The Royal Oak hasn't really changed much over 20 years! I've been in here not often during this time. I's a typical British pub, with darts, pool and a jukebox, ticking a lot of things you might want in a pub. Not sure if they do food but they have bar snacks and with with the Carlsberg I had, was very reasonably priced, especially these days!! I think I paid £5.60 for a pint and a bag of pork scratchings. It is a little tired and could do with a freshen up, the car park hasn't changed, at the top of a steep drive and pot holes abound, also unlit. Friendly staff and locals, apparently gets very busy with teens and 20's on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights or when the footy is on! I gave 3 stars not because it's a bad pub, but it's also not a great pub...Average 🙂

Lovely old pub with large outside gardens set on a quiet back road in Tilehurst. Have been coming here on and off for over 35 years. Was quiet on a Monday afternoon had a good chat with the landlady.

Nice and cozy local, compared to other pubs around it is ever so slightly more expensive.

Old-fashioned pub with an unusual layout and a huge garden. A very nice pint, well kept. Dog friendly. A few very, very sweary loud old men (friendly, just sweary) but that's par for the course round these parts. Bar staff very friendly, good service. One of the better pubs in Tilehurst, although the benchmark is admittedly very low.

The bar girl was rude. Apparently because it was her last day as she”hated the manager”. My dog Charlie normally is fine with all people and children but the bar gir took exception and called for the manager!! He asked to talk me outside and proceeded to lecture me about manners, dog care and other issues. I told him that the issue was simple, don’t leave a disgruntled employee in charge of the pub, certainly without a licence or training!! He proceeded to ask me to leave which I of course did and will not return, other than an apology. In my view the bar/S should not be left with one clearly untrained person in charge. Whoever owns this joint get a grip!!!!!!!

Lovely pub and friendly service however I think they need to up their game with regard to Covid 19. We sat at an inside table with empty used glasses from previous customers and these were not removed even when our drinks order was brought to the table. So as well as leaving dirty glasses on the table the table and chairs were not disinfected between customers. Not good. I then saw some other people sit at an inside table where exactly the same thing happened. Surely as soon as a table is vacated it should be cleared down and disinfected before other people can use it. I’m not sure the outside tables were being cleared and disinfected either. Just a little more care And effort can make all the difference.

This place is under new management. They have a good selection of real ales, they had black sheep on my last visit. It gets quite busy even on a Monday night. The very steep driveway up could do with some lighting and the beer could be 1c slightly warmer......it's a little too cold for a real ale. Overall would definitely recommend.

Not a great experience at all.extremely disappointed that all the family had walked there to find that children aren't allowed in the garden after 8.There are no signs and no details on your website regarding this.how bad that you can allow dogs but not teenagers. We will not be back at all.I will give this 0 stars.

Rubbish wasn't allowed in because it was 8 clock with all my family traveled 190 miles to see my family and then walk 30 mins to the pub and get told I'm not allowed in now got to walk another 30 mins. Bear in mind there 7 of us I guess they thought I would be causing chaos. Disgusting.

My family travelled 190 miles for the weekend. I have visited this pub before with my fiancé but never with anyone else. 7 of us in our party. No mention on the website of no children or teenagers after 8 but dogs are fine to foul the grass beer garden outside anytime. I suggest a website change is needed. I won't be visiting the pub again.

First time ive ever been turfed out because i had a teenager with me, very rude, Travelled 190 miles to visit family and wasnt allowed to sit in the beer garden because there was a child in our party of 7. Nobody was even allowed to buy a drink if he was on the premesis. My family are locals who usually drink in that pub, Never again they said. RUDE.

I'd give you 0 stars if it is was possible. After not letting my smartly dressed, very quiet and sensible teenage brother not stay at the pub because "children aren't allowed in the pub OR the beer garden" after 8pm, I will not be returning. They allow dogs in there but not quiet teenage boys who were clearly being supervised anyway. The pub lost out on our business and as a result we definitely will not be stepping foot in there again.

Way better than the itsu in reading town centre, they actually serve you hot food in a proper bowl with a silver serving spoon, perfect for enjoying their noodle dishes - the food was served quickly and well presented and I was greeted and thanked on entry and exit by a nice member of staff 5/5
