We came to this pub for lunch - we were the only customers, but the staff were wonderfully friendly and quite chatty. We had a prime bench outside in their lovely little garden - the lunch itself was simple, rustic, and very tasty. I was so impressed. Totally recommend!

After a long and tiring drive down from Scotland, it was a welcome relief to have a meal in The Royal Oak in Tingewick. A lovely 'country pub' in a lovely setting with a handy car park opposite. A warm welcome from the staff and our table was waiting for us as we arrived. (We had booked in advance). Both members of staff treated us with politeness and courtesy and took our orders. These arrived shortly afterwards and were excellent and there was plenty of it. The food was of a high standard and delicious. (My wife says the peppercorn sauce was the best she had tasted). After the starters, main course and dessert, we were both totally full up. A nice little chat with the cook/chef afterwards was an indication of the care that this place offers. When we are down that way again, we will definitely be paying another visit.

We stopped in minutes to go when The Royal Oak stopped serving food. The staff were so nice making us something to eat when they could have refused to serve us. Thank you very much! It was also a very safe place to eat in times of covid.

We found this near to Silverstone and will definitely be going back. The service was excellent. Sandra the landlady cooked our meal for us. I have a gluten intolerance and she could not have been more helpful. There was so much GF to choose from (usually its ham egg and chips if you're lucky!) Their steaks are to die for. Sandra doesn't make much money on them but she is determined to give good quality! A little treasure (Sandra and the pub)

We broke down on the by pass and landed here waiting for recovery. It was Sunday and they had a carvery on. No other food, so my wife lost out, she doesn't eat Sunday roast. Staff and customers were friendly enough especially as I was a stranger, they don't come stranger than me. so it was a lovely pub and the carvery was reasonable and very good. the ONLY thing that let them down, was when a 'customer' (might have been staff) jumped down from his stool at the end of the bar and went to serve a carvery meal. Notice I missed the bit where he washed his hands before handling food, because he didn't wash his hands. ( i am a food safety trainer so spot little bits that others might miss) So nobody died because of it, or I might have dropped another star off the rating.

We called in on the off chance last Thursday hoping we could get a light lunch. After 10 minutes still no one had come through to the bar so we found a door at the back of the bar and called through. We were met by a very grumpy Italian man who said he was the chef, we asked if we could get something to eat and he said there was only Lasagne and chips, we asked if there was any soup and he said he would see and then offered us Broccoli and Stilton soup with a roll. Eventually this came but not with a roll but a lump of garlic bread, the soup was cold and he took it back and said he would warm it up. It came back hot this time but when we started to eat it there were so many hard bits in it that we had to take out, it was really awful, a very bad experience. We said that we could not eat it and were given the excuse that it was the chef of the previous day that had made it. We left the soup and the premises. Having been told that the pub had recently had a refurbishment and seeing the positive comments on the reviews the quality of food looks to be really good. I will not be going back there and would never recommend it.

After reading good reviews on Tripadvisor decided to give this place a try.Telephoned on Wednesday evening to book a table for Thursday and spoke to a nice lady who made our reservation.Arrived at 7.00 on Thursday to be greeted by a grumpy Italian in chef's uniform who argued that we did not have a booking as it was not in the book! He reluctantly said "we will probably be able to fit you in" and showed us into the dining room which was empty apart from one other couple. None of the tables were set so they could not have been booked. He then brought one menu over - not even one each - and walked away without taking a drinks order - I had to call him back to order some drinks. The menu was very basic with none of the "specials" on the website available so I ordered a Rump Steak and my wife Scampi - at this he said he would have to check if they had enough scampi! When the food arrived my steak looked a grey as a winter's morning with no sign of searing to give it some taste - on eating it was absolutely tasteless although tender and cooked to my liking (medium/rare) until I discovered a large piece of butcher's paper on the underside. In addition the menu said steaks came with salad but mine came with peas (I hate peas!). My wife's scampi was not much better being overcooked and burnt. When I complained about my steak he proceeded to blame the owner for buying cheaper meat and offered me a free drink. I said it was not the quality of the steak but the way it was cooked and I was refusing to pay it so he said "well I will have to charge for your drink then".We will not be returning

Driving from Devon to Norfolk, we headed for 'local services from the A421 wanting a drink and a break. The pub dog grinned and wagged his whole body as we went up the steps. Inside, the welome was just as warm from the staff. 2 oclock on Sunday afternoon, we expected to be too late for a meal, but minutes later we were in front of a carvery with a choice of three joints with yorkshire puds, stuffings, gravy, sauces and loads of vegetable varieties. Didn't just look good, it was really tasty too. So glad we turned off there. Really wish we lived closer, to go regularly. Perhaps they will come and run our 'local'?

Turned up on the off-chance and left very happy. What lovely people. Service was so good - what a shame that the bypass means that a lot of people are missing this little gem. Wednesday is carvery day, as is Sunday. The meal was so tasty. My friend had the beef and gave it a good report. I don't eat meat so just had the veg. Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, roast parsnip, carrots, roast potato and mash. And Yorkshire pudding. Joy - and an extremely reasonable price. I wish it was my local. One of the best meals out we've had in a year of trying out pubs in the Oxfordshire area. Recommended for sure. Please note that there is a rear entrance to avoid the steps at the front - very useful if you use crutches as I do.

We eat lunch midweek and I was pleasantly surprised. From the outside, this pub may look a bit tired, and the first impressions on entering are not much different. The menu is scribbed on a small blackboard, but on closer examination was actually rather intriguing. Lots of fresh, largely Italian-oriented dishes like home made lasagne, pasta plus pub regulars like gammon and scampi. The smells from the kitchen were wonderful and the chef confirmed he had just made a fresh lasagne, which I duly ordered. It was properly, properly delicious - huge in quantity and I could barely finish it, but I forced myself. My fellow eaters had gammon and eggs, which was plentiful and nicely presented, and scampi which was presented well and unlike many pubs nowadays, there was plenty of scampi to eat. Great value as well. So, if you want good pub food, no frill and good value - then you'll like this place.

We came across this little gem when out for a walk in Wendover. Although the outside seating allocation was full due to the lovely weather, we easily found a spot inside. We both ordered the large breakfast, which arrived promptly. For the price, you got a very good portion. The black pudding was very tasty, the hash browns were perfectly crispy, the bacon was meaty with a nice margin of fat for flavour; also, perfectly cooked eggs, well cooked sausages etc. The food was piping hot too. Our only criticism would be the use of semi-skimmed milk. Recent studies show that full-fat dairy products are protective against diabetes, obesity and heart disease. Large numbers of people and cafes are switching back to whole milk. I recommend you use whole milk too for health and flavour reasons, as it makes coffee etc. taste much creamier and you need less of it!

Set in beautiful grounds, Hartwell House is a unique hotel. Steeped in history we felt as if we had stepped into a Jane Austin novel. The house is beautifully restored and filled with antiquities. We loved being able to relax in its library after dinner. The spa is in a separate building and quite fabulous with a good sized pool with jacuzzi. The views from our 2nd floor bedroom were stunning and our room extremely spacious, even though it was not one of their premium rooms. We had afternoon tea and dinner and both were served with attention to detail and with elegant silver service. The food was beautifully presented and delicious. The service we experienced was friendly and professional. We felt very well looked after.
