An absolute brilliant pub with a warm welcome to locals and visitors alike. An excellent range of drinks and a well kept cellar to boot. The food is nicely presented and perfectly cooked by well known Chef Jai. Well worth a visit.

Absolutely shocking food!! After booking for six people to turn up and told they are not taking bookings. After we explained that we’d rang and booked to be sat at a table and rather squashed in to a small space. We ordered out for to send two meals back as the steak was red and not medium to well done. Our friends sons meal arrived after two of us had finished and half the gammon was pure gristle and fatty. Ordered adult meal for his and it was tiny. When we complained we’d been told as they had booked out for a private party the chef wasn’t prepared to cook meals. The sad thing is if they’d said I’m sorry we can’t cater for you we’d have left and gone elsewhere. The food was an absolute let down from start to finish. For the price they charge and the quality of food it’s very disappointing. I will say they did however offer to reimburse the whole table which we said to refund the two meals sent back and the little boys meal. This has to be the first time ever we’ve gone home and cooked food as we’d been left hungry. The other family with us went to Mac Donald’s for the little boy.

We visited this pub on Saturday evening having booked a table for 4 people. We ordered our food at the bar as required. Only 2 wanted starters and my husbands arrived, however our friend had to change his order 3 times due to unavailability. My husbands main course arrived before our friends starter! My husband ordered the curry which was completely tasteless and very unattractive on the plate! Our friends main meals still had not arrived and we had to go to the bar to prompt them! A band set up in the bar and the volume of the music was so loud we could not make any conversation it was completely deafening! A very disappointing evening.

As we live locally we decided to go for a meal for our 22yr old granddaughters birthday. What a mistake! the service and food were awful. The very young lady who brought our first course was obviously untrained to serve and spilt the sweet & sour sauce on our grandsons new grey trousers she then brought some napkins to mop it up and I asked for a wet cloth for his trousers so that it would not stain and he had to sit all evening with wet trouser legs. The second course arrived before we had finished the first course and the young lady did not clear the fist course plates away all evening they just sat on our table. The fish and chip were awful half the fish had uncooked batter on the inside and our granddaughters meal was the same. All our chips were overcooked and hard and some were burnt. Before we had finished our meal the young lady brought over a bill which she just put on the table and said it was the tab for what we had so far. She then took away 2 of our plates but left the others while she went to serve someone else. Non of the staff were very friendly and did not make us feel welcome. We were very upset as it was supposed to be a nice birthday but instead it was a disaster. Needless to say we would never go there again or recommend it. The trousers did stain and he was very upset.

Visited for a meal with friends after recently moving to the area. The first winning point was they allowed our four-legged friend to accompany us. We had two of the burgers and the steak. One of us had wanted the beef brisket but unfortunately it was sold out. This is the only negative part of the experience as we were allowed to order at the till and then retrospectively told it had run out. Nevertheless, our food was really good- good portions and came in good time. The atmosphere and surroundings were also nice with the only room for improvement that the table we chose to sit at had salt spilled across it. Service good and efficient though and we shall be back again.

We have eaten here a few times recently and it has been much improved. The atmosphere is good and we can’t fault the food.We enjoy having the steak deal on a Saturday night- 2 meals and a bottle of wine for £25. They are very accommodating and change my steak to Hunter’s chicken. The meal is delicious- one of the best Hunter’s chicken I’ve had. The chips are good too. My partner said his steak was very good. The wine was of good quality and a big bonus- the pub is within walking distance. I do recommend you give The Royal Oak a try- the menu is varied and caters for all.

After my unfortunate visit in March 2019, my partner and I decided to give the Royal Oak a second chance. So glad that we did. Things have obviously settled down after the refurbishment. The place still looks great. Spotless and welcoming. We had two chicken roasts for Sunday lunch with a side portion of cauliflower cheese and extra roasters. The food was excellent. Hot and full of taste. There was no need to order extra roasters as there were plenty on the plate. Everything was fresh and the roasters were crunchy, just how they should be. The gravy didn't appear to be granules as it had too much taste. If it was then I would like to know what brand cuz even bisto doesn't taste that good !!!! Our food and drink order was taken by Sasha who is a gem. She was welcoming, professional and courteous - an asset to the Royal Oak. So glad to be able to give a better review. Why does TripAdvisor give this pub's address as "Main St., Exeter", when it's really at 'Main St. Exminster'? Anyway, four grandparents, two parents and a two yr old and a 3 yr old have just enjoyed a really great meal experience there! Great menu choices and all really did thoroughly enjoy their meal... it's great cooking here! The waitress was, frankly, superb and gave every sign of truly believing in doing it all dead right and being genuinely friendly and so very helpful, to every individual among us.

Since seeing reviews as good thought we would try it. Have to say poor I’ve been a chef for over 30 years and the food was poor and expensive for quality. I had the goats cheese tart with mash and salad. The mash was instant no taste or seasoning and the tart was roughly 3 inches in diameter with a few salad leaves. The other person had the pie of the day with chips which consisted of half a dozen decent ones and the rest bits and a carrot. Not at all good value for money also had to wait almost 40 minutes and were the only ones in. Could understand if it was busy. Will not be returning. It says on menu all home cooked well adding water to powder to make a mash is not home cooking. Very disappointed.

Have lived nearby for 6 months and have been using the pub a couple times a week. We like the pub, the new owners who took over are really pleasant and are trying very hard to build a good reputation which must be hard after the number of previous owners and previous reputation. Barman Mo is always friendly and chatty, I have noticed it improving over the time we’ve been here. The pizzas are top notch and the other food we’ve had has always been good. Beer is always well kept. A great local pub which has Pool, darts and skittles too which is a rarity nowadays. We had an excellent meal at the Royal oak. My wife had the brie wedges as a starter and agreed they were the best she has ever had. My son loved them too. I had the prawn and salmon starter and could not fault it, it was great to have a good portion and was really fresh. Then mains, i had an excellent steak, cooked just right, my son raved about the gammon and my wife enjoyed a chicken sizzling dish. The mains were huge and we were stuffed, although the boy somehow managed the chocolate cake dessert! To be honest we did have a little wait for the food, but when it is freshly cooked and as good as it was, we really didnt mind. I had another rink and a game of pool. Visited yesterday with the intention of having some food. Admittedly it was 3PM, but there were only half a dozen people in the pub and a skeleton staff. The bar lady ,despite the lack of customers did not seem to notice my entry and was more concerned about chatting to two other women who were talking about doing the banking the next day. When she did notice me she asked " are you waiting?". I sat down in a very grubby chair and had a look at the menu card, the bar lady having made no effort to ask me if I wanted to eat. I then surveyed my surroundings and decided that I really didn't want to eat there. There were some plates left on a nearby table by some people who had had the roast lunch, but no effort had been made to clear them away. The whole ambience was tired and dirty looking. I noticed the supports on the chairs were covered in dust. Sadly not somewhere I would go again.

Had a drink outside in their lovely large beer garden and was surprised at how much it's opened up inside - lovely bar area, pool table and nice big dining area - nice choices on menu too. Food was really really good and good value - proper home cooked - not a 'ping' meal!!- even got roped in for an impromptu traditional game of skittles with the landlords and locals!( you'd never know there's a proper skittle alley running through the pub ! It's really well disguised but full sized! Don't think they'll be asking me to join a team tho!!!)Couldn't be easier to get a bus from Exeter - stops right outside the pub with return stop opposite pub! My what a change, interesting menu, have eaten there now a couple of times, really struggled to eat it all.Excellent quality food, not overpriced, nice range of drinks. Cocktails not normally my tipple but for advertised price - well silly not to try.New owners doing their best to give the villagers back what has been missing for several years. With the experience they have it looks really promising. It's child, family & dog friendly, decent car park. This Monday night is skittles & nibbles, will be so nice to have the skittle alley open again after so many years dormant.

This pub/restaurant seems doomed. It re-opened in September 2015 but closed again at the beginning of August 2016. A notice in the window now says it is 'hiring', so I assume that someone else is going to attempt to make a go of it. Will they be successful when others have failed; we shall see in due course.

Visited 1st May 2016.We decided to give this place another try, as we have each time it has changed hands in the last 5 years.Beer selection was poor - only Doom Bar as far as real ale went. A little odd in a county with many excellent breweries - Otter is served in most other pubs in the area.We ordered some food - the sharing platter to start with. Deep fried all round, so shouldn't have been hard to get right, but the chicken was bloody near the bone. We asked for 4 sauces - Ketchup, BBQ, garlic mayo and sour cream. Only BBQ and sour cream ever turned up.Moving onto mains - typical of any Brakes Bros/3663 supplied establishment (various burgers, Hunters Chicken, Whitby Cod, Scottish scampi etc etc). I tried the scampi - quite watery and tasteless, even after deep frying. Not many chips with it either - disappointingly small plateful. As I finished up my Doom Bar, I noticed something in the vinegar (that I'd already poured all over my chips and eaten) - there was a layer of mould floating around in it. How do you get mould, in something that's used as a preservative??I mentioned these issues quite politely to the staff - the only comment I got was 'oh dear...'. I waited another few seconds to see if anything else was forthcoming, but it wasn't so I left, never to return.

Four of us visited The Royal Oak for Mothers Day Lunch and opted for the 3-courses which we found to be very good value for money. The starters, particularly the pate was excellent. The roast itself, especially the lamb was beautifully cooked and plenty of it!! Served with delicious roast potatoes and a good selection of vegetables. Desserts were also very nice. Thankyou for a very enjoyable lunch. We will certainly be recommending it and hopefully will be back again soon.

After looking at the menu on their website we decided to give it a try. We travelled to Exeter by cat for the day to do shopping. As the weather was dry we walked along the river and went in for lunch. It was extremely quiet and menu was limited with no specials board! I ended up with a jacket potato and homemade chilli whilst my husband had all day breakfast, food was good but very disappointed with choice. We only eat out once a month and I feel robbed!!

My wife and I had dined here previously as a couple and with friends, but on this occasion booked a table for 6, four adults & two children. The regular Chef was ill on the night but the landlord agreed to open the restaurant earlier than normal for us and cooked our varied orders himself. The food was great with larger than average portion sizes for the price. The landlord was very attentive throughout our meal, especially with the children. Service from the waiting staff and bar was friendly and efficient. Bar prices were good too. We will certainly be dinning there again.

We ate there on a Thursday night which was very quiet due to the time of year and it being late night shopping in town. However the service was good and the main meals we had were excellent all home made with a special of liver and onions which my father loves and rarely gets. The portion sizes were very generous as well for the price.I would recommend this restaurant and will be going back again at some point in the near future.

In the pub quiz, I won a prize of two free lunchtime dinners on any Sunday I choose. With this in mind I took a friend, who happens to be vegetarian. I chose the lamb as this was on offer and it was perfectly cooked as were the vegetables. My friend, in the absence of a special vegetarian dish, opted for a plate of vegetables, exactly as mine.Although plenty of food was given, too much in my opinion, I am sure most people would be satisfied. The pub has a new landlord and he is certainly trying hard to please everyone. The pub has had four different landlords in the two years I have lived in the village but this one I feel will do his utmost to make a real success of it.

Great food, wonderful landlady and landlord (chef). Exceptional service from all members of staff.Family run pub/restaurant which never fails to delight.Had a meal here (Sunday lunch) to celebrate a friends birthday and have to write a review to say how brilliant this place is. Words cannot do it justice. Our waitress, Bethany, was attentive and helpful.Becky and John (landlady and landlord) are welcoming and the pub has a homely feeling to it. Will be back again without a doubt. Keep up the good work.

What a fab new furnished and clean family pub. The family running it are friendly and welcoming to all. Rebecca, John and family including Dudley are brilliant.A good selection of Beers and drinks are all well cared for.The separate restaurant is also well fitted out and welcoming for families to dine away from the bar. I can personally recommend the Sunday lunch. I visited with 2 very good friends and my children for Sunday lunch and have since visited with just friends.Give it a go, its exactly what a village pub should be.Thanks Becky and John

During the last three years this pub/restaurant has changed hands about six times. It is currently closed. When I moved into the area it offered a decent sized restaurant which offered good food, including carveries at lunchtimes and Special, reasonably priced menus for Seniors. They therefore got good business from locals in the village. Unfortunately, new landlords have tried everything from 'if it's monday it must be steak' to 'Indian Food' at higher prices (£50 for 2) - not for day to day use. As a result the locals did not support it. Bring back the day to day menus - if it ever re-opens.

We had never visited this pub before and the new owners had only recently arrived. I decided this year not to cook Christmas Day and for the first time to go out. The Royal Oak offered a 3 course Christmas Day dinner for £22.95 including a glass of wine. It was absolutely lovely! Everything was fresh including the homemade stuffing! 4 different kinds of vegetables, homemade gravy and lovely potatoes.I was reassured there would be nothing frozen and she was right! My family thoroughly enjoyed the homemade crumble for afters. Nothing was too much trouble for Karen and Paul. In fact we enjoyed it so much we took my mother in law there for her 80th Birthday 3 days later.

Well done to Karen and Paul on opening up the kitchen. A great pub menu with reasonable prices. Fresh fish from Brixham is on the menu cooked in various ways with a fish Friday menu available . The fresh crab sandwiches are moist and tasty. Sunday lunch is good old fashioned plated , with plenty of fresh vegetables served separately and under £8.00 for a choice of three meats. The Royal Oak is a clean well run local pub where every one is welcome, even your four legged friend can enjoy a bowl of water on the house.

This may have once been a pleasant watering hole and place to stop for a bite to eat, but be warned if you judge this on reviews that are not recent you eat at attend at your own risk!!!Customer "Glass of red wine please, oh and a pint of Otter."Barlady "Errrr, I'll just have a look!"..."Sorry we don't have any red wine, and we're out of Otter!"I get that the place is not getting customers but there's a reason, beautiful Devon village, close to bird reserve and nobody has considered serving good food and good wine, and provide some quality child meal options, come on sell it to somebody with a passion for the locals!

The place wasn’t as clean as one would hope to find it, and the food on both visits was utterly awful: tasteless, overpriced, very clearly microwaved, haphazard, thoughtless etc etc. A bacon bap or sausage roll from Spar is significantly more tasty, filling and worthwhile.

Pass by the chain coffee shops and pop in here. Based in the market. Serves great local coffee and all the cakes and lunches are homemade. Family run business. Great friendly staff.

This is a regular for us, however I’m becoming increasingly fed up with the managers attitude. Once again we were over charged recently, asked the female manager to resolve….. no apology, just a feeling we were bothering her. This manager really does need to sort her customer service out please.

We love this place so much that we booked a table for 3 consecutive nights during our recent stay at Cofton holiday cottages. We enjoyed every night, the food is great, the beer selection is good and the wine list is also good. Probably my favourite pub
