Visited on a Monday evening for dinner. The staff were absolutely fantastic and welcoming. The steak pie was excellent and there was plenty of it. Sadly though we were put into a separate, dark and soulless room because we had our dog with us - this spoiled the whole evening. No other pubs we visited in the area made us go into a ‘dog’ room - disappointed!

This was our second stay and compared with the first was disappointing. The location of the pub is lovely and the rooms comfortable in a traditional style. There is minimal road noise in the mornings, only agricultural traffic. When we visited previously there was an issue with flies in the bar and restaurant, our only negative. This time they were far worse. You were left swatting them away from food and checking drinks before drinking. Speaking with staff they admitted the flies were a constant problem. On this basis alone we would not visit again. It is a shame the owners do not address the problem but they seem not to be operationally involved and not live locally. Our other issue was the menu. It was very varied during our last visit. It is now still varied but most meals are meat heavy with unimaginative vegetables, very simple fare.

Stayed overnight and ate in the restaurant. Loved it. Delicious food, excellent service. Comfy bed, plenty of hot water. My only gripe is that the walls are thin. We might as well have been in the same room as the people next door, inc hearing them in the bathroom. Did ask if we could move but the only room had a small double and that didn't work for us, so we decided to stick with it. And the people next door must have realised they could hear us so we could hear them and piped down. Highly recommend. Make sure to book if you want dinner, it was busy!

We were on holiday just a few minutes away from the Royal Oak . We took a stroll along the road for a Sunday lunch time drink arriving maybe one or two minutes after two . They stop serving lunch at two . At the bar I said I realise you have stopped serving lunch but is there any chance of a round of sandwiches . We don’t do sandwiches on a Sunday was the reply only bags of crisps. Not exactly welcoming hospitality! They weren’t exactly busy with a number of staff on hand . We saw one table being served with their main course some twenty minutes after two . So all in all they missed out on a sale of at two Sunday lunches plus drinks or a couple of rounds of sandwiches at around £9 a round all because they couldn’t be bothered to put in a little extra effort. No wonder pubs are going out of business

We wanted to eat here on our first night staying in Gillamoor. In advance of the trip we emailed the pub to try and book a table. We got no response. We then phoned up the week before we arrived and were told that they do not take reservations. When we arrived we visited the pub and were told that they were fully booked?? We were stuck in the village with nowhere else to eat. Staff were rude and unaccommodating, despite the fact that the pub was quiet when we visited. We tried to even just get a drink but were told that even that isn’t possible without a ‘booking’. Maybe they just don’t welcome tourists and you have to know the right person to get a booking!

We have just returned from a fantastic weekend with friends staying at the Royal Oak and can’t recommend it enough. The rooms whilst relatively simple are comfortable and clean. The staff are all incredibly friendly and can’t do enough to make you comfortable. The best part of our stay has to be the food. We tried everything from the grouse and duck to the lamb and the incredibly rich steak and ale pie. The breakfasts were quite literally fit for a king and leave you full until dinner. The Royal Oak really does deliver in the midst of the present epidemic and does it without detracting from delivering an excellent experience.

I am loathed to leave bad reviews of places during these hard times but we left disappointed. Knowing this was the only pub near where we were staying and the menu also looked stunning we rang and booked the night before, we asked for 6.30 but were asked to arrive at 6pm. No problem, or so we thought...We arrived a couple of minutes late and were shown to our table with the "early bird menu". I love a bargain so couldn't believe my luck but my heart sank when I saw the menu. All of the fine food they offered online was not in the deal. It was instead, generally, cheap food sold at cheap prices (scampi and chips etc.).No problem, we will just order from the main menu and have the food we wanted. Right? No! We were told as our table was at 6pm we could only order from the cheap (inferior) menu and you needed a table at 6.30 for that. OK, can we wait 15 minutes to order then? NO! We needed to order now, from that menu as they needed the tables. So we ordered and it was every bit as disappointing as I expected; probably worse. Scampi and chips without a hint of anything green. No spoon of peas or salad garnish. Bland, fried food served with little love or joy. What made this so perplexing is that we were not asking for the main menu at cheaper prices. They had a steak for £24 that I would have gladly ordered but instead I had to suffer two course (that is unfair, the black pudding starter was lovely) at half the cost. I wanted to spend more money! So, if you're booking a table make sure you do not get stuck in the deal menu trap. You'll be disappointed.

We visited the Royal Oak Inn last Sunday for a family lunch. We knew there was a separate room just inside the entrance that was perfect for the 10 of us. We wanted Sunday lunch and were not disappointed, good choice of starters, beef, pork, lamb or chicken for mains. Great Yorkshire puds and roast spuds. Thought the veg was a bit sparse, only 2 plates between 6 adults and 4 kids. (We saw an elderly couple on their own in the bar earlier get a whole plate of veg between 2 that they barely touched!). One small portion of braised red cabbage that was quickly eaten, we asked for more but it had run out. Wonderful puds!. Children were well looked after. Delicious Black Sheep beer!!! All in all very enjoyable. Reasonable value for money. Will happily return.

We booked a weekend some time due to its proximity to both York, the coast and other attractions. It is well situated. We had evening meal which was of good quality and excellent value. Our room was very attractive with a fairly comfortable, very large bed. The ensuite bathroom was extremely spacious and was equipped with toiletries. The only downside was that the radiator in or bedroom couldn't be turned off as the valve was faulty - it made our room unbearably hot, so we had to open the window to cool things down. The restaurant is good and in some ways this detracts from it's charm in that there is really no where to sit if you are not eating as the tables are populated with diners. So on the Saturday night we had to sit in our room as there was no comfortable seats for drinkers. Not a complaint but more of a disappointment. If you do visit, do walk towards the charming little church and proceed to the left and soak in one of the best views in Yorkshire. All in all we enjoyed our stay, it was comfortable, if not a tad hot, with the food being excellent with a lovely breakfast.

Unsure where to start really! We stopped in a holiday cottage about a three minute walk from The Royal Oak (what’s not to like already?!) so we decided to have Sunday lunch there as a treat (we don’t often have a Sunday lunch but prefer to cook our own roast dinners just to be on the safe side, if you follow me - better the devil you know!) Well, what can I say? This was a truly beautiful meal, although enormous portions so please ensure you’re very hungry or wear your baggy clothes so you have room to expand!! My husband and I both chose a good old fashioned prawn cocktail to start with - it was massive, so many prawns, and very very tasty indeed. After having devoured that (leaving a couple of lettuce leaves - that was just pushing it a tad too far knowing what was coming next!) My husband chose the roast beef with all the trimmings whilst I opted for the turkey and stuffing (well it was only a couple of weeks until Christmas after all). Completely and utterly stuffed! We couldn’t manage all of the veg, there was stacks of meat and lashings of gravy (all washed down with a ginger beer - oh sorry I was slipping into Famous Five mode there, haha!) Anyway to cut a long story short, it was absolutely fabulous and if you’re in the area definitely make a point of visiting, it’s well worthwhile if you enjoy quality food at a very reasonable price! A truly hidden gem

We booked a table for two for 6:30 on a freezing night, and once seated we opted to go with the mains and a desert option for £15.95.I chose the lamb, which arrived very quickly; it came with mash and a separate jug of mint gravy and a dish of vegetables- new potatoes, carrots, leeks, and a little odd perhaps, lightly pickled red cabbage. The veg dish was for sharing between my meal and my partner's.The food was absolutely gorgeous-the lamb was beautifully cooked, and the veg very nicely done too; there was plenty of everything between the two of us. The mint gravy was lovely and my partner spoke very highly of her meal too.The salted caramel waffle with peanut butter ice cream was heavenly, as apparently was the roulade! All in all it was a lovely meal at fair prices; we would definitely go back again.

Booked a Saturday night as we were in the area.Staff were helpful and welcoming, room was clean, tidy and warm as it was very cold out.We were out for the evening but came back to a friendly atmosphere and after a good nights sleep, an excellent breakfast.Would happily stay again.

Whilst staying in the area we went to this pub for dinner & it was a great find.Character pub with a welcoming atmosphere & friendly staff, it has a set menu available both at lunch & dinner with excellent local produce. We thoroughly enjoyed the crayfish starter & grouse main course, but the daleside lamb & pheasant dishes looked equally appealing. Great value & well worth a visit.

We are staying in the area and called in here today for lunch. We were made to feel very welcome and we both selected the lunchtime 2 course special. My starter (pâté) was very generous and would normally have been a main course for me at home. My husband had the soup, which was also enjoyable. We then both had the pork tenderloin in a blue stilton and white wine cream sauce, which was fantastic (thank you to the chef). The staff were very attentive and helpful, and we definitely recommend it.

This lunch exceeded expectations. We had not eaten here for years, but decided we wanted a change from our usual lunch time haunts and were glad we did.

Lovely, friendly pub serving a great array of tasty food. Obviously popular with locals and visitors alike, so booking in advance may save disappointment.

Lovely simple pub food. Large portions and very flexible staff letting adults order from the kids menu for smaller portions.

As the title says the staff were very friendly and the pub is in a lovely location but the food was disappointing. The melon for starter was clearly very over ripe, unappealing on the eye and still on the skin. The “pan fried chicken escalopes” was delivered as a whole chicken breast. My wife is intolerant to black pepper and was advised that unfortunately all the sauces contained black pepper. Any self respecting chef would have offered and been able to knock up a simple sauce without pepper. No offer was made. I suspect he / she couldn’t be bothered. Nevertheless we had a pleasant evening but it was a shame about the food.

We booked as we were staying at a B and B along the road. Genuinely surprised at the quality of the menu and volume of food. Yes, the scallops were amazing buy so was the chicken pie and the desserts. Don't bank on being able to manage both! Worth a drive to, in the food alone.

We were staying in the village for a week and visited the bar for food and drinks Can’t complain about anything The staff were friendly and we could even take the dog in. Price wise it’s about what you pay anywhere else so decent value.

We decided to have 4 days break in an area that we had not tried before. What a find this place was in a small quiet village on the edge of the mores. The room was a good size and very clean, parking was good at the rear of the pub and they had good secure storage for our bikes. All the staff were excellent and the food was very good and plentiful. Would we go back, I hope so.

After a visit to see the Farndale daffodils we stopped off for lunch in this delightful village pub. We opted for the 2 course lunch special,a bargain at £12.50. We shared a king prawn starter and jam roll poly sweet and chose pork medallions and pheasant breast. What a feast, both choices were excellent arriving with a dish of vegetables and a jug of creamy sauce each.Excellent service in this charming dog friendly pub we will certainly be back!

A proper country pub! Low beams and open fires, staff who made us very welcome in the "twixmas" lull before the mad New Year rush. Excellent food cooked to order, with reasonably priced drinks. A warm and spacious bedroom (with some conversational noise from the bar below) All in all, one of the best places we have spent anniversaries! NB the car park holds only about 6 cars, but there is ample space on the road outside, which is very quiet.

It would look like I’m beating a drum for this pub! But we keep going back because to be honest it is just such good value. Tried their two steaks for £20, choice of rump, sirloin or ribeye, we both went for sirloin, superb, cooked as we wanted, medium rare, salad, mushrooms, peas, onion rings, and a separate bowl of chips. You must try it! I also think you will find it harder to get a better pint of bitter, landlady told me lines are cleaned at the change of every barrel as well as normal cleaning.

"you enter as a stranger and leave as a friend" said the bar room sign which greeted this weary wanderer who'd taken a wrong turn. I ordered a pint and sure enough before it was pulled I was in conversation with a local man who thenintroduced me to the bar staff! The Sunday Roast was in full swing, the campers were in and out from the pub campsite and the occasional labrador was stealing hearts but nothing seemed to much trouble for the staff. This is a proper country pub, as warm and cosy as a storybook cottage and it's charm appeared to be working on a nearby American couple who's fantasies of an Olde English Country Pub had all just come true. I was on foot and was a few miles from the nearest town but lo and behold one of my new-found companions insisted on giving me a lift... As I exited the bar I glanced the "enter as a stranger and leave as a friend" sign again - this pub does what it says on the tin!

Absolutely loved this pub/restaurant. We sat outside with our dog at one of numerous tables and had a delicious Sunday lunch. So much flavour in the meat and the roast potatoes were the best. A bit pricey but worth it for the setting, the food, the service and the landlord brought out some steak pieces for the dogs to share. Amazing.
