The Salt Room Restaurant in Brighton and Hove

Wow what a special lunch at The Salt Room. My bream with beetroot side was absolutely delicious. My husband loved his Ribeye steak with fries and gave it 10/10. I chose the Autumn sweets selection for dessert.. well I can honestly say I can’t remember having a more wonderful dessert in my whole life. 5 tiny but exquisite creations ! My husband loved his generous cheese board too. Lovely service . Highly recommended.

The fish at this restaurant is incredible. It was a birthday meal and I felt throughly treated. The decor is modern and welcoming. The mini desserts were out of this world. I will certainly return.

Really friendly, efficient staff, excellent menu choice, great selection of fish - hake and cod dishes well cooked and tasty, choc truffles naughty but nice!.

Food was outstanding. Great service from Antoine. I didn't want chillies in my mussels, so made them without. Tried a ginger Margrhtia, which packed a punch as it slid down.

Good service and lovely restaurant but quite disappointing food. The halibut fillet is not a fillet at all - a halibut steak would have bones but a ‘fillet’ should not have bones through it, and the “roasted cauliflower” is non-existent and apparently is a puree, and when questioned we were told it’s a mistake in how the menu is written……….not really good enough. Previous visits have been great and I praised this place highly but after the recent visit I am afraid the competition is too good to accept anything below standard and a re-visit is unlikely.

Food was really good, had the scallops to start and ribeye for main. Antoine was incredible all night, extremely helpful with the food and wine, and well have just friendly: would recommend.

On the pricier side for us, but as a very special occasion it was perfect!

We had a family meal to celebrate our eldest’s 18th birthday and it was the most brilliant evening. We were warmly welcomed by Greg and then very well looked after by our waiter Callum who made great recommendations and helped make the evening feel special. The food was absolutely delicious and we were very happy. Thank you!

Charged me £40 for cancelling 55 mins beforehand for 2 people. This is theft in my opinion. There is no other restaurant that does this. They didn't even ask me why I couldn't make it!!! Utterly appalling

Due to the good reviews, I made a reservation here for my husband's birthday on the occasion of our trip to England. We were also welcomed very friendly. We were seated at a small table for two with a view of the wall instead of outside. But I didn't want to cause any trouble, so I accepted it. Starter was ok. For the main course, I chose the freshly caught whole fish. As promised, it was filleted. Unfortunately, this took a while, so it was only just lukewarm and was even cold after the first bite. Side dishes were good. However, the service now took a very long time. Sure, the restaurant was well filled and there was a large table. But how often do they pass our table empty-handed? We sat there with empty plates for about 25 minutes. So we lost the desire to order desserts. After a while, a waiter passed by and placed a plate in front of my husband with Happy Birthday on it and a small chocolate, but it was so careless. So all in all: high prices but low performance, what a bitter disappointment! We ate much better during the 14-day tour of southern England, had more beautifully presented food and much better service and paid even less for it.

Had a wonderful evening with our family, delicious food and attentive staff in a relaxing and vibrant atmosphere, I would recommend a visit.

I booked a table here but mistakenly reserved it 2 hours too early. When I dropped in to try and change the booking I found the staff member on the door to be condescending and sarcastic. I appreciate that it was entirely my own fault and there was nothing to be done at such short notice, but it could have been handled more sensitively and left me feeling uncomfortable. We had the surfboard sharing platter and the seafood was of good quality. Some parts were cooked perfectly but the mussels were overcooked and rubbery. The mussels and scallops both came in delicious sauces. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. However I did notice the staff took a bit of a “hard sell” approach when trying to recommend more expensive items. I understand the need to upsell but at times it felt pushy. Overall enjoyed our meal but certain aspects of the service made me feel not entirely welcome in the restaurant.

Vlado the waiter was exceptionally brilliant & literally helped us chose the best items from magnum Chablis to market fish - made it an night with quality food & drinks !!

We were a group of five for dinner. Everyone's food was delicious, the service was top and we had a good time. Prices are above average, but for that you get great-tasting starters and mains. Wine list was reasonable and good.

Love this place and always will, but they have put up their prices significantly!!!! 2 small starters, 1 surfboard for 2 (basically large platter of shellfish to share), 1 child menu (worth £8), 1 bottle of water, 1 soft drink and 1 glass of wine.... £ 145!!! About 6 years ago, the platter was probably about £ 25-30 pp (now 40 pp) and more generous than it is today (as staff has also confirmed). Food quality is great though and service spot on, guess cost of living crisis and inflation have played a part but we were left with quite a hefty bill for what was ordered on a weekend lunch... Still super recommended, nowadays probably more a place where to go for an occasion or evening outing

Went there with my lovely friend Martina. Everyone was so warm and welcoming. The food was cooked to perfection. Everything is made on site with incredible technique and attention to detail. Highly recommend! Incroyable !

We did the London to Brighton cycle ride on 15/09/2024 and wanted to celebrate the aching bodies with a nice fish meal so we chose the Salt Rock, great atmosphere and our waiter Mathew was excellent knew all the food was very friendly with a great sense of humour. Never seen done before but turned the serviette into a handle to pour the wine.Had great night and would highly recommend. Thanks guys for a great night.

We had 2 seabream with side order had bacon on it my guest was vegeterian it was a bad exerience. Too expensive for what it was £190.00.

I was refused service when I asked to sit in the terrace with my dogs for a meal annd enjoy the beautiful sea in a lovely sunny day. I was told there is no service on the terrace (no explanation) and no dogs in the restaurant. Really unpleasant and won’t give a second try ever

We had a truly memorable lunch at The Salt Room, the whole Brill was superb. But the experience was really made by the staff who were exceptional without exception. A huge credit to Franck and the team, we will definitely be back!

We enjoyed a lovely lunch at The Salt Room. The food was excellent and very well presented. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming. We especially enjoyed the seabass ceviche to start and the cod for main. We weren't sat by the window unfortunately, so our sea views were a bit limited, especially as there's a busy main road between the restaurant and the sea.

Based on a recommendation from a local, when I asked for good fish, we ended up here! I'm still satiated from this evening's meal. After reading the menu outside, we decided to take a chance, and I will definitely be back as soon as I can. I was so happy to see Brazilian rum on the drink menu and took a shot in the dark and requested a caipirinha. It was perfection. Cheers to the bartender! We were seated immediately, even with no reservation on Sunday and the organic decor of large leave plants, both potted and hanging, along with natural woven fabric chandeliers situated above tree bark cut out tables, really made me feel cozy. Add to that the relaxing view of Brighton Beach and Pier. Service was top tier, and we did not feel rushed at all. Our waitress informed us of all of the specials, including fileted sea bass, among others. I have a shellfish allergy, and not only was my request to enjoy a fish meal with no shellfish, but it was so delicious! I had the crusted Cod loin, and it was so fresh and light. My guests enjoyed the salmon, carrots, potatoes, and scallop starters and were additionally amazed. We finished with the pistachio macarons. I could have sat there for another hour. I can't wait to come back and feel like a V.I.P. for such a reasonable price. This restaurant is well-managed from the front of the house to the back. The Salt Room is now in my favorites.

The food was very good in this place. Fish was delicious and the service was very good When i got the bill there was a 1£ donation added for “love food give food” charity I do not have a problem of giving a donation but at least i want a explanation or a choice. Went to the manager and he said there was a problem With the till????? Realy you the manager and the till adds 1£ donation to every bill and your explanation is this.

Wonderful anniversary meal at The Salt Room this weekend. Excellent food (as always), exemplary service and a warm welcome all combining to make it a truly special evening. Our favourite restaurant in Brighton, and for good reason!

There was nothing to fault about the whole experience! Every item perfectly cooked, an excellent bottle or two of Chenin Blanc, fantastic service. We she’ll definitely be back. If you are having one meal in Brighton I’d strongly recommend Salt Room.

Visited with family including a couple of kids. The terrace looked inviting but we were advised it was all reserved despite it being empty and there still being free tables when we left which was disappointing, perhaps we were not cool enough. In fairness we hadn't booked but find the more welcoming places offer a table with a stated time for it to be returned. Mixed feelings on the food, seafood was lovely (prawns and scallops being a highlight) but the steak was not seasoned enough for our liking which at the price point felt underwhelming. The kids meals were usual fare but the portions are on the smaller side to other restaurants we have frequented however relatively cheap in comparison to the mains so while it wasnt anything special no complaints there. Service was good, most staff were polite and friendly, others less so. On arrival the person at the door was too busy pressing buttons on a screen to acknowledge us (a simple "hello, will be with you in a momemt" would have been more welcoming) but another member of staff was quick to assist. Main servers were personable and great but then there would be someone who just dumps ice on the table without a word and walks off (again a simple "is there anything else I could help with?" Would have been appreciated if only to acknowledge we were there). In the end it was a mixed experience but do think the surfboard is worth a try. However personally I didn't find the food compelling enough to try again when there are so many other options.

My go to location when in Brighton, food & service are amazing. Great for one off celebrations or every day treats.

You were brilliant - the food amazing, the service stunning and anyone that gets Callum looking after them is very fortunate- he’s attentive professional, informative and thoughtful. We were supposed to have the family event at Soho House but cancelled there because of various reasons and came here instead - it was a great decision. It worked out well. And we I’ll most definitely be back. Thanks for a great party.

The food here was immaculate, and the attention to detail to the food was excellent. The staff explained everything on the menu to the very detail so you knew what you were eating. Excellent lunch.

A perfect night, the soup was great, the oysters delicious, and the grilled lemon sole was great with one side of crispy potatoes to share - a tip from the waiter that turned out to be exactly right. Our Prosecco & chilled carafe of Portuguese white wine accompanied them perfectly. Two things that needed refining - the sole could have used a lemon wedge, just to bring out the delicate sole, which was almost perfectly balanced with the salty samphire and creamy sauce. The description of it coming with ‘potted shrimp’ was misleading - and the explanation for this wasn’t really coherent. The second element was that the Whiskey Baba(top centre of the photo) was underwhelming - nice enough flavour but not really elegant or refined enough for the price we paid. Lovely spot, and the staff were on top of things even as it got busy - the wait between starter and main was a little longer than we expected, but we were fine - and we really didn’t expect the celebratory truffles - a lovely touch and a nice memory for us.

The best sea food in the UK we've ever had! The service was exceptional - we wish we took a name of the person who was waiting on us but he was super nice, explained everything very clearly and definitely positively impacted our visit in the restaurant. The ambience was perfect as well - we can't recommend it highly enough :)

Amazing food, we had the Seabass Ceviche for shared starter and then two Surfboard platters, followed by Apple Parfait and Macarons. Really delicious food and it was the perfect amount. Wine and cocktails were perfect and there was a good choice of mocktails with thoughtful flavours. Service was excellent, very friendly and chilled atmosphere and beautiful decor with excellent view of the seafront.

We went for my mum's birthday and the staff were fantastic, so much fun, the food was delicious and it was a really special experience.

The French host at the door was super friendly and lovely - including bar recommendations! Our waiter wasn’t quite as friendly, however. We weren’t too hungry so we just ordered the tomato salad, which was just two small tomatoes chopped up with burrata for £12.50. Coming from London, this is extremely overpriced! Lovely vibe and cocktails though.

Our expectations were high when we booked this restaurant, and from the moment we entered these expectations were exceeded. We were a family of 4 (kids 11 and 13) and were made very welcome from from the start. Service continued to be excellent and the food exquisite.

One of the best meals out we have had in years.Travelling a lot we eat out a lot and this is up there in the top five for sure. Excellent service, one of the best Kir’s I have had outside of the Loire, possibly the best squid I have ever had, perfectly cooked fish, and desserts that are just amazing. I tried to find a fault and I just couldn’t (other than maybe the table could have been bigger). DONT CHANGE A THING - THIS PLACE IS AWESOME!

Had a great time here. From first entering, the staff were lovely, which continued throughout the evening. Starters (ceviche, scallops, squid) were excellent, and we went for the big shellfish platter for 3, which was large: lobster, squid, scallops, prawns, prevented, a pot of mussels, potatoes and fries. It was all delicious.

A wide selection of sea food located near the beach with a lovely view. The outside seating in the summer and excellent service. It isn’t cheap however compared to London it’s not bad at all.

Absolutely amazing experience at the Salt Room. The interior was very smart and had a good ambience, and the service was attentive and helpful without being overbearing. I couldn't choose between the seafood platter and the whole lobster, and they suggested I get half the platter with the lobster as well which was the perfect amount. They recommended a great bottle of white wine which paired well, and it was the best seafood I have had in UK.

Antoine was excellent, cracking jokes and keeping us supplied with wine and excellent food all night he was absolutely brilliant and deserves all the praise he gets. A truly beautiful experience for me and my girlfriends one year anniversary.

We were visiting Brighton on vacation and were looking for a nice restaurant to help celebrate my birthday dinner. The Salt Rooms' ambiance and styling were perfect. The service was excellent, the food was delicious, great location and our waiter (a French gentleman) provided superior service. He was patient and very informative about the options offered on the menu as well as the specials. I believe his name was Franck. Kudos to Franck for making our dining experience such a wonderful event.

We held our wedding reception for 60 people there on a sunny Saturday afternoon. I run out of superlatives. The food was stunning (as it always is there), the staff are cheerful, competent and empathetic and could not do enough to make our day special. The whole process of booking the restuarant, choosing the food, tasting the wines was smooth and stress-free (particularly tasting the wines!). I can't thank them enough

We did not have excessive expectations when we visited Saltroom. However, I must admit that we were exceedingly satisfied with the cuisine and service. We were deliberating between two fish of the day. The staff were so amiable that they brought the raw fish to assist us in making a decision. Therefore, when they refer to the catch of the day, they are serious. Additionally, the fish was prepared to precision. Despite being well-baked or roasted, the interior remains juicy and the full flavor is preserved. It is simply delightful. In the end, it would be an injustice if I did not address the hospitality. The personnel were exceedingly accommodating and compassionate. We experience an extraordinary evening. We will certainly return to Saltroom. Thank you.

What started as a long-awaited birthday meal celebration quickly took a turn for the worse. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a rather noisy and rowdy birthday celebration already in full swing. Although the waiter quickly ushered us to a slightly quieter spot, alas, this didn't quite cut the mustard. The noise emanating from the main area of the restaurant was overbearing and somewhat barbaric. Prior to our reservation, we had requested a specific bottle of Beaujolais to be chilled for our arrival. Unfortunately, when presented with the bottle, it was not the wine we had requested. The wine that had been chilled was of slightly lower quality and price, but since the bottle was already opened, we decided to soldier on. We ordered our starters along with the butcher's choice porterhouse steak (for two). We were specific in telling our waiter that medium-rare was our preferred doneness. The starters came and went, but there was nothing particularly memorable about them. Our porterhouse steak then arrived. At first glance, it looked great, but as we took a few pre-sliced pieces, we quickly realised that our steak was more well-done to slightly overdone. There was minimal pinkness, the beef was rather dry, and it lacked seasoning. Now, for £135, I would have expected more. When presented with the bill, we noticed that we had also been charged for two espressos that we hadn't ordered. Although the waiter was quick to rectify this, little was said when he returned from the kitchen after enquiring why our steak wasn't cooked to our specifications. They did, however, offer to remove the cost of our starters, which somewhat appeased the situation. But all in all, to be charged £135 for an overcooked steak is outrageous. Unfortunately, this has soured our experience of The Salt Room (there was more salt in the room than on the steak), and we won't be returning. I would recommend that anyone who knows about steak avoid dining here. Their main focus seems to be on seafood, which is understandable given the location, but if you can't get a steak right, don't put it on the menu!

Overall the experience was fine. The food was tasteful, the service was generally good. The atmosphere was somewhat uncomfortable. The entrance to the terrace seating is awkward and you're going through and interrupting people whilst they eat at their tables to go in and out, but then when that happens, you're asked to take the other route from outside the restaurant and go around to the terrace. The front reception could do with some customer service training. The person on the floor (not sure if manager) was somewhat patronising to say the least. Our table service was great by a lovely gentleman who really looked after us. The food is good and presented well, but pricey and the flavours are just above average (including the espresso affogato!) but it's not memorable unfortunately, overall the experience was pleasant. It's worth a visit - just not sure I'd visit again.

Jake and I would like to say a massive thank you to Oliver and all of the his team at The Salt Room for making our special day so memorable. We truly had the best day and felt very looked after. The welcome drinks on the terrace was a perfect addition and the food was absolutely delicious!!! (We have had many compliments from our guests so thank you to all the kitchen staff for their cooking and presentation.) We would finally like to give a special thank you to events manager Mimi McGill who guided us through the whole process and made us feel calm and prepared for the day. X If anyone is looking for a reception venue with lush food, a wide selection of drinks, gorgeous seaviews with warm and helpful staff, then we highly recommend The Salt Room. You will not be disappointed.

This place was recommended by one of locals as a good place for a seafood restaurant. We went to check. The place is not dog friendly, please keep your puppies at home. We asked if we could stay in the terrace with the doggies (miniature Yorkie, which you can literally put into a handbag) and been told that terrace is closed. Through all conversation the waiter who "welcomed" was very smug, it felt like they were happy that can refuse the service to us... Not a pleasant experience. That's my experience with this place unfortunately...

Everything was great, the brill was, well, brill and the service was friendly and helpful, although it dropped off at the end of the meal. Someone was attempting some DIY with a drill and this seemed to be a source of endless fascination to the other waiters, who then stopped paying much attention to our table.

Absolutely stunning meal at this restaurant for lunch. The food was impeccable… so well thought through and executed. The scallop starter was among the best dishes I’ve ever eaten. Staff were so professional and knowledgeable. Beautiful sea view!

We decided to visit the Salt Room for our anniversary and had a lovely time. The staff were welcoming and attentive and the restaurant itself has a relaxed feeling making you comfortable, from couples, larger parties or families with children without being over crowded. The menu has a large selection of food and drink to choose from and it all arrived at the table in a timely but not rushed manner (you get a two hour window for the meal) everything we ordered was delicious and when we made a small comment about one of the items the restaurant went above a beyond to resolve the issue, despite our protestation that it wasn't a complaint but just a comment. We will certainly be returning and taking our family with us next time. Thank You.

We were particularly well received by the staff and pleasantly surprised by Grégory's humor and kindness. He recommended a fish to share, which was excellent! In this restaurant, fish is the specialty (this one is freshly caught) and this was clearly evident when our dishes arrived. Divine! The service is fast, the room is charming. I recommend this address to anyone who loves marine taste adventures!

Been to this restaurant three or four times. Food has always been average. This time only sent because Cyan Restaurant was full. I asked the front desk for a table for 2, I was told to wait at the bar for my table to be set. I waited patiently for 5 minutes. Then an English couple and to ask for a table for two. Like me they had no booking. However they were taken straight to their table on the terrace. The same happened to the next couple. I asked why my table is not ready but the two couples behind me got their tables straight away. The manager simply said it is private property, he can do what he want he does not like my attitude. I find this clear racial prejudice! Stay away from this awful place!

This place is top quality from the food to service. The waiters where amazing making my graduation day feel so special. The food was delicious and very fresh. Will definitely recommend if you are look for a great dining experience

It's hands down the best spot for seafood in town, and I highly recommend it to anyone who shares my love for all things from the sea. The restaurant's location by the seafront creates an atmosphere that is both charming and welcoming, adding to the overall experience. We chose Salt to celebrate my friend's graduation, and it was nothing short of spectacular. The food was simply amazing, making the occasion even more memorable. If you're looking for a place that delivers exceptional seafood in a delightful setting, Salt is the place to be.

Visited there a few days ago. The location and the restaurant itself are lovely (except for the extremely fishy smell as soon as you enter). Food and drink had reasonable prices. There was only one annoying thing: for a table of 4, we had 3-4 different waiters coming and going! The most annoying, in my opinion, was when one of the waiters was taking our orders and left our table mid-way! And came back in a few minutes. Even though it was short, it was still annoying. Also, we kept having 2 waiters talking to each other at our table while 4 of us were having our conversation. For the lobster dish, I would prefer garlic butter sauce instead of regular mayonnaise.

Amazing dinner with my family, food perfectly cooked and Matt made our night very special. Definitely best seafood restaurant in Brighton.

I didn't rate this as much as everyone said. It was OK. It was clearly a very good restaurant once upon a time. The oysters were good, the scallops were over cooked. The meat was well done when we asked for rare. Service was great but the food lacked and not worth the hype.

Had my 70th Birthday meal loved it tad expensive

To be honest I’d probably give it 3.5. We decided to give it a whirl after reading the reviews online. Snagged an early booking and the service started off pretty good but it didn’t stay at that level. We ordered all the starters on the menu and had some chocolate truffles to end. The food was alright, but nothing special. Having to ask for the bill 4 times (to the same waiter) within a half hour period was jarring. Especially when I was told he was waiting for my partner to come back to pay the bill…..my partner had left and gone to work (due to the time the bill took to come) and I was going to pay. Unsure why it was so surprising for a woman to be paying the bill in this day and age to be honest… Personally we wouldn’t come back but I guess if you want to sit on the terrace and watch the hoarders of stag and hen parties heading on their night out then go for it - there is a nice wine selection.

As seafood restaurants go, this is right up there. The service was friendly and efficient and the food that I had was all very good. Unfortunately had to knock off a star as they were missing a lot of dishes, including the two that I actually wanted. Maybe we visited a bit late on a busy day, but it was still quite disappointing. Will definitely come back though.

This was my first visit to Brighton, and being by the seaside, I had to try some seafood. This place is conveniently located right across the beach. I made a reservation for lunch, and wow, it did not disappoint. I tried the seafood platter called "Surf Board," which was excellent and very fulfilling. The clams, seemingly cooked in wine with a garlicky, buttery taste, were a highlight. The starters were fantastic as well—the fish bites and roe were both great. It's a wonderful place with a nice ambience and excellent food. What more could you ask for?

Expensive but worth it. Went to celebrate my wife's birthday. As a special occasion it was just right. Menu concentrates on seafood and fish. Everything we tried was fresh and delicious. Shared starter of salt and pepper squid. Sea bream and mixed seafood platter (surf board) for mains. Chocolate truffles, macarons and great coffee to finish. Advice on wine was perfect. I have to give a special mention to the service. It was friendly, understated, great attention to detail. It made for a great experience for an indulgent lunch.

We had the Seafood Platter to share…. It was cooked to perfection & Callum was lovely & engaging 10/10
