I wanted to like this place so much but the quality of the food was very low. The menu had ambitions beyond the apparent ability of the kitchen.

We have enjoyed going to The Russett for several years, pre and post baby. The staff used to be attentive and friendly and served good quality food and coffee. There has clearly been a change in management/staff in the last months and oh my, what a difference! The Russett has now turned in to the usual, below avarrage, snooty and rude dalston experience, that has become really old. The food lacks inspiration and is very slow. What once used to be the pearl of stoke newington has now turned in to a real disappointment!

The staff have always been off hand, snotty and incompetent. The food is average, the service slow and the drinks are overpriced. Having gone in once again, two members of staff rudely shoved past us before we had made it to the counter and so we left without ordering. There are places nearby that serve better food without the ridiculous prices with staff that don't treat you like they wish you weren't there.

The initial impression was relatively good, shabby chic style and charming. After ordering two separate cheese boards with my friend amounting to £7.50 per person; what arrived after a very long wait was a small portion to share between the pair of us.When asked if this was for both of us, we were told 'yes I think so, they give a little more then a single portion'. The cheese itself was very basic, nothing special and we could have bought double the amount in Tesco- that was the standard quality, however they were charging as though it was artisan style French imported Cheese- It was not. The Service was poor, slow and a little off hand, the place is over priced and basically trying to sell itself as something its not. I would not recommend and I would not be returning!

After having watached a fanatastic production of babylon my friend and I went into The Russet for some cheese and biscuits and a 3 chocolate delight (or a similar title!) It was not busy and we waited over 20 minutes for food. When the cheese board came out (not cooked and no apology for the delay) I thought it was for one and was really shocked to be informed it was for two people. No real mixture of cheeses I was promised Cashel Blue - nothing even similar X 3 plus the smallest two bits of brie imaginable. The fact that we had jointly paid £15 for 8 small slices of cheese, 6 single raspberries and 6 non adventurous crackers was scandelous. I then had dolls house/taster size 'cup' (if you can refer to it as that) of hot chocolate. For us it spolit a good night out given that the production was great and I really think there needs to be realsitic pricing and less of an 'up your own backside' approach if you want people to return - Thoroughly disappointed :(

Went for the first time for a meal to celebrate a birthday. We arrived at 7.30pm to find one of the main meals was not available, which was the vegetarian option. It was also gnocchi, so not exactly hard to find in local shops or in Tesco down the road; considering it was a Wednesday evening and expecting a large party of people this was disappointing to say the least. They also nearly ran out of the pork belly (which actually arrived cold) whilst we were there, again, not a great sign when two of the three main meals are potentially off the menu. There were few waiting staff not really paying any attention to the tables, we had to go and find someone - no drinks were offered, just asked if we wanted to order our food. The meal itself was very rushed, we had just finished our starters when we were pushed to have our main. One person ordered two starters to have as a main and the portions were tiny; even smaller than those that arrived as a starter.Location was fine, if a bit too Hipster - a concrete loading bay isn't a village green! There was also loud music, which made talking difficult. The actual cafe was nicely laid out and finished, though the toilets need a lot of work. All in all, a bad experience. It felt like there was no care or attention given and the food was so-so. It would make a nice bar, but to sit down and eat I wouldn't bother again. It's not difficult to cater for an expected number of people either, and they really fell short with the menu offered.

On the rare occasion that food arrives it is actually ok but these guys are capitalising on people like me and our repeated stupidity on returning to a place that is not actually fit for purpose. The coffee is a rip off, pastries the same and the prices of food and drink as well as the general off handed manner of staff just leaves you feeling disgruntled and taken advantage if

I'd rather walk an extra 5-10 minutes out towards the high street than go back there. They're cashing in on the fact that really there is nothing else around that area. I really wanted the Russet to be a good experience as I live so close by and it appears to be such a great use of the space. However the service is so appallingly bad that not only will I not return, I even strongly considered just getting up and leaving while I was there. We turned up around 11:45am on a Sunday and asked for a table for two. There was the choice of 3 or 4 tables, so we chose one, sat down, decided what we wanted and put our order in. The order was a couple of coffees and some food from the brunch menu. It took a scarcely believable 40 minutes for the coffees to turn up. It was just over an hour for the food. Given that not every table was full when we turned up I am still bewildered about how the service was so slow. Looking around at the other tables it appeared as though other diners were becoming similarly frustrated at the poor service. Some other minor quibbles I have is that they had no bacon left (which was annoying since so many of the brunch menu options rely on it) and the mushrooms for my order turned up late on a side plate.

I had a wonderful egg royal dish, whilst others enjoyed "Greasy Pippin" which wasn't greasy but a lovely full English breakfast! The coffee and ginger beer were good too. I thought the prices very reasonable for London, we've certainly paid more for inferior food, so this little quirky cafe is certainly worth tracking down. We ate outside but it has a rather interesting and unusual interior. I thought there were a lot of locals there, which is always a good sign!

It took several weeks to summon up the courage to try out The Russet, because it is in Hackney and fun little ventures in Hackney tend to be visited by people who are painfully cool. And it's true, the clientele on a weekday lunchtime is trendy. Uber trendy. There's the novelist working in the corner... there's a student revising whilst eating chorizo stew... there's a breastfeeding mum who literally doesn't seem to have a care in the world... there's a guy reading a book drinking Dalston Cola. He's wearing sunglasses. Is he famous? And so on, and so forth. But I found out that The Russet is a refreshingly down-to-earth place. So many cafes/restaurants in London are overwhelmingly pretentious, so it's delightful to work out whether you have to order at the bar or whether a waitress will come over (we waited 20 mins for the latter and then sheepishly headed over). And the tables are all made from what appear to be old warehouse pallets or the like. The wheels are still attached to my dining partner's evident joy (he has a short attention span). I've now been several times. They used to be unlicensed and you could BYO wine for £3 and beer for £1 which seems to have gone now that they sell booze. That's a real shame and they should consider bringing the BYO back, but the London Fields ale on tap is a good enough replacement. They also sell homemade ginger beer and Dalston Cola which are wickedly delicious and worth every penny. The breakfast menu doesn't seem to change and is always reliable. 'Eggs of the garden' were particularly excellent. The lunch is impressive, too. My friend always goes for the 'no frills' dining option (usually the chorizo stew) which is outrageously tasty and decent value as well. I think the prices have gone up quite sharply since Autumn 2012 but I may be mistaken. Anyway, you can still be impressively fed and watered for a tenner which isn't bad going I suppose. I've only had dinner here once and it was empty apart from us. The food was decent but the whole experience lacked the carefree atmosphere of lunchtime. It's an impressive place; we just have to hope that they keep the prices down and the standards high!
