The Saltgrass in Sunderland

Our function was Sunday afternoon in the beer garden .and great atmosphere with our guests. However, the pub itself was empty. I think this was due to no food been available

'The Salty'..! Always knew it as a shipyards pub with the famous drinking fountain outside. After the shipbuilding closed the area got very quiet. Now under the same management as the Kings arms just up the bank, the Saltgrass is a lovely historic pub. Cool atmosphere and amazing outside space. If you're in town and fancy a drink in a 'non-chain' pub get down the salty and see what Sunlun's really like!

Tastefully refurbished. Great range of beers and friendly staff.

Great atmosphere good ale and great service. Not sure about the food because we didn't have any.

This was Wildfire Pizza at Hanover Place. Pizza Napoli with anchovies was excellent😋. Beer was expensive £5.95 a pint of draught. That was the only let down for me. 🍻😢Still the pizza shone through as it should🔥🍕🍕🍕😋😋😋

Busy noisy cramped. . I paid £14 for 2 tickets for the turn. Never seen him yet. I was pleased to go home and watch the darts and football on the telly . Saltgrass not my cup of tea.

Nice place off the beaten track in Sunderland city centre, friendly staff, outdoor seating,I would have given 5 star's but on my visit there stock of nonalcoholic beers was limited to Guinness, otherwise a very good spot..

Warm, welcoming, good beer, nice crowd, lovely real fire. Simply the best Sunday Lunch in Sunderland. Update 14.05.2023 Popped in for a couple of drinks, quiet, good beer as always and lovely staff. Recommended, great little pub .

Bar staff friendly . Cushions and chairs could do with a clean. Otherwise cosy pub.

Sunday lunch two weeks in a row & it was great

I was recommended to try here by a friend so took the whole family and partners for Sunday lunch and drinks. It was absolutely amazing and staff were so friendly and nothing was to much trouble. Will definitely be going again 😊

Years since I had been in here. Sunday lunch was really good in fact best I've had for a long while. Only issue is service was very slow, which was a shame but staff were nice. Hopefully they address this as we waited over a hour despite booking in advance. Would I go back? Yes I would.

Rang to book a table was told there was no need. Went Monday night to be told they don't do food on a monday.🥴

Gorgeous bar, amazing outdoor area. Great range of drinks and lovely food - what more can you ask for?

Sunday lunch was overpriced also having to pay a supplement for extra gravy or any other meat except the chicken was abit much thought it was expensive paying over £33 for two people fortwo dinners & a drink each

Best ever had...Great staff.. unreal grub....ten out of ten all round...food is 5 star and everyone so welcoming and the tunes are top....your missing out if you haven't been....

Bloody lovely food 😋 trialing the dinner menu before the launch of thier proper menu. We tried the platter (supposed to be for one 😳) not a chance one could eat all that!! Massoof! Chicken was that tender it melts in your mouth 😱 and the burgers is second to none, I'm not even a burger person but they are beautiful- the icing on the cake was a lovely pint of club tropy. Got to add the bar staff was great, lovely lad and the owners are brilliant, had a good laugh. Taking the kids back this week to try those burgers 🙌

Tried one of their sundau dinners today, no booking just showed up. Dinner was served within 20 minutes of being there no complaints about service! Beef dinner and a pork one, both very tasty but small portions of meat. Had to pay extra for cauliflower cheese and only got one little dish of veg to share ( 1 piece of broccoli each) . Yorkshire was dry but the roasties were the best I have ever tasted really nice!! Lush gravy plenty of flavour in veg aswell. No complaints except portion size 7.5/10 They have a nice beer garden and sell clwb tropicana! Used to do 2 printers and have a dj outside not sure if they still do now however. Not a good location as its a taxi to anywhere else.

Came here today with my boyfriend for Sunday lunch! It was amazing, food was 10/10 and so was the service. We will be back! 😊

Great atmosphere, the buskers night on a Friday is amazing. Food and drinks all top notch.

Would of been an exceptional Sunday lunch but timing is way out! Waited ages for cutlery and gravy boats did not arrive till we had finished lunch. Other customers also complaining as not been served an hour and 10 mins after putting food orders in.

Good food and music, and a great pint of guiness

No decent beer, no food, deafening disco so loud we couldn't talk in the other room. And that was lunchtime Saturday.

Great pub over the years if you like a real pub this is it very clean staff very nice look forword to seeing food put back on good bands too

Went to see a Gerry Cinnamon tribute act which was really good but the venue itself was horrendous. Ladies toilets were filthy with no hand washing facilities (not good at anytime but with Covid about this is surely illegal?). Also not enough toilets for the amount of people attending so long queues meant missing a large portion of the entertainment Not enough bar staff so had to wait ages for hugely over priced drinks and trouble and fighting which the doormen clearly couldn’t handle

Truly terrible, seemed like a building site, tickets weren't checked for the gig so people were just walking in off the street. It was outside and freezing cold because the heating and the sound system apparently didn't work together. Looked and felt like a drink at the Slaughtered Lamb, truly an awful experience

100 quid for a cheap bottle of gin Highway robbery. Now I understand why the other bar wasn't open. Group was awesome

Was an absolute nightmare 45 mins wait in a que for a drink 30 min wait in loo was only 2 toilets for women was over crowded and very badly organised was all about making money acoustic odds are fantastic tho but night was spoilt constantly waiting for drinks absolute pants

I enjoy the lovely atmosphere in the building and l have been to the live music events and watching sports on the TV too, l always get a warm welcome from the staff and owner.

We went at lunchtime and when we arrived there was only two other people in. When asked what the house white wine was the waitress didn't know. We were then only given one menu between the three of us. While she was making the drinks, we got two more menus from the bar. When she returned they were snatched from us in case more people arrived even though it wasn't busy. When placing the food order, she couldn't recommend a dish as 'we all have different appetites' and also rudely corrected us on the pronunciation of a dish. The food was nice although on the small side and horrendous service.

Lovely little pub, nice food, nice real ales on offer. Very well priced, will certainly return!

Missing the diving helmet, painted a trendy grey and the jukebox is a miss. But this is still the Salty and one of the best pubs in Sunderland. Go there

Fabulous Sunday lunch. Warm welcome, warm pub, very hot food. It was delicious 2x red pepper soup and hot crusty baguette, 2 x roast beef dinners. Just lovely. Will definitely be back thank you 😀

Expensive drinks...patio area filthy ( chairs & tables etc ) covered in cobwebs , muck & dust...even tho he knew it would be bizzy coz he had a great live band ( sons of eden ) playing later that day...

Went in this pub for the first time last night. Safe to say will not be returning . Not once did the woman serving us look up from her phone. Even though the bar mats were advertising dark fruits cider they did not have any on the pumps When asked of they had cider her reply was no we don't "not even bottles " oh yes we have those. I can honestly say we have never felt so unwelcome in a pub and that it was a chore to actually serve a customer....

Just doing the beer delivery, pub looked great though.
