Had a few drinks in here and a dessert. We had the Chocolate Egg with fruit Salad. It was absolutely amazing. Under the fruit salad was a mango mousse which was complete bliss. After we consumed the dessert we found out that it's all home made, including the half an Easter egg. Hats off to the chef and the team here it tasted brilliant. Second Visit; We had Pizza, again this was superb. Fresh and delicious! Even had Pizza boxes to take home the bits we didn't eat. The fries were all excellent with a tiny hint of rosemary! Yet again you can tell the dish was freshly prepared and cooked. Third Visit; We had the Pork and yes, Pizza again. (The pizza is that good!) Brilliant! Thanks to everyone who made our evenings in your establishment exceedingly good. When we return to the lakes we will certainly be back here!

We stayed for three nights and apart from the en-suite facilities in our room, which were tiny and barely adequate (see our comments in TripAdvisor on the Horse and Farrier which controls overnight bookings) we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We had friendly conversations with staff, locals, and visitors in the bar each evening and although there was only one cask ale available (Wainwright) it was in excellent condition. Likewise, the food – a limited menu but we enjoyed a really good meal – better than the meals we ate across the road in the Horse and Farrier. We suspect many people gravitate to the H and F for the greater choice of food and drink available there. But greater choice isn’t necessarily better quality and the Sally deserves better than being regarded mainly as an annex for the higher profile pub across the road.

The Salutation Inn gave us a warm friendly welcome whenever we popped in for a meal and a drink. The food was hearty and well presented and went down smoothly with a pint of Wainwrights. Friendly pub patronised by well behaved dogs with lovely views from the outside seating area - weather permitting. Only downside was it was closed several nights but the sister pub across the road the Horse and Farrier was equally accommodating. Well worth a visit for food and drink.

Pleasant establishment with a nice cold pint after climbing blencathra but my god do not be defrauded by the robbery of a food menu. I can accept a bad meal or a small portion but when you pay £15 for spaghetti meatballs and it is fresh from a tin then you have to start sticking up for yourself. Have you ever had spaghetti hoops? Imagine that with tinned faggots and one shaving of parmesan to tart it up. The pizza dough was a flat and rotten as a can of carlsberg at the end of a party. When asked how the food was I explained that it wasn't great and questioned the legitimacy of the pasta as I'd at least expect it out of a packet. How hard is it to boil some spaghetti and chopped tomatoes. I was then told the pasta was hand made. I nearly soiled my Berghaus. They then got very defensive and offered no apology before aggressively running back to the kitchen. Absolute farce and consumers beware as you cannot polish a turd as they say.

We stayed here for three nights on a recent trip to the Lakes. It is run by The Horse & Farrier, just down the road, and look out for deals like '3 nights for 2' which we booked and thought was good value. The Sally is really just what you want a village pub to be, but with rooms, and if this was my local I'd be a very happy bunny! A bar / dining room that is comfy and cosy, but fairly basic, serving good a choice of beers and with really good pub grub. We were told they use the same chefs as the Horse & Farrier, and while the menu is a bit smaller and more basic, and the surroundings not as posh, the food is every bit as good. On the night we ate there I had the chilli and my husband had the burger, and we both very happy with our choices. Our room was comfortable and well done, though little bits like the odd bulb not working and a bit of mould on the shower screen just let it down a bit. Hence 4 stars not 5. However it was perfectly good for the price we paid and we wouldn't hesitate to stay again, particularly as dogs were welcome.

Small group for Sunday evening meal, and we all chose from the roast of the day menu (Beef or Turkey) The beef was apparently good but the turkey had obviously been around since lunchtime and was rather dry & tough, despite the generous portions of gravy. On the plus side the home made Yorkshire pud & veg seemed to be freshly cooked and was top-notch. They tried hard for a homely atmosphere but the place is a bit big for that. The real downer was cigarette smoke drifting in on a couple of occasions from outside the back door.It served the purpose - we would go back but not before we'd tried the Horse & Farrier across the road.

We've been to the Horse & Farrier for food which is in the same village but i have heard bad reports about the Sally so have never tried it. We decided that we would try it. There was Turkey or Beef. We both had the beef. It came with a huge home made yorkshire pudding, 2 roast potatoes, carrots, green cabbage, mashed potato and gravy. Everything was cooked to perfection. Then we both had sweet. My friend had the raspberry cheesecake with cream and I had the sticky toffee pudding with cream. Mmmmmm, absolutely gorgeous. Mine was tasty & so light & my friend said the same about hers. The only fault that I can make is that the gravy had to many peppercorns in for me. The barman, Colin, was so friendly & polite. I will definitely be returning here on my next visit to the lakes.

Trying out camping for the first time, staying at a campsite over the A66. Wandered through the village stopping off in the other pub first. To be honest I felt out of place in the first pub, we weren't eating and had our little dog with us, we didn't stay but carried on down the road to this establishment. It was still busy but the atmosphere felt much more laid back. We sat near the pool table away from the diners and enjoyed a few drinks while listening to the music on the sky channels. We got chatting to the manager (very friendly) he told us how to find the old railway line walk into Keswick. He showed us their food menu (different from the website and similar to the other pub) he said that there was a group playing tomorrow night (friday) we booked a table there and then. We really enjoyed our meal and the duo playing were all right too. If you are after a down to earth place to eat then this is a great place to stop. The staff we encountered were very friendly. Becides, I pointed out - its gonna be a real treat coz it comes with homemade tartre sauce. Not only do they make their own sauce they put it in tiny little plastic bags which have markings on where to rip them open and to help further so you can distinguish them from other sauces they have them labelled. Thoughtful x lolQuick service, relaxed atmosphere, food served hot and reasonably priced. Its just good pub food. The menu just needs amending, or better still knock up your own tartre sauce.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

Well where do I start? As a large group we were asked to order a few days before our planned meal, we did so and our orders were confirmed. Pretty strange and never had to pre order at a restaurant before but I understand the reasons for logistics and preparation reasons. Because we pre ordered our food and made an arrival time we assumed our food would be ready within a short amount of time after arriving. We assumed wrong, the first meals came out about 1 hour after we arrived (we arrived perfectly on time) and the remaining came out randomly for another 30 minutes after. That was bad enough but 2 orders were completely forgotten and required the staff to be called over to get the 2 forgotten meals made. We were lied to by the staff by being told that they are nearly done and on their way yet we could clearly hear them shouting to the chef to find and cook the meals. The meals themselves varied from 'almost average' to inedible. The burgers were mediocre and the pizzas were nothing special. However the worst were the pasta meals, they were overdone, bland and tasteless apart from the incredibly overpowering salt which caused a stinging sensation in the mouth which was unbearable after only one fork full.In relation to the forgotten meals the staff at no point said sorry or even tried to be polite, courteous or understanding. This is the quality you expect in possibly an NHS bed or at a cheap child day care centre. The prices are a premium cost and are on par with much better premises. The pizzas were the same quality as Aldi's 99p range, the burgers were below the McDonalds pound saver menu and Tesco's meal deal pasta pots were infinitely superior to the pasta served at the Sally. When it came to pay the staff member had no care of how the meal and service was, all she wanted was the money out of our hands and us to get out her sight. She never asked how the meal was, barely even made eye contact and had the personality of a brick. So in conclusion, strongly advise you to avoid this restaurant if you have taste buds that you dont want to kill and want to experience service that makes you feel welcome. If I had to find a positive it would be that their pool table was in resonable condition!

At the risk of repeating my previous review of the Horse and Farrier, just let me say that we tried both venues in the same week. The difference being that we went back to the Salutation. The places are reputedly owned by the same people, and it appears to be no accident that the target clientele is different. Don't be fooled by the fact that the H&F will probably be busier, it is after all predominantly a restaurant. However, if you are after a real pub, you will find the "Sally" much warmer. Unlike the H&F, the Sally serves a greater variety of Real Ales, and also serves great food. Add to that the Sky Sports TV, and you get the picture (pardon the pun). If you want a restaurant go to the H&F. If you want a pub, go to the "Sally". 'Nuff said!

We walked from Keswick to Threlkeld on Bank holiday Monday, looking forward to a nice bar lunch at " The Sally ", what a disappointment to say the least !Firstly the barmaid served us with drinks, while talking on her mobile phone ! she even tucked it under her chin to carry on her conversation while she pulled a pint !!My husband ordered a "big burger" and when it came out, the top f the bread bun was burned black ! but he said it didn't matter and not to make a fuss. Then they appeared with my " Sally club sandwich" and no joke, it was toasted and absolutely burned black ! how on earth anyone could send out a sandwich looking like that is beyond me ??So i took it back and the lad who took it from me made no apology, he then arrived back with a new bit of toast on the top, but the had the cheek to use the burned piece in the middle! One tiny piece of chicken and 1/4 rasher of bacon in between two bits of toast and some limp lettuce between the other bit............and for £8.50 !!We were all looking forward to homemade chips ! what a laugh, they were those awful skinny fries like McDonalds, but with no taste and my hubby said god knows what the burger was made from.As someone else has already said, the change of ownership seems to have ruined it's once good reputation.Maybe we hit on a bad day ? but we'll not go back to find out !

What was once a cozy and genial local pub has now become a generic, bland dining room with food to match. The venerable snug has been knocked down and the open plan room makes the bar feel like a serving area and not the sociable standing space it once was. The prices would not be out of place in London and the two pizzas we had managed to be burnt and soggy at the same time which is quite a feat. They have a hamburger on the menu for £10 - in a village pub! The owners, who also have the Horse and Farrier, have become estranged from the plot I believe. Even the new name "The Sally@ Threlkeld" is just wrong. The final straw though was when we noticed that the memorial bench for a local girl called Sally Ann has been moved along to the Horse and Farrier. As far as we know Sally Ann was never a habitué there and it should be back in the garden at the Salutation where it belongs.

This pub looks pleasing to the eye but when you expect good food service and value for your money this is truely misleading. I was not impressed with the food and my stay there was short of uncomfortable. Would I visit again, no. After a long walk you might want to unwind by a nice coal fire with typical bar meals but in my opinion the owners of this place want it to be a five star restaurant. It needs to be what it is, a pub that should have good bar food without the restaurant wanna be image.
