Popped in for a drink .. lovely pub ... we didn't stop for food this time but will return for food as always good quality food

Great seasonal menu so worth popping in throughout the year! From the varied starters I chose the spicy prawns on bruchetta, which I'll definitely have again! For main I went the specials board route. Although there were many items on the main menu, from pub staples to fine dining (steaks, fish, pies etc) I chose the chicken & chorizo tagliatelle which featured black & green olives. I hope this is on the menu next time I visit, as it too was superb! Deserts followed ( ice creams, sorbets or cheeseboard ) & it was off past the Halloween decorations & into the autumn night air with plans to visit again- the ploughman's looks too good not to try at some point! Spring update: returned again today..from the ever-changing menu I went for a main course of sirloin steak salad with sprinkled Stilton. Really enjoyed it (& the homemade chocolate brownie that followed). We like to visit every now & again to try different dishes..& have recently tried the house-special burger & the ploughman's! This pub never disappoints!

Was part of a large booking celebrating my friends birthday. The food was lovely, generous portions and service was very good. Nice and cosy surroundings, very enjoyable evening.

I took my mum here for Mother's Day for a meal and had a great time. It's a decent pub in the village and was understanadably pretty busy. It could do with some modernisation inside, but it was clean and warm. The food was pretty good, very traditional Sunday roast the kind your mum will love, but I've had many better ones with much more flavour. The two course menu on the day was good value, and the service was super friendly (I think their names were Toby & Chelsea).

Ok this was the first visit and unfortunately wasn't impressed as we were kept waiting for a good half an hour to be seated after our booking. It was packed as it was mother's day, probably booked in too many to handle as we were in their for 3 hours, felt like a life time waiting for starters, dinner and dessert to come out. The staff are very pleasant but the food was very average. Could have been tasier and beef and lamb were abit hard to chew. The parsnips and potatoes very blanked but not terrible. The best course was dessert 🍨 but I'm afraid not enough for us to want to come back. As shame as it looks nice from the outside Ps the lock on the ladies toilet is broken, needs replacing.

Had an absolutely wonderful lunch here today. When we arrived we were greeted warmly and warned that as we hadn’t booked and they had two large parties arriving, we may have to wait 1/2 an hour. We were seated and served drinks. Only waited a little over 10 minutes and were served by a wonderful young man named Toby. Our delicious starters arrived swiftly, but we had a slight delay in the main course arriving, but as I mentioned, we had been warned. Nevertheless, Toby apologised for the delay and explained that they were extremely busy. When the mains arrived they were well presented, excellent size portions and very tasty. In fact we enjoyed the food and the ambience so much we even had a desert, which is something I generally skip! Dessert was equally as good as the rest of the meal. Will definitely return to this local gem 👍🏻

Booked Saturday travelled from the North East to have lunch with our Daughter, SIL and our 2 granddaughters, meal was very good indeed the service was exceptional, really friendly greeting from the two ladies and nothing was too much trouble for them. I used to live in the Southend area some 20 odd years ago and used to visit the pub infrequently. Glad we had lunch there today and when back in the area in the future will gladly return. The atmosphere was convivial and the menu varied and very reasonably priced. The service was exceptional and all four for the lunch were impressed with every aspect of the visit

We had a festive dinner there last night and I was really impressed with the quality and quantity of the food. It was fantastic and I thoroughly recommend it, especially the spicy soup. Great thick slices of turkey and loads of veggies. The Christmas pudding with brandy sauce was also fabulous.

Great food but limited choice as there were several dishes on the menu that were not available. Thankfully, what our party wanted was all available and delicious. There was no wine list and the choice was very limited. The staff were very polite but our server was a little forgetful when it came to replacing cutlery and providing condiments. That said, it's only a tiny gripe and didn't impact too negatively on the whole experience. Even taking the above into account, I wouldn't hesitate to return. The pub itself has a real traditional feel about it. Lovely setting.

The worst meal we have ever eaten , my scampi meal looked like a kids meal , the cauliflower cheese was burnt and dry , there was only 2 potatoes on our friends roast , the stuffing looked like dog food, there was only one parsnip on one dinner , we asked for more potatoes and was charged for a portion of chips , the potatoes were so hard we couldn't cut through them and my husband saw the chef's just putting items in the microwave, the only thing that was nice was the cheesecake and our pie was awful because of the powered custard , not once was we asked if we was enjoying out meal and it came to over 180 quid for 4 with a few drinks, I tried to find someone to complain to on our way out but there was no one about , we couldn't wait to get out of there

1st time for us. We had a great welcome. We didn't know how it all worked. They were busy, and the bar lady said we would be with you shortly. The waitress/bar lady was very efficient and very friendly. We had a superb meal. We will return.

Only two people in there when I went

Good home "style" cooked meals. Huge Sunday roast complemented with separate dishes of veggies including an excellent Cauliflower cheese. Excellent attentive staff (on the day our party of 4 went there was a big birthday celebration with 20 + people), but we were well looked after. If you like your Real Ale, the choice was limited but that's my only minor negative. Priced in accordance with the quality and quantity of food!

Food was OK. Not a lot of choice if you're a vegetarian.

Five of us went for lunch on a Monday. Very friendly staff, didn't rush us to order. Large portion sizes. Would be good if they had a small bites type menu for those with smaller appetites and/or less money to spend. I definitely recommend it.

Our first time at The Royal Oak, but not the last. The staff were very friendly, the food delicious and the portions generous. I had my eye on a particular dessert but was too full after the main course. I need to go back and give it another go.

Carrots were hard. Lamb was really fatty. Vinegar looked months old. Chips didn't feel triple cooked, maybe frozen. Burger wasn't cooked in the middle. Will not be visiting again.

Went there for a drink and had a good time, the staff were welcoming and friendly. Nice inside and outside with all the flower baskets. As for the ladies toilets 10/10 immaculate! The beer garden was good too, definitely a place to go.

Lovely food, great staff, just a very quite pub

We stopped here on a hot day when walking and enjoyed a drink in the garden before resuming our walk .

We went for lunch today and had chicken liver starter for me and duck liver parfait for my partner , both were very tasty. My partner had the fillet steak for mains and asked for it very rare.. we have found that you ask for rare at many establishments you get medium at best.... but this came out properly rare (thank you). I had steak and kidney pudding, which was great and full of tender steak pieces. Service was great too so a great lunch experience.overall.

Lovely pub garden, unfortunately the food needs looking at, the 3 of us ordered sandwiches, the bread tasted old (not fresh) although the meal size was quite generous, the chips tasted of scampi.

We eat here regularly and the food and service is always excellent. We popped in for lunch today and Chelsea and Chloe really made us feel welcome.

We were able to book a big table easily on a busy bank holiday weekend We received a warm welcome and the menu was full lovely food options. Couldn't really fault it, good food, good service in very comfortable surroundings. We will certainly be heading back in the near future.

Great menu and excellent service. Lots of space inside and out. I enjoyed my sausages and my little friend thought they smelled wonderful :-)

Great food and good choice of beers

My wife, daughter and I paid a visit to this pub at lunchtime on Monday to celebrate my birthday. Both the food served and the service provided by all of the staff was of an excellent quality. I can thoroughly recommend this pub to others.

The food at the Royal Oak is amazing definitely recommend the steak and kidney pudding it was delicious, we were served by Tasha and Abby they were very friendly and gave an excellent service from the moment we walked into the pub to the time we left we wasn't rushed and we didn't have to wait very long for our food or our drinks. Keep up the good work definitely will be coming back

Roast was very disappointing. Yorkshire burnt. Turned to dust when you tried to cut it. Roast potatoes were too tuff. To cut meat tuff Food cool. Venue cold service poor. Lesson learnt

Visited the royal oak today with gf and friends for Sunday lunch. Food was excellent (roasts all round), had a couple of local breweries on tap and Francis, Amanda and Toby were great friendly hosts.

Best pub for a long time. The food was amazing! Fantastic service. Toby the waiter was friendly and experienced. Don't usually do reviews but this place was so good. Thank you to all the staff it was perfect.

Horrible sticky tables although food was good and well priced.

We were welcomed very warmly by the staff and food was extremely good,,,BUT the pub smells of wet dog and dampness so put us off going again,, shame as beer was a local good quality pint ,

Family meal, my steak and kidney pudding was huge and great value, as was the fish pie, fish n chips, and sea bass that other family members had, desserts were very good too, have eaten here before and standard is very good.

Wonderful place in a little bit of countryside, staff are lovely and the food is exceptional. Fabulous meal again today, sausage and mash with vegetables in rich gravy...followed by blackcurrant, Elderfower crumble served beautifully with a red sauce and custard! and Sticky Toffee pudding to takeaway, marvellous!

This is a lovely village pub with excellent service. Food was great and people very friendly. We visited on a Friday lunch time and were seated and served at the table with no waiting.

Fantastic Sunday Roast with good selection of vegetables in lovely surroundings in the restaurant. Also pleased to hear that the pub area is dog friendly so will definitely be back. Thoroughly recommend.

On my own today so popped in for lunch. I chose the Lasagna from the lunch menu and it was superb. So tasty with a nice salad and garlic bread. It was excellent. Highly recommended.

Expensive food but really tasty

Went for lunch, I had a buttermilk chicken burger which was very good and could have fed two people, my partner had the posh ploughman's lunch which came with good quality cheese, ham, pickles and bread all served by Natasha who was very friendly and efficient

I chose The Royal Oak due to my late fathers shooting club many years ago. What a good decision. We held a celebration of his life there. The owners and staff were wonderful. We had the resturant and private courtyard all to ourselves. The food and all round service were excellent. It was the perfect place. Thank you for making our sad celebration so memorable !!!

I was lucky enough to be taken here for lunch recently and have to say the food and service was superb. Real traditional freshly cooked food, beautifully presented by attentive staff. Would definitely recommend to everyone.

We enjoyed a very good meal as a family. The children's meal was very generous - actually I think all of the portion sizes were! The staff were lovely too, thank you for a nice evening out.

Haven't been here for far too long. Years in fact but the food is exactly as I remember, superb. The steamed sea bass is a fantastic meal. For pub food this is just awesome.

Very good pub and restaurant. Was a bit traditional (old fashioned) last time I eat there. But still very good food and service all round.

Came here yesterday evening . There were 17 of us for our golden wedding. Staff are amazing, friendly and couldn't do enough for us. Food is exceptional. The only downside was I had the lamb rump £16.95 and it was mostly fat hardly any meat on it. Was soooo disappointed. Did show the waitress .
