Changed a lot, but still a great pub

Great traditional pub, great music and relaxed ambience.

Lovely late Victorian pub survival, just a shame no food at weekends when we visited, though bar staff kindly reserved a table for the rest of our party while we went in search of food.

Bollington ales owned by Manchester Metropolitan University. Service and food excellent. Cider also served. Chilled tea time atmosphere. Beers all worth a try. An oasis in student land.

Considering the peak-time midweek bustle, the Sal continues to have a warm welcoming atmosphere, providing a sophisticated array of drinks in a classic English pub decor. I had a local ale and enjoyed.

Came expecting a good lunch but no food served today. Gutted. Website misleading.

Great pub. Notable for being the site where Charlotte Brontë wrote Jane Eyre when it was a 19th Century boarding house.

Good selection of craft beer good service didn't try the food and visited as soon the pub opened at lunchtime so couldn't comment on atmosphere as only 2of us in

A pub is supposed to be a welcoming, friendly place. When the barmaid hardly looks up, let alone interacts with you, that puts a big damper on the experience, and tonight's scantily clad young thing behind the counter (who's she dressed for?) seemed to want to be anywhere else but behind the bar. Fine, go get a job somewhere else and let a person who enjoys working at a pub replace you.

Great pub, perfect for chilled pint or work meeting in function room upstairs. The staff are always lovely too. Big recommend!

Beautiful pub dwarfed alas by 'recent' construction. Still,well worth a visit with 5 cask ales on when I called. Very quiet for lunchtime though ..

Very good pub owned by Manchester Metropolitan University and run by the student union. The pub is a tap for the Bollington Brewery and had five cask beers - and 1 cider - on handpump when I visited. Lots of outdoor seating most of it covered.

The staff were absolutely brilliant and very friendly 😀

Old world pub hidden in the University campus, just away from the bustle of Oxford Road. Great selection of ales, now linked in with Bollington.

Great pub for a group, food was well-cooked and reasonably priced. Huge selection of beers, ales and lagers.

Reasonable prices. Eat in the pub, but sadly the food wasn't hot - the mash was actually cold.

Very friendly staff and cheap drinks. Great if you need to book out a space for a small get together or a university event.

The Salutation is housed in a lovely old building and has pleasant and charming décor. It does not serve food at weekends nor does it offer free wi-fi to all customers. It is surrounded by MMU buildings, and staff and students can access their university wi-fi from inside The Salutation. I attended on a Saturday afternoon in search of a hot meal and wi-fi. As neither was available, I ended up leaving without buying anything.

Nice for a University associated pub. Seems to be refit recently but still has a good "old pub" feel.

Friendly and a bit of old in a world of new

I used to frequent the Sal when I lived in Hulme, long before it was taken over by the University. It was at that point a little rough around the edges, and it's future didn't exactly look bright - still, Frank Sidebottom was an ad-hoc performing regular, and that made it all OK. Fast forward to one winter's night in 2022, and although it clearly hadn't moved an inch, it looked and felt like it was in a completely different place - from the outside, lit-up and surrounded by shiny and modern looking University buildings, you feel like you're in some kind of grandiose museum - unusual, but I quite like that. If this is what it takes to save a wonderful building like this, then so be it On the night of me and my friend's visit, England were playing in the football World Cup so we were in need of some urgent respite away from the tanked up hoards of Christmas jumper bells and nowty security guards. Inside, the pub was refreshingly calm, and happily the interior hadn't changed much - the exquisite ceiling design was still in place (rest assured the pattern pre-dates the birth of a certain Austrian dictator's political party). The ale - provided by Bollington Brewery - was confidently given the thumbs up by myself and all in my party. I had Bollington Best - it was fresh and light tasting. They also do food, but I'm yet to indulge. The staff, which at that point seemed to be made up mostly of University students, were friendly, chatty and very helpful. All in all I'd say this is now one of the best pubs in Manchester - a few minutes walk from the city centre, but a world away its late-night slightly chaotic nature.

Fantastic vegan options especially round this festive season. Pubs always rammed with a mixture of students and locals. Favourite place to go for lunch, proper lovely atmosphere and food!

Great pub - genius idea - proper immaculate Victorian boozer (superb architecture) - as a student union bar. Tucked away amidst the increasingly impressive high rise MMU campus - it's a real oasis with decent ale and well priced grub (Inc selection of Pie Minister specials). Nice touch with a blue plaque inside commemorating Frank Side Bottom's last go. Well worth checking out.

Gorgeous old pub. Food menu homely and great value for money. Great drinks menu at really reasonable prices for city location. Service great and music fantastic. Well worth a visit .

Great old style, traditional looking Pub. Great beers, even greater choice of beers, ales, ciders, wines, spirits and liqueurs. All served by excellent bar staff. Also, great food on offer all accompanied by a pleasant, friendly atmosphere. Will definitely eat and drink there again, no problem.

The Salutation was a wonderful place to end my nostalgic stroll around the campus. The pub is in great condition & so is the range of Bollington cask ales. Well done Dermot! Looking forward to another visit in september & listening to some more of your Mcr tales!

Charlotte Brontë who is said to have started her famous "Jane Eyre" at this 19th century inn might have saved this placed from eaten up by this interchangeable faceless university buildings. The dark stout beer and the veggy burger are good, staff is nice and the typical locals complete the picture of an normal pub - just avoid looking out of the window, it's too bizarre. Highly recommended!

On a night of nostalgia. A pub i hadnt been in for about 30 years. Cleaner and staff alot more helpful than i remember. Grest srlection of drinks snd food.

Nicely renovated old pub which once stood forlorn among demolished areas but now is surrounded by Manchester Metropolitan University buildings. Two or three cask beers and a current (2022) CAMRA Good Beer Guide entry.

If your a historian then pay this place a visit. Blue plaque outside reads, Charlotte Bronte stayed here and began writing her novel Jayne Eyre... Inside you'll find a selection of ales and some great conversation.... Doesn't sell mant traditional largers though

Lovely pub with a variety of real ales and ciders, also a real genuine folk music session on every other Tuesday apparently!

It's okay... the menu is very small and consdering the prices probably not worth it unless you get free money on your Met Card. They recently redecorated slightly and got rid of the dartboard so they're now missing the one unique feature they had. There are some board games to play but they're all old - Scrabble is broken and Cranium has mouldy clay. Ultimately it's not much fun or good food. I'd stay away unless the Union is full and you get it free.

I attend the folk music sessions here and the pub is always very welcoming of musicians :)

Curiously under-patronised pub with pricey pints, bare boards (but no sawdust or spittle) and surprisingly few students. Food served, which looks OK - if lacklustre - bar staff strangely unenthusiastic getting towards reluctant and mildly belligerent, the overall experience somewhat underwhelming and hollow.

A bit hidden but worth finding. Decent real ale at this pub which I think is run by the Students Union. Not far from the All Saints area of the city and handy for the RNCM.

Great pub next to the Manchester Metropolitan University, tucked away so not too busy! I had a lovely vegan chicken burger which I very much enjoyed, yum! Friendly staff too, highly recommended! :-)

Beer is a bit hefty in price, but that aside, it is a nice little boozer.

Good beer, popular edge of campus hangout for students, outside area at the front and the spiciest snacks ever.

Staff very miserable.... Beer not that good.... Tables not clean often because if leaning on them.... Your arms stick to it.... The only saving grace is the beer garden... and that's so you can pour the dreadful beer into the plant pots

I was living abroad, (Originally from Portland, Maine) getting a degree at Man Met, and was delighted to see this pub was on campus. I was going through an incredibly difficult time in my life (Divorce, Moving overseas, New social circle,) and I popped in to see if a drink would help. The very first thing on tap was "Portland IPA" a beer brewed in my home city back in the states. I was dumbstruck. It tasted amazing, and I got the bangers and mash to go with it. I ate there about twice a week for the next three years. I have tremendously fond memories of this place, and would strongly reccomend it to anyone feeling lost, homesick or alone. Cheers!

The loaded fries are consistently brilliant, good vegan options, nice atmosphere, a place to spend met card bursary money. Always nice to come here after uni and society stuff.

Best damn place in the universe

Used to love going in here, really nice little pub with a good atmosphere. Been recently disappointed by the food recently.. one guest ordered a burger which was pink all the way through.. not cooked properly at all and not worth the money considering you have to pay for chips separately (when they used to come for free). Received some of the loaded fries one day which were delicious and came as a big portion, but ordered another day and they came in a small bowl barely warm and the cheese wasn't melted like it was on the previous occasion. There is no consistency to the quality of food which has put me off buying it in future. Some staff lack customer service skills when ordering at the bar, not a big problem but a smile wouldn't harm. The place itself is welcoming and warm, a fantastic location and a great place for a drink for MMU students.. just a shame that the food isn't up to scratch anymore.
